I think the ABS on Mazda6 is installed at the manufacturing plant while the whole car is assembled. As for brake performance, usually they're similar, with non-ABS able to stop in a shorter distance on dry pavement in a typical car, but ABS allows you to steer while braking on slippery surfaces, so you can try to avoid the obstacle while braking.

The ABS option on the mazda6 also includes EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) which essentially allows a computer to help maximize the caliper force on all four disc wheels, thus probably leads to shorter stopping distances too. So I personally prefer the ABS option than not.

Apparently some of the posters here think that 50 is "old" and are surprised someone of that age might drive a 6. Uh, guys, I'm 53 and bought my wife a 6s, steel gray, sport package w/all options, for her 50th birthday. We both love the car! You see, even us "old" folk enjoy a good driving machine (our previous cars have included 528 BMW, two Maximas, and, unfortunately, one sable, which we got rid of as soon as possible). Our biggest problem is staying below 90!
  • kdshapirokdshapiro Member Posts: 5,751
Once your wheels skid, the stopping distance becomes longer than ABS. This is of course the scenario on dry roads during a panic stop. Pumping the brakes is not as effective as ABS.

ABS with Active Brakes and EDB are the best of both worlds. There have been studies that have shown non-ABS stopping shorter than ABS on gravel or sand. I don't know about you buy 99.9% of my driving is done on (sometimes) nicely paved roads free from gravel. Given that, I'm not sure why anyone would not want ABS. It can save you a collision in inclement weather.

I think you're absolutely right, most buyers just want a car that's reliable, comfortable, fits what they want to put in it including # of people and has options they want.

They don't even use 50% of the car's handling and acceleration capabilities 99% of the time and don't care about them. Most don't derive much pleasure from driving their cars past when it is brand new. Many don't know how much HP their car has and don't care. A good number seem to want 6 cylinders no matter what the power and torque capabilities. And they don't care what the car looks like so long as they don't think it's really ugly--e.g. worse than the Accord as there are already so many on the road it must be above most people's ugly tolerance.

They buy something that will sound good when they tell their friends they got a new car. And most of all they don't want to make a mistake--everyone knows someone that bought a car they wish they hadn't and they don't want to be them.

Price and name, that's it. Tough for most of us on this board to understand. After all, I spend 1.5 hours commuting a day, I'm going to enjoy that time ;).

I generally agree with you that you never have a guarantee of a trouble-free car. Still, I don't think I've ever heard of a Camry (or Accord, Civic, Corolla) that was a real lemon (maybe kdshapiro can tell me I'm wrong about that point). A less reliable model might be fine--some Tauruses last forever, but plenty of people swore off Ford forever after having a Taurus or a Focus that they got rid of after a few years because they had so many problems. This is why so many people are leery of the 6 and say "Isn't that a Ford engine...?" but are willing to buy a new Honda before any reliability ratings are out. Personally, I'm satisified enough with the reliability ratings of the 626, Milennia and Protege from the last 5 years or so that I wouldn't worry about buying a new 6 or 3. Whereas the (US-built) Focus has had enough problems that I would be afraid to get one, even though probably the majority of the on the road are fine.

You're so right--most people never use much of their cars' handling abilities. Three times in the last year I've been frustrated by a 911 in front of me going too slowly on an off-ramp for me to enjoy the curve--and I'm in a 4-cyl Camry, which I don't even push to near its limit. (Okay, so twice it was the same car on the same curve, and it's a bumpy surface, so maybe the guy is trying to save his car's suspension.) Also, lots of people buy a BMW just because of the prestige, and never even begin to make use of the car's abilities. What a waste.

ABS saved my butt the other day. I was moving at >60 MPH in heavy freeway traffic, when suddenly the 2 cars ahead of me pulled into the next lane, revealing a car stopped in the lane ahead. Changing lanes was not an option. I just stomped hard on the brakes. I could feel the ABS kicking in. My Mazda6 stayed perfectly on track, never skidding. I came to a stop with just 4 feet to spare. If this had happened with my old '96 Accord, I'm sure I would have skidded out of the lane.

