That Auto-HVAC system works similar to the system in the Trooper/Axiom.

LX also comes with TOD-AWD which is even helpful in So-cal because AWD is useful not only in rain/snow but in the dry as well.

In addition to my post #924, Kia also responded (when U.S. cars travel outside the country and need warranty repair, roadside assistant, etc) all circumstances will taken into consideration whey they look over the reimbursements receipts when you are unable to get to the authorized Kia dealers. How about that? It is very interesting to hear the guy about the AAA. I have AAA and used several times from tire change, towing and locked key. I even reimbursed when I called someone (not via AAA dispatcher) to tow.

This site has some pics of showcars from Korean manufactures. Hyundai is showing off this black SUV with ugly front which I think may become next car based Sportage and another Hyundai SUV. IMO, the white and blue Hyundai sports car looks hot. Kia will also introduce a "sporty upscale sedan" based on Hyundai's XG350. KIA is really expanding fast.

That looks like a future Santa Fe. BTW, is Daewoo still making cars? They seem to disappeared in US, at least in metro Boston, MA.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I did a little research on resale value for Kia Sedona and Hyundai Santa Fe. There is about $5K to $6K depreciation for both one-year-old vehicles. That's pretty much the same thing on 2002 Honda CR-V. I also looked at the problem board for Hyundai and Kia, Sedona has less problem than Santa Fe. I hope Sorento will do much better.

Ok we've had our Sorento w/ABS and Luxury package for 4 days now. I went over the the car checking for fit and finish and I have to hand it to KIA for taking there time to make sure that the finish is great. The seams and the panels are real good the paint is almost none orange peel and the metal flake in the paint is outstanding. The ride is what is to be expected for a body on frame but the suspension does soak up the nois. We opted for the 10 yr bumper to bumper as well for about 900 (dealer was asking 1300)and this includes free oil and filter change for as long as I own the Sorento even going over the 10 yrs. Though I still like to do much of my own work I still will get under the hood and underside to see what makes this car tick. I tend to be anal in taing care of my cars. Maybe we out to start a care and cleaning section as well as a maintence section so that we can discuss cleaners, waxes and any tricks in maintaning the Sorento. Again the seats we found to be wide and deep and the power seat is really nice considering we are 5 ft tall.

re post 941 for schip1... The mud flaps are a Kia accesory made for the Sorento, as well as the bug deflector and window vents. The wind noise is on the driver side and I think its from the seal around the door because it may happen one time and after shuting the door again it goes away, something to have check out next time in for service. We also here a slight jingle from the back area could be lose spare or seat belt rattling around. We sat in the car yesterday and made all the settings to the radio and compass, tried the CD player and love it. Took it to a car wash (no brushes) and we went through the blower and found no leaks ( concerned with the sunroof). The things we found that could have been added would be a type of strap on the visors say to hold mail or a handicap placard, and the cup holders in the front are not made to hold cups with loop handles that join to the body of the cup so you can't get two in at the same time. though it beats the placement of where it was in our Forester. Right in front of a A/C dash opening. Ice coffee when you don't want it. The magnet that holds the upper center console door must be made from byrilium. Its very hard to open with on hand.
Thats all for now back to work. I'll add more as we drive on.

Carspy - someone (a dealer if I recall) even said that Kia used a Cray computer to model the Sorento's crash worthiness and that is why they are so confident Sorento will get 5 star in at least 4 of the 5 categories. Alot of press reports are also stating these "expected" ratings.

And here at lunch I just opened the November 2002 Popular Mechanics mag and see a huge glossy ad insert for the Kia line-up, featuring, of course, the mighty Sorento. Nice to see they are investing in major ad campaigns, incl. their TV spots.

(Actually, I KNOW the Sorento is serious stuff in Canada now - Kia Canada has ads running on "Hockey Night in Canada" on TV. Used to be you only ever saw Ford sponsoring hockey here - so Kia's playing with the big boys now....again, nice to see ...)

Is this necessary? It has 5yr/50000 miles basic warranty. It covers anything except oil change, normal tears & wears and other scheduled maintenance. I looked at the edmunds about pre-paid maintenance. It has some good info about this.

Yoonny, your link did NOT work when I tried it several times, but please allow a few comments:
Hyundai is showing - apart from the "normal" international product line - following show cars:
    1) Tuscani Aero (a sportier Tiburon/Coupe-version)
    2) Santa Fe Mountaineer (That's the black Santa Fe you saw. Big A** front grille, vertical HID-headlights, blinkers in outside mirrors, complete different back. Looks are really different. I doubt that we will see this version here.)
    3) Starex Limousine (a travel version of the Starex microbus)
    4) Click Character Car (funky version of Clix/Click minicar)
    5) Verna Rally Car (= Accent Rally Car)

The concept cars are the HIC sports car and the known HCD-7 concept.

