Sorry if there were any spelling mistakes, I was trying to do this in between appointments.
Hope this helps everyone out there.
Also, at least for this region, the first allocation will be only ONE sienna for each dealer in our region and the rest will be allocated for the begining of April.
One thing I forgot to say is that packaging may be VERY different from region to region, so what I see here may not be and probably is, not what other regions in the country are going to see.
So at least in this first allocation of Sienna, no, they won't be, but that may change and in other areas, they may very well be differently equipped.
So it would appear I can not get VSC on a 8 passenger LE? That can't be correct. I hope this is not correct.
I am very disappointed on many safety features are not standard on the LE. I think it is a way to keep the base prices low making the vehicle look very attractive and then Toyota hits you over the head with options. Sounds like the Big 3 approach.
From your info,it looks like only XLE Limited with HF Limited #5 package will have navigation system(hidden in the DVD package). So not every XLE Limited will have navigation? or will they,in effect, only really build them with this #5 package. Thanks again
Mainly, the same thing then the other ones, but they really like the Sienna. Here is the part about the tile-telescopic steering:
"A striking example of Toyota’s resultant efficiencies at work in the Sienna is the base model, the CE. Consider the following. On the base CE model you get as standard equipment, power windows, dual sliding doors with power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, 4 wheel ABS brakes with EDB (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), tilt-telescope steering wheel, an audio system with 6 speakers and both CD & cassette, 7 passenger seating with 2nd row captain’s chairs, 3.3 liter V6, 5 speed automatic transmission with overdrive and last, but not least, 10 cup holders. You take all this combined with a nice-looking body and Toyota’s track record of building very high quality vehicles and price it at $22,900, and you’ve got a package that makes buyers happy and competitors sad."
Thanks for the info on package selections. Do you have any idea if you can get an XLE with both NAV and DVD entertainment systems? Are these items considered options outside the package contents?
Also, I didn't see any mention of memory seats. . that's unfortunate - especially for those who will fork out 36K-ish for a limited.
Also, is it true that dealers don't even get to select their inventory of new Siennas? They actually have to accept whatever Toyota throws at them? If that's true how in the world will we ever find exactly what we're looking for?. . .
On Toyota's "Brains on Board" website, clicking on "Functionality On Board", then "Convenience" they show the power sliding doors as "Dual" and standard on the XLE and XLE Limited. Nothing is shown as "available" for the CE or LE. I took that as... NOT available.
Now with that said, it seems like a crazy strategy from Toyota to me. The doors on imports open and close so easily that power doors even on an XLE seems unnecessary. Where I would find power doors useful is with a newborn/car seat baby in hand or a small child entering that would cause you to have to close and re-close for them. Don't you just love getting out to close a door because your afraid your kid will either knock it off the track or never quite close it? Our 4 have finally passed that stage so this would have been nice 5 years ago. What is odd is that this feature is not available (according to Toyota's site) on the 2 models that feature the 8 passenger (child seat in the middle) configuration. Go figure...
That is what I was basing my information on. Let me know if you have contradictory info. Sorry no web link but I don't think you can link past the "BOB" home page: (Jack you probably can because you are the man!)
Ken what the heck is laminate green shade glass? Is it different than sun screen glass? Without this option will the rear windows be un-tinted? Cruise control also seems like a weird option on a vehicle that comes with so many extras standard, ie, cd player, key less entry etc. The EVP #1 on the 2003 is under a grand, do you expect this will be the case for 2004?
