Pray you don't see $2.50 gas again because you will probably be unemployed. (in a worldwide depression)
Why? In January of 2007 gas was $2.10, oil was about $60 per barrel and the economy was in better shape and unemployment was lower that it is now. I hope it goes back to $2.50 and that people learned from it this time.
Sure, many would make the argument that in 1997 the economy was much better, gas was 65c a gallon (+35c tax) and just because it was $1.50 in 05 (+35c tax) $2.00 in 07 (+35c tax) or 3.00 now we can hope for 1.50 and learn this time. About 80c to 1.50 to 2.50 to 3.50 over 10 years..... starting to see a trend?
Sorry fella, 3 billion who are making $1000 a year are on their way to $4000 a year in the next 10 years, and they aren't getting saddle sore anymore on a bike. Not to mention the semi's and trucks their economys will use. All this is unprecedented. Even when the Democrats save their political skins and open up all the US capacity for drilling the price drop will be temporary, but greatly reduce future price increases. Technically, alternatives are 30 year plans but will be helpful.
All the domestics are bankrupt, they have all dumped their only profitable capacity for 20 mpg vehicles (no plans on any $2.50 gas for any lengthy period of time or there would be a market for them) They have few ideas (other than renamed imports)on how to make 30 mpg vehicles profitable given Union constraints.
Good luck --jjf

Excuse me, but it's McCain who is drooling to start drilling. RIGHT NOW. (a quote right from his mouth). Dem's don't want to drill, and Obama said he would consider it. When Bush took office gas was $1.46 (Calif) If we do drill we won't get anything for 10 years, then it will all go on the open market and we would get about 2% of the profits. Bush and Cheney and the rest of the neocons have done quite well on oil the last 7 years while the American people have suffered badly. Record profits for the oil companies and they even get billions in tax breaks. We are paying for that. They've also done quite well profiteering off a war that they lied about to start. And the American people are going to have to pay the bill for the next 3 generations. They are murderous criminals and should be tried and executed for what they have done to this country. Unfortunately there are people out there that want to vote for McSame, a Bush clone if there ever was one, so they must have enjoyed the last 71/2 years and want four more. It's unbelievable. And please don't tell me to move to another country. I would if I could because this one has gone down the tubes. If I was fortunate enough to win the lottery I'd be gone as soon as I got the check. I've travelled all over the world and there's a lot better out there than this.
It's easy to get discouraged, but brush it off and don't give up. That car is sitting somewhere waiting for you, you've just got to find it. Right now the Corollas are flying out of the dealerships, but not all of them. I don't know where you live but do a statewide search. If you are close to a state line, call in that state also. Don't just call one dealer, call a lot of dealers and bargain hard. Give it a little time and don't settle for less than you want.

I got an offer from a dealer in Dallas Fort Worth area for 09 Corolla LE, $16,800+TTL. It comes with cruise control, VSC, keyless entry, aluminum wheels, 7 year/100000 miles warranty. Is it a good deal?
Finally picked up my factory ordered loaded Barcelona Red XLE today. Beautiful car and drives perfect. $20400.00 TMV in my area is $22200, Spoiler, Alloys, JBL Radio, Mudguards, Carpets, Stability Control, Cruise, Side Moldings, Moon Roof, and Moon Roof air deflector. The only thing I DIDN'T get is navigation. Well under MSRP and slightly over invoice. Very pleased !!! Thinking about the Platinum seven year bumper to bumper warranty offered initially at $1016.00 but it got cheaper, until I left they were at $675.00 for the warranty, any suggestions?

