"Don't forget that the resale value will be higher with an automatic vs. a manual for the same type of car."

Like most rules of thumb, this one is thumb-times wrong. If the configuration truly is desirable and fairly rare, it may well continued to be so prized in the pre-owned market that it will maintain its relatively higher value. It all depends on if the buyers who appreciate the distinction are there to see it....

If you are going to trade it in when you are done, it will flat out kill the value.. After all, its a Honda Accord, not an S2000. If you have the time to find the right private buyer that won't settle for an automatic (someone like you), then you will get a fair price. Dealers hate stick-shifts.. I know, there are exceptions.. this isn't one of them.

you'll get killed if you try to trade in a manual accord with a dealer-- you'll have to do a private sale to get what the car is actually worth...

if you're the kind who keeps a car a few years and then trades, i'd stay away from manuals...

if you run your cars into the ground, no big deal.

You go in knowing it will cost you more in the long run... If I really wanted a manual, I wouldn't get an auto just for the lower depreciation.. No fun driving what you don't like..

You need to look outside SA. My dad had the same problem, came to Houston, got one for $500 above invoice. Oh, and the car isn't rare because it is so popular, it is rare because very few are made. There is a difference.

Check out Gillman, McDavid (my choice), John Eagle, etc. Their stock is usually listed on their website so you know what they have before you email them.

I loved driving the 6-speed, but in the end decided that I would have to get an Accord or TSX auto. I only keep cars for 2 years or so, and resale is a big concern. Heck, I had a hard time selling my 97 Civic EX 5-speed in 99. Everyone wanted an automatic--in a Civic!
  • midnightcowboymidnightcowboy Member Posts: 1,978
However I would look at the two larger dealer Goodson ( West and North) and Gillman. You can get you best deal from them.

Goodson will give you a great price up front. Gillman you have to be a little more knowledgeable. In being informed you can get almost the same price as Goodson; if you work real hard maybe better.

John Eagle has higher prices but has a lot of dealer features: Loaner cars, car washes, etc. But living in SA you probably couldn't take advantage of them.

McDavid is good, but not the best price.

Sterling McCall is a small dealer that sells the 6-spped at MSRP an doesn't allow test drives.

Houdini ... John eagle is where we got the EX-V6 without NAVI for $24,333 including desitnation. They had several V6's on the lot ... just check their website to for stock.

I did everything over the Internet and had a great experience. Although you are in SA, the dealership has treated us great and the extra's are nice.

We worked with Gillman acura as well. They were tremendous, we just liked the Accord better.

    Hi,
Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I got the loaded Accord--EX/V6/Leather/Navigation. My deal was a bit complicated since I traded in my leased '02 Jeep Liberty, which had enormous negative equity. Still, I had figured out that I had about $7K in negative equity, and I drove out the door at $563 for a 36 mo/15K lease, paying the first payment only. They did not haggle or try to change the terms--I did it all via email. I'd proposed a price of $26,300, but I think I actually got it for cheaper.

Hope that helps! It's a fabulous car. I had wanted an Infiniti, but the Accord more than satisfies my requirements. It's smooth, accelerates great, and the XM and Nav are too cool. The car has surpassed my expectations and even my 18 year-old daughter likes it. Good luck!

The lowest price quote I got is 20200 plus fees, tax etc. Is there any room for negotiation? thanks a lot.

The Honda dealer in Naples told me that the EX V-6 6 speed no navi was rare also. Funny thing is they had two on the lot. The dealer here added $3995, and I was told they would not come off that price. I sent out some e-mails and got a call from a dealer up the road who told me $25,000 for the car out the door for $27,240. According to Edmunds TMV people are paying close to MSRP in my area, getting the car for 25k sounds good. I am still going to look for a better price through an e-mail attack to other dealers. If you look around you can get a better deal. I received a quote from a dealer in PA for $24,484, however it is a little far to go to get the car. Keep looking and you will find the car you want at a price that feels good to you. I plan on getting mine next Saturday; I will give the details when I get it.

