if someone finds out, for sure, if Sepang Green will be around for 2004, please post here. Thanks!

And it may go higher as they open the vehicle up. My recent incident was initially $2900 and it ended up much higher than that.

to get leather seats, I have to buy the sports package which is $710 with or w/o the spoiler. great! ;(

John, I understand your feelings. I like the Mazda 6s and want a moonroof, side airbags and curtains, but not the Sports Package, especially the side sill extensions.

Mazda needs to do some work to simplify their options and packages. I am surprised that they require the Sports Package with things like side airbags and curtains.

does anyone know, has the govt done crash testing for side impacts? is the 6 going to fare well without the side airbags?
  • microrepairmicrorepair Member Posts: 508
    Or lack thereof...

I guess if we all keep complaining about the weird option packaging, MAYBE, just maybe, MazdaUSA might listen and make some changes..

I don't want a moonroof (headroom issue) but I would want the side airbags and curtains. I don't want the sport package either, maybe I'd get the appearance package, maybe not. Leather/cloth seats is a tossup. I might go for the after market leather if I can find a really good shop here in eastern Mass. that will do the leather for a good price.. And I hope the Sepang green is available for the 2004 models, if not my interest is beginning to fade somewhat. I suppose I could live with the blue or the charcoal silver (or whatever the darker silver is called?)...

MUSA, please separate the moonroof, side airbags, and sport package...

Has anyone else noticed that the price/options link that twillia posted says 4-door minivan at the very top?????

I want the Bose audio available w/o the sport pkg!
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
    I need to take:
    bose audio
    sports package
    Side airbags + curtains

    ????
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
the Sports package will not have the 0% finance, nor the rebates. I assume.

    Re: Standard Trim

17" Alloys (already standard on all Canadian models BUT the "base" I4 GS model (6i))
ABS w/EBFD (already standard in Canada)
Fog lights mounted in the lower 2 extremities of the bumper instead of beign housed in the headlamps
Leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter and parking brake
A/C and power windows+locks goes without saying

    Re: Options

    Safety Package: SAC/SAB
Stand-alone Options: Moonroof, rear spoiler (raised or lip), leather
Sport Package: Front+Rear+Side skirts (remember the spoiler is a stand-alone option)
    I Can't Read a Map Package: NAV+HIDs

This should satisfy all buyers and will differentiate the M6 from the Accord and Camry (that still offer 15" steel wheels IIRC).

Are available on the japanese testing webpage:

    http://www.osa.go.jp/anzen/html2003e/15.html

They've done what's similar to the U.S. NHTSA front and side collision tests and IIHS offset collision tests. Very good results compared to others in its class. I got side curtains in mine as an added insurance. I really hope the 2004's will have this option without all the extra stuff people don't want.

Seems not very intuitive to require the i model to have sports package just to get the safety features. My impression is that those who want the sporty look usually don't care much about safety (sports cars do not have much safety emphasis as a typical family sedan)

When the new MPV comes out for the 06 model year is production moving from Japan to Flat Rock because the 6 platform is in Flat Rock?

The Mustang should not be based on the 6 platform. I don't like that idea.

About the Sepang Green if Mazda thought it wasn't selling well they have to take that color combo out of the 6 right away. I guess Mazda doesn't want Sepang Green 6's on lots for a long period of time because the longer they are on lots Mazda has to keep on paying interests on those cars.

chikoo: I'll be surprised if even the normal trim will have incentives when the car is first released. However, at least the sports package will be more common, so dealers should be willing to negotiate!

Personally, I don't like how they took the electroluminescent gauges and 17" alloys (on 6I) out of the sport package. So instead of paying $710 for the Sport Package on the 6I, we really are paying $1260, since the 17" wheels aren't optional. But I DO like how they bundled Side Air Bags and ABS & TCS in a package that is about the same price as the two options combined in the 2003 model. They also made the security package available in several different combos, a great thing for me.

It's interesting to note that it is MUCH easier to get side air curtains on the 6I than the 6S. Maybe they figure that people paying the extra money for a 6cyl engine aren’t really on as tight a budget (and therefore won’t be as picky about paying for a moonroof to get SAB/SAC), whereas the 6I buyer is more likely to be concerned about paying extra for options they don’t really want just so they can be protected.

    dinu01:

I nominate you for the new National Mazda Marketing Directorship...!! That is a packaging lineup that makes sense.