I for one don't find the 03 Accord ugly. The tail of the sedan looks bloated, but the couple definitely looks slick. I do prefer the looks of the 6 though. The Accord does have its virtues as a family sedan, not as a sport sedan. You shouldn't fault people for being ignorant just because they bought an Accord. Heck, even C&D ranked it higher than the 6.

If the Mazda3 gets more upscale options like NAV system,HID headlights,DSC system and rear adjustable headrests for NA market, does that mean that Mazda will be forced to upgrade features on the Mazda6 since currently its not offered and its a higher priced vehicle?

I emailed Mazda and asked will the Mazda6 get NAV for 2004 and she said Currently, Mazda is looking into having the Navigational System
available for the 2004 model. At this time, no official specification
information is available. We should have more information on the 2004
model towards end of this year.

    Thanks in advance!

"people buy a BMW just because of the prestige, and never even begin to make use of the car's abilities"

I'm not sure what that means. If it means doing illegal and dangerous acts on public roads, that is a sign of dangerous driver. BTW what prestige? A car doesn't have prestige, it has a reputation, both good and bad. I bought my Bimmer for it's reputation of performance, sophistication and quality. Quality, for those who quote CR,at least for me. No unscheduled service visits in 1.5 years, no squeaks or rattles, no issues. Total maintenance: $0.

Also to your other point, I have second hand experience with Hondas that have below average reliablity.

Mostly I forget about the looks of the Accord. Then I see another one, and think "how boring, it looks like a Japanese Buick". It's a fine car, but they clearly tried to play it safe in the styling department, I suppose so not to offend anyone. The Mazda6, on the other hand, looks sporty and "interesting", even if it does look like a Cavalier from the rear.

pzev, the short answer is YES.
I also got free roadside assistance for the term of the extended warranty(with an 1-800 number).

"I don't think my 6S has an 'auto' open for the moonroof. Am I missing something here?"

As was mentioned above, no. Our Escape (and the Tribute for that matter) have the "Auto" feature and I just assumed the 6 would be the same. Oh well, it was worth a shot. :)

I'm actually very shocked that the 6 does not have it but it's definitely not a deal breaker. It's a pretty common feature from what I've seen. Even the ZX5 we drove had it.

I hope some of you Mazda6 lovers in the Minneapolis area are planning to attend the "Mazda Rev it Up" event at the fairgrounds this weekend.

You can take some classes taught by pro drives in Braking and Steering and Driving lines etc. There are 4 timed tracks where you will be literally throwing a Mazda6 through the course. It is a great chance to drive Mazda's car harder than you might drive your own (or a test drive car).

There will also be a test track with a variety of other Mazda cars.

PLUS... They will have 2 RX-8 Hand made cars there that you can actually, sit in and crawl around in the back seat etc. They will even start the engine for you so you can hear her ZOOM.

Entrance to the event is FREE. The classes and timed trials are $39 on Saturday and Sunday (and your times are rated in the National contest) but if you want to do them for FREE, just tell them I sent you on a VIP pass on FRIDAY ONLY from 8-6.
Friday is NOT open to the public and is reserved for Mazda employees and any VIP guest with a referral. Everything you need to tell them (to be a VIP) is in my profile email address.

I wish I could go but my 17 year old cannot drive the events or even rided as a passanger. He would be too green with envy to watch me. Don't forget to tell us about your experience behind the wheel.

I also have to chime in about ABS availability. For me, there are two options that are non-negotiable: Manual Transmission, and ABS. If I lived somewhere where it was sunny year round, I would pass on it... but IMO ABS is necessary for any place where inclimate weather may be common. Plus, my insurance discounts for ABS, so they would at least in part pay for themselves. All other options are dependant upon availability and my wallet.

In my 150 mile radius, there are 58 6Is with a MT. Of those, only three(!) have ABS. One is fully loaded (too expensive), one has the appearance package (not worth the money), and one I MIGHT consider if I had to buy right now.

If I had a suggestion for Mazda (based solely on my personal preference), it would be to make ABS more available. The Protoge5 has an easily available ABS + Side Air Curtain package... I like that. Or perhaps pair it with the Sports Package - that would seem logical, and I doubt someone would NOT buy the sports package because of the ABS.

