I am thinking I may still be able to get that asking price down a bit. Working the phones now, I will keep you all posted. This site is awesome and has helped me a great deal in bargaining this past week!
Also, beings that you have a trade you have to realize that the dealer will give you a good deal on the Pilot but will make up for it on the trade.
If you have all the prices in writing, take it to another dealership and see if they can beat it.
I purchased an Amazon Green Pilot EX-L RES(DVD) from Staten Island Honda for $28050 (incl. dest.). The 'dealer fee' added up to less than $100 and was for State Inspection, NY Tire Tax, registration/title process fees. Open Road and other 'low price' Jersey dealerships want closer to $300. SI Honda has plenty more to sell so anyone in the five boroughs or LI should check them for a quote.
Here's what I've learned from this experience:
- Email dealers for quotes through Edmunds if you don't want to include a phone number. Edmunds' form does not require phone number where every dealer's 'quick quote' does.
- Don't assume that destination ($550) is included in the quote. Send a follow-up to confirm.
- Confirm ALL extra fees.
- Once you agree on a dealership and price have them fax you the numbers. This should reduce the possibility of any 'gotchas' when you show up at the dealership.
- Depending on your region don't settle for anything over $3K BELOW INVOICE (Seattle dealers seem to be an exception). $4K BELOW INVOICE should be your target. This would mean the dealer has to eat into their holdback. Probably won't see smaller dealers do this. (I would suspect that this will hold true into August to clear the lots, but you never know...)
- Check dealer inventory (many dealership websites contain this) to see which lots are full and potentially more eager to deal.
- Do your research and don't assume anything!
Also, I felt that after saving thousands I wasn't going to go crazy doing more shopping to save another hundred or so. I purchased for the lowest price I received through email from a dealership in my state (and area). That made the DMV process so much easier. I felt it was a fair price so didn't negotiate any further.
Again thanks to all, this is such a great forum! Check out how many responses the other forums have. They don't come close! Big thanks to the dealers that add their two cents, especially dwilliam.
I've enjoyed following this forum and getting, what I feel to be, a great deal but it's now time to 'graduate' to the owner's forum! :shades: Good luck to all on their research and bargaining.
Thanks everyone for the info. I was ready to buy for 379$+tax before checking this thread.
am shopping for a pilot EX-L 4WD in seattle area, would appreciate help, how do I contact you?
or if anyone else have recommendations for dealers
thanks
There is no installation for Cargo Tray, and wheel locks just means one nut from each tire is replaced with a lock nut (so maybe 10 minutes installation, if you take into account the time required to tear open the package).
Surprising that both dealers quoted that high.
Check out the accessory prices for those on honda.com. You should save atleast $200 on that package. Honda.com give you the option of buying it from them with installation done by dealer of your choice. I would say, buy the cargo tray and wheel locks without installtion and the splash guards with installation.
If you just tell the dealers that you have that option, they should match it with no problems.
We just purchased our Pilot on Thrs. and I've already had a neighbor and co-worker go to the same dealer and purchase one...both had to drive 2-3 hours to get there and had no problems.
Email me at pjthompson5@yahoo.com and I'll give you some info. that can't be posted in the forum...hope I can help.
Aw shucks!
Always glad to help!
The Anonymous Dealer
Does anyone know about dealer money available to get well below invoice? Again Edmunds lists none today for Pilots in this area.
For those buying the 4WD NAVI, what have you paid locally and where? :surprise:
Since I am saving money, I was wondering about the appropriateness of sending the salesman at Valley Honda a check for some amount, since he did a lot of work which ended up getting me a deal somehwere else, so he didnt get a commission. I would be happy to pay him an appropriate amount but I dont know if this is done, or should be done.
I would highly recommend this internet sales guy at Valley Honda in the Chicago area. They were a treat to work with compared with some other dealers in the Chicago area I had talked to. It just so happened at the end of the day, it was a much better deal for me to buy locally in Minneapolis, and it was nothing Valley Honda did to dissuade me from buying there. I understand I cannot list the name so I wont, but he is an excellent sales guy, and as I said, I would like to get him some amount of compensation even though I didnt buy the car from him.
I suppose T.A.D. can comment on that.
I'd do it. It probably almost never happens, but it would be really nice of you to do it. Maybe TAD can suggest an appropriate amount.
Basic price was $27,400. It had mud flaps and wheel locks installed so the total price came to $27,640. In addition, I had to pay California sales tax of 7.75%, but that is the same tax rate I would have paid in Las Vegas. And Nevada gives you credit for tax paid out of state; so sales tax was a wash. I also paid an additional $55 for doc fees and a drive away permit. The Internet Sales Manager was very easy to work with. He explained everything about the vehicle and the price so there were no surprises when I arrived at the dealership. The pilot was ready to go and we spent about one hour going for a test drive, examining the vehicle, and doing the paperwork (I took advantage of Honda’s 2.9% financing). There are three Honda dealerships in Las Vegas and the best price I could negotiate was $29,556. So going out of state was well worth the effort.
I had planned on buying from Reliance Honda in Lake Jackson, TX, and they too were outstanding to work with. They were a little cheaper than Santa Ana Honda, but did not have the color my wife wanted. When I called Reliance to cancel my order, they could not have been nicer. They were happy I had found the exact vehicle I wanted.
I have purchased new vehicles before and the experiences were anything but pleasant. But the Internet has changed things. This time I dealt with two great dealerships, saved a lot of money, and enjoyed the whole experience. Good luck to all you new buyers and thanks to everyone who posted on this forum. You saved me a lot of money.