(I had forgotten about the fog lights and applaud your idea of them being mounted LOW where they belong..!!)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
    Got any connections? :)

If this is how the packages would be offered, I doubt people here will be complaining about them.

    Other comments:

    1. Differentiate the M6 from the run of the mill competition by having not only better styling and driving dynamics but also great option packages. Maybe help get new sales from ppl that are attracted to these packages more than what other manufacturers offer in their cars - hence get Mazda more sales = more $$$ = more cool/exciting cars.
    3. Keep the prices to an affordable level, but offer better financing than H/T/N.
    4. When advertising, do 2 things:

    a) List ALL the awards the car won in the US/Canada ***AND*** overseas!!!
    b) Compare it to the Camry/Accord/Altima w/out shame - ppl NEED to know the M6 exists and does the A->B as good as anyone else while also providing some FUN and STYLE.

I don't think the mustang is one of the 10 cars using the MZ6 platform
  • mazdamarlamazdamarla Member Posts: 350
Well, I got the sport package, AND the SAB/SCAs were a must-have for me. No matter what new car I got, I decided that it HAD to have side airbags at the very least. Too many people in my neck of the woods seem to like blowing stop signs and red lights. Good investment as far as I'm concerned. You wouldn't believe how many fatal ignoring-stop-sign accidents we've had just this year alone.

Re: (I had forgotten about the fog lights and applaud your idea of them being mounted LOW where they belong..!!)

Do you have the fog lights on your M6s? I do.. and they rock! I've tried them in foggy and raining conditions. They're very helpful and illuminate the road very well. Would they work any better mounted lower in the grill? I doubt it, truly. Plus, have you not noticed how many fog lights mounted that low are broken, scratched or not working? I have... The lower, the more chance of hitting something, or having something pop up and crack them. I think Mazda's design of including them with the regular light assembly works well.

    Just my opinion...
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i agree with you. the lower fog lights are prone to breakage, and they look very "aftermarket" usually. not such a good thing on such a pretty car :)
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
... finding out about possible add-on hardware, and/or kits to activate the dummy foglights on my non-Sport 6. That would rock!

There's an active discussion about it "elsewhere"

I have SAB/SCA on my 03 6s without a moon roof or the sport packedge. Looks like I could have a unique vehicle given the 04 changes.

    Mark : )
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I'd like to see them separate from the main lights - this is only for looks (for me at least), not functionality.

  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
The fog lights mounted in the bumper are for the non-Sports Package cars. It isn't a matter of choice.

I was watching "Rides" tonight on The Learning Channel, they showed several hot rod cars including a 2002 Thunderbird they were customizing. The designer is fantastic -- he designed new alloy wheels for the T-bird, and they showed how alloys are made. If you don't like the alloys offered on the MZ6 this is an alternate. Custom made alloys cost $5000 EACH! Thought you would like to know, Dinu01. ;)

When they paint a car -- they paint everything -- including what can not be seen. The finishes are jaw-dropping.

  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I was watching that last nite too! Do they haev Rides every Wednesday now?

The T-Bird looked MUCH better - clean lines, the frameless windshield was neat too!

As far as fog lights go, I think they should be standard and mounted in the bumper - the bumper looks like it's missing something w/out them.

Hmm, could you be more specific as to what we're looking for in those photos? I noticed the V6 badge, a 2004 model or someone put a V6 emblem on there? I also noticed the left side of the tailights being darker, but that may be the photo quality.
  • seafseaf Member Posts: 339
They are one of the major reasons why I got a Mazda6 instead of an Accord, it's available without loading up the car with gadgets and features that I'll never use, and pay $2k more. Too bad this won't be an option in the 2004 models. Mazda needs to stand out as much as possible from the crowd rather than being just like all the other manufacturers.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Mazda just can't seem to help itself. They seem to ALWAYS come up with bizarre required combinations that of course cost big money in order to get safety equipment that either should be standard or available as a stand alone option.

    Why?
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
u are looking for the V6 emblem, which comes on the doors from the factory. Mine did not come, so the dealer gave a pair. Well I used only one and put them in the rear. That is the side of my car which most people are going to be looking anyway.

i knew what the incentives/rebates are going to be AFTER 9/2...

hate to buy a 6 now, and next week find out that the rebate increased to 2 grand. some of mazda's cars have 2500 and 2750 rebates right now.....
  • cubfan2cubfan2 Member Posts: 18
I was told the incentives would end by 7/31 so I eagerly bought (Highly recommend you avoid Test Driving until you're ready to buy - - very fun to drive).

