BTW, why aren't Unimogs (or Sprinters for that matter) badged as Mercedes in the US?

IIRC: at least for the Sprinter, Mercedes research showed that plumbers, florists, carpenters, et al were not interested in driving a Mercedes truck. It was felt that their customers would think they made too much money if they were driving around in trucks with 3 pointed stars. In Europe, MB has a much different connotation than here in North America.

Anyone else have trouble getting into Edmund's today? I signed in okay, but when I went to read messages, I was shown an error page.

Change mine to Yukon XL 3/4 Ton, Denali is out for now, it's only a minor difference but different none the less. 8.1L engine, yum yum and 12,000lb towing capacity.

Juice- wow, I didn't realize the stock GT was so hight on the grunt scale! ;-)

Mike- actually, I wasn't planning on getting race tires, just better street tires. Maybe some Proxxes 4s or P zero neros. Although I think you're right, maybe I'll see what these stock tires can do. Maybe they'll stick a little better once I have worn some tread off of them.

Ed- Why not just get the CXT? How much for a loaded Unimog? ;-)

While they rated it mid-pack, they were extremely complementary throughout the overview, and the dedicated page on the test car. The only shortcoming noted was the tendency to oversteer in emergency situations, something that CU comes down on quite hard in all of their reviews. In fact they say that the car would have rated much higher in the overall standings were it not for this handling trait.

Bat it'll be a sedan, I have the Trooper and eventually the Yukon XL for wagon duties.

I found it odd that they gave it such a glowing review yet rated it so low (relatively speaking). IIRC, they said it was the most fun to drive of all the sports sedans they'd tested (not just the 4 for that issue).

I'll take an LR3 too, please. I don't read US mags anymore. But the Euro press loves the thing, there's plenty of good press on it.

I found this on the Auto Channel web site, so I'm assuming automotive applications are on the way too.

    Bob,

EE Times ran a story a few weeks back about clustered white/blue high output LED lighting for automotive headlights. They say it is coming, but still a few years off for cars. It just cannot yet compete on price with good old halogens.

    Steve
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Agree, Frank, but they were honest in citing their two main reasons - at the limit oversteer, and bottom of the pack fuel economy (18mpg observed). They loved the car overall, but it lost serious points in their grading system for these issues.

Sorry if this is old news but I noticed an article today in Subaru's Drive magazine about the Subaru Crew. It's at http://www.drive.subaru.com/Fall04_SubaruDifference.htm

Not really "old" news, but yes, we've been discussing it over in the Member's thread. It's pretty neat. :)

I've been invited to an Ford Escape hybrid event at FedEx field just outside of Washington this Friday. I've never driven an Escape, let along a hybrid version of it. Should be interesting.

I'll again be at FedEx field, this time at a Lexus event.

    Bob
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Don't you have a lawn to mow or a room to paint?

My wife would kill me if I attended all the events we get invited to!!

Last weekend was a C&D thing at Gillette Stadium and this weekend is the Love Mercedes event at South Weymouth Naval Air Station - both south of Boston.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Timing is everything. Lawn was mowed last week, and doesn't need it. Painting rooms? I hate that and the wife knows it, so she's learned to live it.

The day before the Lexus thing we are having a yard sale, in which I've been drafted for. :(

Bob has it all worked out. He takes the evening to assemble a strategic plan to get away from his wife but takes a home-base day to make her happy.

    Smart move ;-)

Over at nabisco Jon [in CT] has posted a link from Subaru of Germany, where they are now offering LPG conversions.

Just go to Japan and ride in almost any taxi if you want to see LPG conversions. I think it's mandated by law that taxi fleets use LPG. The only drawback is that the tank takes up a good portion of the trunk.

Friday: workout, day camping/picnic, take Daniel to babysitting job.
Saturday: 9AM soccer (Patrick), 12 noon baseball (Daniel), then to sleepover.
Sunday: Church, serve coffee & donuts afterward, 3pm baseball game (Daniel again)
Monday: Exam techniques class, 830-noon, workout, winterize trailer. Soccer practice 530pm (Patrick)
Tuesday: Drive/chaperone 7th grade field trip AM, mow lawn & winterize sprinklers PM.