Living near the Chicagoland area, I've hit several dealers looking for a 6 speed coupe and dealers were lucky to ever have one on the lot. When they all told me that they probably wouldn't haggle much from MSRP, I believed them. How could you expect them to haggle if the cars move so quick when they get them? I couldn't swallow buying a car at MSRP though, so I almost resigned myself to buying a Mazda6 w/ the 5 speed & V6. But, I found a dealer in Elmwood Park that had a dealer driven silver 04 with 1600 miles on it. After a little haggling I walked out with it for $250 over invoice and new car financing since it was never titled. It would have been nice to break in the engine myself, but it was worth the risk in my mind for the discount. 2 weeks later and I have 2600 miles on it with no problems.

Just drove home a few hours ago in an LX sedan, 4 cyl automatic. Paid about $250 less than Edmunds TMV for this particular model. Our first Honda (traded in a Chevy Venture minivan) and we are thoroughly pleased with the build quality and ride of this car! Wife especially is happy, the car is mostly for her use.
Terrific buying experience at Buerkle Honda (White Bear Lake). Got a quote from them via Honda web site, made an appointment, and our test drive, negotiation, paperwork was all handled professionally and quickly (we had our 2 little kids with us, and it was important to us not to have to be there any longer than we needed to!)
And, the temperature here in Minnesota went above zero today, first time since Tuesday! Yay! (Yes-- winters here can be absolutely miserable!)

After an e-mail attack with Edmunds help, I have received several offers one was for $26,834 out the door. I also got a call from a dealer in Miami stating the car for invoice, plus tax tag and title, and yet another dealer in Orlando that said they would beat any written price. The dealer in Naples is still at MSRP, (their loss) with the same two cars that have been on the lot for going on three weeks. If they only get one per month as I was told then one of the two has been on the lot since December. I will give them a chance to meet the lowest price, if not it will be a nice drive in my new car. Yes the car might be rare, however not everyone wants a manual transmission. Naples is a big retirement community so it does not surprise me that they are not moving the 6 speeds. Keep looking the deal is out there

First, thanks for all the helpful replies to my original post. Here's what's happening right now:

On Monday, I'm going to go drive an Accord coupe with the V6 and 6 speed manual transmission. The dealer appears to be willing to negotiate on the price. The only negative is the color, which is black. Make that a double negative - the interior is black too. A very hot combination considering the infernal climate here in south Texas.

Besides the heat factor, can anybody tell me about the black paint used on these cars? I know from past experience that some manufacturers' black paint can scratch easily, revealing swirl marks and the like if not careful when washing the car. I'm just wondering if Honda's black paint should be avoided, if possible.

Too bad the car isn't silver or white. That's what my ideal choices were. Oh well, beggers can't be choosers, right?

Again, thanks in advance for any info.

The new V6 is supposed to convert to 4 cylinders when on the freeway or easy driving for great fuel economy and more power when you step on the gas and need all 6 cylinders. Is it worth the wait?

Purchased my 6 speed on Jan 3 for $50 over invoice in the Philadelphia suburbs area. Just
checked the 2 two dealers inventory and the other
6 speeds I looked at are still there. There may
not be on the lots but their not moving quick in
this area. My car is the black on black. If you
want the beige interior you have to get white or
red. The heat hasn't been an issue since it doesn't get above 30 degrees in the Valley Forge
PA area anymore. No issues or problems with the
black paint after a month of snow and ice.

Purchased an LX Sedan (w/o side airbags) today @ Honda North, Danvers , MA for $18,100. Got $1,200 in trade for 16 year old Volvo. Under book, but not worth selling outright. Pleasant experience.

Earlier in the day, had a verbal agreement w/salesman & manager @ Honda Cars of Boston. Deal was $17,500, then $800 for same Volvo. Verbally agreed upon twice!!!, then sales manager reneged. NOT a pleasant experience.
  • lawdawgfllawdawgfl Member Posts: 75
If you want a specific color then get that color. You are paying a lot of money for this car, get it the way you want it. I would hate to get the car only to love everything about it except the color. I personally do not like black cars, living in south Florida it gets hot here and the black color seems to make it worse inside on really hot days. A black car looks great after they are washed and waxed but seem to show dirt quickly. Since I want tan interior I have two choices red or white, either one would be fine with me, I like both of the colors. Good luck in finding the car you want. Hopefully I will be getting mine this week.

