Can anyone answer my question who purchased the vehicle in nyc or the 5 boro's or county and was happy with the price and service they received sorento ex 4wd w/spoiler & ab braking system.
  • wsswestywsswesty Member Posts: 3
I bought my EX at Patrick Plaza in Charleston, WV. The MSRP was 24,495. I think that is about the same as kia.com. Anyway, happy with the deal and car so far. Let you know how my trip goes.

I purchased a Silver EX 4X4 in Staten Island. The list was 24,595. Initialy, they weren't willing to go down on the price, but after some time I was able to get them down to 24K even. It should be arriving in 2-3 weeks.

There was a posting 1 or 2 months(?) ago about a transporter sinking with 2000 Kia's on the transporter. I subscribe to justauto.com and got a headline today that a transporter had caught on fire and 1900 Kia's sank in the ocean. Maybe the guy who wrote about this earlier saw the future or this is old news and just surfacing. Anybody heard anything?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The just-auto page says it was 1900 Kia "cars" but didn't say when it happened. Nothing else reported that I can find off-hand.

can anyone tell me on the sorento....are the switches for the power window and door locks illuminated... where are the switches for the heated seats located ie; dash board or center console anyone out there know....
  • mikesfmikesf Member Posts: 84
Well, I finally corrected the only problem I saw with the LX (the lack of body side-moldings). I hated the idea of getting dinged (like many MDXs, also without any side protection) and installed some moldings on my Sorento. My best friend, who happens to own a BMW dealership, gave me the moldings for the X5 and I installed them myself.

    Here is the link

    http://ca.photos.yahoo.com/mdsf_1

    in the Sorento directory.

The last 3 photos show the side-molding.

    Cheers!

1st. post, keep up the good work fellas..
Picked up my kia sorento ex, alpine grey (darker than the silver, blends in with the two tone moulding, looks like 1 color), luxury package, paid $495 less invoice...$26,000. Bought it at Major Kia, Northern Blvd, Queens, NY.
Real nice car..inside and out. Just had 1 problem, the cd player would not load any cd's. So they will have to replace the unit.
    Otherwise, no problems, no vibrations....
real smooth car and plenty of looks!!

#1007-mwitt58714: power window switches on all doors are illuminated. The power door lock switch is not, but that shouldn't be a problem, since it is directly below one of the power window switches. Both switches for the heated seats are on the center console, directly above the Auto Climate Control display, to the left and right of the large hazard warning switch.

#1008-mikesf: those look good, Mike! I hope they're enough to protect your new Sorento! Our EX has cladding all around and it's made out of some sort of plastic composite material, with color all the way through. I'm hoping that's enough to prevent or at least hide those inevitable dings. If not, maybe you could introduce me to your BMW friend? :)

#1009-dimitrie: congrats on your new Sorento! $26,495 seems like MSRP, not invoice (unless you have other options not listed). So maybe you paid $495 under MSRP? $495 under invoice would mean dealer sold to you at a loss.

You sound like a very happy new Sorento owner! ...as we are, but I think ours is losing that 'new-car-smell'....and we've only had it for a month :(

Sorry to hear about the CD player not being able to load. Is that a problem when loading a single CD, all 6 CDs, or both? I'm very sure our antenna connection is loose, 'cause lots of static, etc. Other than that, the car has been just PERFECT!

How safe is the Sorento? I know it has front air bags and side curtain air bags, but how did it rate in tests? I have not been able to find how well it did. I am trying to determine if I should purchase it or not. The warranty looks great, but I rather not deal with vibrations that could lead up to a bigger problem, unless it is just wear and tear for the first few thousand miles. I rather not be the crash test dummy or even the subject in determining it's true quality.

Please let me know about the crash test information and anything else besides the warranty, that would convince me to purchase this vehicle.

    Thank you!

If you are happy, you got a great deal. But you are not, or you would not be ranting and raving. If I just paid $25k for something and after the first few days said I don't love the color, I would be questioning my actions.
Customer service? Letter to the owner? Good luck, he has already deposited your check. Besides, he gave you what you wanted, a bargain basement price. Better yet, he made you work to get it. One of the oldest saying in the sales/marketing world: "People will pay dearly for what they are told they cannot have".

...but she wants to buy the GMC Envoy. I told her it was a waste of money to buy something so huge. It's hard to imagine that Kia came out with such a wonderful SUV after seeing some of the cars they've produced. They really have overcome that sigma. With that said, I feel that paying MSRP for the Sorrento is paying too much. I NEVER pay MSRP for anything. I suspect within 4-6 months KIA dealers will be dealing. Hopefully some folks can wait. I also am trying to convince another friend to try the KIA before he trades his Saturn sedan for a Saturn VUE. GM has 0% financing so he is kinda tempted. Any comments?

