To all prospective Pilot purchasers: I purchased a 2WD, EX-L, 06 Pilot, Silver yesterday from Crown Honda in Charlotte, NC for an OTD total of $27,250.00. This is the EX-L without RES or Navi. This was a negotiated deal after weeks of phone calls and dealer visits. For those folks in the Tennessee, Georgia, NC, SC, and Va. area, apparently the 2WD EX-L's are very difficult to find. Was this a good deal? When I was negotiating, the manager finally tried to trick me and tell me that other people in the parking lot were looking at my car. This was a good approach from his point of view.

    Honda also offered 5.79% financing.

How did dealing with Gwinnett Place Honda compare with other dealers in the Atlanta area? We're looking to buy an '06 EX-L w/RES (not sure 2WD or AWD) in the next couple of months.

...from Reliance Honda in Lake Jackson (Houston area) yesterday. We flew to Houston from Dallas and the sales manager picked us up at the airport.

Paid 27,888.00 (incl. dest) + 1050.00 for the towing package + TTL, etc... I don't have OTD handy, but you can figure 6.25% Texas tax plus modest title fees etc... No unreasonable doc fees or anything like that.

My impressions are generally VERY good. This was one of the easiest car deals I've ever done, despite the out-of-town nature of it. All of the people at Reliance, from the sales manager to the service people, are extremely friendly and easy to work with. There was no attempt at a bait-and-switch, no pushing for options, extended service plans, etc... Just real smooth and easy.

There were a couple SMALL issues that didn't amount to a big deal at all - I'll mention them only to perhaps help readers avoid them in the future by mentioning them to their dealer ahead of time.

    1. The towing package wasn't quite installed when we arrived and the car hadn't been 'made ready' yet. I think there may have been a communication breakdown between the sales manager and the service manager regarding when we were arriving - I'm not sure on this. I think there was also a delay in getting the towing package parts in. The end result was that it took a few hours to get the car ready. The sales manager made a generous concession of his own volition - we didn't ask for anything. I'm not going to say what it was, because it doesn't matter - I think he felt bad enough about the delay that he won't have to do it again ;-) Again this wasn't a big deal and I chalked it up to 'growing pains' - this is a small dealership that is growing quickly and seems to be doing a good job of handling it.

    2. The second issue was again, another small one & not Reliance's fault. The seats had some kind of Armor-All-like substance on them, making them slippery and shiny. Worse, it wasn't evenly applied, so some parts of the seats had nothing on them, while others were real shiny. There was also slight overspray from this susbstance on virtually every plastic part of the interior. I asked, and they said the dealer they got the car from had applied it. It's going to take a little elbow grease to get this stuff off. If you buy a new car, tell the dealer NOT to put any junk on the leather! They look just fine the way they come from the factory & you can put your own stuff on them if you like (I personally can't stand the Armor-All look in a car). Besides, nobody will EVER apply it as carefully as YOU will on your new car.

The bottom line: I highly recommend Reliance for a Pilot or any other Honda purchase, even if you have to come in from out of town or even out of state. They really seem to appeciate their customers & do everything they can to keep 'em happy. I'm not quite in the market for a second new car (the Pilot is for my wife), but when I am I'm going back to Reliance.

p.s. - another example of how nice they are: I bought some rear splash guards from the parts counter. I intended to put them on myself when I got home, cuz I hate paying people to do things I can do myself with a screwdriver. The service manager saw me with them and offered to put them on himself while the other guys installed the towing package - no charge. I let him. My local dealer probably would have charged me thirty bucks for that 10 minutes' work. Just really good people...

Congratulation for you. Enjoy. oh I love the pilot.I am happy to see they are the dealer to be nice to every custom. I may back to them too.

By the way, just curious, you get 2WD?
  • irishrover3irishrover3 Member Posts: 10
Awiting an EX-L from Reliance now. Should pick it up this week. Agreed price is $25,962 + TTL. Total OTD set to be $27,800 or so.

Seem very good so far and pricing seems good as well. Will revert once deal is done and car is in hand.

I dealt with both Gwinnett Place and Team Honda of Lithia Springs. I played them against each other and Gwinnett Place gave me the best price, but was higher once they included all the dealer add-ons. What I ended up doing was telling Team Honda I would buy the vehicle from them at Gwinnett Place's price, without all of the dealer add-ons. They agreed and we ended getting a Pilot EXL 2WD w/ RES for $27,490, plus TTL only. Hope this helps with your decision.

Just got home from purchasing a Pilot 2wd EXL for $24,246 including destination charges. This was over $8100 off the MSRP. This was from Herb Chambers in Westborogh Massachusetts. Don't know why they went that low - maybe it is because 2wd suv's in New England are not in strong demand. Hope this helps everyone.
  • mdredmondmdredmond Member Posts: 24
    Thanks! Yes, 2WD.

