Aristotle - thanks for the reply. I like the Sonata, know its quality has improved greatly over the years, but still a bit nervous (CEO/founder? was, maybe still is is big trouble in Korea). Continue to gravitate toward the accord, albeit at a much higher price. Hyundai's features and quality may indeed put it ahead of the rest, but the company's past reputation cannot easily be dismissed.

And your Planet Hyundai experience is part of the reason why. Hyundai salespersons, "today only" specials and goofy rebates complicate informed buying decisions. Cannot help wondering about post-purchase service issues. I prefer a 4cyl, but the reported dealer response to the 17" wheel shimmy issue forces me to rethink as well. Thanks again.

The "today only" specials have been around for decades. Dealers have used this ploy since before Honda or Toyota were sold here and that's a long time.

I don't know of any stand alone Hyundai dealers, they also sell other brands. Do you think they only try this ploy on moderately informed buyers of Hyundai?

Assuming Planet Hyundai sells other brands, would you buy another brand from them? If they do sell other brand(s), please let us know what brand(s) they are.

I'm going to a new stand alone Hyundai Dealer. I always thought this was most important, and they have the factory trained certified mechanics. Unfortunately you don't need to be certified to work on Cars in my City. There is one guy at the shop that went for a Week of training though!. :D

Can you please share the dealer where you got the price for 2007 sonata limited. I got a price of $20300 +TTL for a 2007 Sonata Limited fully loaded (Pennsylvania)...compared to your price am paying almost $600 more for the car....help me out here....thanks...

The price I was quoted on 9/22/06 for a 2007 Sonata Limited in Steel Gray without the Ulimate Package (i.e. no options) was $20,465, less the $1,500 rebate and less the Loyalty rebate (since I'm an existing Hyundai owner) of $500 for a total before TTL of $18,465. This is from their internet sales department. Due to Edmunds.com rules, I can't give you the salesman's name.

The dealer is Pugi Hyundai/Mazda/VW in Downers Grove, IL. I had an absolutely wonderful experience buying our 2006 Elantra GLS sedan from them in December 2005 as a Christmas present for my wife, and I plan to return to buy a Sonata Limited from them before the end of the year. Simply put, they're good people, and treated me very well.

Do a web search for Pugi Hyundai, and send them an e-mail and ask for a quote.

Why not try to get a "better" deal now that you know what one buyer paid?
  • babybush25babybush25 Member Posts: 2
We're going on vacation, out-of-state for two weeks and my husband doesn't want to be rushed into a decision,so when we get back we can take our time, research more cars and more dealerships. This is a very good forum for feedback and info. All of you do a very good job,I've learned so much in the past two days.Thanx for your reply Jack47.I'll let you know what car we picked if any, this year.

Western PA area bought back in August

    21,900 before TTL

    1314.00 TAX

Title/License/Doc fees were around $100-$150 altogether.

    No Trade

Also opted for 10yr./100k bumper to bumper warranty which came out to an additional $900 all said and done

Somewhere around 24,500 OTD for both car and warranty.

I was thinking about not getting the extended warranty, but the piece of mind is nice, and he just got lucky w/ his sales example of power window motor repairs (yeah, I've had back luck on those in the past).

All in all I could have done a little better I'm sure. Someone is always going to get a better deal. But the above price was offered to me right out of the gate w/ no game playing and/or hidden fees and other types of sales trickery. Not to mention the let me do whatever on my test drive. I appreciated this, and felt the no B.S. offer was honestly a fair price.

This is in comparison to another local dealer, which after playing games w/ the way he worded questions about what I wanted to pay(sale price vs. how much over invoice), came with an original offer of $1600 more than what I paid. Once I told him I got a better deal, all of the sudden he could do better. But his poor attitude at this point cost him a sale. He literally scalded me on the phone for finding a better deal! Not to mention I was sorta handcuffed for my test drive. Pretty much got to make a citcle in the parking lot and come back. Also tried to sell both the extended bumper to bumper and paint protection plans as only one, gave me the impression this was the only choice I had. Only until I went to the second dealer did I find out these were actually 2 seperate plans.

Actually I am trying to buy it.
But the sales person said that "if you buy that price, you should bring the contraction".
It may be strange to you, could you help me this?

Is this a good deal or can i get a better deal ?

    Thanks
  • fastfredfastfred Member Posts: 31
This sounds like an awsome deal.. Let me make sure I've got this straight. 2007 V6 Limited with Ultimate package? So the cars was about 21,250, plus about 640 in tax and about 60 in Reg fees?? What about the rebate, how much was that? No trade I take it.. Did you get the mudgards, trunk mat and carpeted floor Mats?
  • dudenjdudenj Member Posts: 14

  • fastfredfastfred Member Posts: 31
Do you know how much of a rebate you were getting in that quote? Any of the extras stuff mentioned either?

