I did deal with the internet Manager, or at least that is what they call themselves In truth their are three internet sales persons and they cannot really close a deal without the sales manager approval. Do not fall for there low ball quote. Any dealer would be better than San Leandro Honda.
Openroadhonda gave that price, they also list new Honda's on E-bay which can be purchased at similar prices'. They seem to have the best prices' so far on what I'm looking for.
Thanks to all the helpful information posted on this board, I secured what I believe was a good lease on an EX-L in Macon, Georgia. Walsh Honda came up with a $375 a month including taxes (6%), with $396 down (including first payment) on a 36 month/12,000 miles/year lease.
I emailed all dealers in the general area, came up with a good offer from Conyers Honda and then asked that Walsh, which is closest to home, match it. They in fact came in even lower, with a smaller down payment than Conyers.
Following the sales process as described by Edmunds.com all the way, I just bought a Pilot EXL-RES at $1,400 below invoice at Hennessy Honda in Woodstock, GA. I believe a pretty good deal. The base price + doc fee came to $29,018. After the dealer added the options I desired at the cost listed at Honda.com - waving installation charges, the bottom line price, incl. tax, tag and title came to $31,700.
I requested 4 quotes on-line through Edmunds and got some good offers. Hennessy's approach was very professional and, after some back and forth with other dealers, proved to be very competitive. This in stark contrast to the approach at Gwinnett Place Honda. Their internet based quote was lower than anybody else's, but turned out just to be meant to lure the customer into their showroom, only to be pressured into purchasing their dealer options at highly inflated prices (like the "acid rain protection", which is basically a wax job priced at a couple of hundred $$). I had just read Edmunds "confessions of a car salesman" and recognized several themes.
I got a price for a EX-L/Nav for $31,546 from a buying service in the VA/DC/MD area. This incl. Dest./Freight/Handling Fee/inv. Advert. but not tax and tags. This seems much higher than what I have seen in the posts here and am wondering if anyone thinks this is a good price? I was going to check (via internet) with dealers in my area (Balt/Wash. Corridor) as well as in the North Central Jersey area (Edison/Rt.22/Staten Island). Any recommendations for dealers in these areas? :confuse:
Bought an EX-L with Nav for $32,399 out the door Tuesday night from Brown's in Glen Burnie MD. Started with a United Buying Service price + taxes and tags and negotiated down from there. Of course, we bought the last EX-L with Nav that they had. Honda of Bowie just sent me an offer of $31,750 + tax.
Hey Tina, are you talking base or drive out prices when you say $28 or $28.5? Thanks! If drive out, which dealer are you working with, I'd like to buy there too!
Just purchased 2005 EX-L in Ft. Worth, TX. Sent pricing request to 5 dealers in area but only one gave any serious consideration and that was Bankston Honda in Lewisville. Pretty far for me to drive so I took to closest honda dealer and they matched, that was Frank Kent Honda. They will not offer any deal unless you are a savy buyer. Their initial internet offer was above invoice. But they want to sell cars! The facts - 2005 EX-L included destination was 28,500. I did not pay any other fees except TTL - Drive out $30,588. Love the car! Hope this helps other shopping in TX. Edmunds really helped me. I may have not gotten best deal in country but got a good deal.
Has there been any indication what the pricing will be like for the 2006 Pilot? I'm lookin at 2005's right now, but if there won't be a significant bump, I'm thinking about waiting for the '06 in September.
Of course I suppose the more relevant question is how close to invoice I could get on a 2006 versus a 2005. I don't imagine dealers will be willing to negotiate much on an '06 right out of the gate.
I got a quote from Openroad honda in Edison NJ EX-L w/Navigation = $29324 .
Plus freight = $ 515 Plus misc fee called MBIZ = $299 < -- What is this? Plus Doc fee = $198 -- Like the dealer is doing me a favor for doing their paperwork
Plus 6% tax
It's about $32,500..
How do dealer charge tax?
I always thought it was just the car + tax + freight + BS fees = Scammed Total.
Got quotes thru Edmunds and Costco dealers for 2005 Pilot LX in Silver with no dealer added options for $23,476 in CA. Out the door for $25,548. Confirmed it thru visit to dealer today. Sounds like good price.
What do others think?
PS - $1,000 Honda dealer rebate on Pilot has been extended from 7/31 to 9/6.
My wife and I played some dealers off of each other (and we played hard ball) and we paid $29,523 including dest., doc fees and all misc fees. Honda seems to be anxious to move these SUVs. I have bought a lot of cars, and I was surprised at the agressiveness of the dealers we contacted. I wonder if the ridiculous "Employee Pricing" adverts of the American automakers is playing a role in low sales of the Pilot. Either way, Honda knocked the ball out of the park with this truck! We love it!
i just purchased a 2005 exl at hillside honda in queens, nyc for 27,004. only other fees are dmv(around $150 for a new plate) and tax; came to 30k and change out door. I had started with a web quote ('instaquote') from openroad honda for 27104 based on info from this forum, but i also saw as you did that they had documentation fees, dont remember about mbiz. hillside honda is presently having a clearance sale, so i took my printed quote to hillside honda and they agreed to beat it by $100 (told them it was not worth it to buy from them if they will only match quote or beat by small #). I had checked previously over phone and noticed they had fewer 'fees'. so I save $300 just by going to a dealer who was willing to 'beat the quote' by 100. :shades: Hillside Honda had a lot of 2005 silver exls so they gave me one of that instead of my preferred desertrock which i think they only had 1 or 2 of. Want to thank everyone in this forum for all the help and info i have received from their posts.