While I won't say the lack of ABS is a grievous error, since it seems most people don't care about safety in the US, I can say I really hope they make ABS more available in the 2004 model. Or I will have to look elsewhere.
  • boxfanboxfan Member Posts: 180
kdshapiro: Sorry, I didn't mean to offend any BMW owners, there are plenty of good reasons to buy a BMW. I do think that you can enjoy a car's performance without doing dangerous and illegal acts, though.

hokiedog: This is a really picky point, but the Protege5 has a package with ABS and side airbags for the front seat, which protect your torso. It doesn't include side curtain airbags (which are available on the 6), which are for the front and back seat and protect your head from SUVs crashing though your window. I totally agree with your comments, and they should package ABS with SAB/SCA on the 6, just to simplify things a little. auida8q, who is a Mazda dealer, swears that very few people want to pay for safety features and that's why it's hard to find a 6 with the airbag options.
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Yeah - most every car I've seen at the local Mazda dealers do not have either/or ABS/Traction Control or the SAB/SCA's. For me, knowing that I intend to keep this car for the next 8-10 years, I wanted every safety feature available. Especially with all the SUVs out there now. At least the side airbags/side curtains would MAYBE make a difference in a t-bone crash - god knows enuf people around here seem to run stop signs. So the safety features, for me, were a must-have.

A friend, on the other hand, just got a new Ford Escape, and she didn't want to the pay the extra $300-something dollars for the side airbags. To each their own I guess.

We wanted you to be the first to know that 50 top automotive
journalists from 22 countries voted the Mazda RX-8 RENESIS
engine "International Engine of the Year." In fact Mazda's new
rotary garnered nearly 30% more points than the next
    closest contender.

I have some MZ6 wagon and 5 door H/B news....

Job#1 on the H/B is Feb 2004 and Job#1 on the wagon is March 2004. Assuming no initial production glitches the cars should be on the dealers lots 6-10 weeks later.
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Maybe by then I'll have my sedan I ordered back on March 31, (2003) audia8q.

    ;-)

Any word yet on base prices? If/how much they'll differ from the sedans?

I really love my car and they could have named it "box on wheels" and I would have been able to look past the name and say "but it's a GREAT" car.
But... it just really makes no sense to name this car "6".
I went to get the M6s' oil changed for the first time yesterday. I went to a local chain place that has done my cars for about 6 years now. Always polite, always quick and always do a great job.
I pull in and the young woman starts putting stuff in the computer. I say "This is my brand new baby, so take good care of her!" and the woman smiles and types some more. Then she says "Protege5 right?"...
"No, it's a Mazda 6" I get a stare... More typing. "Hmmm, Not a Protege?"
"No" i say "It's a 6.. sorta like the 626, but a new vehicle to Mazda this year" She types some more. "I don't show a 626 for 2003"
"No" i say, "They stopped making them in 2002 in favor of the 6. This car has been for sale since December... you've not had one come through?"
She shakes her head and goes into the office to get a book. Thumbs through the book. (I'm thinking the book looks older than my car, probably not in there). Then she calls for a manager guy.

    He says "Protege5?"
    NOOOOO, I say. It's a 6!
    He says "Protege6???" ARRRRGGTGG..
Finally they get a different book and it looks newer and they decide which filter I need and type stuff into the computer probably minus the actual make of the car...

Seriously. This car has been around (more or less) since Dec. I saw my first ad for it during NFL playoffs. This basically means folks who bought early might even be on their second oil change... sigh. Similar to insurance companies. Geiko when I first called listed me as a 626, but had it changed by the time I got my cards... but that was THREE months ago...
  • audia8qaudia8q Member Posts: 3,138
no prices yet....I don't expect pricing until a month or so before production starts.
  • kdshapirokdshapiro Member Posts: 5,751
No offense. I like to find out what people really mean by enjoying the abilities of their car to the fullest. To some it is the track, to others it is believing the street is the track. To me, it is just enjoying.
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
I don't think GM would have a field day if Mazda ran a commercial on their reliability. Besides put a 6 next to a Regal. Which car is a 30 year old person going to choose? The 6 of course. Thats a different audience: Mazda's audience compared to Buicks audience.

cookie01: Welcome to the brand name/model recognition frustration club.
It happened to me so many times.