I hope to see the 0% finaning for Sorento. I looked at People First and AAA. People First is 4.5% and AAA is 4.39. Most dealers tell 5.9%
  • mikesfmikesf Member Posts: 84
Thanks! I too hope they're enough. I now feel safer when parking in those mall parking lots.

Speaking of my BMW friend... I met him for lunch last week and while he usually treats me to driving one of their cars (last time was a Mini Cooper S, an X5 before that)this time I insisted he drive the Sorento. After all the jokes about him having to wear a fake beard and glasses were over he took the wheel and we took off. In the end he was honestly impressed by the vehicle's handling, performance, and fit and finish.

Re post #1009 dimitrie....we have an EX with Luxury as well and on the CD player I thought ours was broken as well until I got into the manual and read about the Delphi stereo which by the way sounds great. Because it has a 6 disc changer it has to load in one at a time and allow the changer to advance up or down. I thought it wouldn't take the CD until I read that you have to push the cd button and the little LED by the opening glows red after the tray moves it will turn green and this will take in the CD automatically or you can load it in at that time then you have to do the same for all the CD's loading them in one at a time. Hope this helps.
RE #1013...babieboy acclording to the reps I talked to last night the Kia is to get a 5 star rating by the NHSTA for crash safety I explain further on in this post.
AS far as vibrations go we have not felt any as of yet and to all the new Sorento owners please check you tire air pressure. Ours were set at 50 lbs. and rode like a flinstone car. I lowered them to 33 pounds(placard states 30 but I add in 10% for highway driving) I think many dealers are gun shy after the Firestone Ford debacle.
Now for the good stuff. Our dealer held a get to know us night, last night, for new Kia owners and it was quite good they had food, munchies gifts and prizes and because of a pending snow storm here in CT there was just my wife, myself and another lady who bougth a Kia auto. So we really cleaned up on the gifts, Kia coffee cups and promo toys and we got a nice big Kia golf umbrella. At the meeting there was the NewEngland N.Y. Sales manager and and as well as the Service rep for the smae area. In all it was interesting as they wanted to know how we like our Sorento and what could they do about improving it. I gave a couple of suggestions as a band around the visors to hold mail and such. A extra grab handle on the passenger side window pillar, makes for easier entry and to start coming out with some accessories such as rubber mats. Also they let us know about some privy info. The Sorento in Jan 2003 will get a 5 star safety crash rating from the NHSTA. Also this is the last year(2003)for the Sportage as it will come out in 2004 as a 2005 and be based on the Hyundia SantaFe unibody. The reps said it may closely rsemble the SantFe. Also Hyndia was a little annoyed that Kia got the mini van Sedona and the Sorento and they have to wait. Also that Kia is coming out with a pickup truck based on the Soreto frame in about 3-4 yrs.
Now for some info the Service rep mention my wife and I. The Sorento has a break in period for the engine. Where for the first 600 miles try to vary speeds and to not drive at the same speed for to long. I asked about hiway driving and he said to go between 65 or highr and even 55 just to work in the engine. BY doing this they found people are getting better gas mieage than the sticker states. Also this tid bit which I thought was BS There is no after market oil filter for the Sorento yet and do not use Frams as their test have showed that the Frams tend losen up allow oil to squirt out and the Kia filter for the Sorento is about 2.99 at this dealer. By the way where I live in CT we got 6 inches of snow and my wife reports that on the way to work that her auto 4X4 worked great and she even tried the 4LO and the vehicle just kept going.
Sorry I ambled on to long.
Everyone have a good and safe holiday.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
hicaffa - I hope you and your wife enjoy it. It looks like we are getting over 6" of snow by the end of the day. I can't wait to get one. I bet you love the wiper de-icer.
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
I aouldn't know about that because my wife won't get out of the vehicle long enough for me to drive it. But I'm sure she tried it.

30 days since I purchased the Kia Sorrento (posting 578/594). It is great vehicle. The garage door controls in the rear-view mirror is a cool feature. Rear seat leg-room-excellent. Hard to get my wife out of it. She says it's to keep the miles off the SC-300, but I think she just likes it. Have taken it on interstate, dirt roads in North Ga Mountains, and on US Highway 64 (curvy mountain road)in Western North Carolina Mountains. Handled great on all three. Takes curves wonderfully. No complaints with the exception of gas consumption. A little less than 15mpg city - around 18mpg on Interstate.

hciaffa thank you for the follow up. THis makes me feel better about possibly purchasing this vehicle.

Good posting. However, the statement of your Kia rep on the upcoming Sportage ("...be based on the Hyundia SantaFe unibody. The reps said it may closely rsemble the SantFe.") is wrong.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Actually, there are two version of the current 4-door Sportage in Asian countries (maybe for European countries too), the Sportage and Grand Sportage with long wheelbase. I don't know why Kia don't bring the Grand Sportage here. Anyway, save this on Sportage board.

