Here the scooters are electric. The CDC just started a study on the safety of all these electric scooters. I can't imagine that the results will be favorable.

These were the kind that kids use, where you stand on them with one leg and push yourself along with the other. Except the people using them weren't kids.

Gif is named "cardog" and the movie wasn't friendly to either. Still funny tho.

Not to mention what happened to Dinkums...

A couple sightings at A-C-D this time:

First, another Zephyr, this being the three window coupe variety that might be the most desirable style:

    And something fairly obscure:

Wow; I've never seen that Scout before. Man, if they would have built that? It would have felt so futuristic for 1979, particularly in that class.

Not a spotting really... but remember when there was some "stock" in stock cars? How 'bout them fins :)

  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Looks like a 60 Ford leading the pack, followed by a 60 Chevy and then 60 Plymouth rounding out the top 3.

I'll take Lee Petty in the 43. :)
I have to take it back, it's Richard.
Could be Darlington, Ned Jarrett drove the Courtesy Ford in that race and finished just ahead of Richard Petty.

Back in the day when there were some actual brand differences in the race cars. I liked NASCAR much better back then personally.

Now on to NATMUS, adjacent to A-C-D in Auburn, IN. There's quite a truck collection in the basement, here's another International with a period banner:

And upstairs, a Futureliner (very hard to photograph):

Sweeet! Both of those are fantastic!

A high school friend had a mustard yellow International Scout eerily similar to the one pictured. Quite a hardy little beast!

When I was a student in the late 90s, someone in my apartment complex had a Scout diesel. I remember it being a bit smoky.

Yikes. Ya, diesel in those days was a whole different animal. That said, I suppose one could say the same thing about gas engines!

Nothing I hated more than following a smoky diesel. Much worse that gassers of the day.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
I remember this thing would let out a cloud, worse than any old MB diesels I know. Can't recall the last time I noticed a Scout diesel, that might have been the last one I saw. There are still a few Scouts running around here, now sunny day Sunday driver special interest cars, I think.

I still hate it! I sniff diesel fumes from full-size trucks regularly. Not that they need to spew that crap, but apparently de-regulating your big diesel is the thing to do. I missed the memo.

There's an inbred "rolling coal" movement out there that has probably done as much or more to harm diesel image than dieselgate. I know some legislation has been made against it, but I suspect enforcement is very lax. I see some awfully stinky 21st century diesel pickups on the road even here.

I don't believe that is Ned in that Ford. It's number is 26, and I think Ned ran #11 for most of his career. I'm not sure who would be running 26 in 1960.

Fun memories. My Vega burned oil badly. A friend was following me and I noticed he had his headlights and wipers on. It wasn’t raining. He said I was fogging him out!

Now on to the Henry Ford. What better to be seen at the Ford museum than an Accord (first Ohio-built car, I think). These things can still be seen on the road here now and then:

And a bus, the Rosa Parks bus. The exact bus from history, you can even walk in and sit in it:

For obscure cars today, saw a tin top Samurai in evening rush hour traffic, and just saw an early Cougar drive off a cliff on CHiPs, it didn't explode, wow.

I think it's rather tastefully done for what it is. Someone could have done a Full Vegas on it.

On to Gilmore. I call this one "design purity", 1934 Airflow is best Airflow:

This design is 25 years old now, old enough I guess:

I like the Airflow. They could have done better with the lights, but the rest of the design fulfills its name designation.

Headlight/fender integration was still in an experimental stage. The amazing Tatra 77 had a similar look in early iterations (yes, that's an air intake behind the sunroof, for a rear mounted V8):

    image

This is at the same time as the Airflow, concurrent evolution.

Compared to a 34 Chevy, it must have been like looking at a Buck Rogers spaceship:

    image

The two door Airflow is even more flamboyant than the sedan in its roundedness:

The VII was certainly more like a sports cars than the VIII. If I had the choice I’d take an VIII, but I lean toward luxury anyway.

Back to Volo, a couple of 64 Galaxies under the tent on a rainy day. One was red, windows down, not my choice for skirts and headlight visors but otherwise nice:

And a blue one, I like this color more, no skirts, but ditch those wheels for stock caps stat:

Couple of 63 Galaxie 500 XL coupes. Several Ford fans I know claim the 64, like the 55, were some of the better quality and reliability years for postwar Ford's.

I always liked the ‘64 Ford. It had a solid, substantial look to it.

I have never seen a two-door Airflow in person. An area owner has a four door.

The blue on the Ford is relatively rare in this area. Much more common is the aqua color on those. A friend has a convertible with a 289 engine in the aqua. And with the full wheel covers.

That's not saying much. The Fords of that era just never ran right IMO--not sure if it was the carburetors or engine breathing, but they loaded up, idled poorly and got just awful MPGs.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
I wonder if the blue is a stock color. It looked period correct to me, but I don't know the Ford color chart. It looked good anyway. Aqua is a good color for those, especially a convertible (white top?).