First I will rate my entire experience on scale of 1-10, 10 highest. IT WOULD BE A 5.
Here is story
Via Edmunds contacted 3 dealers for price quote on Toyota Coralla S with D option package. 2 e-mailed and said call them and N. Toyo e-mailed back a price quote of $18,895. Knowing good price I contacted them and they said come-in. I went in with my wife and they didn't have color she wanted. Asked when and they delivery in 1 month. I asked to put deposit and pre-contract on car. They said they could take deposit but no pre-contract and the deposit only guaranteed me a call but not guarantee that it wouldn't be pre-sold. IE they getter better price if they can. Even the sales manager said this to me that a deposit only guarantees a call and the company will not pre-contract on a car especially if in short supply.
About 3 weeks later worried car wasn't going to be mine we changed the color to one they had on the lot. Again S with Option D. I contacted them and I was told their price went-up between July and August and now selling for $19,295. As I wanted the car I didn't want to tell them they were straight out lying to me that they were just trying to get more money.
Now the fun begins: Went to dealer to purchase the $19,295 car. I was handed off from Internet sales to a young man who indicated he was son of I think general manager. I told him I wanted to add Lojack early warning and Toyota's 7/100 platinum warranty. He came back with a piece of paper with a line drawn through it and on the right was price $995 and $1995 and on the left was $1295 and $2695. He indicated on left was their cost with Lojack first and platinum second and on the right was their selling cost. I then asked him why he was lying to me about their cost and selling price. He was indignant and said these were his cost. I said where do you want to start the e-mail that I had from Lojack showing MSRP at $995 for the early warning system or the Toyota website showing MSRP of the platinum 7/100 on the Corolla S at $1300. He said hold on and walked away. Long story short they sold me the Lojack for $895 and the Warranty for $1100. Funny was about an hour later as we were wrapping up cost he indicated his cost for the Lojack at $695 and I challenged him again saying he had told me an hour earlier his cost was $995.
OK, we are now 3 hours into a process that should've taken 1 hour. Next was the finance process which to speak of their was none as we had Capital One Pre-Approved Auto Finance Checks and we were making a large personal payment. Well the finance manager proceeded to tell me that sometimes these don't work and they wanted to offer me an alternative at a higher interest rate. When I said we were already approved and all the dealer had to due was submit the paperwork he said well I can't guarantee Capital One would pay. A later conversation with Capital One they told me I was being lied to outright and they were tired of dealers pulling these pranks to try to get customers to finance with the captive arm finance companies.
Well finally got car after 4 hours (even though I had initial price, cost of lojack and warranty)
This whole process of the Dealer lying to me, having at least 4 people talk to me to try to confuse me during the process, and potentially illegal selling activity (trying to sell LoJack and Toyota's own warranty above MSRP and telling me their cost was above MSRP) just continues to sicken me on car Dealers and the process. In the end the dealer still made approximately 5% or around $1000 which is good on NEW cars but they still wanted to stick it to me. I feel sorry for those who don't go in knowing dealer cost as if I had known the MSRP of the warranty I would of thought even $1995 was a good price. How easily they could've taken advantage of say an older person.
OK why a 5 versus a 1. The internet sales team was good and they followed-up on every process and didn't per se try to take advantage of me. Obviously they don't work on commission as their job is to give Internet sales customers a good price to incent them to come into the dealer and then the sharks circle.
The other drawback was I received a call offering me that if I left a glowing feedback about the dealer on Edmunds they would give me a $25 gas certificate. BIG INSULT
Would I buy again from them; well yes if I used the Internet process as by knowing all the factors I know I would be getting a good price. Does this mean I have to like the dealer process or the dealer; no not at all.
Does anyone know of any rebates coming soon for the corolla le? In May 2008, some were able to get 16500 OTD after a $750 rebate. I am looking to purchase a corolla Le with keyless entry in the Southern California area. Any good deals around?
I've been religiously going through these forums to see what people were expecting to pay for their corollas. It helped so much in my decision to get the corolla so hopefully this helps others get a good idea about what to expect.
I had the best time during my whole car buying experience. After wheeling and dealing with a fleet manager, I was able to get a Toyota Corolla S (Magnetic Gray) with aftermarket Navi and bluetooth for $20,900 OTD. This included an alarm, 5 piece carpet, cruise control, and ipod connectivity. It also includes the power package and the sport Kit (but not the wheels). I was also able to talk him into giving me a cargo net (icing on the cake). I just brought it home today and I'm spending my sweet time getting acquainted with my new "baby."
I think it was a good deal, but some of you might think otherwise. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. This forum was able to help me, so I hope to return the favor. Thanks.
A reporter hopes to interview a consumer who has negotiated a great deal on a car recently. Please respond to jfallon@edmunds.com before Friday, October 10, 2008 with your daytime contact information and a few words about your experience.
I had an 07 Corolla stick but traded it in on a Mazda3 stick because I just could not get comfortable driving the Corolla. Placement of the steering wheel and the pedals was just too strange and I couldn't get a seating postion that felt right.
My commute is getting longer and slower and a stick car is getting to be a real pain in the back, ankles, knees, etc. so I'm thinking of getting an automatic something. Has the 2009 Corolla interior/driving position been restyled or changed at all or is it still similar to the previous generation? Thanks.
I do not feel that you would find the 2009 Corolla comfortable for seating. I own one, and I can say that. I personally can live with it, especially with cruise control, but I think that if a person has had trouble in the past being comfortable in the 2007 Corolla that the 2009 will present the same challenges, even automatic. It's taken me a week to find the right position that doesn't tweak my back a bit. I believe the telescopic steering wheel placement is standard on all models, so that may help a bit. There may be reviews talking about improvements, and those comments would be worth seeking out. I also did not drive the 2007 Corolla, so I can't make the direct comparison that you can make. Test drive sounds like a good plan to me.
My girlfriend and her mom are in the process to buy a corolla, it is there first car and the dealer called requesting proof of income, proof of residency, and 5 references because it is there first car, does this sound normal? i dont know im just very skeptical of dealers
Need Help !! ASAP on 09 Corolla LE in SF Bay Area !!
Looking for 09 Corolla LE , MSRP=$16750
After few options (CL Cruise Control,KE Keyless Entry,CF Carpet Floor Mats,FE 50 State Emissions) = $18164 on the window sticker
what should i start negotiate? if they say they will sell at 1000 above invoice , does it mean $16400+$1000=$17400
what would you guys start negotiate? also , Residual Value= 61%, but is it 61% of MSRP+options $18164 in the following example? or 61% of invoive price $16400? or without option $15158 ?
CR model says you should start negotiations for this Corolla LE with keyless entry and cruise control and mats at $15,540. And, you should end up paying $15,950 to $16,370. If you look through former posts you will find lots of this configuration selling for $16100-$16200, so I am sure that is right at the spot you want it. Hope that helps.
Depends on what part of the country your looking to purchase from back in May the same LE except with Stability/Traction Control ( +$250) i purchased for $16,250 now with slower sales due to loan approval you may have some choices.
If you are paying cash, that is definitely a "BUY BUY BUY" quote. With the holdback included, the dealer paid 15974 for the vehicle. Have you asked whether the price of 16799 includes all fees including delivery charge and documentation fees?
If there is a trade-in, be careful. They are going pretty far back to cut you a price of 16299. They may be counting on undervaluing your trade. You would need to research the value of your trade well, as I suspect this is a deal which will both be financed (i.e. you are getting a loan from somewhere) and, you are trading in a car.
Again, the above is for the 2009 LE with weather guard, 6-CD/MP3, Cruise, keyless entry, VSC and TRAC. <-- Yes to all of these, correct?
The only other thing I would wonder about ... and this only applies if you are financing the car with a loan ... is why take the $500 rebate when you can take advantage of 0% financing?
15974 is using the model of CR {Google: CR buying kit user } and includes all the details you listed in your previous message for package D. In the current Corolla market, you should expect to pay 103% to 107% of the $15,974 number. 15974 is the price the dealer paid for that car, including all the options you have mentioned. On the low end, consumer should pay [ 103%] of 16453.00 and high end [ 107% ] of 17092.00 .
Your dealer has offered $16799 with 0% financing, and 3 years to pay. I believe that, even if unannounced to this date, you will see additional $150-$200 for documentation fees added. So you would be financing $16999 for 36 months, is $472.19 per month for 36 months.
Now, in my opinion, $472.19 per month is very high monthly payment for a compact Corolla LE. But of course, I do not know how much you plan to put down on down payment.
Going 48 months with the 1.9% financing is much more adviseable in my opinion. The reason for this is because of the high retain value your Corolla will hold during those 48 months (and even beyond 48 months). or instance, in this example, you could put down $1,500 downpayment; then choose 48 months financing at 1.9% interest rate; and your monthly payment would be then $335.60 for 48 months. This is much more reasonable for a small compact car on the lower end of market such as Corolla. Compare the $335 monthly payment to $472 monthly payment, and you free your budget by a good $137 dollars per month. Yes, when taking the 48 month option, it is true that this will cost you additional $580.00 in interest over the 48 month period. But that is only about $11.00 extra per month, or the cost of three (3) cafe grande mocca latte caramel per month extra ... to free your budget otherwise by $137 per month !! So drink three (3) less coffees in each month and enjoy your extra $137 in each month to spend or save as you wish otherwise.
At the end of those 48 months, your Corolla LE would still have a trade in value of about seven thousand ($7000-$8000) dollars depending on mileage and condition. That is a very good amount to trade it in after 48 months, advancing you $7000-$8000 on your next car.
Another great idea: If you were willing to spend $472 for 36 months, then you can take that extra $137 per month and invest it into any sort of saving program such as moneymarket or good savings account. And you will more than make back your lost $580 in the 48 month stretch, by being a saver in an interest bearing account.
For reference, this is what i was sent. it differs from other website, so who really knows what dealers pay