#1017-mikesf: Mike, it's good to hear about your BMW dealer friend's honest opinion about the Sorento. I know we all feel that way, but I'm sure we're looking at our cars through rose-colored glasses. So it's comforting to hear such candid praise from a representative of an upscale competitor!

#1014-djasonw: many new owners purchased below MSRP, so don't let any dealer tell you otherwise. I agree that 0% financing is an attractive come-on. In a perfect world for us consumers, we should be able to have our cake and eat it too, but for us, it was worth 4.45% to have something terrific for the next 5, 7, or 10 years. Some of the articles I've read about the Saturn VUE were very discouraging. Be a good friend and don't let your friend buy a VUE!

#1018-hciaffa: one of the KIA brochures in our owner's package cautions us specifically to vary our driving speed during the break-in period. It would seem your dealer's service manager was giving out good advice. Thanks for sharing all your info!

#1021-mbluff: I didn't know you purchased your EX the day before we did....cheers for both of us! We haven't taken ours out on anything but California freeways during commute hours. It's good to hear it'll handle well out in the wilderness! Your gas mileage does seem a bit low. I don't know if I've been lucky or if I'm a slow-poke driver....thus far, I'm getting just under 20 mpg, last fill up was 19.8 or 19.9...can't remember exactly.

To clear things up.. "Joe (He's Lying) Isuzu" was played by David Leisure who later starred in TV's Empty Nest (Charley Dietz). He's also been in other TV appearances and movies.

The latest Kia Commercial (guy talking about tying up the accountant, etc.) stars Holmes Osborne as the spokesperson. Look him up on imdb.com and you'll recognize him from other movies and TV shows.

I've got about 30K bugeted for a new SUV. I want 4x4 or a locking AWD but a comfortable ride as well. I test drove a Kia Sorento, non-4x4 base model as that's all the dealer here has as well as Toyota 4-runner, Nissan Murano and the Honda Pilot.
I liked them all but I'm leaning towards the Toyota vs the Kia. It would be a loaded Sorento vs a Beefed up SR5 or a low grade Limited. I just have a few questions...

The Kia's A/C and heater controls looked and felt really flimsy to me. The outer ring was an oval and the inner one round but held on by a thin plastiv stalk--I thougt I nearly broke it off when I turned it too hard. The controls were the first major drawback to me. How would the automatic controls be (similar rotating dial or something else) and does anyone have a picture as I have not yet seen one and the dealer won't get more in for a while.

I noticed the strange vibrations that some of the other people posting here reported. It felt like it was comming from the left front, but it seemed to only do it at certian speeds. Would that also be from overinflated tires?

I usually hold onto vehicles for 5-6 yrs and I'm a little afraid of what the return on the Kia, an otherwise competent vehicle would be.

I fell in love with the Kia on sight, but after that test drive, I was a little scared away. Between the two is nearly 5-6K, but I would rather pay that now than suffer for it down the line.

If anybody has some insight, let me know.

    Wanda,

Thanks for the White plains info. I purchased just the EX 4X4. I wasn't sure at the moment I wanted all the extras in the luxury. it wasn't even about the money, so I just went for the EX. Good luck with your shopping. Let me know how it goes, and what your experiences with the vehicle are like.

Go here for a picture of the Automatic Climate Control: http://www.canadianautoreview.com/sorento-console-800.JPG

This picture is taken from a Canadian version of the Sorento. Ours is a USA version; the ACC looks exactly the same, but the 6-disc CD/radio is completely different. All controls on the ACC are push buttons...no knobs or rotating dials. IMHO, nothing feels cheap or flimsy.

Some owners have reported vibrations problems, but many others haven't noticed any vibrations at all. After 1,800 miles, ours still seem fine.

Hope this info helps.....good luck with your new car purchasing decision!

problems might be coming from. Check your tire pressures! It can really cause increased road vibrations and poor handling problems as well. I stepped away from this thread for 2 days and had 60-odd posts to read! Whoa! Great to see Kia getting such HUGE interest-something hit me when I still had my '99 Sephia and I knew Kia had their collective acts together. Gotta get back to the Paul McCartney concert special on TV now-it's rocking quite nicely boys!

thinking of purchasing the sorento 4x2 with the luxury package for 24,300. i couldn't find the 10 speakers or the separate ampilfier, neither could the dealer. need insight on a fair price and the location of 10 speakers and amp. can anyone help?
  • schip1schip1 Member Posts: 97
We paid $24,302 for 4x2 EX, luxury, ABS, spoiler, and auto load leveling.

Speakers: there are 4 large speaker grills, one on each door, and 2 small grills at dash level on the front doors. Behind each of the 4 large grills are 2 speakers, mounted co-axially, giving a total of 10 speakers.

