My son is 16 and is one badge away from getting a palm now. Were you in Order of the Arrow? My husband's (he's also an Eagle) OA lodge disbanded 30 some years ago. He just joined our son's OA lodge. My husband is also working for his Wood badge, which is considered the equivalent of a PHD in Scout leadership. I think he's experiencing his mid-life crisis and is yearning for his youth.Of course, it could be worse, I suppose. ;-)

Yup I'm in the OA, here in SI. I've actually been camping at the place where the OA was started on the DE river near Lark's house!

I'm not expecting troops of Boy Scouts showing up in my neighborhood - not for a few years anyway!

Related note: I wonder if the Lumberville General Store and associated properties has sold yet. That'd make a nice compound for some racing team. Guess I'll have to take anotehr drive in the country to find out...

Karen to you and your son; and to Mike too. Achieving Eagle scout rank is quiet an achievement. I never made it that far, but I did become Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, FWIW. I was also a Webelos Leader when my son was in Cub Scouts.

But like Mike, just before turning 18... I made Life at 15 or so, and moved on to an Explorer post. About 4 months before turning 18 I suddenly woke up and realized I wanted it! Did 10 more merit badges & Eagle service project & board-of-review just under the wire.

Order of the Arrow (Buckskin Lodge - Nassau County Council).

In college pledged Alpha Phi Omega - the service fraternity associated with BSA - back when it was still run like a social frat (hazing pledges, etc.).

Ed - you live near TMR Scout Reservation? Loved that place...

OK, I guess if the topic won't die, I'll have to confess. I received my Eagle status when I was 13 - the youngest Eagle in Erie County up to that time (1960). I didn't become bad until much later.

Well, Dave, I own a Forester so I must be a lesbian, guess I could have been a female pack leader then! LOL

Hmm, I'm trying to remember, wasn't it Cub, then Wolf, then Bear? The patches you got on your uniform, that is. Eagle scout was beyond all those.

Both were on the back of a Ford F-Super Duty car carrier. Also included was a BMW 3-series sedan.

Even more strange, they were on some back country road here in Howard County Maryland, and not on I-70?!?!

    Really?

I kinda like the little roadster. If prices are reasonable, I'd consider one to replace the Miata down the road.

    Then again, maybe not.

Speaking of "alternative life styles"... was watching Clear Eye for the Straight Guy last night and I saw my very first locally produced Subaru Ad. It was definitely a niche market piece because all the males in the ad had a lot in common with the TV show's cast.

Subaru is very cutting edge, one of the few makers not afraid to market to the gay community.

Using Martina in their ads was a big step. I recall her commenting on how she didn't really get as many endorsement deals as lesser tennis players.

That show is funny. It's actually Queer, not Clear.

hee hee juice, just working off my "off" memory. It's just during my Cub Scout days, I think [trying to remember] all the female Boy/Eagle Scout mentors were addressed as Akela [being that Akela is a female character in the Jungle Book] and the male, Baloo.

My only recollection is Cub Scout graduates to Boy Scout, I guess Eagle Scout in North America. The Akela aka Wolf [2nd IC] and the Baloo aka Bear [OIC] are Boy/Eagle Scout, sort of mentors, charged to groom the Cubs to Boy/Eagle Scouts.

My recollection is that Wolf, Bear & Lion were Cub Scout ranks, and Eagle was the top Boy Scout rank.

as I recall, was for last year Cub Scouts who were about to transition into Boy Scouts. Cub Scouts was mostly about arts & crafts, and Boy Scouts was more about outdoor activities. Webleos kind of bridged that gap.

    Bob,

Those Swatch cars are very nice -- I saw them by the dozens over in Italy. However, I don't know if they would be allowed on US roads as-is. Maybe they were headed over to some rich persons estate as an alternative golf cart?

There are several groups actively working on becoming importers for these cars. I know one of the people involved, as he had two of the cars at Road America in July. Generated a lot of interest and at least 10 people were willing to put down a deposit there and then. Figured the price to be about the same as a Mini.

With the interchangeable body panels, one of them changed the car from red to green overnight in his garage. The neighbours thought that he had two of them in there, much to his delight.

With the 6 speed transmission in there, golf car it's not. Fast.

might as well hop on too, ;-) I believe I made it through the system (lol) up to the point just before becoming Eagle. I can't remember why I stopped though.

so I cannot tell you the ranks.

Ranks in scouting were: Tenderfoot / Second Class / First Class / Star / Life / Eagle

Positions were: Asst Patrol Leader / Patrol Leader / Asst Sr. Patrol Leader / Sr. Patrol Leader / Jr. Asst Scoutmaster / Asst Scoutmaster / Scoutmaster

I served one year as a Webloes den asst leader, (a bridge for 10 year olds between Cubs and Boy Scouts), and 3 years as an Asst Scoutmaster when I was in my early 20's.

After Boy Scouts there was Explorers (18 - 21 year olds - co-ed).

TMR is cool, been to Aquehonga(sp?) several times. The OA founders were actually on the lower deleware river between NJ and PA, not up near TMR on the NY/PA border. I believe it was called "Treasure Island" where the OA was founded an island on the Deleware.

I servered as Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader and my freshman year of college I was Assistant Scoutmaster. I keep wanting to get back into it, but I think most of the troops around here died out. I try to run http://TeamIAC.com as I did my troop :) Just no ranks, but the more "senior" members mentor the younger folks :)

I don't think they could price it up there with the Mini ($16-25k), maybe that's just me...

I guess it is a Benz derivative, sort of like the Mini to BMW relationship. Still, they are tiny. In terms of perception they might have to compete with Scion ($12-18k).

