You wouldn't catch me in a FWD car. Other than that i really like the current STS, but the FWD kills it for me.

    QX56: great...another pimp-mobile for athletes to put 24" spreewheels on. Bling-bling!

Definition of "Heritage": the new word for Retro.

Bob - aren't you always commenting on how hard it is to update a retro design? What'll be next for them, then?

SSR is too heavy and too pricey, I bet it lasts no longer than the Prowler. At least it has a V8, speaking of heritage.

Early pics of the new STS look good. I like the new Caddy designs, FWIW. The exteriors more than the interiors, though.

Maybe the QX56 will be based off of Nissan's Pathfinder Armada the way the QX45 was off the current pathfinder.

Ditto Juice about the new caddys. They look pretty sharp.

Don't like the "ripple" effect on the hood of the new OB, but everything else looks good. Legacy looks better.

There's a big difference between 'trendy' retro/heritage and 'timeless' retro/heritage. The SSR, new Beetle, Prowler are all trendy, and will be out of favor before too long.

On the other hand something that is 'timeless' has staying power, and will be around for years. And yeah, it's hard to do it right.

Mercedes, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Volvo, Saab, BMW all are examples of timeless design. There current models are all visual direct descendents to their ancestors. This takes decades to do, and can't be done overnight.

    Trendy = short-term profits
    Timeless = long-term profits

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
How do explain Saab then? I dunno about "long-term profits" as they are pretty much out of biz and now just an extension of GM, same with Volvo on the Ford side of the house. Saab more-so IMHO though.

Saab is pretty tiny, but haven't they always been? They make Subaru seem big.

has far more to do with just styling, or names with a long lineage, but both are key elements.

to be slotted under the C-Class, and under $30K!

I don't get it, are the GST and CST 2 different vehicles? Or was the GST the concept, and the CST the production model?

Any how, for Subaru, there is an early benchmark for the 2005 SUW, with a competitive price.

The catch is the A class is tiny - I've seen them in Brazil. I wonder how big the CST will be.

    G'day

Funny but the A Class is actually larger inside than a C Class. Just different packaging.

    Cheers

Yeah, really tall, but shorter by far. I don't think that kind of styling would fly in the US, not at all.

Found this link over at nasioc. It's a very interesting new take on the internal combustion engine. I've never seen anything quite like this before. I'd say it's about as revolutionary as the Wankel engine, and in fact, there are many similarities, even though it's still a (boxer) piston design.

Very interesting, but I'd like a little more meat. The percentages are only so useful.

Show me a dyno chart. Show me BSFC and compare that to a two-stroke, four-stroke and rotary engines.

I think you need to contact those folks for that other more detailed info. That's all the info I've seen so far on this new engine concept.

    From their site:

As you can see by the video above, that we dyno trialled our 2001 Prototype last month to set up our new dyno test room. We are currently finalising our CCE2003-01 engine and are currently fitting it onto our dyno for tests and trials next month. After independent testing of this engine is completed, we will be publishing the test figures on our website and in the media. BTW, our first test results were better than what we expected! :-)

There are a lot of engines here that I thought had timing chains, but instead have timing belts. This PDF is a good reference tool.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Is that PDF accurate? If so, *none* of the Subaru engines are interference type. I thought some were?

But whoa, check out the G35 wagon on that same site, squared off back and all! Tons of room, acres more than the FX35, probably for less money. Too bad they couldn't style it more like the coupe's front.

Acura should do a TSX wagon, they already have it in Europe. I was gonna say that latter pic was a TL, but someone beat me to it.

Remember the TL concept from NY? It didn't have wipers. I can't tell if the production car has them or not (I'm sure it does).

    Anyone speak German? :o)

Is that the new S class? Mercedes has styling nailed down, all over BMW. It used to be the other way around.

You should see how many people are rushing to buy left over 5 series, I bet they have a sales surge this month or next.

    -juice
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
they'll go wherever the new 3 takes them. I though the E46 was unattractive compared to the E36, and the trend continues.

but the E46 sold very very well... so what do I know?

the 7 is awful and the new 5 as well.

    -Colin
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
E46 doesn't cross the line into Uglydome, though, like the 7 and now the 5.

Some were giving statistics that the 7 was selling better than its predecessor, but we found out that was due to a longer model year. Turns out sales are slower, and for a brand new model that's a disaster.

I was picking my kid sister up at the airport last night, and there was a Z4 on display next to a S2000 on the concourse.

Mind you, the Honda ain't much to look at, but Damn! That Z4 just plain looks WRONG, and the new 6-Series looks like it has hormone troubles.

The 1-Series really interested me until I saw that it's comprised of vehicles which appear to be bathtubs on wheels.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Wait, now I'm confused. So the photo is the new Acura TL, but is there going to be a new TSX introduced already?

  • himilerhimiler Member Posts: 1,209
I've heard rumours about an AWD TL, but nothing on an AWD TSX.

I'm not so sure Subaru outbid Peugeot... I'd be more inclined to think that he really did have his best success in Subarus.

    But who cares.

CAR magazine recently did a piece. I apologize, I simply cannot recall the details. But the gist was that WRC rules changes are going to make it harder for teams to run 3 works cars. Burns is not the #1 driver for Pug this season, so he may have to leave in order to ensure a seat, since the # of seats is dwindling in '04.

Funny if they accidentally put the truck V8 into that minivan! :o)

Next for Lexus: personality. I hear they may even try to add character in 2005! LOL

Looks like Ed doesn't have Cayennes on close-out yet.

The words in italic indicate '04 upgrades.

    http://www.collegehillshonda.com/pilot/overview.htm

Most important upgrade, IMO, is the 2nd-row seats now have a 100mm fore/aft adjustment, which means 3rd-row passengers could have about 4" more legroom if the middle-row seats are moved fully forward. This is a BIG improvement IMO.

If he loses he should run again, he could say, "I'll be back!"

Bob - that was your pet peeve with the Pilot, right? Honda was on the ball...

I liked it, but I dunno, I'd just get an Odyssey. Pilot doesn't feel sporty at all.

Yeah that was one of them. Now the 3rd-row seat can be made more adult-friendly, once the middle-row seat is moved forward.

Excuses or not, I got 'stuck' watching not only my 2 year old Brooke, but 5 of her cousins and 2 neighbor kids (all of which had their mom's in attendance at the party). *sigh*

And here I thought my own 2 kids were an armful to watch. Thank goodness the dewpoints dropped this evening - so all the kids could be outside. I can handle Brooke (and soon her brother Brogan) in our house, but 7 more kids inside and I go crazy! As my Grandma would say "Rousch-mitten" (sp?).
