The filter for the 4cyl is an internal filter. I didn't see those when I worked at J-lube because the 2.3L wasn't out yet. The 6 cyl filter is the same one that goes on V6 Contours, Duratec Taurus/Sables, Tribescape, MPVs and maybe a couple others that I can't think of now.

Yes, you may need a special tool to get at the 4cyl filter. Internal filters are still pretty easy, but they are a little bit more messy.

life's too short to worry about "getting even" ten times over....I guess you and I have different priorities in life.

    on to the next one.

I don't get that worked up about everything, but that situation was unique IMO. The dealership blatantly lied to the customer's face and kept the customer's property for whatever reason (it doesn't matter). I wouldn't want the salesperson fired, but everybody involved in the situation in the service department should definately have to pack up and get out. What they did to 626to6 is disgusting.

I think newcar31 is right. If they did something wrong, then bust them. Its indifference that allows stupid stuff like that to continue unchecked. There's no incentive for change if nothing is done...

I've been the unfortunate owner of 3 Fords that all suffered from transmission, head gasket, alternator and power steering pump problems. How much of the 6 is Ford and how much of it is Mazda? If the trans is from Ford, I can't see myself buying a 6. I know the 6 cylinder engine is from Ford but what about the rest of the car?

The 6 cylinder engine is NOT from Ford. The block is, the engine itself as a unit is NOT. Nor is the transmission.

And every company builds some good cars, some not so good.

If a little Ford involvement scares you a little, you might do better to buy something else. Just understand that FORD parts can be found in many brands, not just Fords or cars from companies owned by or partly by Ford.

she never forgets ... and always gets back with a vengeance... revenge served cold....

But I am different.. I will show them that they made a mistake worth $200 and tie them up in wraps so that they offer me $400.00 of goods and they will be happy to do so!!!

I saw that post too and thought she was talking to or about me. Anonymousposts would be none too happy about that.

In the past 28 years I've owned a Plymouth Barracuda, a Mazda MX-6, a Pontiac Grand Prix, a Honda Civic, and 13 Volkswagens: 6 Sciroccos, a Corrado, 2 Jettas, 2 New Beetles and 2 Passats. I've never had a problem in sales or service (five different dealerships) which couldn't be talked out. Oh, a few of the "talks" were a little vigorous, but I do mean a little. There is just no sense in being so vindictive. If a customer is reasonable, a reasonable dealer will do everything possible to please that customer. Just my experience.

My next car will be a Mazda 6s, scheduled to be built in May, and if I have some problems with it I'm pretty sure that we'll be able to talk those out too. The surveys? I will fill them out to reflect my experience, not to punish. So far it's been great and I will expect it to continue that way through delivery and ownership of the car. Can't wait!

I saw my first 6 today on the road. Silver, sports package, very sharp. Looks like Boston is finally coming around and buying the 6!!

I still have not seen any mazda6 on the road yet.
i ordered my black mazda6 Gt V6, moon roof, leather, GFX, bose everything its loaded. about two weeks ago. I cant wait it is driving me nuts.

One question though i talked to some insurance companies and they quoted me anything from $6000 to $9000 a year,if i go under my own name. what is up with that. I have never got a ticket in my life. Why is the insurance so expencive on this car. One of my friends has a 2003 civic and he only pays $3000 a year. He is the same age that i am and he has had two speeding tickets. These insurance companies screw more and more people around every day. ITs BS. Like how can they expect anyone to pay $9000 a year just for insurance, just think in 3 1/2 years of paying that price i could buy two of these cars.

So i decided to go under my fathers name i will still be paying like $3000 a year but hey that is a hell of alot better then $9000.

Does anyone know if they are comeing out with a differnt panel for the dash so you can put a custom cd player in it.
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
That's some high insurance rate. Even in Canada.
  • buddy_2_buddy_2_ Member Posts: 30
Ya tell me about it, pretty bad hey. OUCH
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
cookie01: The MP3 player replaces the 6 CD changer slot. The cassette or minidisc players are installed where the dummy cover/panel is. Are you sure you didn't order the minidisc player or did the salesperson mistaken where the MP3 player goes?