I'm going to reach for straws here and say that that most likely the DVD Navigation will be an option for models and most likely not standard on any model.
PS Remember that Ken said this is preliminary and only specific for his region. Let's don't jump to conclusions yet. Also, remember these are packages. There will probably be individual options available too. Stayed tuned.
You're correct in your observation. I just looked at the printed Brains on Board brochure and there is no mention of it. A good guess would be to say that its standard on XLE/Ltd but maybe optional on LE. I couldn't imagine that being "not available" on the LE.
Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance and I couldn't post a link.
Thanks for the link. We were aware of the rampvan conversion. If possible, we are hoping that we can use the regular Sienna with a hoist-type lift. This will allow us to carry the wheelchair/scooter and have the usual ground clearance and front and 2nd-row seating. However, having the rampvan available if we should need it is great. We may also explore a limited conversion if the disappearing 3rd seat interferes with installation of the hoist. The current Honda Odyssey doesn't work because of the seat well and lack of a flat, solid floor in the rear. Thanks.
In terms of our desired level of available luxury on the Sienna or any minivan, we just think it strange that there are no luxury choices. I am sure that there are others who must have or want the convenience and utility of a minivan and the features and ride of a Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, etc. Such a van just doesn't exist. The XLE Limited sounds like it will be nice to a point. We are just disappointed that Toyota didn't take it past that point or hand it off to Lexus for a more luxurious model. IMHO there is such a market out there. Maybe one day Toyota/Lexus or another manufacture will see that.
BTW - I still think the lack of a power passenger seat in the XLE or XLE Limited is a mistake. A $40,000 vehicle needs such features.
If the past is anything to go by yes there is a definite differnce in the texture/fabric of the seats. our 87 camry LE comes with a "plusher" fabric compared to our 00 Sienna CE. Also the LE had adjustable (fwd & aft) head restraints. The 87 had some very neat features that cars today might not have mist feature: pull the wiper stalk once and the wiper cleans the windshield without spraying washer fluid. Very neat.
Even on the Lexus LX470, the Navigation system and the DVD Entertainment system are optional packages, not standard. Therefore, it would be a safe bet to say that Navi & DVD will NOT be standard on any Sienna models. I just hope we can even get Navi+DVD as an option on any of the 8 passenger models! I know that Honda does not offer both Navi AND DVD on any of the Odyssey models--it's one or the other, but not BOTH NAVI + DVD Entertainment.
As I stated above, this is only information regarding the way that models coming to this particular region (NY) are going to be equipped in the first allocation. From what it looks like with some of the packages being number 12 or more, there will be ALOT of different combinations avaialable. As to whether those packages will be available to all regions all of the time, that is unlikely. We have NO specific pricing information on different trim levels or equipment as of yet. I will try to get that to everyone as I get it.
As for specific safety equipment on different trim levels, if the option is available, even if it is not something that is normally built on the vehicle, you may be able to order one. I will warn anyone that is looking into this, that this is a VERY time consuming process, sometimes taking up to 6 months and very well may not be possible for a while after the inital launch.
As for the question about the green laminate glass. I would guess that it is the same type of glass they use on most of their vehicles, but want to specify it as not having "privacy" glass where it is not. Again, if it is the same glass they use on most other Toyota's the side and rear windows will filter 100% of UV A and B rays and the windshield will filter 95% or more of them as well.