Kia is showing - among others - the Carens-based wagon concept KCV-I (some called it KVC-I), and the known KCV-II from the German Kia design center, as well as the concept of the GH (future Opirus), based on the XG350.

Didn't you read the rest? Got rid of the 300M and bought a black Avalanche Z66 back in March. It's virtually flawless and we love it!

As far as the Sorento goes, I really, really like them myself. The styling, features, price, and performance are all terrific, and I'm a huge fan of my aunt's 02' Sedona EX that I rode in and detailed back in August. It too was very, very tight, and had one of the quietest engines and ride of any vehicle I've been in. Also, a silent, motionless idle, and a great sound when flooring it a little. That same engine also makes the Sorento even nicer in my eyes. Too bad it's more than I could afford anytime soon, I'd probably get a black 2wd EX (or LX).

So, after I looked at the Sorento and fell in love with it, I started having some second thoughts. Mostly about reliability issues and the so-called "KIA stigma" , but the more I keep reading about it, the better I feel about it. I even went to look at the Liberty and Xterra. They don't even come close to the styling of the Kia, and only Nissan has really proven themselves to me.( I owned a Sentra and currently own an Infinity G20) But after thinking it through... I cant wait to get a Sorento! Glad to hear of the expected crash ratings. Still havent seen one on the road yet. It'll be nice to see one out and about.

Surfmaster: You are right. As I posted before in reply to a question from iluvmysephia, most if not all current manufacturers use Cray computers (not only for crash simulations). If they do not have their own, they "buy" design time.
Well, back to the issue, the official announcement from Kia Motor in Korea earlier this year mentioned the crash tests they conducted according to US NHTSA and European standards. And you are correct, they mentioned the "expected 5 star ratings front and side impacts".
I just wanted to point out that, so far, there were no "official" NHTSA or IIHS tests, and I wanted to give everyone a timeline. The Sorento was not yet "officially" crashed in Europe either, but I will let you know.
Based on the excellent results and experience of the Sedona minivan, however, and considering the standard side curtain airbags, I'd expect no less than 5 stars in any category for the Sorento!!!!!!!
  • jrdowneyjrdowney Member Posts: 96
A drop of $5-6K in the first year is pretty substantial for a $25K vehicle. The numbers I've seen suggest a residual of 25% after 4 years. How about this as an option. Buy a 3-year old Lexus RX300 for about the same price as a new Kia. Which will be worth more three years later? This is the way I'm leaning so give me some compelling arguements for the Kia as a new vehicle with no history.

#951, mikesf: Holy moly! ....100 mph!! No way can we do that in California without getting nailed right away! Good to know that the Sorento can cruise at that speed without any problems :) The nerve of some people knocking on your car when you're not around!

#959, hciaffa: thanks for the info about the mud flaps. I think I need to get the hood deflector PRONTO! Washing the car this weekend, I noticed a few dings on the hood already :( When you took your Sorento through the car wash, I assume you were able to unscrew the antenna? I can't find the right size wrench yet. I also noticed an occasional jingle coming from the back. I think it's caused by the cargo net. Did you notice there's an elastic strap in the glove compartment? Funny that you should mention how strong the magnet is for the upper door of the center console. Ours is that way also. The 12V cover under the cigarette lighter is also way too tight. I think it'll loosen with use.

#962, carspy01: Yoonny's link worked for me. Maybe the site was down when you tried it?? Thanks for all the good info you're constantly providing us, carspy01 !!

#964, jsal74: I'm not concern about any 'KIA-stigma', 'cause the way I figure it, I'm the 'smart' one, being an early adopter and saving all this money....just like the commercial says! I've only seen ONE other Sorento on the road thus far. I was pulling up from behind, got into the next lane and wanted to honk and wave, but the light changed and we had to turn :( Until I saw this other Sorento, I didn't realize how different it looks from the back (vs. the RX300) and how attractive the starburst taillights are!

#966: give you compelling arguments?? Nahhhh.....go ahead and buy a 3-year old status symbol. Don't forget, 3 years from now, your snotty fellow Lexus owners will be wondering why you're driving a 6 year old car and can't afford to buy a new 2006 Lexus.

OK....back to work so I can leave soon and catch the 49'ers on MNF !!

