You could contact the dealer that has it and see what kind of price they could make you on it. If you can come to terms with them you could drive over and get it, fly over and drive it back, or pay a car hauler to bring it to you. I have done all three and the car hauler can be very reasonable if you use an open (non-enclosed) haul and let them do it at their convenience.

In the end you should try to get what you want in the color you prefer, if you can.

But also a good lesson to those that want to wait and see if the incentives will get larger and the deals cheaper. They could, but if you want certain model and color you may have to take your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice the longer you wait.

I drove 240 miles to get the deal I wanted. You could get a one way rental from Avis (or other rental place) for about $110 if you couldn't find anyone to ride with you and drive your car back. Just a suggestion. Also I wouldn't turn in the rental car till your deal was official.

Picked up our second (replacement for 2006 totaled Pilot) Pilot today in NY. EXL w/Navi 4wd. Paid $29,405 + tax, title, license and $45 doc fee.

Got a red one this time, gray leather. For wife and 2 kids... the first one kept them safe and the cash incentives are too good right now... why pay $4k more for a highlander that has less features?! :)

I spoke to the dealer again that offered me the $29,892 again today and mentioned that the one dealership said they'd do $29,800 but wanted $400 to find me a Nimbus Grey. They, after a bit of thought (over the phone) said that to get my business, he would match the price and waive the fee's to get the vehicle brought in. Trade-in wasn't gonna happen as the price they shot wasn't good enough, but we can sell it outright with no problems. It'll make someone a great school car (2002 Cavalier, 2-door coup with sport package (ground effects, spoiler, machined wheels), but its still the base model so no power windows. They only offered $3300 and even the salesman said he didn't even want me to take that deal as I could probably get $4500-$5000 myself.

So it looks like we'll be signing paperwork provided that the dealer in Kansas (or wherever he gets it) will give up the Nimbus Grey EX-L w/Navi. $29,810 Out-the-door, but we'll also get the extended warrantee. :D

I am thinking of front dr VP or EX, anyone knows how much selling price difference between these two models?
  • og4lifeog4life Member Posts: 25
If your talking about an EX without leather, the msrp difference is about $2,150. However, dut to the rebate difference in the two models ($2,500 for VP and $3,500 for EX), it would only cost you about $1K more to get the EX. With the EX, the main additions are power seat, climate control, fog lights, and garage door opener. However, for some reason the you lose XM radio with the EX.

Sorry if this has been beaten to death --

for chicago area people -- what's the best quote you've gotten and from what dealership? I was also advised to get the VIN sheet faxed to me so there are no "surprises" when I actually go to the dealer. Is this right? Any other sound advice before signing papers??

    Thank you!!!

What's your best negotiating tool??? Were you on the phone or email? Any advice? How do you secure this deal without the extra details they surprise you with?
  • monica_mmonica_m Member Posts: 1
    Hi Raj,
That sounds like a good deal. I'm also in Boston and looking for an EX-L AWD. what dealer did you get that price from? I think Boch in Norwood had a similar price.
  • mike274mike274 Member Posts: 35
HI. It seems like a good deal you recevied. Can you let me know what dealer in NY that you purchased from. Thanks

    Hi Monica,
You got it ! It's from Boch.

Took the plunge and bought the silver color pilot EX-L 2WD w/navi for $27,500 before title/tax/doc fee. MSRP was above $34k. Wanted to wait for 2009 but after looking at the model decided to go for 2008 instead of the "box" like 2009 version. Now i can only hope that congress extend the sales tax deduction for Texas state for 2008 tax. :P

Picked up the Nimbus Grey EX/L with Navigation today. went back and forth with the dealer for a few days. Final was $28, 700+ 175 in doc fees (I know, all profit)+ IL tax.
This is about right in this area. I got a couple of phone quotes that were lower by 100-200, but didn't want to deal with the hassle and surprise factor. I also got the 3.9% for 60. The finance guy said that I had to sign the rider "in-case the financing doesn't get official approval from honda". I told him to keep an spot empty in his lot until it does, because I will bring it back if the financing deal is anything different than the one specified in the contract. He assured me it would be fine.

Now it is time to go and start enjoying the ride!

