So far, nobody on freshalloy or g35forum has been able to find a receiver-style trailer hitch for a G35 (sedan or coupe).
Most threads claim that a hole would have to be cut through the bumper fascia for any kind of hitch to work. I've checked out the back of my coupe, and it sure looks that way. One thread mentioned a similar dilemma on one model of Corvette that was solved by a flip-up license plate! Clever, if true.
Boca, I compared the Passat against the G35 when I was shopping. I cruised the most popular forums for both cars. Near as I can tell, there were many more reliabilty complaints for the Passat. (I differentiate "reliability" problems from "build quality" problems) The Passat seems to give a much better impression of quality and build quality, but suffers more reliability issues. Glad you haven't had any problems with yours, but odds are you'll like the Infiniti, also.
On both cars, the majority of owners are having problem-free experiences, and are very happy with their cars. Reading these forums can be misleading, because they tend to be dominated by the people who have problems, (or by those people who think their car can do no wrong!) Statistically, it seems you are more likely to have fewer problems with an Infiniti (based on Consumer Reports and JD Powers). This seems to also be borne out by the anecdotal threads in the Passat and G35 forums.
You already seem to have a problem-free car, so you won the crap shoot once. (I assume that you don't have the 4 cylinder with the coil recall). There's always the chance that you'll jump to an Infiniti and have problems, but that seems to be a slim chance.
For what it's worth, there are a whole lot of G35 owners on the forums that have had problem-free experiences, many for more than a year. I've had my coupe for two weeks now, and the ONLY build-quality or reliablity problem that I have found is the drivers seatback doesn't automatically return to the correct angle after rear-seat access.
Here are some known "issues" with the G35 that you should be prepared to deal with. If they bother you, you might rethink: ** Brake life: Pads can wear out within 10,000 miles. You can switch to a long-life pad if this bothers you. ** Paint dings: the paint seems to be easily "dinged" by rock strikes. leaving a small mark in the paint. Other new car forums have also complained about this (particularly Acura and Mercedes), so it seems to be function of the new paint formulations rather than an Infiniti-only problem. ** A/C noise: some early sedans have noisy A/C compressors. There's a TSB fix for this under warranty. ITB02-056 ** Rocking Drivers Seat: appears on some early sedans. TSB under warranty. ITB02-80 ** Console scratching: The black console is more prone to smudge and scratch. Seems to be less of an issue (or non-issue) with the titanium or the willow. ** Driver's seat controls causing discomfort: not universal, but some people get pressure on the right side of their leg from the seat controls. There's a TSB fix for this that is just coming out, and it seems to help. ITB03-028.
forgot: premature wear of brake pads. This is occuring on G35's (and some other Infinitis) at 11,000 to 15,000 mi., despite better than normal tire wear (discounting that it's the driving style or driver). This is to the tune of 300 unwarrantied dollars, and frankly I'm p.o.'d about it. Others will be when it happens to them.
Thank you Mbednorz for a well orchestrated description of some possible trade offs for owning an Infiniti. The brakes are not much of an issue for superior braking. My Passat stops with no drama and after 19K they are still new. I'd rather have stopping power. The paint issue is somewhat bothersome but I don't do a whole lot of highway driving.(As long as the dings are not in the metal itself!) Again, my Passat paint is super. Not one blemish. The black console scratching I have resolved. I'm planning on getting a dark rosewood kit installed. It's between $300-$500 and makes the car(in my opionion) look somewhat richer.I have another question. I'm getting a black interior and live in Florida. Is the A/c a good unit? Does it blow cold enough and strong enough to offset the dark interior? Thanks for all your imput.
My 01.5 new v6 passat gls with indigo blue got me more attention that my G. The problem was I liked it and it was a lemon based on airbag and electical issues (that caused the airbag to fault out over and over). I was impressed with the buy back but customer service was pretty poor - corporate - not the dealer.
I would say if you are torn you prob dont need extra performance and you dont have the 190 hp unless you have updated model so stay with it man.
I love my G but was bummed the passat with some major refinement and great drivablity was so gone they bought it back. The problems VW has been having are a concern with coils and problems that many people are making public to the point the Wall street journal did a 2 page writeup last mo.
I would never drive either car especially a VW BMW past warranty. Passats all have issues after a certain point fairly soon after warranty. I was so adamant about getting mine repurchased mainly becasue each airbag issue was 500 bucks or more and I had the infamous 2/24 warranty. Too much exposure and the G was faster.