We are looking to purchase a 5spd 4cyl Accord and were quoted $17,800. (Denver market area). For fun factor and quality of the refined Honda 5 spd. would like the manual but keep reading the auto trans resale is so superior. Just checked Kelly blue book dealer trade value and for a used 02 with 25K miles the auto trans vs the 5 spd is only $850 additional value, which is acceptable, so what is the deal, am I looking at something wrong? It appears the resale is not that much different. Also, upfront, new Accords with Man trans. are a little more negotiable off msrp than auto, is that correct? The auto trans Accord 4cyl is a fine automobile, just a little boring to me, comments please...close to getting a 5 spd and only keep cars 3 or 4 years max.
  • ral2167ral2167 Member Posts: 791
it's my experience that dealers will offer you MUCH less for a 5 speed than an auto-- especially on an accord.... don't go by what the blue book says. just my opinion based on first hand experience. anyone else try to trade in a 5 speed manual on a car considered a family sedan?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
As used cars, five speed Accords will rot on the lot. The "books" may only take a 500.00 deduction for the five speed but the dealers know they will attract VERY few buyers.

Cars that attract few buyers as new cars are even harder to sell as used.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...aren't so hard to sell in the paper. I'd say, buy what you like, and if that's a 5-speed, just know you'll probably have to sell it on your own. If you're someone who trades cars every two or three years, though, I'd probably stick with an automatic.
  • h0udinih0udini Member Posts: 118
Very nice car, but I didn't buy because the black exterior and interior turned me off, like I thought it would. When looking at the dealer's cars, all the black cars appeared the dirtiest because the dust and dirt just stand out against the black paint more.

I'm almost 6'3" and I felt the car didn't have as much headroom as I would have liked. My hair was brushing against the headliner. Are others my height having this problem? Too bad the sunroof on this model wasn't an option, because it lowers headroom an inch or so.

What a shame, the price on the car was outstanding - $22,250 before TTL. It only had 9 miles on it when I drove it. If anybody reading this is interested, the car is at Gunn Honda in San Antonio.
  • jmaxejmaxe Member Posts: 198
I just bought an '04 Accord EXL V6 in San Antonio and it was the easiest car I've ever bought. I e-mailed the dealer on Friday who responded immediately with a quote $2000 below invoice.
Stopped in on Saturday, drove the car, got a 3.9%/60 mos loan and drove it home. They should all be that easy!
  • ramped1ramped1 Member Posts: 159
Clarify please: $2K below invoice, or $2K below MSRP?
  • cwrigh01cwrigh01 Member Posts: 23
I assume it was a 2003 model? That's waaayyy too low for a 2004 EX V6 6MT, black or not!
  • jmaxejmaxe Member Posts: 198
Don't you think if I've been doing this for 30 years I'd know the difference?
Gunn Honda in SA sold me a brand new '04 EXL V6 Auto(with 2.7 miles on it) for $22,250 + TTL. Same price that Houdini mentioned for the 6MT.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Well, I suppose they could give them away too...

    ghulet,

I agree that people should buy what they like. Selling a five speed Accord in the paper will attract the same buyers that walk in a dealership.

Probably 19 out of 20 buyers will pass on the five speeds. It could take a long time to sell, or it could get quickly snapped up by one of the few who are looking for a stick.
  • h0udinih0udini Member Posts: 118
No, it is a 2004 model. That is why this decision was such a dilemna, because the price was so good. The $22,250 price is clearly marked on the car - nobody will have to negotiate to get this price. When something like this happens, you have to wonder if the car had been damaged at the dealer's lot and they had to make repairs. Assuming they're honest, this information should be disclosed.

Even though the price was a steal, the color and the headroom issue were concerns for me so I felt it best to pass on the deal.
  • cwrigh01cwrigh01 Member Posts: 23
Wow, that is truly incredible. I have to admit I am perplexed as to why they would do that. I like black cars, and would take this car in a heartbeat. Something just has to be wrong...even if it didn't include destination, that has to be about what the dealer cost is (when you consider their holdback).

    Makes no sense.