    Hi ,

I am based out of Aurora. I got about 4 Internet quotes from different Dealers for AWD Ex-L. All are in the region of OTD 28900. Take note that this is the first offer received by me. The lowest price for the above model without tax , title, doc etc is 26780. There are a couple of dealerships which have good inventory - Honda of lisle , Honda of joliet.
I am planning to buy within next week
  • andyman1970andyman1970 Member Posts: 47
    Nice job!

I just drove home a 2008 Nimbus Gray EX-L w/Navi plus mats and wheel locks. 30,852 OTD - that's true out the door inclusive of all taxes and fees. I also got the 2.9% financing. Very happy with this transaction, though they really didn't want to give me the low financing too but an email from their dealership commtting the rate sealed the deal!

I also have two LCD panels within the headrests of the driver and passenger seats. Does this mean I also have some DVD capabilities? I just got home so I haven't read the manuals yet.

    jillyrene

You could always bring me with - I usually only cost a nice dinner ;) I kid of course....

The best negotiating tool is taking the time to educate yourself. If you understand the concepts of simple math, dealer incentives, and hold back you'll be just fine.

A great start is right here on this forum. I ALWAYS go into the lot FIRST and write down both the stock and vin numbers BEFORE I talk to any salesman. No baits and switches on my shift....

The real key is to show NO FEAR. Any sign of desperation is a weakness. I've walked out of dealerships over $25 in price difference. Call me a jerk, but its my money but guess what - I've NEVER paid more than I've wanted to for a car. Even though some of my terms and conditions are called "unreasonable" at first by many dealers.

The best option I've been using is going in with an itemized bill of materials. I never ask for options, and never offer a trade. Cash business is the best, even if you decide to finance in the middle of the conversation with the finance guy. If the dealer wants to add options, I always make it on his dime. No deviations here.

Keep it simple - something like this:

    Starting Point: $XX,XXX
    Destination: $XXX
    Doc Fee: $XXX
    Tax at X%: $X,XXX
    Title License $XXX
    Local Surcharges $XX
    True Out the Door: $XX,XXX

Don't sign ANYTHING until you have OTD and financing committed from THEM in writing.

    Hope this helps!

    my recent car buying adventure

Hope it is useful. It's a great car!!

You worked way to hard and spent way to much time haggling with the dealership. I have never spent hours at a dealership buying a car. There are dealers out there that will give a buyer a decent price and not play any games when you show up to pick up your new vehicle. It is worth any buyers time and trouble to seek those dealers out and reward them with their business.

  • reidcarlbergreidcarlberg Member Posts: 4
In theory, I don't disagree. However, I saved some significant cash over the low no haggle price by haggling, so I feel like it was worth my time. That doesn't mean I don't wish I didn't have to play the game. I just want to get a low price more than I want the convenience of a higher, no haggle price.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
Our Pilot price was down in the hold back and we didn't have to spend much time in the dealership at all. We got the details done with the "Internet department" and when we showed up to pick up the car the numbers matched what we were promised. That said, we probably could have received a similar offer if we went into other dealerships and spent a few hours "grinding away" at the price.

I think the thing that stood out is that you rewarded the dealership that treated you the worst with your business. They would have lost me WAY before they got around to offering you a decent deal. That sort of reinforces their bad behavior - makes them think that is an acceptable way to treat their customers.

The one good thing about dealing with a bad dealer is being able to tell them that you got your vehicle elsewhere if they try to follow up later with a better offer.

I should have also added - congratulations on your new Pilot!

You got a nice price on a nice vehicle, which is all that matters in the end :D .

LCD's in the headrest's from factory? Really? I didn't think you could get Navigation in the dash and also get a DVD system from Honda. I thought it was one or the other, and if it was DVD you chose, it'd be on the roof and not the headrests. Anyone care to comment?

I got a quote for 08 EX-L AWD with Navi for $27,801 + Tax title, DMV and Doc fees. What do you think about this quote?

    Thanks

Does anyone know the timeframe for this offer ? The dealer I visited today told me it is only till this weekend
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
Sounds right to me. It is a regional offer and last time I checked was not shown on the Honda web page. When my state had a similar cheap finance deal it was a "President's Day" sale and lasted about 10 days.