So much for a 5-day weekend!
    Cheers!

We had a few ambulances that were propane conversions in the 80's. The dual-fuel systems we tried at first were hard to optimize the tuning between the two fuels, so they converted to 100% LPG. Propane units were fine around the city, but finding propane at zero-dark-thirty in some SmallTown, Anywhere to get the neo-natal team back home was sometimes a challenge.

    Cheers!

I'm curious to see what you think of the Escape's electric steering. I've got a friend who has a new Toyota Prius. He's thinking about selling it, partly because of how dead the on-center feeling is at highway speeds. He's also not happy with the intrusive traction control.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Electric Power Steering. I had that on my XT6, worked great, loved it and no draw on the motor. :)

I'm not sure about this, but I believe the Subaru B9SC hybrid sports car concept can run up to 50 mph purely on the electric motor.

Maybe things were posted about this elsewhere, but there was an article in our local paper this morning and this car interested me ... thought I'd see if I could get your opinions on it ... it's called the YCC - Your Concept Car ... and was designed by a team of women

I think it has some COOL features ... no idea on cost if produced ...

I tried to find it on the news site, but could not ... did a search and came up with this ..

    http://www.conceptlabvolvo.com/vcc/ycc/

    see ya !
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
    Brenda

This car was shown at one of this year's auto auto shows; NY, I think(?).

I've liked recent Volvos, and this is no exception. You know me, I love to see new ideas presented, regardless of where they came from. I may not agree with all of them, but they're all food for thought, which is good.

Colin: you gotta tell yourself you will remember your dreams before you go to sleep. Then when you wake up, try to recall them right away, before you do anything.

Funny thing about the W8 is if you look, they are discounted, but not as much as Touaregs are, at least at Fitz.

    Bad sign for the Touareg?

And I'll have to insert my obligatory "don't go upscale" comment here.

That YCC is definitely an example of a concept, not a production litmus test. I pay less attention to those, to be honest I don't even remember what features it had.

What did you like about it, Brenda?

I like the 'gull wing' doors for the same reason I like the back of my outback ... it helps shield me in bad weather while I get things in and out of the car ... would be nice to be shielded putting ME in and out of the car ...

storage in the car looks to be practical and well thought out ... I like the way the back seats fold up so that it's easier to set things in the floor (you know how a theater seat looks when you go in a theater? and you push the seat down to sit on it? that's the way the back seats fold up and out of the way ...

I like the way the whole front of the car lifts up and there's not a line for the hood

I like the idea of just sticking the gas nozzle in and not having to deal with a door/cap (and also for the washer fluid

I like the idea of seats, pedals, etc. adjusting for each driver by the remote carried (although I know this isn't just a Volvo thing)

I like the look of the car .. it's very sporty, but also very practical ... just has a nice shape ...

    anything else???
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Ok what Sports Car/Sporty/Powerful Car is your favorite in RWD or AWD and a Manul transmission under $50k?

PS: It has to have cruise control and Navigation from the factory as well.

    -mike
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Darn, I wish you could step *over* $50k for this one, that would let me pick the C55 AMG 8-)

    C320 sport sedan $38k
    diamond black
    black leather interior
    dvd command nav
    factory 6cd
    hands free communication
    heated front seats
    split rear seat
    lighting package
    sunroof package
    total = $47k

Anyone who went to the Mercedes Drive event - did they let you drive a C55? Wishful thinking...should still be fun nonetheless. (going there on 10/17)

    Currently looking at:

    05 Vette
    06 Legacy GT Limited

    -mike
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
pretty tame IMO, hence my appeal for the C55 if I'm going to spend $50k+. ;-)

    The C320 has a 215hp/229lb-ft V6 (3199 cc). The manual transmission is a short throw 6sp

I didn't think of the Legacy since it doesn't *yet* have nav, it's only rumors at this point.

A Vette would suffice as well, but I've got 2 kid seats to think about as well.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
215 haaa i have more power in the SVX and I think they weigh the same too. :)

Maybe the C55 but I bet the street price would still be over $50K. Was looking at the M3 but thats well over $50k too.