My wife and I bought an EX 4x4 last Friday night. So far, we love the car and have been getting alot of stares! Getting ready to go on our first road trip over the holidays and will post on it's performance. The major thing I'm thrilled with is...my insurance only went up $2.00 for six months. I traded in a stripped Toyota Tacoma 1999. Could this be the side curtain airbags which make the difference? Anyway, I'm new to the board and look forward to reading everyone's posts. It's been very helpful to read everyones input and helped me make the decision.
  • jsal74jsal74 Member Posts: 6
i was browsing around the edmunds site and came across this on a safety page:

"We can't conclude this article without mentioning a mini-debate among our editorial staffers concerning side-impact airbags. Our editor-in-chief is dead-set against installing them in the rear, citing their danger to children and small-stature adults."

Is this what the sorento has? Or are curtains different from side impact airbags?

Just wondering since I have a 2 year old and a baby due in Jan.
    -J

Ps... priced a 3 year old Lexus RX300... nothing under $27,000, and why would I give up that *great* new car smell?
  • jsal74jsal74 Member Posts: 6
How much did you pay? Just wondering...

A coworker with a $45k MDX said he liked the looks of my silver/gray Sorento better then his silver/gray Acura (maybe a little Sorento envy). From the side they look very similar. His kids are already through college, I've got one starting next Sept.

Just bought an Indigo blue LX on Wednesday. I have two small kids and looking for a rubber floor mat to cover the back floor (seats). Anyone know of a brand that I can get?? Tried Walmart and it was a 2 pc unit, would like a 1 pc.

by the way Love the truck

#970: jsal74, there's a picture of inflated side curtain airbags in the Sorento brochure. This is what the owner's manual has to say about them: "This side curtain airbag system consists of inflatable curtains located along both sides of the roof rail, stretching from the rear edge of the rear side door windows to center of both front side windows. It is designed to help protect the heads of the front seat occupants and the rear outboard seat occupants in certain side impact collisions."

It doesn't say anything specifically about children and side airbags, except "Only adults should sit in the front seats. Children must never be allowed in the front passenger seat." There's also a caution about passengers need to sit in an upright position, with seat belts properly fastened, in order for the side airbags to deploy properly.

Thanks for the pricing info on a 3-year old RX300. Good observation regarding the new car smell. Even if we had not already purchased our Sorento, to me, it would be a no-brainer in choosing between: 1) a more expensive 3-year old car, with no warranty and no history, that someone else NO LONGER WANTED, versus 2) a less expensive brand new car, protected by a 10-year warranty and lemon laws, that will turn heads, and have that new car smell. I suppose the upside of buying a used RX300 is that it would already be dinged and scratched, so I wouldn't have park in the most remote spot at the mall :)

#960 - surfmaster: additionally, Andre Aggasi is suppose to launch a new advertising campaign staring in November. See Post #1551, in "Your Thoughts About KIA" forum.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Don't count on it. If you are the type that "cycles" through cars every 3 years this is not the car for you. However if you want a car that will likely last 7-10 years @ average miles per year, then you found it...

  • surfmastersurfmaster Member Posts: 11
wsswesty - yes, the insurance surprised me up here in Canada too. I had my company price out a Sorento against an Escape, and lo and behold, the ESCAPE was 40 bucks more per 6 months!! Maybe should have compared a Sorento against a Pathfinder or other foreign mid-SUV, but still, big surprise. I asked why it was less, esp. with that New Year Model thing I always wonder about, and the insurance lady said, well, it may change over time (2 years or so) if they find it has higher than average repair costs, but that will affect premiums for later model years, not this one!. And they have already factored the KIA name into the quote I've got, so that's not going to change. Nice surprise, again.......
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
schip1... I didn't notice any elastic bands in the glove box. I will have to check it out tonight.
Wsswesty ...Same here on the insurance. My insurance company qouted me only a 10 increase for six months over the 99 Forester that we dropped and its so new that they really didn't have any rates to give out yet. It took this rep about 4 days to get back to us.
jsal74... as schip1 mentioned they are ment to protect the head and shoulder areas of the out board passenger and front occupants. Side air bags help out for the lower areas of the body I know my daughter has them in her Hyundia and they helped her to avoid some serious injuries when she got broadsided. Again the insurance company feelings from what my rep explained are that the curtains help better in head injury prevention which is prefered though anything is better than nothing.
calmen...i have done some research and there really is no accessories out yet like any front or rear rubber floor mats as I would be interested as well. I may go down to Walmarts or Pep Boys with the measurements of the mats and compare and buy what ever is close and trim and cut them for now.
We are really enjoying our 'arrrgh', I mean my wife's Sorento. Tonight We are invited to a little open house at our Kia dealer for a question and answer and get to know you service group. Should be interesting.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
hciaffa - Have you able to locate the spare tire and figure out how to put to old tire back? The salesman showed me by using a metal bar. But he never showed me how to put the tire back. It looks difficult, also for those spare tire mounted under the car.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
From everything I've read here on Edmunds, it sure looks like the Sorento has the Trailblazer (should be TRIALblazer) beat by 1000 to 1!