Columbus, Ohio area - Have a deal on an '04 Accord EX - L for $22,200, and getting $8,000 for my '01 Civic (70,000 miles). Edmunds shows trade-in at $7,200...I've purchased a few vehicles from this dealer and feel that this is a decent deal. Can I do better? Thanks!
  • ramped1ramped1 Member Posts: 159
No offense intended. However, you have posted EX-L V6 twice, and the EX-L is a 4 cylinder model. No dealer in my neck of the woods would come within 1K of your price on a V-6, that's why I asked. Congrats on your purchase, and good luck.
  • jmaxejmaxe Member Posts: 198
No problem. Don't know what the "L" I was thinking. It's the EX V6 for sure(no NAV)and no dealer options. Of course I was skeptical but at that price I had my pick from several in dealer stock. The only upsells they tried were the TOC protection package and extended warranty(I declined).
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...and all EX V6s have leather. LX V6 has cloth and no sunroof, among other differences.
  • lawdawgfllawdawgfl Member Posts: 75
Hello all, I am the proud owner of a 2004 red Accord coupe V-6 with 6 speed. I finally got it from the dealer that would not come off MSRP; the deal was for $27,000 out the door. The TMV for my area was $26,844 not including tax, tag, and title, so I was very pleased. I just got to work for the night and I will post the details with prices in a bit. Thanks to all for the help with answering questions.
  • htthtt Member Posts: 75
I'm offered $25,470 (including destination and 5yrs/60000mi warranty) for a '04 Accord EX V6 w/ Nav from Fernandez Honda in San Antonio, TX. It should be $27,300 OTD. I think this is a very good deal. What do you think ? Does any have any experience with Fernandez Honda ? I haven't been at the dealer yet. We work on this deal using email. Is there anything I need to watch out for ? Thanks.

We moved from a '99 Accord LX 4sp to an '04 EX-L auto. Our first auto in years. Really liked this model's version.

You shouldn't really have to negotiate. Read the site and download the spreadsheets at www.carbuyingtips.com. Once we were ready to buy it took about an hour to make offers. Bought it from my bedroom. :-)
  • lawdawgfllawdawgfl Member Posts: 75
I stopped by Germain Honda in Naples today simply to give them an out the door price for the Accord coupe V-6 6 speed. I fully expected them to pass on it considering I was told by the sales manager that they could not do any better than MSRP ($26,990), due to it being so rare. They even added $3995 to the price because of MVA (?) The salesman I had talked to before met me at the door. He suggested we go out and see if the car I wanted was still available, not only was the white one there, but the red one was back. I was told it had been sold, apparently the deal fell through. It still had the floor mats in the trunk and the plastic on the floor so I do not think it was off the lot. The red one had 53 miles on it while the white had 23. I decided I like the red better, the white was nice, but damn the red looked good.

We went back into the office were he put the numbers together. He showed me a figure of $34,840.(Here we go I thought, I’ll be leaving soon.) I told him I would give him $26,500 out the door. He took it to his sales manager. He came back and tried to pull some funny math and said I was only paying $23,XXX for the car. I explained to him that the figure of $26,500 was as follows. Invoice, plus $500, plus destination, plus tax, it would give them about $200 to play with for registration. I told him I knew what the invoice was (thank you Edmunds TMV) and that’s what I was willing to pay plus a little more. I explained that only a fool pays MSRP and only an idiot pays $4000 over MSRP.

He came back and tried to explain about a $499 administration fee, he explained that this went directly to the owner of the lot (Mr. Germain). I asked him if I added $500 if we had a deal making it $27,000 out the door. He said “yes”, we shook hands and started the paper work. The sales manager asked me not to tell anyone the price I paid, she said I had obviously had done my homework and was well prepared. She mentioned that she was glad that not all of the costumers did their homework like I did.

I might have been able to get a better deal, however I am happy and the dealership is happy, and I did not have to travel all over Florida, although I would have to get a good deal. According to Edmunds the TMV for what people are paying is $26,848 plus tax, tag and title.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Selling price $24,768.06
    Doc Fee $499
    Sales tax $1,516.44
    Waste tire fee $6.50
    Tag fee $189.50
    Agency fee $20.00
    ------------------------------
    Total $27,000
  • cwrigh01cwrigh01 Member Posts: 23
Very good--like you said you are happy with the deal and didn't have to spend a lot of your time (which has a price) looking for what you wanted. I always think it is interesting when the dealer assumes that you have no clue what the invoice price is. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out these days.