For some models, such as the CE and in some respects to the LE, they don't include some options to have the base price under a certain price point. That being said, the 2003 model didn't even have power windows and locks in its base price and the new model even without the cruise is still starting out less expensive in its initial base price. For the LE model, they are unlikely to make too many with expensive options like VSC and the like as they are still targeting that model towards people staying within a budget who still want most other standard features. And as I said earlier, it may very well be avaialble, I just don't know as of yet.
As for the question about dealers and their inventory. They allocate a certain number of each vehicle, typcially built in standard configurations to the whole region. Of that allocation, each dealer is allotted a certain number of vehicles from that allocation based upon their most recent sales, current inventory, and projected sales. I am not going to get into a whole dialogue about Toyota's "just in time" production system here, but if you want to do some research, that is what it is based on. When the dealer gets their allocation, they have a little bit of lee-way in that they can occasionally change the colors, or the option packages that it has on it based upon the overall allocation within the district. So in a nutshell, for the most part, the dealers do not have alot of say in what vehicles they get and what is on them, especially for high-demand vehicles.
I hope this answered most questions, and I'll keep checking to see if there are any others.
Would you mind telling me if you work at Toyota or at a Toyota dealership? You seem to speak with authority & direct knowledge about the product so it would be helpful to know what your role is or where you are getting your information.
Well, as we are not allowed to solicit business here on edmunds, I do not list where I work specifically. I work in the Buffalo, NY area in a local dealership. I started selling Toyota's about 10 years ago. I try to keep up-to-date with the latest information available about Toyota most specifically, but as much as possible about the industry in general. As you can probably tell, I don't have a problem saying that I don't know the answer to a question if I don't. What I do, however, is to find the answer out if possible. I also am not a fan of not delivering something that I promise. So very frequently, you will see me give answers like, "it can take as long as...", or "What is likely to happen is...". Some of the answers I give on the boards here are based upon my personal experience with Toyota, while others are from literature or documents directly from Toyota. I do not represent Toyota or the dealership I work for in any direct or indirect way in the responses that I post on this site. This is something that I do in my free time, hopefully to help consumers get more complete and accurate information about the products that I am most familiar with.
I hope this explains where I get the information I get and whether or not it is accurate or not. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Ken...I'm just over the border in Toronto. I'll be going to the Toronto Auto Show in 2 weeks and will see if I can get answers there to any "Canadianized" questions about the 2004 Sienna.
Thanks Deepan - I have a feeling that there will be a "quality of materials" difference... Being a person that has long believed in "you get what you pay for" - if I go down the Toyota route I will be struggling between the CE and LE. The less that $23000 number is almost too good to be true, however, I would really like get the HVAC filter (they do work!). I just don't want to see the base price of an LE jump to $26000 because of (basically) four additional items on the LE and NOT on the CE: front passenger seat folds flat, Driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, HVAC filter, and Obstacle-detection sensors with "pinch protection" on power slide/rear hatch. I am rather practical with vehicles. I really don't need the power doors (my kids are old/strong enough to open/close it themselves). The other three are "nice to haves"...
Anyhow... Six weeks from tomorrow! Gosh - I would really like to sit in one of these ahead of time?!?!?!