PS almost got another passat anwway - w8 wouldn't suck even though it's bottom of the class in that class and is overpriced at MSRP. only 10hp more than G and slower and heavier. AWD is a burden as well as AT in that car
"The brakes are not much of an issue for superior braking."
Yes, brakes should stop a car, and well. No, they shouldn't wear prematurely or be un-warrantied. See if it's not an issue when you replace yours and spend a lot of extra money in a short period of time. Who said they're "superior"?
Chrisboth, thank you for your imput.. I own a 2001 first version GLX Passat with of course the V6. The quality of the finish and interior seems to be superior to the G35 Coupe. However after 18K miles... My Windows(all of them) will not go down..and out of the clear start working. My retractable mirrors will retract during the car wash.. and then stay that way.. won't come back.. and then out of nowhere.. they are back.. Does this sound like electrical problems? the worst kind of "phantom problem" anyone needs.Obviously over time, this is not going away.Only getting worse and probably in other areas as well. Why do German cars have so many of these electrical problems? I don't see the same issues with the Japanese cars.I want the G35 Coupe for it's performance and reliabilty (mechanically)and of course looks. Although German cars (Volks, Bmw, Mercedes) have better interiors and craftmanship, they lose with mechanics in the electrics and many other areas.. Mercedes is in Big trouble these days.. They are making Hyundais! Looking forward to my purchase and thanks again for your opinions.
Bocatrip, I have a '99 GLX. I am planning on buying an Infiniti but I can't decide between the G35 and FX35. I realize they are so different. My Passat which has 44,000 miles has had the struts and ball joints replaced. The water pump was replaced. Last month the timing belt broke, that lead to new cams. I too don't fold the mirrors because they won't unfold. The cruise control doesn't always work. It took 5 service trips to get half-way decent AM reception. Now the brakes are squealing. If Infiniti would only offer more interior and exterior color choices.
I had my brand new G35 for just a month now, even though engine is awesome, but today the first problem happened, and it really irritated me. The driver's seat all of a sudden, just started making squicky noises. I did not have the radio on, and it was so disturbing, especially as I have the 6MT, the sport suspension, every little bump makes the seat have noises. I felt like I am riding a Semi, and the seats were taken out of the Semi. I took to the dealer, because I wanted him to hear it, even though they can only take it in next week. Well they can not take in earlier because they don't have a loaner. It is so frustrating, I did not expecta problem like this only in the first month, and now I have to drive a few hundred miles with this noise. Arrrgggghhh, I have to put the stereo volume to 15 not to hear the noise.
Did anybody have this problem? I never owned a Japanese car in my life, but though the quality was really good. My previous car was a Dodge, and I never had to take it to the dealer during the first 3 years of warranty period, that I bought it brand new.
Also, I was wondering if anybody is having problems with the shifter manual transmission. It seems like it rattles like crazy, I put my fingers on it while driving, and it is like having a rattle machine. My previous Dodge did not have the problem. I guess it is also part of the Japanese quality. I really doubt that I will buy a Japanese in the future. And with this seat problem, all of a sudden I say to myself I should have spent another 4K and bought the BMW 330.
If anybody is having the same problems or had the same problems with the MT shifter, and the seat, please let me know if it has been solved and how long it took for it to be resolved.
Just an update....Took my G35 in for service and squeaky brakes at 10K miles. I was told that the back brakes needed warranty work but the parts were on backorder (May 12th). I just got a call today (June 5th) from Infiniti telling me that they expect the parts for my back brakes to be in within a week or two. Not sure what parts are being replaced.
Just an update. I have 11k on my car. I took it in for an oil change and to find out how much front pad I have left. I've only used 1/10th of the pads. So good news. I guess I'm not blowing thru the pads like some people.
I am concerned about this issue. Do you have the Brembos or the normal ones? I usually have to replace front discs at about 30K and my dad and father-in-law say they should go longer. Others have said that it depends alot on the type of car. In general, I think I wear out brakes faster than most people.
I assume your asking me the question. I have the factory brakes. 65% of my miles are highway. The service advisor did tell me that I should expect to replace the rotors w/ the pad replacement 25k to 40k miles. These brake rotors are softer than non-performance types. Same w/ the pads.
Overall, I've been very pleased with my G and I have a great local dealer too.
