does your Mazda franchise share a showroom with any other line?

Test drove the 5pd w/comfort,sport,premium over the weekend and was quite impressed. The dealer went with me on the test drive so I couldn't get as comfortable I would of liked with the car.

Anyways my only gripe with the car is the leather. The biggest thing i noticed was that the car didn't have that leather smell I was expecting. And the quality of the leather didn't seem all that good. And why did they go with the perforated leather. leather w/o holes looks so much better.

My gf and I are kinda cross-shopping this segment. One reason she won't even look at the TL though is b/c it's only available in an automatic.

The 6 isn't really in b/c, well, it's not even available up here yet...but since we are a long way off from actually purchasing anything, I'll make sure we look at the 6 when it comes out.

I'm the Internet Manager at a Mazda Dealer.--Don't worry, I'm not here to sell anything, okay?

I'm really glad to see this board on Edmunds. We've seen a lot of people cross-shopping many vehicles; namely, the accord.

I wanted to tell you that we are not expecting the 5 door version for about 10 months to a year. We've got some really great pictures at our dealership of the 5 door; I can't tell which one I like the best. The pictures were taken at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas. I don't have a scanner, sorry!

Regarding Traction Control, the best way to describe it, is that it prevents your wheels from spinning, if you are stuck on ice or snow. However, since the 6 is front wheel drive, TC is sometimes not needed.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
I'm guessing he was looking for more detailed insight on the TC operation.

our mazda franchise is shared with Lincoln-Mercury. Our other franchises, including acura and ford at about 30 minutes away. We are next door to a toyota franchise and less than .5 mile from hyundai, Kia, mitsubishi, honda, caddy, chevy, pontiac, dodge, chrysler and the brand formally known as daewoo.

    Details on TC:

    Electronic traction control senses excessive wheel spin and then varies the engine power to the driving wheels to regain traction;

    1. Using the wheel-speed sensors of the ABS system, the TC system can detect wheel spin at the driving wheels and determine cornering forces.

    2. Once the system detects wheel spin, the control module system signals the engine to reduce torque.

    3. By reducing the torque, wheel spin stops and the tires are then able to regain their grip, maintaining vehicle control.

**What the ABS system does for deceleration, the TC system does for acceleration. While one system detects wheel lock-up, the other detects wheel spin. Both systems use the same hardware to detect wheel-speed differential, and both use the SAME basic principles relating to tire slip ratio.

I hope that was detailed enough.

I found these accolades for the new Mazda6 in its home market and other points abroad.

In Japan, the Mazda6 rec'd the RJC 2003 Car of the Year (COTY) award. The RJC is a membership comprised of auto journalists, leading academics, lawyers, etc. It won out of a field of 23 cars.

Australia: Won Best Midsized over $25k (Aussie $)

    Scotland and Austria: 2003 COTY

Other European awards: 2003 Runner-up for COTY Europe. It lost out to the Renault Megane.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Mazda is onto something w/the Mazda6! This WRX owner has taken notice and likes what he sees. :-)

Ideally, you'd want the wheel with spin to have its torque reduced by wheel braking while letting the wheel with traction do its job or a differential that can split torque. I guess this system is no different than others we have seen in previous Mazdas.

    Sarah, great explanation!

I have no idea why they used perforated leather seats, unless, it is to aid set heating, available with the comfort package.

The reason there is no leather odor, most of the seats are covered with matching vinyl: Sides, backs, and bolsters are vinyl. Seat cushions and back rests are leather. This is true in many cars. Read the fine print.

Correct me, Maltb, if I am mistaken.

is actually the conditioner they use when tanning it. I'm sure somebody makes a leather scent similar to that new car smell crap.
  • bme_cvbme_cv Member Posts: 8
I got the idea from dealer. In fact, I don't like leather smell, so I'm glad that the leather seat in Mazda 6 smell nice and does not make me sick.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Seeing as how I hate that stench and my wife's new P5 has leather. A car with really stinky leather will drive me out of it really quickly.