Aren't the majority of minivan owners families w/2 or more children? When you have a lot of kids it sort of drains the pocketbook. Not only that, but you don't want the really nice stuff because the kids might destroy it, LOL. So maybe there just aren't enough prospective minivan purchasers who are looking for luxury vehicles to make it a worthwhile product for the time being.
a few years ago we had one of the first batchs of Siennas made and really enjoyed it. The dash squeek and door jingle was a commpn problem. We needed 4wd as we live in the county and like to go skiing. Only town and country was choice and spending upwards of 38k for a van was silly 3 years ago. Our ml has been great, but we miss the van. Wife does not like the stigma of minivan mom.
Luxury vans just did not come to fruition. I thought Volvo would have been all over it with saftey and utility. But The suv craze took over as gas prices fell further.
THe limited version of this van goes beyond the LXE version and into Lexus type goodies. A lexus would only add more sound insulation and a slightly reworked dash with nicer buttons. IT would still have same drive train. Marketing costs could not justify such a model, as it would be low volume. I also think there is a price point in which few will go with a Minivan.
Jack,
Vs Pacifia. Price will most likely be similar, in the Limited awd version most likely is where the comps start looking more "apples to apples". Size wise, I am sure the cabin forward design of a van would make for better use of space than Pacifica.
The Sienna has the drive train advantage with those great motors and a 5 speed over 4 speed tranny. Pacifica is a more image concious vehicle that reeks family utility with more style. IM not dissing the sienna, but the Pacifica won't be a "MINIVAN".
Funny, when we write down all that we want the Sienna AWD limited has most of everything we want, except Its a "MINIVAN".
I look forward to sitting in both. The sienna is a hell of a package and should give Chrysler a run for the money. They matched them in most areas and exceed with proven toyota quality (we hope). They will capture a big share of the market with this. Toyota will have two years until Chrysler and HOnda redue theirs. Then they will have the best package. That is how it works.
Chrylser has like 40% of the minivan market.
Your chart vs. Sequioa was interesting. In usable space and economy, its a slam dunk. Sequioa is a great truck, and if you need towing, then is a no brainer.
I've been working hard this morning trying to get this update to everyone.
Here's the scoop when I came into work this morning someone had contacted me via email and then later via fax with some updated material. I've already gotten it posted at the website in both charts posted here previously. Click link below my signature to view.
This new/updated information came in the form of a 4 page Toyota flyer. There were some comparison numbers and standard/optional equipment. The person who sent it to me is going to an event held by Toyota next month and will hopefully be able to provide us with some more details if we haven't gotten it yet.
Some highlights of the info received: 3,500-lb towing capacity no power door option on CE only one power door on LE and it's optional Sunroof/curtain airbags optional on XLE DVD navigation is late availabilty !! darn
Please remember that none of this info is concrete yet until they hit the lots!
The updated info is in red. Also, remember the chart is best viewed with internet explorer b/c of the fonts I used.
Point for point all your statements are true. Couldn't agree more. Can't wait to see your comments after sitting in both. Maybe I was a little hard on the Pacifica but I didn't see it in Detroit until after seeing the Sienna.
Can't get too off topic here b/c the "boss" is back! :0 And besides I've made so many new friends here in last few weeks that I'm sure they would hate to see me get the boot like some of our other posters from a couple of years ago.
Thank you so very much for all the work that you do for us here. I was about to ask if dual sliding doors would even be an option on the LE, but you answered it before I asked. Thanks again!
Take a look at how they equip XLS avalons. It is almost impossible to get an XLS avalon without Leather interior. We'll have to see once they release more complete information on pricing and equipment.
Another 5 pages just hit the fax. I now have codes etc. This is going to take some time. Be patient will I'll put this together. I may have to scan and post these.
Initial indication suggest that bulk of first months production will be LE 7 passenger models (33%), XLE 7 passenger (34%), followed by LE 8 passenger(17%), LE 7 pass (5%). No indication of XLE Ltd 7 pass FWD or AWD in first batch. Only 4% XLE Ltd AWD will be available (12 units). Only 290 units for February build.
Boy would I love to be a fly on the wall come Mar 14th to see some people fighting over first dibs on these babies.
Colors are now recorrected from this morning. All original colors are in fact available.
I've been reading all of your posts and may have missed this. I need a new van asap, but am willing to wait to get the '04 Sienna instead of the Ody, if it will be available this Spring. Do you know the release date? The local dealer seemed clueless and said August. Do you anticipate that it will be hard to get one w/ AWD? I'm in the DC-metro area. Thanks for your help!
Bargamon, Like you I have one from the first batch of Sienna and the Mercedes ML. Have the same dash squeak and the sliding door problem with the Sienna but still loved it and it was extremely reliable. The ML was in the shop a gazillion time for all sorts of minor annoyance. There was never a major problem with the ML until recently when the engine stall twice on the highway in a month. First they change all the spark plugs then they replace the catalytic convertor an I'm not sure if they know exactly what was the problem, now the center bearing also needed to be replaced, thank god I have the extended warranty. My preference have been one SUV and one minivan in the family, therefore my initial thoughts was to keep the ML and trade in the 1998 Sienna for the 2004. Now I am thinking keeping the 1998 Sienna and trade in the 1999 ML for an AWD 2004 sienna minivan. We love to ski too but because of the engine problem I will be driving the sienna with snow tires to the ski hill this weekend instead of the ML. With the availability of AWD ,side curtains, stability control etc. the lure of an SUV is much less now. Sequoia and 4runner is also on our mind but we don't tow and dosen't go off road. I can't afford to change two vehicle at the same time. I know I'll end up with two minivan but I guess that's life. What do you think?