You have exact the same car as I do minus the Nav. I have the normal brakes and rotors..not the Brembos. I bought the car with 6,600 miles on it. It needed new rotors (warping and rust) and the pads at 50% which sounds right if people are replacing at 12K. I made Infinity replace the rotors and I have to pay for long-life brake pads which are on order.
As my car is silver, the paint dings are difficult to see. Am detailing the car every three to four months to avoid future body rust.
The only way to really get a good paint job is to buy a Jaguar as they have a 12 layer paint process. Sad, but true.
My service advisor states there "may" be a recall soon regarding the brakes. Who knows? In any case, he is expecting a recall.
How do you like the Nav as I am considering adding this?
Mbednorz, thanks for posting the TSB's. They are very helpful!! It is nice to goto the dealer armed with exact information.
I don't have a G35 yet. I would like one but am holding out until this brake issue is resolved. I have a 1990 Ford Mustang GT Convertible. I have 122K on it and have never replaced the rotors. I have replaced the front discs every 30K and the back drums at 60K although this latest set of both has gone further. Actually I am also trying to put myself in a better financial postition before buying which will likely be in 3-6 months.
I'm hoping someone has some idea why my car doors will occasionally lock when I step out for a minute. I'm sure I'm not hitting any locking mechanism in the car and both times it's happened my keys were in the ignition. One time I was filling the car up and the gas cover opened meaning the car wasn't locked but when I went to open any of the doors, it was locked. I ended up calling the wife with the additional set. Previous cars I've owned wouldn't allow me to lock the car doors if the keys were in the ignition but take my word for it this one does. Help! I hope I'm just doing something wrong I don't know about.
I have the same problem. It's happened several times when I got gas. I believe the car has a feature that locks the doors automatically after 5 minutes. But I'm puzzzled that it does not do it all the time if that's the case. I leave the car unlocked when I go to Tim Horton's for coffee in the morning and it has never locked automatically, only when getting gas. I never realized it would lock itself with the keys in it - it makes no sense for it to be programmed that way. Fortunately, I always remove the keys whenever I am away from the car.
Have a sedan purchased in April 2002 and currently have 24,000 miles. Was at the dealership last week to have oil changed and I asked them to check the brakes. To my surprise they told me that both front and back have 75% left; have only used 25%. I would not say that I drive/brake extremely aggressively, but at the same time I do not "baby" the car. I was surprised that I have this much pad still left after reading all of the brake pad life issues here and on freshalloy. I have no idea why my brake pads appear to be holding up when others are reporting so many problems. Just thought I'd pass it along...
No offense, but I'm not sure I believe you regarding your brake pad wear. At any rate, if so, consider yourself very lucky regarding the brake pads. The fronts on mine (bought 3/02) were replaced after 11,000 mi. and the rears have 60 per cent left. You may say it's our driving, but my tires look like they have 5000 mi. of wear.
You may be, but I'm not a happy camper...mainly because it is not warrantied.
I just refilled my gas tank and was pleased with the 19 mpg that I got this time!!! After reading advice from several of you, I realized that all of my miles are very short distances, between 2 and 7 miles, each day. Well, I couldn't change that, but I did really start watching my gas pedal foot and eased into my takeoffs- which I found quite difficult, and I used 93 octane as usual. So I really proved to myself that it was the fact that I really like to drive the car the way it was meant to and I'll just have to live with a lower mpg. It's takes away all the fun to drive with a feather foot!!!
No offense taken. In fact, I did not believe the service advisor when he told me about the remaining pad life and I asked him to double-check with the tech who did the inspection. I made sure that he did not reverse the numbers, ie. that there was only 25% LEFT. He assured me that the tech told him 75% left. I did not really want to argue with them. I guess I could take a tire off the car and inspect them myself, but I don't know that I could accurately estimate the remaining pad life. I do not dispute that some owners are going thru pads at 10,000 miles and I would be irritated if I did as well. I was just passing on what I was told. don725 reports similar wear characteristics in his earlier post.
I believe I have read on other forums that some owners were/are successful in getting this covered under warranty. Have you tried? Unfortunately sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the proverbial grease.
I just had service done on my "G" that I purchased 04/02, 22,000 miles and was told my front pads had 35% left and rear pads are 50%. My dealer told me that they have replaced at many different mileages and that bottom line it depends on the driver. I also was going to have them replace my A/C Micron filter, since they said it should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year. The filter was out of stock, but my bill had price of filter listed...$122.95...I'm glad it only needs replacing once a year..