I like perforated leather better than solid myself. It breathes better. Of course, that also means my sweat goes through it better into the padding. Oh well. :)

Is the heat adjustable, and are they independant of the HVAC system and of each other? (ala VW's)

    Thanks.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I don't think the heat is adjustable. I prefer adjustable, but that's the only kind I have ever had.

That's the most important one anyways, lol.

When will we see Navigation as an option?
    Is it DVD?
  • riopelleriopelle Member Posts: 132
Yeah, the only thing I miss from my VW is the heated seats! (okay, the 1.8T and switchblade key fob, too)

I looked for the heated seat controls while in the 6, but it seems they are part of the HVAC digital controls. Nothing beats a heated seat for a bad back, i used to use it 11 months a year. Hope they have them in the 3 when it comes out.

Perhaps Audi8Q or another salesperson has the answer?
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
will come on the RX-8 first; possibly an option for the '04 Mazda6.

They tell me the dvd navigation arrives next year. The audi screen name comes from my former life with Porsche-Audi.

ROIPELLE...the heated seat switch is on the base of the center console..same place as the Millenia.

Does anyone have information on the Wagon?

Fall 04, or the same as the 5D?

    Mark.

I will look again in the brochure, and at my next stop at the dealer.

I called Fitzgerald Auto Mall. They said their online price was a typo, but they'd honor it today. Sounds only like a way to get me to come in. They even have a V6 manual w/ sport, no moonroof!

For those two lazy to scroll up a few posts, it is a no-haggle place selling the 6 for $500 over invoice.

Audia8q, how has the reception of the Mazda6 been by your customers? (if you don't mind me asking...) Nice to have you back on the board, again.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
    but they'd honor it today.

That's right folks for one day only you can get the Ronco6 for the amazing low price of $XXXXX in 60 easy payments of $XXX!

How many ginsu knives come with it?

There's an interior photo of the Mazda6 on this web site. I wondered what the controls were on the console to the left of the MT.

Test drove a 6s manual last weekend. The heated seats are controlled by on / off switches just below center console arm rest (one for each seat). They didn't seem to be regulated just on / off.

By the way the manual seemed much quicker than the 6s auto I drove a couple weeks ago.

Checked lease rates at leasecompare.com, the 6s with manual was slightly higher (monthly payment) than a same equipped auto - I guess the manual even though less expensive to buy residualizes much less than the auto.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
Yeah the 6 was on the page right after the Accord.

C'mon I had to say it. My tail is starting to partially undo itself from between my legs. Saw the Accord interior again. Decisions, decisions.

And delivers another grumpy old man's report of the Mazda6: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/usatoday/20021206/en_usatoday/4680479

I think USA today would be better served with Jim Fowler doing their reviews. Anybody with me on that one?

  • boxfanboxfan Member Posts: 180
The web sites for Car and Driver, Autoweek, and Motor Trend all have Mazda 6 ads today, either on the home page or as pop-ups. I'd say that's smart targeted advertising.

I was amused by the web ads they had a month or two ago for the 6 that said "220 HP, no waiting." Considering that the car wasn't out yet, the "no waiting" part didn't make much sense. And the 220 HP part didn't make sense since some of the competition has a higher number (for those people who pick a car based on one number), and I thought Mazda wasn't competing in the horsepower wars anyway.
  • capitanocapitano Member Posts: 509
I think it was OK. Not glowing like the enthusiast press of course, but probably more attuned to the USA Today audience.

He does seem to be one of those who greatly prefer RWD cars. His comments imply that it is simply an inferior arrangement. I wonder if he adds them to all his FWD reviews.

I still don't get the sport package cladding thing. To me it is hardly noticeable except for the spoiler.

I was surprised to see his comments about the manual tranny. First I have seen of anything negative about it.