You have LE 7 passenger models down twice, once w/33% production indicated and the other 5% production... is one of those supposed to be CE 7 pass? If so, which one? I'm hoping it's the 33% number!
I wonder what late availability means? I am looking for an XLE or XLE limited with either VSC and AWD or just AWD but definitely want a NAV system and possibly the video. I would like it for the summer vacation in late June. I wonder if this combination will be available by late May early June.
After experiencing a nav system twice within the last 6 months I want it also. But if it comes down to choosing DVD Nav or DVD Entertainment that's going to be tuff but probably the DVD Entertainment. Hopefully, Toyota won't put us through that like Honda did.
We have the 2000 ml because of the 1400 improvemnts for that model year. Mostly addressed the issues of 98 and99 models. We love the truck and its been an excellent performer. Given that, its on a 39 month lease and while I am a big Fan of the make, I don't want 2 of the them out of warranty. I have an 01' E-430 with 30k, so for us its one sedan and one truckster. If the ML will keep killing you, then I guess you know the answer. The ML 58k is aging very well and we though of buying it out, but its just not enough room. We hardly use the 3rd row, but wife says she wants a 6-7 seater. Its her car! We are also afraid of the repair on the mL and it just may be time to say good bye on a good note.
When the sienna was about 60k I just felt it was coming undone a little. I am a rattle freak, I hate them. I wonder if the new version is much tighter in the flex of design. The door thing was really annoyingm and if the Van got cold the dash would squeek.. It was the air vents and they had service reports about it and how to fix it. But they never did. I really hated the seat, it gave me and my wife problems on long trips, The ML seat is great. I swear that first sienna had leather over fabric. I doubt that had anything to do with it. I hope the new one is not a problem.
Jack, I did not notice payload spec? Think we can get it to 3 tons?? Having a Limited version is essential to my business! Yeah right!
With a DVD I can do seminars in the Van!
I have until july and ML leasing says we can go month to month. Gives me time to evaluate and inventory to build.
Each dealer nationwide is scheduled to get one on March 14th. After that the initial allocation of siennas is scheduled to get to the dealers the first week of April.
You are awesome, your webpage is great!!! Thanks for the info on the powersliders. Now all we need is PRICE!!!!
Ugh... I have to return my lease on April 30. I hope I find the Sienna I want and get it by then!!! I am pushing it.
Does anyone think it is a good idea to give my name and # to all of the surrounding Toyota dealers and have them call me when they get them in or know what they are getting?
What is everyone's thoughts on getting this van for under msrp? Not gonna happen, huh? Do you think we can use the Odyssey against the Sienna to haggle pricing? Do you think we'll need to?
Wow, I've been off the site since 10:00 this morning and bang, two complete pages of additional info! Thanks Jack and Ken, you've stirred up quite a commotion today.
Ken: I don't see the link to the fax on your Web site. Would you mind explaining how to get there?
Like you I'm disappointed at the possible late arrival of the NAV. Not sure what I'll do if I have to wait past spring to get one. I have to think Toyota will offer both DVD & NAV together, but if they don't I'm afraid I'd have to take it off the list (even as badly as I want one).
Also, several folks mentioned that you can only get the Odyssey with either NAV or DVD Ent system. That's actually incorrect - the dealer will install the DVD Ent System into an EXL-NAV Odyssey. And at $33K for the EXL-NAV & DVD, that's still pretty good.
I keep going back and forth, hoping Honda will announce something soon. The suspense is killing me.
Oh, OK. That brings me to my next question. Where are the CE's? The ones with the incredible base price? Hmmmmmm... good thing I don't have to make a final decision til October.
Edited to add: OK, I looked at the fax page. I see there are no CE's slated for February. 290 total out of the proposed 120,000 isn't a lot is it? Guess I might have to wait a bit. I do live in an urban center w/lots of Toyota Dealers, but I'm afraid the competition will be too great to get a good deal early on. Thanks again!
Thanks for all of your hard work! I really appreciate it.
Cat- That 290 is for a specific region not the entire US as I previously posted. Not sure what region, have a hunch, but don't want to reveal too much about my source.
lachancs- Ken didn't post the fax I did. So much posting today I can see where the confunsion can come in. Click my link and its under the production info posted tonight....oh what the heck...go directly here:Faxed Info
It's been and unexpected busy day today so off to catch up on some TV...
Jack, I was just wondering what are your resources, for all the information you get. Like this fax. Also, when do you think I can get a Sienna with DVD Navigation System and Entertainment System. Is there anyway that I could get it pre-ordered in March and expect an April delivery? If you or any Town Hall Member can answer this question, please do so. Also, If you were to rate your Sequioa, how would you rate it. Because I am also giving the Sequioa some consideration. I really hate my '01 Ody and want to replace it.
I must assume that this is specific to some dealer... I was a little suprised to se no CE... Oh well...
Given our new wealth of information, can anyone explain the difference between "HVAC Push Buttons" and an "HVAC Filter"?
Again... Way Cool!