Yes, it's impossible to say for certain, but your sheet shows only a difference of $276 between what my "dealer paid for" price and your sheet's "dealer paid for" price. (15974 versus 15698). One thing is for certain, the dealer won't sell a car for less than what he or she paid for it, that much is just common sense. I suspect there is much more than holdbacks which occur, in terms of volume of sales for the dealership, and a "return back later" on the cost of delivery (if it was ever charged for each individual car in the first place).
The important thing, is that if a reasonable amount the dealer actually paid for the car can be ascertained at approx. ~158xx --- just don't be the poor fellow who pays 18804 for it.
I think you have a very good deal captured right now, I certainly wouldn't be shy to buy it for that price based on my own research during the last month. That's my two cents anyway.

I was hoping you would reply to my post. You're excellent in your remarks and explain and question things thoroughly.
The 16799 includes destination charge of 720. There is no trade-in. I am curiosly he did not mention any documentation fees.
I have been leaning towards doing the 0% for the 3 years. What is the $27/28.00 per 1000 borrowed? Do you know?\

Lastly, and sorry to take time away from you. Where did you come up with 15974?
Thank you
15974 is using the model of CR {Google: CR buying kit user }
and includes all the details you listed in your previous message for package D.
Hope that helps.

I am from foreign country and not familiar with car accessories.
I live in Northern CA and buying a new '09 Corolla LE.
Could anyone recommend me the accessories that maybe I need?
Do I need "all weather guard package" in my area?
Thank you