Is this the reason that people buy CamCords? :-)
  • audia8qaudia8q Member Posts: 3,138
Your correct about Buick's audience being different than mazda's....Buick sells more cars to people over 70 than to people under 40.
  • gearhead10gearhead10 Member Posts: 84
Sorry, didn't mean to offend Accord owners out there and I didn't say they were ignorant. JMO that the rear end is rather, er, unattractive. More character than the Camry though. Rest of car is fine, if somewhat bland. My point was that many, many people either disagree with me or just don't care.
  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
*Many don't know how much HP their car has and don't care. A good number seem to want 6 cylinders no matter what the power and torque capabilities.*

Exactly! How many buyers and prospective buyers have you seen looking under the hood or down on their knees looking at the new rear suspension? None I'll bet!

Carguy and audia8q: Not necessarily!! I use to buy Buicks when I was in my 30's ('61 Skylark, '63 Riviera, '68 Riviera) and 40's ('72 Riviera). But for the past 30 years I have been buying German (BMW, Audi, VW) and Japanese cars (Toyota, Honda), my current car is a 2001 Protegé and I am 72.

As for Buicks, a neighbor took me to the dentist, Tuesday, (because I had to be heavily sedated in advance for oral surgery) in her Buick. What a miserable car that was just to ride in! Wallowed all over the place.

My first car was a 4-cylinder 1939 Willys. Anybody know what Willys eventually became?

Now I'm on the opposite side: I prefer the look of the Accord's rear end and am ambivilant on the front. I really am not fond of the headlight arching into the hood which seems to be the new trend among manufacturers.
  • redkey1redkey1 Member Posts: 270
    I've got a 2002 Sport.
  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
is ambivilant, whatever the hell that means. Just know that the Accord is styled to resemble a small limo, even a Buick limo. Maybe Pepboys will offer aftermarket port holes for it?

I just don't like the way Honda made the Accord Sedan look. The front is ok even thought it looks like a Civic. The back is just bland. To me Honda played it way too safe. Hopefully on the next generation Accord they'll bring back some sportiness to the car. Accord Coupe looks ok though no problem there. I think Honda is trying to get more sales so that means blander styling.

As far as Buick is concerned the Japanese and Eurpoeans weren't big players in the auto industry in the 60's. Totally different time. Nobody in their 20's is going to buy a Buick in 2003. I know Bob Lutz wants to reinvent Buick but that's a challenge in itself. Gm has broght back Cadillac and is now ready to bring Pontiac back up. I think to bring back Buick that is going to be more of a challenge than bringing Pontiac and Cadillac back.
  • gearhead10gearhead10 Member Posts: 84
Still haven't seen many MZ6's on the road and I drive a total of 36 miles in my daily commute on one of the busiest freeways in LA! Actually, I haven't seen many Accord coupes either--about the same number. Uncountable numbers of Accord sedans and Camrys though.
  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
People who all their working lives could never afford more than a Chevy or Ford, promised themselves when they retired they would buy their "dream car", a big sedan with lots of chrome on it. Never mind handling, which they have never experienced, never mind performance since they don't drive over 45mph highway. Afterall, the local cafeteria is as far as they go anyhow. Love those $3.95 vegetable plates.

And Pat_Host, don't say I am stereotyping here, I see these folks every evening when I go to J&S myself. ;)

My husband saw a Sepang Green 6 last evening coming back from Grand Rapids. Woman driving it. No sport package, Illinois plate.

Said he didn't care for the color on this particular car. I have yet to see it in person.

Thanks for the correction about the side air bags in the Protoge5. I reckon if I buy a *new* car the Protoge5 is most likely. Although I don't know if there is enough emotional 'umph' to draw me into paying the depreciation hit of a new car. A 6I MT with Sports and ABS on the other hand... sign me up into financial irresponsibility!