I've also answered one of my questions...auto express windows. It's only on the driver window.
Zoomed in on the XLE Ltd interior posted at the pressroom and saw it for myself.

So at least in this first allocation of Sienna, no, they won't be, but that may change and in other areas, they may very well be differently equipped.
Ken
Thanks for compiling that data.
Cheers

If that's true how in the world will we ever find exactly what we're looking for?. . .
-Steve
For unc8185: the link on http://pressroom.toyota.com/photo_library/*ws4d-db-query.ws4d?ws4- - - d_nav=true&Condition=is&Database=[Wieck_photos]&kw=si- - - enna%202004&index=fulltext&source=nosource&RecordsPer- - - Page=4&BreakTable=4&page=6&grid=8&Results=results- - - _JPG.html&Results-1-Record=results(r)_JPG.html&Results-Ta- - - ble=results_JPG.table&ws4d-database-submit=Searchshows shows a Sienna customized for handicap access. It is even sharper looking than the regular XLE. If that is not "luxurious" enough for you, then I think Lexus should build a minivan for that market. My opinion is still that I am impressed with the variety of choices, features and levels of luxury that Toyota is offering. Anything above the Ltd. is not Toyota's target market.
Can't wait...Please Be Cheep 04 Sienna!
Thanks for all the great info.

PS Remember that Ken said this is preliminary and only specific for his region. Let's don't jump to conclusions yet. Also, remember these are packages. There will probably be individual options available too. Stayed tuned.

Thanks again
Seb
mist feature: pull the wiper stalk once and the wiper cleans the windshield without spraying washer fluid. Very neat.
I just hope we can even get Navi+DVD as an option on any of the 8 passenger models! I know that Honda does not offer both Navi AND DVD on any of the Odyssey models--it's one or the other, but not BOTH NAVI + DVD Entertainment.
Ken
I hope this explains where I get the information I get and whether or not it is accurate or not. Hope this helps.

Some highlights of the info received:
3,500-lb towing capacity
no power door option on CE
only one power door on LE and it's optional
Sunroof/curtain airbags optional on XLE
DVD navigation is late availabilty !! darn
Please remember that none of this info is concrete yet until they hit the lots!
The updated info is in red. Also, remember the chart is best viewed with internet explorer b/c of the fonts I used.

Thanks for your help!
Like you I have one from the first batch of Sienna and the Mercedes ML.

The excitement builds!
Here's what I have:
LE 7 pass.: 33%
LE 8 pass.: 17%
LE 7 pass AWD: 5%
XLE 7 pass.: 40%
XLE Ltd pass. AWD: 4%
Total 290 units for February
Doesn't equal 100% probably b/c of rounding.

Hope this helps.

Edited to add: OK, I looked at the fax page. I see there are no CE's slated for February. 290 total out of the proposed 120,000 isn't a lot is it?
Thanks for all of your hard work! I really appreciate it.

If you or any Town Hall Member can answer this question, please do so.
Also, If you were to rate your Sequioa, how would you rate it. Because I am also giving the Sequioa some consideration. I really hate my '01 Ody and want to replace it.