It's a struggle to find decent prices in the Northwest compared to other areas of the country (based on the quotes I've received). If anyone would like the salesman and sales manager I worked with at Renton Honda feel free to email me and I'll get you his name and contact information. My email is pjthompson5@yahoo.com
Hopefully if they maintain their pricing some of us in the Northwest can at least stay close to the rest of you.
I also live in MN, I am looking for Pilot currently as well,
I am just wondering if you could give me more information about your Pilot purchase price or car otpions.
THanks,
You can send me messages. thanks,
jiantang886 AT yahoo dot com.
This was the best price I could find. Im sure NAV instead of RES would be the same cost.
I dont know what that comes to with RES, but unless it is 2600, it would be a better deal. Valley Honda was great, as said I didnt buy there because I had equal deal from my own locality, but would recommend Valley Honda to Chicago area customers
Enjoy the new Pilot.
Also, would like info on breaking-in a new car engine. Long time ago, manufacturers recommended varying speeds during the first 1000 miles. Does this still apply nowadays for new cars? I am buying the Pilot in Los Angeles and driving 500 miles back home to Northern California.
Appreciate your feedback.
SussmanAutomotive and WillowGrove Honda is located in Willow Grove PA which is a suburb of Philadelphia. Forum rules prevent me from giving names and phone numbers but you can find the phone numbers on line Call and ask to speak to the "Sussman Internet Representative" The salesman I had was fantastic. No pressure. Quick with a quote which met the test as lowest against all the other quotes I received and didn't budge from his initial bid because he knew he didn't have to.
I purchased a 2006 Blue Steel Metallic Pilot EX/L 4WD for under $27,000 (taxes and tags extra). I passed on the Nav, DVD or RES and paid $1700 for Tow package, SideStep Rails and crossbars.
Good Luck
2006 Pilot, EX-L 4 X 4 $25,990
Destination = $550
Doc. Fee = $170
Add Tax @ 6% on $26710 (Vehicle + Destination + Doc Fee X 6%)= $1602.60
Title = $15
Plate Transfer = $8
Total Cost with all fees and tax = $28335.60 Clean and Simple
The $25990 is over $7000 off MSRP of $33,045! (They are advertising on local bill boards for $5000 off)
Emailed dealership from their website and told them the vehicle I needed and the price I had seen offered by another dealership, received a call within hours from a sales person...don't know if it's the "Internet manager" or just the sales person who got the lead. Negotiated a little and asked 'em to email the deal to confirm. Very pleasant process and a nice sales person.
Don't know if it was my color choice (as they have several black in stock) or if they will deal that much on all EX-L or all Pilots :confuse:
As long as there are no games played upon delivery, it will go down as the best "car deal" I have ever made :shades: Easy as an email and a phone call...
Don't forget about the 2.9% up to 36 months for excellent credit rated customers from AHFC!

You can check inventory here
Request a Quote through Honda here
Depending on what you're looking for I can only assume that your quote would have a similar savings. They seemed to want to 'move' the Pilots.
If the numbers are good follow up with a call to verify all costs and get it in writing (fax). Take nothing for granted! I didn't run into any issues but it doesn't hurt to cover all the bases. Best of luck on your hunt.
The salesperson made the first offer over the phone when I called the next day following a test drive. The offer was the same as the internet price I got on line, and exactly $3800 less than dealer invoice published on kbb.com, so I took it.
MSRP: 31,295 including $550 destination
Deal: 24,414 including $550 destination
The above does not include NJ sales tax, NJ tire tax of $1.50 per tire, NJ registration of $369 for 4 yrs and a ridiculously high doc fee of $298, but the vehicle price was so low and the experience so hassle free I didn't think it was worth making an issue over that amount.
(For new vehicles NJ charges up front for 4 yrs of registration - I know - it's a rip off but not the dealer's fault. The positive - you don't have to renew it until 2010.)
The sales person waited until delivery to tell me about the free wheel locks - a nice surprise.
We did the deal over phone/fax which turned out great. They faxed me the contract but I didn't sign it until I picked the vehicle up. And I never actually put a deposit down even though I had faxed them my credit card number. The dealer never put the credit card transaction through all of which I thought was amazing.
Someone here said your goal should be $7000 under MSRP. I definitely agree with that. For whatever reason Honda is looking to move Pilots. The dealer was Open Road Honda, btw.">
Thanks for the help.
$23,900 purchase price ($28,794 MSRP)
$21,000 trade in for our 2005 Odyssey LX 16,000 miles
Kelley blue book trade in value on Odyssey $19,650
4.90% financing from Honda Finance.
NEVER thought I would see a deal like these in this forum on a Pilot!!!
My 2 cents on rust proofing, it's a profit center for the dealer. Your pilot is already protected by a 5 year unlimited mileage corrosion warranty...keep it touched up and it won't rust
Same for interior protection, take good care of it and leather will last a very long time.
Extended warranty is a personal choice, I never do 'em, but other's do...I have taken several vehicles (Honda's and others) well over 100,000 miles and have never had reason to use an extended warranty. Most "bugs" are evident well within the standard 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. But it's your car, so whatever makes you comfortable

Also, a question about trading in a car (maybe the anonymous dealer can help me with this one!). I am currently driving a 99 Jeep that is owned by my father (who lives in ohio). The title is in his name but he has graciously offered to let me use it towards the purchase of the pilot. My question...what paperwork do I need to have in order to trade it in without having him fly down? Can I do a power of attorney? Any knowledge on the topic is appreciated! Thanks!!