Amplifier: don't know where it is, have not looked for it, but it's definitely there. My guess is it's behind the dash. Curious...why is location of amplifier important to you?
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
Hey no arguments. I just noted what the Kia reps had stated. Of course they are not going to tell everything. But for sure the Sportage will return as a unibody type crossover to compete with the Forester, CRv, Outlander and the the others. It may not have the flares that the body of the Santa Fe has, but I am sure that between Hyundia and Kia it will be a parts bin car ,just like the Optima has many components like the Sonata.

Just picked up an EX with luxury package on Tues. I can't seem to get the altimiter to show my elevation here in Harrisburg. I can get it to be zero and when crossing a local small mountain it shows 300 feet, but elevation at the airport is 300, so the meter should read 600. Any ideas ?

Thanks for the kind words and replies over the past days to all of you. To cut a long story short - as I posted it so many times here in the hall - there will be two Sportage replacements:
    a) The "tall-wagon"-type AWD-version on the next gen Elantra-platform (to be shared by Kia).
    b) The shorter "Sorento Sport" 2-door "real" 4WD.
The current Sportage as well as the extended version mentioned above ("Sportage Wagon" in Europe), are history for now...
  • carspy01carspy01 Member Posts: 137
iluv is absolutely correct, and some mentioned it on this board before as on the "Sorento problems" board: In 99% of all the cases, guys, it will be the tire pressure. They get overinflated for overseas shipments, and some dealers do not bother. So, before a test drive, check them!!! It will make it much more pleasant!
On the other hand, we have a truck based SUV with multiple-wheel drive, and a refined but still truck-adapted power steering. Please do not forget this when driving it. The power steering is electonically speed adjusted!
So, if you think the Sorento will behave like a Town Car or DeVille - forget it.
The 3.5l V6 top speed is nearly 200km/h (120 miles/h) and I can tell you, the only vibrations you feel in a Euro-spec Sorento are the teeth and nervous vibrations of your "American" passengers!!!!

Hecny, we don't have time to verify emails, phone numbers and the like. Plus salepeople at car dealers tend to move or quit every 6 weeks. And some people try to use the forums to send business to their guy so they can get a kickback or birddog fee. We try to discourage this sort of thing so Town Hall doesn't look like a bunch of want ads. Thanks!

Just wanted to let everyone know that this morning I checked my tire pressure in my new EX and they all ran around 45 to 48 psi. I reduced them to 34 (cold) all the way around and it drove like a totally different vehicle. The ride was much, much smoother and the vibration between 40-50 mph is gone. Going on a 300 mile trip tomorrow and will report gas mileage, etc. when I get back.

#1038: the altimeter is based on atmospheric pressure and as such, readings can change even as you're sitting still. I've also noticed that it can go bonkers every now and then. I work on the island of Alameda, in SF Bay, so when I reset altimeter to zero, I know it's within 5 feet of sea level. The craziest reading I've noticed was when after pulling into the garage at home, the altimeter was reading 3,000 feet!! I had forgotten to pick up something, so within less than 2 minutes, I got back into the Sorento, started it up, and altimeter was back to normal, reading 200 feet.

#1040: tee333, you're very welcomed! Glad I could help. You know...it's funny, but I can't seem to find any specs for the power rating of the amplifier. I think I remember reading somewhere that it's 280 watts, but I could be totally wrong. In any case, there is lots of volume and the sound is very pure, crisp, and clean, so there has to be an amp somewhere in the system.

The dealer we purchased from is Florin Road Kia in Sacramento, CA. http://www.frkia.com/kia/ When we were shopping, several dealers were ready to sell at $600 below MSRP. Our price of $24,302 happens to be $500 above invoice or $1,033 below MSRP. We got this deal for a couple of reasons: 1) it was end of month, October 28th, 9:30 pm and 2) it has auto load leveling, a $510 option which we did not want. So in essence, they charged us $77 for auto load leveling.

Again...good luck with your new car shopping. If I may, I would recommend you take the plunge! A comparable Toyota or Honda would cost thousands more and warranty would be 7 years less. For me, that more than compensates for any "Kia concerns'.

#1047: mwitt58714, yes, there is a panic alarm. When you're locking the doors, only the parking lights flash...horn does not beep, which is what I prefer. If you press the 'LOCK' button for more than 2 seconds, the lights flash AND the horn beeps for approx 25 seconds.

The doors shut with a solid 'thump', just like our current Infiniti and previous MB.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Is this not a place to exchange info on cars and dealers?????

I guess we shouldn't post links to Kia dealers either? Every forum on here recommends their favorite dealer and posts up their experiences with dealers. It's quite important and in fact in the "owners clubs" we actually have whole TOPICS dedicated to nothing other than the exchange of this type of information.
