For someone in NYC, I'd think a better alternative than Chicago is Fitzmall. They seem to have consistently low prices, and if not the lowest-price-ever probably much lower than you can get in NYC, and maybe worth the drive. 1000 miles is a long ways to go. Chicago's only 7 hours for me so it would be an option though.

"Ha...buying a car is not that simple, deliberately so, how else can the auto buying public be fleeced. It's a conspiracy. I'm amazed how quickly the Japanese and Koreans learned the way of marketing American Style. I'm curious if cars are marketed the same way in their respective countries".
  • cableguy06cableguy06 Member Posts: 299
As I think we all know, its not the Korean's or Japaneese adapting to the way of American marketing but American's applying what they have done with American cars to that of all import brands.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
The price I got from Fitzmall was 20151 which includes a $99 doc fee. To this you add the cost and time of getting to Maryland and the cost and time of driving the car back.

In comparison, Cars Direct gave a quote of $19802 pick up in NYC. Right now this appears to be the better deal.

All this for a car. Isn't this fun.

    Hi All,

Can anybody tell me what is included (apart from standard) in Limited ulitimate package. I test drove a car this saturday and the sales rep there told me that the car I drove is fully loaded limited edition and that they can sell it for under 20k not OTD but just the car price including destination.

I would be buying a car this week but what would be a good deal(OTD) for Limited ultimate package in NJ area?

Bottomline is, my 2 questions are 1) what options does limited ultimate package have 2) What would be a decent OTD price.

    I sincerely appreciate any help.

    Thanks......

    adat,

The Hyundai website is a great resource on colors, equipment, packages, etc. Give it a try!
  • adatadat Member Posts: 9
Sorry about the first question. After looking at the hyundai website, could figure out what Ultimate package is but I would still appreciate all your suggestions as what would be a decent OTD price for the Limited ultimate Sonata. I am not good at bargaining and would rather just ask the dealer if he can sell me teh car at X price.

So please let me know what should be a decent OTD for this car.

    Thanks,

Lots of info on prices paid right here in the "Prices Paid" forum. Just go back a few pages and start reading. Sorry to sound snotty, but it's all here, just take the time to look and read.

    Think 20k + TTL.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
The Edmunds TMV© tool is excellent, as well as KBB, Kelly Blue Book.

Asking the dealer if he can sell you the Car at a certain price just doesn't sound like the best way to buy?.
  • adatadat Member Posts: 9
Thanks jlindh and miamixt for your rersponses.

KBB or TMV are definitely not a great way to look for prices at this time of the year I guess as they dont consider the timing I guess meaning towards the end of the year we should get better deals and also they are more average prices rather than best deals.

I know that Asking the dealer if he can sell you the Car at a certain price might not be good idea but I would do that only after I find from more knowledgable people here as what would be a good deal and from there even if dont get THE BEST deal atleast I will know that I am not geting a bad deal either.

    Thanks......
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
eh TMV© is from Edmunds, as trusted a source as you will find. As we are in almost the start of the new Model year, the best Deals were on the remaining 06 Sonatas, but they are gone, too late. :surprise:

I know you have little faith in Edmunds, & the Edmunds TMV©, but check out this article from Edmunds!.

You have to take in consideration that people have done what they have done and they cant go back once you sign that contract that is it, im sick of people like you telling people what they are doing wrong but hey at least they are getting a fair price you need to stop being so judge mental.

I've been trying to purchase the 2007 Sonata Limited in the NYC area but the lowest price I've received, including the Ultimate option package is $22,225. That's without TTL but it does include the freight, advertising and hold back. Does anyone know where I can purchase this ride for the $20,600 (or close )that Phillips27 was able to secure? Thanks.
  • cableguy06cableguy06 Member Posts: 299
I bought mine for $20,770 and that included the Powder White Pearl paint option ($170 invoice) and the carpeted mats and mud guards. I tried to help out sligg but my dealership told me that the additional incentives they were provided by Hyundai have gone away and that they can't get that agressive anymore without taking a huge hit themselves. It sounds like the big differentiating factor is that of the advertising and hold-back monies as I did NOT pay either one.

The only difference in our two deals is the custom paint option so this is making excellent sense as the delta is on the penny (the mud guards and mats were are another story that I won't get into now).

I would think that they may get agressive again as the end of year approaches and they want to rid You may want to wait until around Dec. 15 or immediately after Christmas and see if their attitude changes.