When I had my brake pads replaced no excuses were made, like... "it depends on the driver". As I previously indicated, my tires reflect considerably less wear than the same 11,000 miles which wore out the brake pads. As far as them giving (warranty) coverage, it was out-and-out refused, so I'd appreciate any info. you have on those successfully getting it covered. It has made me very disillusioned in the Infiniti marque and I've since decided against getting the Fx45.
I do not have any specific information on warranty coverage for the brakes. You might spend some time on freshalloy and use the search function. It's been covered at length over there. Again, sorry you have experienced these problems. Hope you find an acceptable solution.
I have spent some time looking up TSB's for the g35 and I found an interesting site. Lots of previous concerns are covered. The site is www.nhtsa.dot.gov/
I picked up my 03 G35 yesterday and began my new car ritual. This included trying the jack and checking the flat tire procedure. Has anyone used the jack yet. There are no jacking instructions posted in the trunk. Why did they bury the jack in the fender well behind the inner wall? There is plenty of room on top of the full size spare for the jack. Is there some way to disable the drivers' seat from going to the rear most position when the key is turned off? I don't realy need or like that option.
I have experienced two problems: 1)The back bumper seems to scratch very easily. Has anyone found a way to get the scratches out or make them less visible? 2) One of the motors in the seat, the back tilt adjustment is not moving in one direction. Has anyone had this problem?
I have used the jack. One morning one of my tires was flat as I picked up a big piece of glass that got caught between the tread. I was able to get the jack out, but couldn't get it back in after a few minutes of trying as it is almost impossible to see where to hook it. For your seat control, there is a switch to disable the automatic movement when you exit the car. You should see it around the seat memory buttons.
thanks for the memories buttons. Sorry I couldn't pass that one up. The jack must be completely collapsed in order for it to fit back in its' storage place. Once in position, twist the jack lever clockwise a few turns to lock it in place. Remember where the jack is the next time you hear strange thumping noises from that part of the car.
I just got word from Infiniti "Consumer Affairs" that a new recall has just been issued for some earlier sedans for a defective break light switch. Essentially, when you press the break pedal, the break lights DO NOT COME ON.
How charming
Please Infiniti, buy this car back before I have an accident or my right leg becomes permenently numb!
Hi, My sedan has a small coat hook attached to the passenger hand strap in the ceiling of the back seat behind the driver. I note that a few of you say that you don't have a hook. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the Info! I got pulled over because my rear brake lights were not illuminating. The police officer noticed my temporary tags (used '03) and was lenient. Infinity is taking immediate action and the car is going into the dealership tonight.
The recall will be sent on June 30, 2003.
Also getting the brake pads which finally arrived replaced under warranty. Some on the edmunds.com boards list the dealer will not replace these under warranty. The dealer should replace the rear brake pads as there is a TSB to eliminate brake squeal. I love how Infinity "words" the TSB in order to save themselves from legal issues. The true problem is the pads themselves and the squeal is just a symptom of the pad problem. They must run the TSBs through legal before issuing them?
Swimminglady,
Thanks for posting the url for: www.nhtsa.dot.gov/
It is, indeed, VERY interesting. One can print all the Infinity TSB's and recalls in order to approach the dealer in a an educated manner. It certainly is helping me and I am very thankful for your post.
I will cross-post this on the general G35 board in hopes it helps someone else.
The first time I used the jack I finally was able to get it back in the fender well. The second time I gave up after 15-20 minutes of trying, wrapped it in a towel to keep it from rattling, and stuck it in the cargo net. Was afraid to put too much pressure on it trying to put it back in the fender well for fear of denting the fender. Its an idiotic place for a jack!
I also see a lot of scratches on my bumper, and have no advice for that. As for the seat, I had a similar problem from the beginning. When I tried to raise the seat up or down, the right rear side never moved. I eventually took it in and the right side was not completely seated in its rail. Not too sure, but they could not have been good in a serious accident. It took a few days and an engineer to come on site, but it was fixed. I would have the dealership check it out just to be safe.
I have also had my brakes replaced. I was "lucky" it was not until about 19,000 miles, but by then they had to replace the rotors too. After several calls to Infiniti Consumer Affairs, the entire job was done at no cost. But you have to follow up, because the response to the first phone call was a very firm "Sorry, due to the high performance, soft brakes, this is the expected life of the brake pads". Only after calling back and complaining more did it get taken care of.