I was curious if anyone had a recent experience with buying a Pilot in the Seattle area? We are looking for a 4wd ex-L - no DVD or nav.
I have heard of some people making trips down to Portland to pick up a pilot as well.
Overall, have people been doing most of their bids on email, via fax or both?
    Thanks for the insight!

I live in Berkeley, California and am in the market for an EX-L 2WD, no DVD or nav. Anyone have a recommendation for an aggressive Bay Area dealer? Thanks.
  • keithrlkeithrl Member Posts: 32
The most aggressive price I got (26,100 for EXL, no RES or DVD) was from Stockton Honda, in Stockton, CA. Not SO far from berkely. I live in the midwest, and even then I thought of flying out there to get it, but I didnt want to drive back that far.

I just bought a Pilot last week in Omaha, NE. Called 5 dealerships in the area - told them to give me their bottom dollar price, and i'll call back the one who is lowest. I got $30,329 from Superior Honda - that was the lowest (one dealership was $1500 over that). That price includes destination, etc - but does NOT include taxes.. those we pay seperately in NE. So, for our black, EX-L, 4WD Pilot with DVD.. i'm thinking we got a decent deal based on what i've been reading here. They said that July 5th was the last day of a $1500 National Rebate that this dealership was passing on to consumers.

They also gave me $10,000 for my trade in on my 2002 Explorer.. which surprised me. We were going to try to sell it ourselves for $10,500 because we didn't think we'd get more then $8,000 for a trade-in (it was a little beat up, and Kelley Bluebook said it was worth about $11,000 in good condition - that was sales price not trade in price). So we were happy with that as well! :D

Anyway - just wanted to know if the $30,329 was a good deal for a fully loaded Pilot. Thanks!

    Quick update and clarification:

    1. It occurred to me that they might have held off on installing the towing package until I got there because I hadn't put down a deposit or anything - it was just a 'handshake' over the phone. The towing package requires the installation of upgraded power steering and transmission fluid coolers & thus is a bit hard to undo if I hadn't shown up to buy the car.

    2. I got all that Armor All stuff off okay. It just buffed out with a rag & didn't take as long as I'd feared.

Great dealer, great car - we love it!
  • mdredmondmdredmond Member Posts: 24
That was actually a $3000 rebate, not $1500. Some dealers might not have qualified for the $3000 if they didn't meet their sales quotas.

I'd expect to pay about $28,600-28,800 including destination but excluding TTL, documentation, etc... Sounds like you got a good deal on the trade-in, though, and that makes it pretty much a wash.

The dealer was probably trying to give you a decent deal on both the trade-in and the new car so you didn't feel ripped off on either side. If you hadn't done the trade-in, you'd have paid too much for the car by $1500 or so.

    Hello Everyone,

Considering that I have received so much great information from this board, here is my chance to give something back.

On 7-9 I purchased an EX-L 2wd (no RES, or Nav) from Rock Honda in Fontana CA for 24,895. This included the destination, but did not include Tax or License. My total out the door price was 27,135 after adding Tax and License. I financed with Honda for 5 years at 6.29% with a 719 credit score, which was the best they have at this moment I think.

    Hope this helps out.

First off, thanks for the great information I have read through using this forum. What a great research tool!

    Now on to my questions...

    1. Can anyone reccommend a Honda dealer in Western/Central NY? I'm looking to buy a Pilot within the next week and want to know who has treated them fairly during their buying process.

    2. I will be relocating to NJ on August 1st. Is there an advantage to buying in NY before I move or an advantage to buying in NJ. I prefer to buy in NY because I don't have the time to travel to NJ anytime in the next week, but if it is more advantagous, I'll consider it.

Thanks for your help in advance.

    I got 28.3k and 28.4k from a dealership in Philly for a 06 Pilot ex-l with Navi.

    Seems really good....

I knows there is a redesign coming out in 07 for the MDX, is there a redesign coming out for the Pilot?
  • dwilliamdwilliam Member Posts: 128
Only expecting minor facia changes in the '07 Pilot if any. No redesign expected. Inquiring minds now know!

Reading thru this great forum, I noticed how much people were paying for financing, and thought of sharing something.

I saw that Costco Auto Financing is offering 5.74% for 36 months on new cars, for people with good credit. Executive members get 5.64% and they say that someone with "Super" credit (whatever that is), may qualify for even lower rates. No application fee, or prepayment penalty.

To clarify, I have not applied for or got this rate, but it is worth a try for someone who is looking to finance (and is a Costco member).

    Hope this helps someone.