What dealers have you been too. I'm currently dealing with all of them but no luck thus far. I'm looking for the 2007 Sonata Limited Base (no sun roof) Steel Gray with black interior. No dealer has this car in stock.
  • trunvestrtrunvestr Member Posts: 32
Cableguy thanks for the feedback. I think you're on the point. The offer I received included $742 holdback and 600 in advertising. Without that I'm in the ball park. I'm not looking to beat anyone's deal but I don't want to overpay by $1,500. I want the car but not at that price. I think I'll wait until after turkey day or xmas as you suggest. As an aside as I sat to talk to the salesman he asked for my driver's license to get my name and address so he could fill out some sales form. Since I didn't want him holding my license "hostage" or running unapproved credit checks I stated that I would tell him the vitals as he wrote them down. Their games are so tired.
  • trunvestrtrunvestr Member Posts: 32
Sligg, I've been to Hempstead, Valley Stream and Brooklyn. Hempstead sales people were by far the worst.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
    Dear old Millenium Hyundai.

I was there 3 weeks ago and as usual I walked out. I got hit with "We will beat the price if you buy today."

    The manager is real pushy.

On their sales contract they have preprinted: "Administrative Fee" $375. I asked what this fee was about and the salesman's comment was "They always get this fee." Do you believe people pay this fee?

In Brooklyn, stay away from Guifrie Hyundai. They gave me a hard time in getting back a deposit-it took 5 weeks. Plaza, I'm still dealing with them but they don't appear to be of much hope for a good deal. They are looking for the car I want-it seems the black interior even though listed as an option in the brochure is not yet available.

Nemet Hyundai in Queens has a delivery fee $437 preprinted on the contract.

It might be a good idea to wait this purchase out till next month.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
Did this quote include the $1500 rebate?

No bargains with Fitzmall plus you have to get to Maryland and back. If you have them deliver to NYC, they charge $500.

Have you tried CarsDirect? I don't have any feed back on them.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
    Another website you can try:

    www.driveone.com

This is a buying service that supposedly charges $100 over invoice. Plus they add on $50 and disguise it in the MSRP and Invoice. For example:

    MSRP published: $23595.
    Their MSRP: $23645

Driveone offered no explaination for this add on.
  • trunvestrtrunvestr Member Posts: 32
Yes the $22,225 included the $1,500 rebate and yes I did try carsdirect.com. Based on where I live the dealer that contacted me was Millennium. I wouldn't mind paying Driveone.com the $100 fee if I knew I would get the cost down below $21K.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
$22,225 seems high, but with Taxes & Fees, that sounds like what the Dealers are trying to get this year. Last year the Deals were much better, by far for the same Car. And as Sal (sliggi) knows, it is Illegal to add on to the MSRP, Federal Law. Sure they can add on to the Retail or Selling price, but the MSRP can never change.

    "Administrative Fee" $375."

I'd be happy to pay any addditional fees they can come up with...after I deducted those from my "last offer". If they can pulll that stuff on us...we can do it on them!

So, with best laid plans I began my extensive search for a good price in Atlanta-- but my car had other plans and konked out on the side of the road. So, in theory I should have haggled more, but I needed a freakin car.

    2007 Sonata Limited (standard)

Retail Selling Price: 21076 (19576 after rebate)
    Invoice Price: 21052
Dealer add-ons: 400 (service charge, but floormats for free)
    Rebates/Incentives: 1500
Trade In Price (If applicable): 750
Tax Paid & Tax Rate (If applicable): 1451 (7%)
    Tag & Title costs: 39
    Miscellaneous State fees: 3
[APR: 4.9%, better than my own credit union]
    total: 20718

So far, I LOVE my car, even with the annoying items mentioned in other forums (i.e., the worthless audio controls). It's a huge improvement over my Chevy.

    Trunvestr,

I dont know how far you are from NJ but I got couple of decent quotes in NJ. One is from Towne hyundai at denville (19k Hyundai sonata limited ultimate with out TTL) and global Hyundai said they can do below 20k so may be if you can bargain they might come down a bit.I almost wanted to buy at Towne hyundai but I could not pull the triger though as I am still strugling to decide between a used Luxury car(A6 or ES 330) or a brand new Sonata. Good luck to youy.
    Thanks,
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
I had problems with the NJ dealers last year trying to buy the 2006 Sonata. NJ does not cap the doc fee as they do in NY, so the NJ dealers can charge what they want. If I remember, one of the dealers had a $299 doc fee preprinted on the contract.