    Thanks
  • dudenjdudenj Member Posts: 14
The price included a $1500 rebate, no other extra stuff.

Is this a good deal ? Are there any other dealers out there in MD or VA area where i can get a better deal ?

    Thanks
  • fastfredfastfred Member Posts: 31

Hello all, new to these boards as well as the exciting world of driving! Looking forward to purchasing my first vehicle, looking at the Sonata LTD w/ Ultimate package. Has anyone in the Chicagoland/Illinois area come across any good deals? Also, I just got my liscense this year and am under 25, so my insurance is going to be astronomical. Anyone know of any reasonable insurance companies that work with beginning drivers?

The best priced are Century 21 And Esurance, just log on to their websites to get a quote.
  • guestguest Member Posts: 770
I realize by paying Sticker + Car payments can seem like house payments but...

Century 21 is a real estate Company. You must be thinking of 21st Century Insurance, known last century as 20th Century Insurance. :confuse: :shades: :lemon:

Insurance rates vary from company to company and by each company's experience in a given geographic area.

Company "X" may have great rates in one area of a given state and have extremely high rates in another area of the same state.

I'm an insurance agent in CT and have seen where a company offers great rates in one town and is not even in the same ball park in a nearby town. The same holds true from state to state, based upon the laws from one state to another and the company's experience from a town in one state to a town in another state.

A trend that has been developing in the last few years is the use of credit scoring in determining an individuals rate. Agents don't see a prospect or client's actual credit rating, but the company gets a credit score from the major credit rating agencies based upon a range of credit ratings. Again, how each company weighs the credit score can vary from one company to another.

Thanks babybush. I did treat it as a job so it worked out well in the end.
If you want, give me your email address (is that allowed here?) and I'll give you the name of my contact there. Might simplify things for you. Obviously I can't guarantee anything but it's worthwhile to negotiate with him.

I got a quote from a dealer 17500 for SE model (including all rebates) before taxes/fees etc. Sunroof package is additional 810. Does that sound ok or i can negotiate further? How much can I bring it down? This is in NJ.
  • dudenjdudenj Member Posts: 14
Which dealer is this in NJ ? I got a quote of $19,152 before taxes/fees after rebates for a 2007 LTD, without any options.
  • mamamia2mamamia2 Member Posts: 707
I am not sure about how good of a deal is OTD $21,500.

What I DO know, however, is that there are MANY MANY complaints about the new, 2007 Camry, especially about the Camry's transmission.... Go read what posters are telling each other on these very Edmund forums.... Some Camry owners are suggesting plain and simple "don't buy the new Camry"...
  • gr82havegr82have Member Posts: 3
I got the same price for Limited model as yours. Question is : Is this what other buyers are paying for SE and Limited in NJ....any feedback guys?

I am thinking in buying a Sonata after all good reviews I have read. I am in Dallas Texas. Two things that worry me a little. Car High depreciaton values and car low resale value. I heard that Hyundays also have a more expensive insurance premiums than a Toyota for example.

Camry 07 seems to have too many problems with transmission to go there. Accord as well as Camrys cost much more than a fully equipped Sonata LTD even with Full package 8 (moonroof and Infinity Premium system).

How much I should pay for a car like this? I have seen here posts with much lower prices than Edmunds TMV or even Kelly's Blue Book True Market Value prices.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Freeman Hyundai in Irving, TX (Internet sales) will sell Sonatas & Santa Fes for Invoice - rebate - $400 (part of holdback).
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
High depreciation and low resale value are one and the same.

How long do you plan to keep the car? Three years from now the Sonata MAY have a better relative resale value...that's a gamble you have to decide upon. If you plan to keep the car for at least 6 years, the resale value difference becomes less significant.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Also when looking at resale value/depreciation, be sure to consider actual dollars out of pocket and not percentage of MSRP, as those can be misleading. By spending less for a car up front, you can make out OK financially on dollars lost in depreciation vs. the alternatives that supposedly have a lower depreciation as a percentage of MSRP.

    Hi everyone. :)
I have quotation of Sonata 2007 limited no option.
    20,899 OTD(San Diego. Tax 7.75%)
I am trying to down the price.
    Is this good price?

After renting a Hyundai and needing a 3rd car for the family, I ended up with a Sonata. I owned a 95 Camry. The build quality IS THE SAME. I am a mechanical engineer and it's my opinion that the quality is 95% or more that of the Camry. Cost:benefit analysis: MUCH more value per dollar with the Hyundai. I picked up the "stripped down" Sonata (2006 with a V-6). My wife drives this locally and I am a little disappointed in the experienced mileage: ~21.5mpg. However, for $17,000.00 (before taxes) this car's value is the best in the market. I love the suspension, the solid feel of the car and the power/acceleration is amazing for a $17k car!