Since I have never owned a Mazda, I don't have my own little irrational feeling about Mazda reliability. However, I discount his use of JD Power since I never see their results match up to CR and to me CRs assessments are the ones to go by.
  • mkcomkco Member Posts: 65
I haven't read his Mazda 6 review yet, but I think he is the most honest, tell-it-like-it-is reviewer out there. He's the only one willing to out-and-out slam a brand-new model, if he thinks that's warranted.

My only complaint about him is too many SUV's, not enough cars for me. But I guess that's what a lot of the readers of USA Today are interested in. Not me!
  • boxfanboxfan Member Posts: 180
I totally agree with you, CR's assessment of reliability is the only thing to look at. The Protege, MPV and even 626 all do pretty respectably in their rankings, so I think that reviewer's slam on the Mazda brand should be completely ignored.

His comment about the notchy transmission was hinted at in one or two reviews. It just seems like this guy amplifies every quibble he can come up with. He still said lots of positive things about the car.
  • sunilbsunilb Member Posts: 407
So, for the people who have driven the manual (i or s)... what were your impressions of the shifter? Good, bad, indifferent?
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Is that he cannot accept something as good without trying to detract from it. Even his comment about Toyota and Honda reliability had a hidden blow. However, every time he reviews Mazda products he likes put some extra little slam in there. Having talked to a former PR guy for Mazda who has dealt with him, I understand that he his is real PITA to get along with in general.

    I especially love the conclusion:

"Bottom line: If you're in the market for a sports sedan and you think you're nearly as big an automotive enthusiast as we are, stop by the Mazda store and ask to try on something in size 6."

Just had to chime in here. Me and a friend both test drove a 6s 5speed. We were both SHOCKED at how smooth and fluid the shifting was.... "honda like" is how we compared it. Smoother than my P5 - which I think is great, btw.
  • choppermakerchoppermaker Member Posts: 31
I've driven a 6s manual transmission. After the first test drive (which was too short) I really wasn't comfortable with the shifter. It felt very notchy, and it seemed like it was mounted too close to me, so that my shoulder was pushed back into the seat while gripping the stick in an even gear (2 or 4). It seemed a shame, since the clutch feel was wonderful.

I probably would have already ordered my 6s manual, but after that (short) experience, I'm waiting until I have an opportunity to drive a different car in the same configuration. Hopefully, I'll like it more the 2nd time around.

All in all, Healey's comments about the shifter certainly agreed with what I felt.
  • markjennmarkjenn Member Posts: 1,142
Good post (a ways back). Fair enough.

And since there are many one-price dealers, and since nearly anyone can go through Costco, credit union, carsdirect.com, or similar buying service and get a reasonable, fixed price, then the market has filled the need for people who don't have the savy or interest in negotiation.

If an individual ignores all this and walks in and gets "taken" by an unscrupulous dealer, well the system needs a little natural selection too.

We shouldn't burden all buyers with protecting the 1% who are too lazy not to put a tiny bit of thought to the car buying process. And even those that are "taken" are only paying about 5%or perhaps 10% over market. It's not like car dealers are raiding people's IRAs or something. (We have the investment sales community to do that - talk about shaddy sales practices!(

Just don't make such one-price schemes mandatory by regulation.

your remark about "the shifter is too close" is interesting. That's exactly what I feel when I test drove the Protege5 18 months ago: my elbow somehow keeps touching the side of the backseat. Though it doesn't prevent me to buy the car. It's amazing how one get use to it. After a month or so, my gesture get adapted and it doesn't bother me at all. BTW, I'm 5'5". I prefer the shifter of the P5 to the 97 Civic ES's: very accurate and quick accept the second gear is a tad slow to be engaged at high RPM.
  • choppermakerchoppermaker Member Posts: 31
I'm 6'1", but obviously the problem is the same, because the seat moves. I'm sure I'd get used to the position. It just has a noticeably different feel than my A4's stick movement and position, which is very smooth, but a little rubbery (not much mechanical feel to it). I've never driven another Mazda before, so I can't compare with any previous models.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    WOW!!! How tall ARE YOU???

    ;-)

(I'm pretty sure you meant "seatback," but I just couldn't leave that one alone.)