Towne Hyundai at $19000 (with rebate included?) for the Limited Ultimate is a super value. It also would be a good price for the Standard.

In fact that price is unheard of so whatever you did, buy it. I assume it's only a quote. It would be interesting to know when you sit down to buy, what gimmicks the dealer comes up with. Do keep us posted.
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
Do those quotes INCLUDE the $1000 rebate?
  • trunvestrtrunvestr Member Posts: 32
The $19k figure for the 2007 Limited Sonata sounds good but youi'd have to add the about $1,600 for the ultimate (08) option package then you're up to the the $20.6K that I have not been able to find in NY. I agree that the "quote" will probably change when you sit down to do business.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
Let's see how the game is played.

For my zip code CarsDirect gave me a quote for the 2007 Sonata Limited Base $19802. On their follow up call they told me that Global Hyundai in NJ was the dealer that would get me the car and in addition I pay a Documentation Fee $289 and window etch fee $199. I'm sure that when you get to the dealer there will be pin striping and other goodies that are added.
Youu can't win the price game with any referral service. They are shilling for the dealers and you are playing against a stacked deck that is difficult to overcome. It's the same whether you use Costco, BJ's, Credit Unions, online websites, etc.

Email quotes are a con just to get you into the dealer. And then it's plucking time. I have doubt about some of the prices that I read on the forum.

In NYC I rarely see any Sonatas, so I'm wondering if they are selling in the tri-state area.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
Two email quotes from Towne Hyundai in NJ:

    Sonata Limited

    Standard...$19052
    Ultimate...$20627

I'm waiting for a call back to ask for the added dealer charges and you can bet there will be some.

This all gets so tiresome having to go through these numbers dealer after dealer after dealer.

Can you guys tell me where you're getting these prices. I live in NY and I tried the Hyundai website "build your vehicle" feature. For the Sonata Limited standard I'm getting a price of 22,995 before the $1500 cash back. Where did everyone see the low prices posted here? I find it hard to believe I'm paying $2000 more for living in NY.
  • cableguy06cableguy06 Member Posts: 299
Go to www.kbb.com and you will see the invoice pricing and can build it there to see both MSRP and invoice side by side.

Just remember that advertising costs are not shown on Kelly Blue Book's website so what a dealer quotes as invoice could be $500 higher to account for the ad fees.

A 2007 Limited with the Ultimate package should sell for no more than $20,600 and that is having both advertising fees and dealer hold-back removed from the deal. Without the Ultimate package, take off about $1600 or a sale price around $19,000.
  • miamixtmiamixt Member Posts: 600
I find it interesting that you don't mention that other site:

    (We're on it right now!)

    Use the TMV© tools too!.
  • cableguy06cableguy06 Member Posts: 299
oops...sorry  You are correct. I just find Kelly Blue Book a more user fiendly site with information presented in an easier to read format.

I hope Pat or Karen don't remove my post :surprise:

The prices you get from Hyundai website are list. You have to add the destination fee of $650 to the list for a final cost of $23645. This is the MSRP.

The prices you see mentioned in the forums are quotes from different dealers usually gotten by email. You will find these quotes to be meaningless as you usually won't be able to buy the car at quote. Go back to the start of the forum discussions and you will get an education in the tricks of the trade.

As I said in a previous post, the dealer cost is an illusion foisted on a gullible consumer group. This number is bandied about as being the bible and that it is so readily available makes it a "pie in the sky" target.

No two deals are ever alike even at the same dealer. So where do you go from here. I have spent several months on this forum, visited at least seven dealers in person, have contacted at least fifteen dealers by email. What have I learned: everything and nothing. The game is rigged: You don't buy a car; They sell you a car.

When I bought my 2006 Sonata LX in Jan. I made the contact with the dealer via Edmunds. I knew exactly what the dealer's cost was including the hold back. I am a pretty good negotiator and indicated that I was going to finance part of the cost. First "difference" was the interest rate but we settled to my satisfaction. The papers were prepared and when I checked the final numbers there was the $500. Internet advertising fee added on. I put my pen in my pocket and made it clear that there was no deal if that fee remained. The sales manager came over and removed it quickly. Now you have to understand that I buy a car at the end of the month when they are pushing to do their "quota". The deal was perfect, so much so, that I bought a 2006 Azera Limited from the same dealer in August. I have become friendly with the sales manager and general manager and actually stop into the showroom every so often to chat. So you see, do your homework, and the buying experience can be a pleasant one. With both cars I negotiated a price and then indicated that I had a lease with 1 month left (2003 Acura TL's) on 2 cars and they took off the lease payment from the bottom line. If I were to get a "wiseguy" salesperson and or the dealership was trying to be "cute" I would get up and walk. Believe it or not they want to sell cars and if you have your checkbook at the ready, they will bend. Important to remember that they are in business to make a profit and are entitled to it, but within reason. Then everyone is happy. :)

    Amen brother!