The 6s (6 cyl) is indeed uses a standard type oil filter that does not require a special tool to tighten. The 6i (4 cyl) is a cartridge type oil filter that I heard is hard to get to.

buddy_2_: Yikes, that insurance rate is high! I'm paying about $2100/yr that includes my '99 Rodeo 4WD, 6s and my 17 year old son. Here's some earlier pics I took on my black loaded 6s MT I posted:
    http://www.msnusers.com/Mazda6group/shoebox.msnw?Page=Last.
This car is a dream come true. I have close to 3200 fun driving miles on it with no problems. A very solid handling car, especially in snow and icy road conditions.

  • nicdmxnicdmx Member Posts: 35
I think you need to shop around a little more for insurance. Either that or you are buying WAY more coverage than you need. Don't buy that insurance...it is a rip off.
  • buddy_2_buddy_2_ Member Posts: 30
hey thanks alot for the pics, it looks great.

thats the thing i have called about 5 differnt insurance companies and they are all in the range of 6000 and 9000 its horrable

Hey protege fan do you no if there is any of the mazda6 gt v6 with the gfx package at any of the dealerships there. With the manual tranny. I dont want to wait untill may or june.....
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
buddy_2_: I know how you're feeling that the temptation of owning a 6 is getting unbearable. After test driving a loaded 6i MT early Jan'03 I was sold on this car. I couldn't find the one I wanted, 6s MT w/sprt pkg, so I placed an order, but with persistent use of the on-line dealer's inventory I nailed the one in the pics. I don't know how you get to the Mazda site from Canada, like in the US we get in with Mazdausa. Do you have a lot of dealers in Alberta/Edmonton or within a decent driving distance? Have you checked the Canadian Mazda on-line dealer's inventory. I haven't checked lately since I have my 6. Sometimes they are not up-to-date, but it gives you a somewhat better feel of what 6 may still be there and may match close to your requirements. If you find the ONE, call them first to see if it is still available. Plus it sure beats driving around to each dealer finding one. Well, good luck and I hope you'll own that Zoom-Zoom experience soon!

Do you know where the 4cyl filter is at? Is it in the oil pan like some GM internals or under the hood like BMW internals, or is it somewhere else? Curious....
  • combustible1combustible1 Member Posts: 264
has anyone seen one yet?.. I'm curious to compare it to the chrome. I've only been able to see pictures of the chrome.
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
newcar31: I'm not sure where the 6i's oil filter location is. Any 6i owners know where your oil filter location is? I had e-mailed mazdaformance that I had a 6s and if they sell a oil filter removal/tighten tool for the as specified on the 6 owner's manual. He (Brian) replied that the 6s' oil filter is accessible and did not require any special tool, but that the 6i is another story.
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
combustible1: I have an earlier pic (posted on the MSN website) on the satin finish fuel filler door on my 6s (See post #9581). I've seen a chrome one on a silver and it looks too chromey, but that's my personal opinion and if you like the chrome look. The satin finish gives it more contrast look IMO. I think cookie01 has a chrome fuel filler door?
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
I added a couple more pics on http://www.msnusers.com/Mazda6group/shoebox.msnw?Page=Last
One on the that ingenious trunk hinge linkage mechanism someone had requested on an earlier post so there's no hinge intrusion into the trunk area and a closer view of the satin fuel filler door (pics taken in the garage).
  • combustible1combustible1 Member Posts: 264
I saw your pictures before (except for the new close-up) and I assumed that you had the chrome. Maybe pictures can't adequately show the difference.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the color basically looks the same, but the chrome has that brighter sheen, and the satin doesn't. Or, is the color different too?

At first I thought these things looked cheesy.. but they're starting to grow on me. Looks like I'm gonna get a Steel Grey 6 and now I'm considering whether or not to get one, and if so, which color? decisions, decisions!

My first move to get my old grille back was contacting my original salesperson. He told me to conatact him if I had any problems or needed anything. I first sent an email outlining the situation. The original grille wasn't damaged during removal. I saw it being removed. I picked it up and was going to put in my trunk, but I got intercepted. I didn't cause too big of a scene because I was confident I could get the grille back because the salesperson told me I could keep it. I figured he would do all he could to complete the sale. He replied to my email with an apology for the confusion and said he would call me later. Later he told me he had talked to the parts department and was able to get the grille back as long as I agreed to the 10's evaluation. Not a problem since I enjoyed working with him anyway. For my time he's giving me two free oil changes. I've always changed my own oil, so it will be nice to have a break. The survey is very important to him, but really has no bearing on the parts department. The saleperson was good and I will still feel good about giving him the highest score, because he was prompt in trying to fix the situation. Of course I'll keep the survey until I actually get the other grille.