Wallyg35: Are you talking about the In-cabin Microfilter? The MSRP, as listed on the Infiniti accessories website, is only $29.30.
By the way, I just took delivery of my G35 Coupe yesterday: Brilliant silver with graphite leather interior, automatic, premium package, and trunk mat. I'm in the D.C. area. MSRP was $34,415 and I paid $33,898.54 plus tax and tags, no processing fees. I would not purchase again from this Infiniti dealer in Rockville, M.D. due to their lack of customer service and lack of concern for the customer, but it was the only one available in the area. I love the car more and more every time I look at it. Unfortunately, Due to a recent knee injury I wont be able to drive it for at least a month!
My only concern is paint chips and scratches. I've heard about the option of having a film installed over certain areas of the vehicle that may protect the paint from chips. Does anybody have any knowledge of this? Also, Upon delivery my salesman mentioned insurance for my tires/rims. He did not provide any further information, though. Anyone know anything about it?
Tom

brake pads and rotors. Can you tell me who you talked to from Infiniti to have them cover it for you? I was the one who replaced rotors at 15,500 miles and have "40 per cent" remaining on the rear rotors, yet my tires have worn "like 5000mi". They refuse to cover this.......outrageous!
Infiniti covered my front brakes and rotors replacement. The service advisor called Infiniti right then and there after I complained. I told the service advisor to "put my car back together" because I was leaving if Infiniti didn't pay for the work. He told me the car was not safe to drive. According to the technician, I had no front brakes left. My G only had 9700 miles on it! Good luck!
What does is mean if these lights come on one time, but after turning the car off and then back on, the lights are off and stay off? If I have a brake problem, would the lights stay on all the time? BTW it was raining when the lights came on. Thanks!
If your slip, VDC, and brake lights come on, call your dealership for an appointment. My lights went on and off at first, but then they stayed on all the time. At first, the dealership thought it was just a computer glitch- something that just needed to be reset. If your brakes do need to be replaced, insist that Infiniti pay for the work. Don't let them tell you that your driving style is to blame. BTW, the slip light can come on when the wheels detect wet pavement.
My service manager suggested I call the Infiniti Consumer Affairs. I don't have the number, but you should be able to get it from your dealer. On the first call, they apologized and said there was nothing they could do. They explained that it was the "high performance, soft brakes" and that it was the expected life of the brakes. After I told the service manager what they said, he said to try again. I called again the next day ready to fight and the rep was very nice. She said she would talk to our service manager. He called us 30 minutes later and said the whole job would be covered as a 1 time thing. So, I think the key is to have a good service manager who is willing to say that the brakes shouldn't go out that early.
My rotors were ruined because I ignored my VDC, SLIp and brake light for 2 days. That is the big indicator. If you see those 3 lights, get into the dealer quick. It is about a $250 brake job, but double if you need new rotors. They were too far gone to turn, and that was partially my fault for not getting it checked quickly.
Has anyone else had any problems with their Bose 6 CD stereo? In 3/03, I tried to play one of my CDs and got an error on the display. I could not play or eject any of my CDs. It took 3 months to get my replacement(not sure if that was a Bose issue, or an order issue at my dealership). Now I have to wait another 2 weeks for the Bose guys to get my CD out and mail them to my Infiniti dealer.
P3104/ITB03 addresses your issue. Many G35s have issues with the Bose Circuit boards. Bring these codes to the dealer and they should replace the Bose circuit board.

had 35% left and rear pads are 50%. My dealer told
me that they have replaced at many different mileages
and that bottom line it depends on the
driver. I also was going to have them replace my
A/C Micron filter, since they said it should be
replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year. The
filter was out of stock, but my bill had price of
filter listed...$122.95...I'm glad it only needs
replacing once a year..

1)The back bumper seems to scratch very easily. Has anyone found a way to get the scratches out or make them less visible?
2) One of the motors in the seat, the back tilt adjustment is not moving in one direction. Has anyone had this problem?

How charming
Please Infiniti, buy this car back before I have an accident or my right leg becomes permenently numb!
My sedan has a small coat hook attached to the passenger hand strap in the ceiling of the back seat behind the driver. I note that a few of you say that you don't have a hook. Hope that helps.