Again, good deal and have fun (and watch out for cops, red is a ticket magnet!).

I just picked up this car last Wed. night from Holler Honda in Winter Park Florida, it's tafetta white/ivory; here's my deal:

    Purchase price $23665.00
    Deal Admin fee $498.00
    FL waste fee $6.50
    Tag $100.00

    TOTAL PRICE $24269.50

I leased this through American Honda Finance at $337 per mo. with NOTHING down!!!!! Car had 20 miles at delivery and the dealer gave me FREE Honda splash gaurds. Supposedly, there were only (4) V6 6 speeds in the state on the day that I purchased.
  • tall1tall1 Member Posts: 6
BTW, the lease is for 36 months with 15000 miles per year.
  • lawdawgfllawdawgfl Member Posts: 75
I wouldn’t doubt it, the dealer I was at had two. All the other dealers said they would have to locate one. You got a great price, enjoy the car. Be careful though, it is really easy to exceed the speed limit.
The break in period isn’t too bad, no hard starts for 600 miles and no heavy breaking for 200 miles.
I really like the XM radio; I will purchase it after the free trial period is over. Enjoy the car!!

Thanks Elisa2U. Can you advise what dealership in Riverside you received this deal? Any other deals and dealerships in Riverside, CA or nearby locations?

Hi Bigred20...it was harpoo that got the great deal in Riverside, but I don't know which dealer they went to. I tried emailing Metro (think that was the name) in Riverside to get a quote but they didn't reply (and a subsequent phone call netted me a really snippy girl who was very unprofessional... so I checked them off my list)I haven't contacted the other Riverside dealership yet. I have been too busy to get serious about buying but plan to do it in the next couple of weeks. Let me know if you run across any great deals on EX v-6!! thanks!

After reading and reading everything I could, and I thank all who have placed prices, I finally got my V6 EX Accord today.
I live in the Scranton area of PA, and had to trade my 99 EX accord w/90000 miles.
I did get a quote of 24144, but the place was over 100 miles away, and wouldn't give me a ballpark figure on a trade.
Went to Burne honda (in Scranton), told them the offer I had, they told me they would sell it to me at invoice.
    24,344 (includes destination).
Offered me 6000 for my trade in, negotiated to 6500. I paid full retail for splash guards and moonroof visor.
I am taking advantage of the low financing Honda is offering.
PA has a 6% sales tax, tire tax 5.00, title fees 33.50 docu. fees 55.00,registration fee 26.00 splash guards and moonroof deflector 214.00.
total OTD price 25724.00 less 6500 trade 19250.17.
I think I did ok. I felt very confident with what I've read here, mostly the town discussion.
If you're in this area I recommend you stay away from Motoworld, they'll gorge you on trade-in and tell you their only making 95 bucks (over invoice).
I'll appreciate any comments on how I did, considering I feel like a student and all you subscribers my mentors!
Best advice I've read, negotiate car price and negotiate trade in as two seperate deals.
Also, how much are people paying for fog lights?
Is XM really worth 10 bucks a month?
Thanks again, you're impact reaches many!!!!!!

    Congrats im1!

There's been some conversation about the XM radio in our general Honda Accord discussion - you might want to follow that link and use the Search This Discussion feature on the page bar to see what others have said.

    Have fun!

On your question about XM, it all depends on what type of music you listen to and the quality of stations in your area. Is it worth it? 100% yes if you listen to anything considered outside the top 40 or country mainstream by the Infinity or Clear Channel programmers. If you aren't all that particular about what you listen to, probably not worth it. Give it a chance and you will surely become as addicted to it as the rest of the million-plus subscribers.

After lurking on this and other boards, bought a new 04 Ex V6 with Nav in San Jose bay area.
Got a price of $26011 (including dest) + tax, lic, doc. No dealer add-ons, no warranties. Also got the Honda auto loan for 2.9%APR.

I am very happy with the car, the experience and the deal I got. Thanks to all the helpful posts on this board.

Is it true that you get a 3 month free trial of XM radio when you buy an Accord? Does anyone know if the 3 months start when you buy the car, or can you activate it anytime?