Good day folks I need some advice. How does $25831 plus $550 destination for a 4WD EXL sound? Is this a good deal? I got this quote from a dealer in New Jersey after asking them if they could beat Open Road's instaquote price. OTD would be about $500 less than Open Road's.
  • hack2hack2 Member Posts: 6
    What NJ dealership was it?
  • litlinlitlin Member Posts: 11
I am in Long Island NY and in our paper they advertise the 2006 pilot LX 4 wheel drive for 25100, and 0% financing for 5 years for qualified folks.

    1. I spoke to a dealer in nassau and they said that they are firm on this price with the 0% financing for 5 years.
I am feeling this is too high?

Please provide your experiences and thoughts. How do you get these folks down? Do they take more off or are they hidden deals out there.

    Thanks
    Lit
  • dwilliamdwilliam Member Posts: 128
If you forgo the 0% offer you will probably be able to negotiate like the rest of the people in the Forum. Do the math both ways. Ask them to give you the best offer with a rate that you can secure yourself and then figure the 25,100 plus t,t, and l and see which is lower. They are buying down the rate with the profit from the Pilot.

    These are texas t,t,l

Example: Best price (using invoice - 3000 as example)
    22931.99 @ 6.50 apr 60 months = 28945.80 total incl ttl and finance charges.

    25,100 + t,t, l = $26,899.24 drive-out with no interest.

I know they are saying 60 months but already I am beginning to question their offer and think they are offering 0% on short term financing because they would have to buy down $4763.96 of finance charges on a 60 month term. More likely they are offering the 0% on 36 months only.

Even at 36 months it looks like the total obligation is lower $27,205.20 vs. $26,899.24 So it's a good deal. HOWEVER!!! If you plan on paying off this loan quickly then the 0% is not right for you. If you do the 0% and pay it off in a couple of years you don't get a reduction in principal. If it is financed and you pay it off quickly the remaining interest is lopped off. Always go the route of higher principal vs lower rate if the following two things apply. The APR affects final negotiated price AND you are going to accelerate the loan (pay off within first couple of years.)

If you are going to pay it out over the entire time and are not going to trade or pay off quickly then you WILL save money with the 0% loan.

Always double check the math for yourself... it's been a LOOOOONG day.

    The Anonymous Dealer

Bottom Line: At their offer of 25,100 (I am wondering what will be added to the price when you get there... not being rude... maybe DOC fees are high?) at 0% that is basically saying "We will do $20,336.04 PLUS T,T,L"

Maybe the going rate is lower in the NY area. the lower the standard rate the less they have to buy down.
  • mcdermott2mcdermott2 Member Posts: 68
I would also be very interested in that NJ dealer. Just curious what the lease would be on that deal with $1500 total out the door.

I just received email from Carmichael Honda in Sacramento, CA. I did not send quote request email as I am not going to buy Pilot. I guess they have my email address (I have my Odyssey's oil change there) so they just sent out. Hope this helps.

THanks folks for your terrific responses. I really appreciate them. The 0% is based on financing 20,000 max so I would have to put 5 grand down.

But that CA deal is nice, taking 3 grand off the invoice?
for the pilot, what does the Ex have that the LX does not other than leather seats?

    Thanks again

I took my Gwinnet Place Honda offer to Curry Honda (where I had taken my prior Honda for service for many years) thinking they would try to match it. When I told them the offer they said there was no way they could match it and really didn't think I was being honest. They actually called me yesterday to follow-up and I told them what I ended up getting and they basically said "wow, good for you". They then asked for my service business, of course. I had gotten email quotes from all the Atlanta area dealers to start with, they were all similar and higher than what I had seen on this forum. They all know what the others are quoting. I decided to go to the Gwinnet internet guy in person and said I got one of the prices quoted to me that I saw on here and we went from there. It was a pretty low number so he did push back, but realized I had done homework so he cut through the usual B.S. Bob, Gwinnet's internet guy is really nice, pretty much no-nonsense, and is able to authorize and do deals vs. most regular salespeople who constantly have to go and run numbers by a mgr. Good overall experience with him.
  • vinayg1vinayg1 Member Posts: 28
That would be great price, I think. Can u share the Dealership name please? I am also trying to get quotes for same model, but haven't got anything as low.

    Tombonz,

Please advise which dealerhip in Philly. Also, did you get a quote for EX-L with RES? Thanks.
  • keithrlkeithrl Member Posts: 32
That price sounds good to me.

I just plunked deposit down for 4WD EXL (no RES or NAV) for 26,830 at Valley Honda in Aurora, IL. I have seen better deals, but I live in Minneapolis, and the best deal here was 28,100, and I fly to Chicago for work often so I can fly down for free and actually charge mileage to drive it back.