    Cub Scout ranks:

Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, Webeloes II. There was a Bobcat rank(not sure if it's still in there), but it's kind of lumped in with the Wolf.

Re: Venture Crew - My husband is working to get a Venture crew going in our community. He's hinting heavily for me to be a leader for the girls in the crew.

Patti mentioned in another thread that this was the best sales month is SOA history. They must be stoked, as they released sales for all models, with each state sales breakdown:

    http://vocuspr.vocus.com/VocusPR30/DotNet/Newsroom/Query.aspx?Sit- - eName=Subaru&Entity=PRAsset&SF_PRAsset_PRAssetID_EQ=68273- - &XSL=PressRelease&Title=Releases&Cache=False

Geez... Check out the sales in Alabama and Mississippi. Boy, do they need some help!

    Foresters up 22% 8-o
Those XTs must be selling like hot cakes :D

Wow, NY has the largest Subaru population.

    I guess that's good. I think they tested my Trooper in 2wd mode (of a 4wd truck) at 9.1s with a measly 3.5l V6.

Dropped out of the Boy Scouts. Never was in a fraternity. Went to college instead of 'Nam. Still own 3 Betamaxes and my computers are all think different. If I can't tilt windmills I can't have any fun as I sit here fondly recalling my vote for George McGovern in '72.

Hey, California is up there -- not bad considering the great weather we have out here!

The Forester has really become a key model for Subaru. Look at the figures -- it out sells the Impreza by 2X. The Forester is getting close to the Legacy sales figures.

Kansas isn't the worst, but it is pretty low. Seven total sales in Mississippi? wow.

    -Colin
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
And this is supposed to be SOA's best month ever too! I bet there have been some months in which no Subarus have been sold in Mississippi and Alabama.

DuneHawk looks pretty neat, that B-pillar is wild. It's nice and boxy, too. I hope they don't water it down too much.

I don't like all the new Nissans, but at least they aren't boring, far from it.

Bob - I'm not worried about 0-60 in something as big as an Armada. Still, that's 3 seconds quicker than a Navigator. I hope it has good brakes!

VT is tiny yet has 43 times the sales of Miss.

Keep in mind incentives are as high as every. $750 on Forester, $1250 on Legacy and Outback, $2000 on Baja. That certainly boosts sales. I just don't want to see them too addicted to incentives. Price them competitively to begin with, else resale suffers.

Juice, I think you mean the "C" pillar, but yes, I like it a lot too. I even like the name. The full-size Armada's "C" pillar hints of that design too, so I think it's safe to say we will see that on the mid-size Pathfinder replacement.

Did anyone notice which state has the highest percentage growth in Subie sales for the year? Not a New England state, Rocky Mountain state, or Pacific Northwestern state, but South Carolina. Yes, SOUTH CAROLINA. Highest percentage growth for August, and second highest for the year? Georgia.

I knew Subarus were good cars for the driving conditions faced there; now the numbers begin to reflect that.

Ed (grew up in SC, went to college in GA)
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
    Very strange...

South Carolina & Georgia show strong growth, while Mississippi and Alabama sales wallow in the swamps. Doesn't make sense...

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, I meant C, of course.

Performance sells, more so than AWD, in those places. I'm sure the WRX and XT are what sparked sales outside of traditional hot spot for Subies.

I'm sure sales will jump some more when the T-bo Legacy get on the road.

Anyone noticed a 200 unit jump on VA?

    -Dave
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Well, if you have pretty low volumes, any small unit increase would translate into a huge percent increase.

It would be interesting to hear from some of the people who bought Subies from those low-volume states. What motivated them to buy such an uncommon car in their area? How did they hear of Subarus? What did they cross-shop?

Ken- I think the sales increase in GA is largely due: to Atlanta's proximity to the Appalachians (you can reach the N. GA mtns in a little over an hour), the growing number of area residents who have weekend homes in said mtns, and a lot of transplanted northerners (many of whom own said homes) who better appreciate Subarus. Of course the WRX and XT have undoubtedly also won over some performance enthusiasts.

Juice- I agree regarding your fear of SOA becoming addicted to incentives. Of course it sure would be nice if they were available when I decide to buy that XT!

Just hold the line on pricing, add content. Add back the things they cost-cut for 2003: mud flaps, cargo liner (especially), and what was the 3rd item?

Now they offer $750 back and you spend about that much (half anyway) to buy the things they took out of it!

OK it finally happened. I got to drive a supercar. One of the programmers at the computer company where my wife works has an NSX, MDX and WRX. (He got the idea of having an all weather hot rod after hearing me rave about my WRX.) So we got invited to a party at his house tonight and before any booze had flowed I got to drive the WRX. Here are some thoughts:
    1. It fits. I'm 6' tall and the new premium package WRX would not cut it for me but I did not hit my head on the ceiling of the NSX. The power seat is very nice.
    2. It is a Honda clutch. I've driven nothing but manuals in my 34 years of driving and I killed the thing a couple of times trying to get it going.
    3. Did not go anywhere that really tested the handling.
    4. It is fast (DUH!) He let me take it out on a highway. I think it would have given me chills if I hadn't been driving a WRX for the last two years. As was I kinda got the feeling I knew what the thing was capable of. Not to say that it is not faster than the WRX.
    4. Big shock. LOUDNESS. The exhaust has a sound like a big block V8. (Something I've never owned but heard on many occasions.) That is the thrill as the thing slams you back against the seat at full throttle. It is literally a booming sound.

    WOW!

Thanks, Dave. It's cool, now we have 2 encyclopedias, Bob and Dave! :o)

Quick, what years and models got lit vanity mirrors? KIDDING, don't look it up!

Bruce: I thought you WERE talking about the WRX! LOL