    Good job, Kia!
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I forgot if I asked this here before or not, but hopefully the answer is "Yes!".

Is there a front bench seat standard or optional on the Sorento?

    Thanks.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Is that the only way to get the TOD?

    Thanks.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
"... All I want in a car is ABS and AWD."

You should check out Subarus also then.

Myself? I prefer no ABS, or at least an ABS defeat switch (or pull the fuse!).

I don't particularly care for all the "luxury" doodahs, but TOD sure sounds like something I'd want. Leather and sunroof are nice, but not mandatory for me.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
No bench seat in the front. Not even an option. T.O.D. is a part of luxury package, also comes with leather seats, 6-in-dash CD, climate control and auto headlights.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538

Better yet, buy a 1 year old Kia Sorento NEXT YEAR!
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I think you can't get just the T.O.D. The EX (both 2WD and 4WD) comes with standard sunroof. $22K for 4x2 and $24K for 4x4.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Have a baby due in June.

Have a Wrangler. (It doesn't have SIDES, let alone side airbags!)
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
The MDX and Sorento are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT vehicles from everything I've read so far.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I am sure they know these vehicles are different. They mentioned MDX, RX300 or ML320 only because they look similar in size & shape. Test drive one (Sorento) to see if this is the car that you like.

Hi everybody. This is my first post and I wanted to start off by thanking everyone who've been posting their insights and opinions the last 30 days or so. My fiance had been considering a 2-3year old Lexus RX300 but after I showed her the big ad spreads in Popular Mechanics last month we checked out the Sorento at Lokey KIA in Clearwater, FL. Then I found this site and after much online research, and the good info right here she decided to get the KIA. The hard part was finding the Indigo Blue/Tan EX, with ABS and
Lux Package. We finally had a dealer 2 hours away near Orlando work with us and we picked it up last Wednesday. So far so good. We thought we had a really BAD vibration problem based on her ride home from the dealer.....Tires were inflated to 48PSI. I dropped them back to 30 PSI and that solved that scare. Still she thinks that she senses some small vibration around 50-60 MPH. Will keep an eye on the Sorento Problems board as some of those vibration concerns develop. Going to Orlando for Thanksgiving so I'll have a chance to check it out for myself. Finally, I drive a 98 Navigator and if KIA made a larger version of the Sorento I would be asking them where to sign. The Quality of materials, fit, finish and overall esthetics put my NAV to shame. I predict success for the Sorento and KIA if reliability holds up...and oh yes, straight MSRP 24,825. Thanks for the good input and I'll advise as to further on good/bad as she/we drive it.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Will the recalls, 0% financing and huge factory cash back effect the resale? If yes, that's properly why Honda did not recall their Odys, Accord and some models of Acura.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
He's dead on about the TOD and the Seats.

No SUV comes with a bench except maybe the F/S American ones and even that's only an option on 2wd or base models.

    -mike
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Please keep in mind that this is an SUV, and might not ride quite like a car. This also is a truck based SUV, and won't ride quite like a car based SUV.

Just a little FYI for those who are comparing with other vehicles, or reading this without knowing that tidbit.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I wish I could get an SUV with the front bench!

Is the TOD only available as part of a package? Is it the "luxury" package? What else comes with these packages besides TOD, and at how much extra cost????
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
To all Sorento owners: Like the Florida guy said, would that be a problem with the tire pressure? He lowed the pressure to 30 PSI and seemed OK. I will ask my dealer to see if they hear anything or have any comments on this.
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
with the luxury package!!! Leather seats, heated seats, wood grain touch, climate control and upgraded sound system...
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
anonymous02 - Try Kia web site for pricing, standard equipments, options and more. Torque-on-demand (T.O.D.) sold only with the luxury package (also with leather heated seats, auto climate control, AM/FM/6-disc-in-dash CD, auto headlamps)on EX 4x4 for $1830.00. Without the T.O.D., you have the shift-on-the-fly 4WD with 2H, 4L and 4H.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I really don't want all that extra stuff, just the TOD. While a great thing, it is not worth the $1830 to me.

    Another big bummer for Kia!!!!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Hmm if you drive an SUV with TOD you'll realize that it's well worth the $1800, is that $1800 MSRP? Invoice?

    -mike
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Humm... I am done with this guy. Maybe Sorento is not right for you. It is only come with the package. $1830 is MSRP. Can't find the invoice from edmunds. The TMV is $1811.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Is the radio antenna anyone a trouble when go to the car wash. It would be perfect if they put the remote release fuel door and power or in glass radio antenna since it has power everything.