Why do I want the original? It's more than principle. I may actually want to switch grilles at some point. I like certain aspects of the original, and may feel the need to swith depending on my mood.

Thanks for all of your responses. I was ready to go crazy in the dealership, but I didn't have to...at least not yet. I'll let you know when I actually get the original back.

anyone have any pictures of your car with the brand identification and dealer name stickers/emblems taken off? I would like to do this but once I take it off, I don't want to have to put it back on if the result isn't satisfactory

I agree that a letter to the General Manager about what happend with the service/parts department is in order. Be sure to mention that your salesperson was good and saved the deaelrship and you from alot of hassles... Like I mentioned in my earlier posts, nailing the salesperson on the survey wont help to improve the problem but it would hurt the guy who you liked....glad it worked out for you and hopefully you wont have any more problems with the dealership...

    Enjoy your new car!!!!

Well I'm here in Calgary and have this loaded Black 6 GT-V6 sitting in my garage. It been so miserable here (looking at 15- 20 cm of snow in my back yard) that I don't want to take it out. Only have 300km on it so far and let me tell you this car is a real dream. I have only seen one 6 so far on the road. A good web site for pictures is at WWW.mazdaclub.com, where you'll find a number of pictures of black loaded 6's. I'll send you a few pictures of my black beauty to your email address.

    Hey everybody,
I was wondering if anyone had a picture or could describe the sport grille now listed under the build options for the 6. I don't remember it being there before they redid the pricing set up on the web site. My initial thought is they may be selling the grill they have on the Japanese Atenza, but I hope they came up with something better because that would not be an improvement IMO. Sometimes the "chrome mustache" bothers me, but otherwise the car is everything I have been hoping for, and the options list is exactly what I need (okay want)
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
combustible1: No I have the satin finish door which is like a brush or stainless steel look. What do you mean by "Looks like I'm gonna get a Steel Grey 6 and now I'm considering whether or not to get one, and if so, which color?". Do mean whether or not to get a 6? I think the color majority, according to the Mazda6club survey, is Lapis Blue, but steel gray is nice and was my first choice. If you do get one with the chrome or satin finish fuel door, they throw in the original door. I guess in case you want to change it out later.
626to6: Your salesperson was really that good to you to get 10s? What kind sleezy tactic is your salesperson trying to pull. The original grille should have been yours in the first place, you paid for it plus the sports grille with no attachments. Glad they're going to give you 2 free oil changes, but did they give you a voucher/coupon or have it written? My suggestion is not to turn in your survey until after at least one free oil change.
milkman1: See the site posted on #9590. I have pics of the sprts grille on my 6s.

"Do mean whether or not to get a 6? "

no.. when I said "get one" what I meant was the replacement fuel door.. I KNOW that I'm going to be getting a 6.

    thanks.

Has also been made available in the Twin Cities. I just got the paper work on it this morning. I was hoping we would get that great promo!
Of course you have to currently own a Passat, Accord, Camry or Altima (and you can keep it if you are so inclined)
What a great way to ease the worries of a new model car huh?
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
I am glad to know the "gentleman" approach still works. Yes. I even get back "failed" parts when I have them replaced. It is a matter of principle.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
from the back, it looked great...except that the twin unfinished muffler/silencer chambers don't look good uncovered. Definitely need the rear bumper skirt to cover them up.

    Hey all.

Just took a serious test drive and got to spend a ton of time with the Bose system in the 6s. I was not overwhelmed, but not underwhelmed either. It's good enough not to be a deal breaker. However, two things struck me:

    1. The Bose system only allows you to adjust bass and treble while the base stereo allows midrange adjustments as well. I'd think the higher end stereo would have more adjustability of sound.
    2. At higher volumes, both Bose and base stereos gave me some speaker buzz. It could also have been door or speaker cover vibration, but it definitely put a damper on the quality of the system.

Are there any 6 owners that experienced this buzz? Also, since this seems to be a constantly-discussed topic, how do you owners feel about the sound system you currently have installed?

If you check out the car and driver forum, they have a thread on the upcoming May issue of CR which compares the 6, Passat, Accord and Hyundai XG350.
They ranked them as follows:Passat, Accord, 6 and XG350.