I did originally have a price of 26,400 at Grand Honda near Chicago, but then at the last minute they snuck in a $250 "internet" fee, a $40 "drive away" fee and charged almost two hundred more for towing package installation than Valley.. That made me made enough that even if there price had still been lower I would have gone with Valley Honda.

Thanks again to all on this board without whom I would have paid a lot more.
  • dbrosdbros Member Posts: 81
Grand Honda doesn't have good dealer review! If you type dealer reviews on google you would find out what people are saying about that dealership. That's why I don't trust them. Good for you, you did'nt pursue that one. ;)

i just purchased the exl w/dvd at tempe honda (in arizona) on 7/8/06 for 27K $30,717 TOTAL OUT THE DOOR. earnhardt honda was offering $3250 below invoice, but i didn't want to drive to avondale so i asked closer dealers if they could match. tempe honda said yes. excellent buying experience.

I am looking for a honda pilot EXL with DVD. Their first offer on a manager's car with 5000+ miles, was 30,400.
That seems pretty high. I'm in Austin, TX.
    Any suggestions? credit score 680.
  • keithrlkeithrl Member Posts: 32
That is pretty high. I got a much better quote from Reliance Honda in Lake Jackson, Texas. Not Austin, but close enough to make a lot better deal worthwhile.

    4wd ex-l with navi--------
    Sussman was 28.7k
Connicelli gave a friend 28.3k. When I was in there they told me $29.7k Later they called, they gave me quote of $28,410. I didn't negotiate at all yet, they were giving a fair amount for my trade too.

I didn't ask about the RES.

I am close to buying my Pilot. But one of the things I needin order to import it into Canada is a "Recall Clearance Letter". basically it says that such-and-such Pilot VIN 123456.. has no recall notices in effect.

Honda US is balking at that on a new car sold to a Canuck importing to Canada. So much for Free Trade! Will dealers provide it? Are there any Canadians out there who have had success out there getting said letter on a new Pilot?

And while I'm at it what about getting daytime running light installed before purchase? (another! requirement in Canada)

I would like to thank all of you who have posted their buying price and buying experience. For a first time buyer like me, this forum has really helped me to negotiate like a pro. Now it's time to return the favor. I got a Taffeta White 4WD EXL today for $26,331 including destination. Adding up 6% NJ tax and all other fees, the total OTD came up to $28,454. Dealer is DCH Kay Honda in Eatontown. I negotiated for the price before heading to the dealership and stressed that I wanted no extras, no surprises. The salesman was great, no pressure at all. My first car buying experience turned out great...thanks to everyone in this forum.

It was quite helpful. still need to know if dealer provided a "recall clearance letter". Any lucky Canucks out there?
  • dwilliamdwilliam Member Posts: 128
I am not positive about this but I "Think" the dealer needs to fax a copy of the MSO to the Customs office and they clear it. Dealers do have access to Honda's Service database and can "Clear" a vehicle of any recalls the vehicle might be due for. So perhaps they are wanting a print screen displaying the VIN and no active recall campaigns? Check with the Service manager... you might get further than with us Sales Manager types who don't know didly about service forms. We know when they need fixin but we don't keep track 'o the forms.

Good luck and always check with the customs office when transporting out of state.

Side note: When I worked for Toyota it was in our dealer agreement with Toyota manufacturing that we could NOT sell a vehicle for export out of the U.S. You may have same issue with Honda. I am not sure.

The OTD price I got from DCH Kay is about $500 less than Open Road's. Base price is $25831, Open Road Instaquote for this week is $26,131. That $300 difference, plus DCH Kay's doc fee is only $129, and from what I read from previous posts here Open Road's doc fee is $298. I'm working on a tight budget so driving the extra 20 miles to get $500 off is definitely worth it.
  • pilotopiloto Member Posts: 9
Just use the Open Road price as the bargaining chip and see how much lower the other dealers are willing to go. ;)
  • dwilliamdwilliam Member Posts: 128
Lord Knows we have done a TON of dealer trades to get any number of new Hondas for our customers! Yes it is possible and still get a great deal. Be prepared to pay a small driver fee to get the vehicle.

Another side note to the Forum. Pay the daggum Driver fees! It is not our fault that we gave you a GREAT deal and you don't want anything on the lot. It is a nominal charge and gets you the vehicle in your color choice with the equipment you want. If a dealer charges you something outrageous then he is just trying to rebuild profit but most of the time it is anywhere from 50 - 150 bucks. It is a true cost as we have to pay a driver to get what you want. Please don't play hardball on this one and is unfair to your dealer who is trying to work with you.

I am not trying to make this sound like a complaint and we will absorb it sometimes but don't think they are just trying to get over on you. 98% of the time they are not, they are just trying to maintain the profit margin you agreed to.