Your concerns: depreciation & resale value are two sides of the same coin. This is a single concern, not two. The question needs to be your perception of value (unless you are concerned with others' perception of you driving a Korean car: I was/am still bothered as my preconceived notions & perhaps snobby feeling is vs. a Korean car). I bought this car, not to sell it but to drive it. My wife drives this with our wonderful children in it. My 15 year old will drive it in a year or two. Six air bags, standard. ABS & Traction Control & STABILITY control STANDARD!!! The trip-tronic shifter is a greater adder as well. I love being able to down shift vs. breaking when practical. My car is a 2001, 8 cylinder Mustang. The 2006 Hyundai is a fantastic balance of styling (albeit copied from everyone), value (soooo much thrown in as standard + an amazing warranty) and truly amazing quality. TAKE IT FOR A TEST DRIVE. Then test drive a SIMILARLY EQUIPED CAMRY - Do this the same day. Consider with & without the cost. Then your final decision, if you are as cash strapped as me, will be a no brainer.

Sorry for so many words. I went to an opera in NYC (my first in my 43 years) and I felt a funny mix of embarrassement (my hangup) and pride over my smart decision when my Sonata pulled up to a Beemer 5 series.

Good luck with your decision. NOTE: Current resale value IS a concern is you plan to buy & sell within a year or two. Three + years down the road, if the quality/value continues, the resale value will change...or Toyotas will sell for less. This is simple business thinking but true....my viewpoint.

    God bless,
    Rob

LOL. "Stripped down" 2006 GLS is quite a statement. How many more features does it have than other makes costing much more money?

I also wonder how many people know Hyundai is a Korean car. My Sonata is an '05 and people ask me "what kind of car is that?". When I tell them "Hyundai", many will ask "who makes that?"

And don't be concerned about what someone else thinks about your choice of cars. Heck, we'd all be mortgaged to the hilt if we stretched ourselves just to try to impress the other guy on the street (or at a social function).
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
I checked Freeman's website and noticed that they were advertising the 2007 GLS model for $15,988.00 though not sure how often they update their website and whether that price is still valid.
  • tuebrooktuebrook Member Posts: 10
I am also from Michigan. No, this is not a good deal. You can get a fully loaded 2007 Sonata Limited with Ultimate package for the same money. How? ..... take a $60 flight to Baltimore and have a Fitzgerald Auto salesperson come pick you up (check it out at www.fitzmall.com). Then all you have to do is tackle the 500 mile drive home. I am planning to do this myself but first I am going to challenge the local dealers to match the deal (it will be a real surprise if they do but I will give them a shot). :)
  • dump_truckdump_truck Member Posts: 42
If so his price isn't as bad as you might think, if he is quoting OTD price correctly and including the ultimate package on the 2006 anyway. That price at Fitzmall is before taxes. I would think a dealer would match the price, or get close enough to make it worth your while if they believe you are serious about doing all of that. I know 2 different dealers in my area got close enough (within $200). Now if there is no sales tax in Mich, then by all means if you have 10+ hours and $100+ to waste then knock yourself out.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
Remember, you still will need to pay Sales Tax in your home State, if your home State charges Sales tax.

I just visited the Fitzmall web site for the first time, and their "Delivered" price, including rebates for a 2007 LX (yes LX, not Limited?) is $3000 more than what I paid before Tax for the loaded 06 LX?. :) :confuse: :shades:

Anyone on the board with specific experience with the various Hyundai dealerships in Hampton Roads?

I'm looking at (FINALLY, after over a year of waiting) buying a Sonata... maybe, if the price is right.

But I've never purchased from any of the local Hyundai dealerships (in fact, I've only bought one car in the last 15 years... I have four, but my wife bought a Taurus in 1995, a month before I met her, my stepson was given one as a birthday present (a 1991 Tracer, used, bought new by his grandfather), my (then new) 1989 Camaro, and a 1996 Plymouth Voyager (bought used in 2000), so my familiarity with local dealerships is dated).

As you can tell, I'm a "Buy and Keeper" so the Hyundai's long warrenty is really pulling me to it, even more than it seems a terrific car (I get to rent cars frequently for work, and I've test driven a couple of new Sonatas).

Since this is "Buying Experience"... someone has to know the scoop on the various Hyundai groups... I know there are at least four, though not all in Southside Hampton Roads.

also wonder how many people know Hyundai is a Korean car. My Sonata is an '05 and people ask me "what kind of car is that?".

Hyundai, as you know, is a Korean company but the Sonata is assembled in Alabama.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
You're correct, I should have said "Korean Company." Good point. '06 MY was the first for American assembly V6 models. Are the I4's now being built here?