I'm kind of in a situation now -- what should be included on sales tax? just the vehicle? all fees and title?

And one dealership claimed $4400 under invoice -- is Honda increasing their incentive?

Why must car salesman keep perpetuating the awful stereotype!
  • hondapilot08hondapilot08 Member Posts: 14
The dealer has offered me to apply sale tax only on the amount due after trade-in. Which means
    New car=$28,000
    Trade-In value=$13,000
Amount Due= 28k-13k=$15,000, and the Sales tax I will have to pay will be on $15,000 even though the value of the car is $28,000. Is this a standard practice or is he offering something special?

    Thanks
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
I my state it is normal and in most other states it is normal as well. You paid tax on the current car, so you get a tax credit for the amount allowed as a trade toward another vehicle (new or used) - so you only pay tax on the difference between your negotiated price and the trade allowance.

You should fill out your profile so we know where you live and could then give you a better answer to your question. :D

Jump on it if it is a real offer. This is $2000 cheaper than what they offer in Colorado.
  • jillyrenejillyrene Member Posts: 33
Has anyone done this before? We got everything in writing, and were going to go to the dealership and they suggested we fill out the financing papers online to get the process started.

Is this a good thing to do??

    Thank you!
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
As long as they have a secure web page then it is OK. Or if you have a fax handy they could fax you an app and you fill it out and fax it back. Even better, if you google around you can find an AHFC credit app in PDF format that allows you to type in your info into the PDF and then print it out so you can fax it in typed, not hand written.

    Like this one.

Note that you can't save a copy of the PDF with your info, but you can print copies of it. You can also find other AHFC credit apps online you can print out, fill out by hand, and fax back to your dealer but filling out this online in the Acrobat reader is way cooler and much easier to read.

Thanks for the great information, Dennis. It's really helpful. I'll be using that form.

Could you help me with this as well?? We were just heading out to get our Pilot -- and we get a call with "OOPS! we didn't realize the VIN we gave you has a RES. We can try to take it out."

What do I do?? I'm so tired of dealing with sleaze -- don't tell me they "didn't realize" -- but should I just pass on them? Should I let them take it out? If so, will that damage the vehicle in any way? I'm exhausted going through this-- it shouldn't have to be this way . . .
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
I don't know, either take it at a reduced price or pick another Pilot that has the equipment you wanted or make them find one that does.

I would not want them to remove it from the Pilot or something, that would not end well for you or them.

    Dennis
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,543
We can try to take it out

Classic bait and switch.. They aren't going to take something out that was installed at the factory...

Tell them you don't want the RES, but you'll take it for the same price as one without it.. They'll magically find the car you want, or you'll find out their deal wasn't real to begin with..

    Again, Dennis, thank you.

That's what my gut said, so I just told them forget it. We have 2 small kids and have such a limited window of time to work with each day -- I was mad that they took that much time already!!

And this dealership was the one who'd gotten one of the higher "customer service" ratings in Chicago area. . . is there any hope at all???!! Is it just Chicago, or are all car dealers like this?? ">
  • jillyrenejillyrene Member Posts: 33
Thank you -- that's what I was afraid of. And this may be a very silly question -- but WHY do they do this?? How is it beneficial for them to ultimately not make that sale??!? Or do enough people just bite and say, "well, I didn't plan on it, but. . ."

    any further advice?

You're right, there are plenty of dealers out here! And you'd think ONE of them at least can deal straight. Every time I think it's going to happen this time, there's a major snag. I guess my hang up is that I'm trying to get the best deal possible, price-wise, and if I just took the middle quote, I might be driving right now.

I can't imagine doing this every 2 years!!!

    Thanks again.

I am in NorthEast(NY) and looking for pilot VP 4wd. In my area, nobody could match the prices in GA. I am ready to travel 200miles (NY, NH, VA, NJ, PA) for a good deal on a pilot VP. Appreciate any leads. TIA

How far to Boch Honda in Norwood, MA? They claim to be the #1 dealer "on the planet" in Honda sales.

Their promo page, for example, shows a Pilot EXL for $23,988.