I'd say in the long run, $500 isn't going to break the bank over a long term so buy when you want to begin enjoying this car. What are the incentives these days anyway?
  • joe2617joe2617 Member Posts: 88
There are no 2003 Mazda6s left at the factory and dealer inventories are running low so don't expect any changes in the incentives on the Mazda6. If anything Mazda will increase the rebate on the Protege5.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
and about waiting. how many stick shifts are available? I am sure that well must have run dry.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
looking at this numbers in and around 50 miles of my zip code

    MZ6s - v6 - 5MT - gray leather - 10 available

    compare that to

    MZ6s - v6 - 5MT -black leather - 36 available

more sport packages than regular. Guess which ones will get the rebates now?

When I was ready to buy back in late May I think, my local dealer was adament about getting MSRP for the 5 spd V6 SP car I wanted, well, guess what? the same car is still sitting on his lot today, I wanna go and laugh in his face for not accepting my offer which was IMO very reasonable at $1k off MSRP.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
when i test drove and was inspecting the 6s, i noticed the sun visors hang down. it caught my eye cause they didn't seem "tight", but went on the next part of the car. in another forum here on Edmunds, someone mentions that the visors are hanging down worse? is there a TSB for this? easy fix?

is the headliner one sturdy fabric coated piece like in VW, or is it fabric that is glued/stapled to the roof?

    thanks.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
I don't have any visor problems.

the headliner is a coated one.
  • seafseaf Member Posts: 339
I noticed that my right projector headlight's cutoff line is slightly higher than my left (when pulling into my garage at night). I could easily adjust it via the adjustment screw behind the light assembly, but don't know if it's due to a misalignment, or is it supposed to be this way in the U.S where we drive on the right side and the right light is supposed to light up the signs better?

I also don't have any visor problems.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
    same here.

the left headlight beam is lower than the right. I figured it is so to prevent glare into the incoming drivers eyes.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
But on the Protege. Works well IMO.

Most left-side headlamps cut off lower. Both my Pro LX and my wife's P5 exhibit the same pattern.

I'll have to check that channel's schedule about Rides. Good show, loved Chris Roos' designs since I am a designer. He works fast! Also loved how they covered the engine on the 1937 Chevy. Doubt that can be easily done with today's engines, cables, and tubing all over the place.

I'm going to take photos of the four rear bumper treatments this weekend and will find a place to post them for a link. Also, will get shots of the RX-8, the dealer has a gorgeous bright silver one with black leather trim and two red ones. One of the red ones has extra trim that screws up the RX-8's design -- silver triangle trim pieces under the grille and under the rear facia.

Mazda's problem is they design beautiful cars and can't leave it at that, they have to add unnecessary crap and screw them up. Same thing happens to amateur artists, they don't know when to stop painting and ruin their work -- quality art is done by those who know when to stop.

While you dream about your next car, drive safely this holiday weekend and we'll see you here Tuesday. For those not traveling, it would be a good time to test drive a Mazda6 for the fun of it.

Saw them on their way to Perry Mazda in Santa Barbara on the freeway. All of them had the sport package BUT with the 16 inch wheels. There was also a Sepang green one in the lot. Packaging is the only difference between the two model years. Seeing sport packages without the 17s looked kinda wierd, not bad just different.

My Mazda 6s manual specifies 5W20 oil for the car. Anyone knows if 5W20 is synthetic ? Can I use regular 5W30 oil in my Mazda Duratec V6 engine ? Please give me your advice.

with regards to timing of the purchase...I actually think about getting MZ6s, 5spd tomorrow...but if they include sport pckg into incentives starting on Tuesday, why not wait? I almost feel I should make my tomorrow's buy on the condition of possible adjustment...haha.
I do see more sport pckgs sitting in inventory at this point (within 50m they have 14 black, 4 gray, 3 beige)...tough, don't want to come out to be a sucker at the end.
BTW it is nice to see this board growing, only last year in September (I think) when I posted my experiences of driving 2.0L MZ6 in France, it only had few followers...now we have full blown discussion topics...keep it going and soon we shall have annual MEM (read Mazda Enthusiasts Meeting...haha)