And who is this wonderful, benevolent dealer that is so accomodating. Certainly not a NYC/Long Island dealer. Still they tried to sneak $500 past you. But you were sharp enough to spot this overt act of stealing because that's all it is...STEALING. But it's okay because it's called dealer negotiation. Bulls..t.

You make no mention of what you paid for the LX.
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
....If I remember, one of the dealers had a $299 doc fee preprinted on the contract. ....

When I bought my '95 Camry the contract had a charge of $59 for "computer fee" preprinted in bold lettering. The salesman said he couldn't do anything about that charge as it was preprinted.

I said "I can". And then crossed it out.
  • sliggsligg Member Posts: 109
My, my aren't car dealers imaginative. They have perfected the art of the FLEECE. The computer fee is a new one on me.

It just galls me when someone posts about the pleasant experience they had buying X car from Y dealer.

I will repeat from a previous post: You don't buy a car from a dealer; The dealer sells you a car.

And only when you agree to his numbers. How the f...can you win when you are playing a game that is rigged against you no matter what you think you know or how smart you are, or how good you are at negotiating. Yep! It's a stacked deck.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
It just galls me when someone posts about the pleasant experience they had buying X car from Y dealer.

Why does someone else having a pleasant experience gall you? Some people intentionally don't try for the best deal because they don't want the hassles you are talking about here. They'd rather go to a no-haggle dealership, for example, than play all the games. They may wind up paying a few hundred bucks more for their car, but maybe they figure it's a fair trade for not having to deal with the aggravation that buyers like you go through.

I'm not saying they are right or you are wrong, it's just a different approach that works for some people.

    Remember Backy;

Sal has been to 13 greater New York City Hyundai dealers, and removed from each of them?. :P

Great response btw in that Sonata LX survey forum. I couldn't be happier with both the Car, and the price paid. I did find it interesting that J.D. Powers rated the Sonata 3rd in initial quality (out of 17), in fact the lowest Hyundai behind the Accord & the Camary in the Midsize segment. In the Large segment, the Azera is # 2, and in the compact segment the Elantra is #2, and in the Compact Multi-Activity Vehicle segment, the Hyundai Tucson is # 1. . Read it in the brand new Hyundai Smart Driver Magazine. Did you get that $40 coupon, good for any service at any dealer. I love that publication, and I love my LX!

    Happy Thanksgiving! :)
  • cableguy06cableguy06 Member Posts: 299
How can you receive that magazine? Sounds like its worth it just for the coupon :D
  • trunvestrtrunvestr Member Posts: 32
Yeah, I don't know how trying to sneak an extra $500 past a customer qualifies as a pleasant experience but I guess considering it he means it could have been worse. Still no out of the door price was given for the Sonata LX. The JD Powers rating pertains to the LX which is the 2006 model NOT 2007. I also agree that we are being SOLD a car as opposed to BUYING a car. I guess if we wait long enough the dealer and us will either agree on a price or they will be stuck with the merchandise or sell to someone less demanding. By the way the longer that car stays at the dealership there's a carrying cost.

Pleasant experience? No haggle dealers for a Hyundai? Where are they?

I'm not talking about the best deal. I'm talking about the dealers right to steal. You can apologize for the dealer all you want but that's all they do is steal money from your pocket. Oh, I forgot...you call it negotiation.

Isn't it convenient for the dealer that these late charges are sometimes discovered after the deal has been completed.
But these salt of the earth dealers wouldn't think of ripping you off-no, it's called negotiating, part of the American folklore.

And if you think you won the first round, then they put you through another torture chamber-the F & I room to deal with a first class talented heist artist.

Oh yes, a pleasant experience between you and the honorable dealer.

PT Barnum had it wrong (he probably never bought a car).
How can there be a sucker born every minute, not when it comes to negotiating with a dealer. We are all lollipops just begging to get fleeced like a duck-quack...quack...quack, please give me back my wallet, oh, mighty dealer.