It states in it's summary only good things about the 6 but then in closing it states it is still a notch below the Passat, Accord and Camry but doesn't say why. Makes it sound like it's a notch below only because it's a Mazda. God I hate those kind of generalizations simply because Mazda isn't considered to have the same status. Has anybody rec'd their May CR to see if it explains why?
  • skyrayskyray Member Posts: 156
Hey, I was going to get the rear mud guards for both look and function (gets slushy here). Really liked how they "beefed up" the back of my Miata.

But when I went to order them from mazdastuff, I noticed there was no color coding. Are these not body color? (They are on the Miata...) Don't really want them if they're black or something.
  • alcjewalcjew Member Posts: 173
aromas: As I said before, I don't rely on test-all product mags like CR when I purchase something. The bottom line is how & what the real consumer or owners rate or feel about their purchased products, in this case cars. I guess CR hasn't heard about the Passat or Accord problems. I just paid a short visit on the Honda problem board and man can someone please put them out of their misery! Hey guys and gals were almost at the 10K posts.

mjvchicago: No buzzing from my Bose and its still sounds great wherever I drive! Mid-ranges are usually a wash anyway from what I learned in my acoustics course in college many moons ago. I can verify this with a couple of acoustics engineerings and audio freaks at work.

Reread the CR article. Yes, they liked the 6 fine, but they dinged it pretty heavily on engines that lacked low-end torque and were not as refined as the competition. And they felt the tauter ride, especially in the S, was not justifed in better handling. Finally, fuel mileage in the 6 was suppar - the Accord V6 got about the same mileage as the Mazda 4-cyl.

Mostly, I think CR's judgement reflects priorities of quietness, refinement, and economy rather than better handling and a sportier feel. They're clearly family sedan oriented rather than sports sedan oriented. OTOH, I don't think there is much doubt that, while the 6's engines are certainly "adequate", they just are a notch down from the best of the competition, especially the Accord. Honda has GREAT 4-cyl and V6 engines right now - clearly smoother, more torquey, and more economical.

skyray: Great! It's gonna be a blast! Maybe I'll drop by on Sunday and meet you and we can share stories and look at each others ride. I live about 10 miles from the stadium. I didn't catch if they were 6s' w/MT or AT or both they're using? Do you know or I can check the site again.

combustible1: I had a higher end Sony system I installed in my truck years ago and it too had only bass & treble digital adjustments. I'll have to dig up my notes/textbook from that acoustics class. It had to do with how well the human hearing can detect specific high and low frequency sound ranges. I think the prof said it is similar to certain color ranges in the spectrum. In sound, in between frequencies may be slightly undectable. But then again I'm not an acoustics expert or an audiophile. I'll ask my sound/acoustics experts at work this week.

Mark: It may be all that you said about the Honda engine, but have you read the Accord complaints with the engines that some owners are experiencing. Have you viewed the Mazda 6 problem area, not too many. I think the true judgement of how well product is put together is with the owners comments. With over 3200 mi on my 6s I no complaints or a hint of problems to report. I have no complaints about the Mazda enhanced Duratec V6 it's smooth, has more than adequate power and it gets the job done in a tame manner. I'm pretty sure the 6i owner's can remark the same. The Mazda 6 clearly wins the appeal/appearance catagory. I had mentioned at an earlier post that a guy I met at the mall parking lot with a '03 Accord Sedan EX MT had wished he had given the 6 a look before he bought his car. He wanted the V6 sedan w/ MT and he said that the 6 looked sharper/sportier than his EX. The Altima SE MT was out of the question due to complaints he's heard and read, mainly "torque steer" and pieces/parts delaminating.
I averaged about 24.4mpg the last time I refilled. At the moment, I have a tick over a half a tank (about 9+ gal) with 228 mi. 228/9= 25.3 mpg and I drive like a maniac. I think with the TCS turned off helped.
  • ruefusruefus Member Posts: 254
If you look - many if not most of the better quality home stereos only come with bass & treble adjustments. I've used Denon receivers for the last 15 years and they've never had more than bass & treble.

It's been a while, but if memory serves, a graphic equalizer has to be pretty high-end to not do more damage to the signal than good. Just cause you've got more parameters doesn't mean it'll sound better.

And screw Consumer Reports. Their reviews don't come from an enthusiast's perspective or even take that aspect into account. Balance their review against the likes of Road & Track and Car & Driver and you get a good, broad understanding.