As for safety features, my dealer has also told me that most people aren't terribly interested in them. It appears that in my area Bose was quite possibly the most popular option that people were specifically wanting. He made it sound like he lost a couple of sales because of it...
  • xplorx4xplorx4 Member Posts: 621
First, all- I've been quietly lurking on this forum, while I wait for my wife to get behind the wheel of a 6 (i or s) at a local dealer. We're looking to replace our 93 Accord EX coupe AT. We're not sure what type of vehicle to get, though- we've been looking mostly at wagons, and the only reason I even visited a Mazda dealership was because I heard the 6 wagon is coming in a few months. I wanted to know whether it was worth waiting for the 6 wagon, or to get a Subaru Outback (Limited or 'Bean) before year's end. After driving a loaded 6s, I am nearly wondering whether to get a wagon at all! :)

Anyway, fowler- you bought those Buicks before imports became popular, so I'm not surprised that you were a 30-something Buick owner. Besides, the Buicks of the 60's were pretty hot, and the imports of that era were about as big as sardine cans. Today's auto market is much more diversified, and I can't say that there are many of the younger generation choosing a Buick over sportier alternatives. When your generation passes on, I wonder if Buick will disappear like Oldsmobile is.

PS- here's what your Willys evolved into... :)

seems to be a love/hate type of color. I don't think it would work well at all with the sports package look, but I love the color itself. Took me a while to come around to it, but the more I see it the more I like it. Not sure about the beige interior with the siver center stack, though.

I've been thinking about buying a 6 for about three weeks now and have been amazed at how few I've seen on the road, and I commute on busy roads 1.5 hours a day! I finally saw a black one in a parking lot this morning... looked sharp, but still seems a little small. Hard to believe its rated as a mid-size. It seems about the same size as my '96 Civic.

On the opposite side of the sightings spectrum, I am surprised at how many Altima's I see... probably at least 3 a day! Are they giving these cars away?
  • silvercrownsilvercrown Member Posts: 237
My dealer called me today with a VIN for my MZ6 order. Apparently, someone else placed this order at the end of April, but couldn't wait for it to arrive and bought something else off the lot. The sales manager, changed the specs to reflect the configuration on my order and now I'll be getting the car 2 weeks earlier than with the order that I placed in May. The build date is 6/23, with an ETA of mid-July. I hope that is really the case. I want my car now.

I also have to comment on the Sepang Green discussion. I was all set to get the Lapis Blue until I saw a Sepang Green with beige leather interior and loved the rich, upscale look. so my initial order was for a loaded Sepang 6 with the beige leather and the appearance package. I later changed this to the Sport package, mainly because I wanted the SAB/SAC option, but also because I liked the look of the Sport package and I wanted most of the features that came with it. Plus, I felt that the black interior would look better with the silver dash than the beige did. I wasn't too sure about the 17" wheels and black leather (I'm still preparing myself to adjust to the black leather in the summer) but felt it was a worthwile choice to get all the other features that come with the Sport package.

Having gone with the Sport route and seeing a few Lapis Blue MZ6's on the road, I decided that I would really prefer the blue. It was my first choice color initially (and my overall favorite color) and I felt that it was a "sportier" color that would work better with the Sport Package, sport grille, etc. The more I thought about it, the idea of getting my car in Sepang green faded in appeal. It actually "grew off" me. So I had the dealer change my order to Lapis Blue. After all these iterations and changes, I believe that I am getting the best car for me, color and options. I'm happy with my final decision, although I wish it hadn't taken so much time and energy to get to this point. I still think that the green is a pretty color, but I like the blue better. To each his own, I guess.

A while back, there was some discussion about how people who drive certain brands of cars would not "step down" to Mazda. While a friend of mine just bought a Speed Yellow 6s Sport last week. She lucked out and found what she wanted on the lot. She's coming from a Volvo S40. So much for that theory. Although I'm a bit jealous that she got her car before me, when I've obsessed over the 6 so much longer than she has. LOL That yellow looks awesome too. I liked the color more than I thought I would. It's an excellent color for a car like the 6.

Hopefully, I'll be driving my blue beauty next month. I'm excited and can't wait. Don't let me down, Mazda! Please!! I'm ready to zoom-zoom with the rest of the MZ6 owners. :-)

with the sports package is simply stunning

it's almost like looking at a 'grown up' MP3 :-)

if you want green and sport, there is only but one color: british racing green :-)

    with tan leather of course