Sounds like you are in the Phila area like me. I think the $26K range you are referring to is for an Ex not the Ex-L. I have researched over 8 dealers in the South Jersey/Phila area and the best price I could come up with is $27,900 for the Ex-L however I did receive a lot of quotes for the Ex in the $26K range.
Well I picked up my Blue Steel Metallic Ex-L last night from Rossi Honda in Vineland NJ for $27,940. Out the door was $27,940 - $5,900 Trade in + $1,341.06 Tx + $86 Reg Fee/Tire Tax + $97.00Doc Fee = $23,564.06. If you add back the trade in it was $29,464.06.
Overall it was the best deal out there for me as no other dealer came close.
I have been soliciting quotes from dealers all over western OR, and I heard back from one saying he could get me the EX in the mid-26K range, but could not go below $28K for the EX-L. What are the best prices anyone in Oregon has gotten recently for an EX-L? How do I proceed once they've given me their initial quote but I think they can do better?
The same way they proceed. They start with high MSRP and come down You do the reverse . Start with offereing 25.5 ( OTD) for EX and slowly go up. or 27.5 ( OTD ) for EXL. Keep sending them mails even if they reject. Keep communication open.
I was curious if anyone who has previously bought a Pilot or similar vehicle, found any significant price difference from August prices to the September/October prices when the next years models were released. I am in the South Florida area and so far the lowest internet quote I have received for a Honda Pilot EX-L is $27, 969 including the destination charge. If anyone else in the South Florida area has gotten better let me know.
First of all, thanks everyone in the forum who shared their buying experience and dealer's name. I quoted prices from different dealers. The lowest price that I've gotten was from Planet Honda, OTD 30500. But I had very BAD buying experience at that dealer. I will not recommend anybody to go there because they seem to give you a good price over the phone. But after you got there, they try to fool you around and try to sell you a demo piece with that price.
I picked up my Sage brush EXL with running boards and wheel locks today. Nice color and nice price. I am from NYC, but purchased it from Academy Honda, NJ. I have to pay new york tax which is 8.375% and new york reg fee. The car is 27,626 (including dest fee) + 695 (Running boards and wheel locks + labor) + 8.375 newyork tax + ny reg fee + 99.7 doc fee = 30922.
It can be done. Just be patient and follow the advice on Edmunds.com. I had never heard of internet car buying before last week. I requested quotes from 6 dealers through Edmunds, most of whom are identified on this site. The best quotes came from NJ, but I live in PA and wanted to buy closer to home. I did not answer any telephone calls. I just consistently responded to emails from the dealer internet sales persons and graciously held my ground. When the dealer with whom I was most comfortable dropped to match the quote of 26,000 TOTAL (including $515 Destination), I set up an appointment. I had already used email to get my credit report and a good rate for financing (I have good credit). My experience at the dealer in North Phila. was excellent. No nonsense, No pressure. The salesman knew that I knew the information on this bulletin board. Just be smart and work the steps. Get the price you want before you talk to anyone. Know your credit score. Have internet sponsored financing approved before you go to the dealer. Set up the appointment and be confident. I am totally satisfied with the experience. YOU hold the trump card... 2005 Pilots are selling for great prices right now. Buy a Pilot EX for $26,000 plus tax and tags. Mine is sitting in my driveway!
It appears you got a great deal for NYC. If you would not mind how did the OTD price come up to 30k. Did the 27004 include destination? What other dealer costs were involved.
Thanks to Pakya and others on this board who posted information about their strategy and prices they got in Oregon, I was able to get my EX-L today for $27,800 (Including dest. charge) + just $218 OR DMV fees for $28,018 OTD!
I had never really heard of the edmonds site but stumbled upon it the other day, and followed the internet buying strategy. I solicited quotes from about 10 dealers in the area, then once I was finally able to get a quote below my budget constraint, I took it to a local dealer who matched it and I was on my way (I even got my first choice in color - Silver!). Initially, I had several internet sales managers tell me I was crazy to think I could get the EX-L at under $28K, but that's exactly what I was able to do.
Thanks again for your help folks and I am very pleased with my 2005 Pilot EX-L
Thanks to edmunds and this forum ... It seems CA Pilot prices are little more and we have to pay a hefty sales tax. I got a quote from San Leanard Honda (the sales manager was really professional and nice over there) for 28.2K ... But I didn't want to drive 120 miles to take the car. So i went to Carmichael Honda in Sacramento area ... they made a deal for 28.5 for EX-L. Buying experience was quite good ... (compared to what I was expecting). Total paid -- 28.5 + TTL(7.75%) + DMV Fee ==> 30900 (otd). Added Hondacare (7/100K/0 ded) for 1100 . Color was sage brush pearl ... Any comments ?
i'm also looking for a pilot in WA but the quotes are in the upper 29000 lower 30000 range....higher in comparison to what others are getting in other states. Does anyone have any info for WA?
Ron Tonkin Honda in Portland was the only place I was able to get down below $28,000 on the EX-L. A couple of others in the portland area were offering as low as $28,600. The thing about Tonkin is that they pre-accessorize their vehicles so they are really going to want to get above the $27,800 with accessories (if you can talk them down that low - Trust me, it took some work). However, their initial offer (after my low-ball offer of $27K) was the best of any dealership though, at $28,077 or somthing like that. I think if you contacted Tonkin with an offer below $28K, you'd probably get the same $28,077 offer - just beware of the accessories. I was almost going to buy from them, but they were pretty insistent on some accessories, so I decided to take the offer to the dealer here in Eugene. Kendal Honda in Eugene had an EX-L on the lot that was the very color I wanted, so I made the $27.8K offer to them, and they took it. I let them know that I was serious and would buy that day, which I think helped, and held firm on that price. So I actually ened up getting the car for $27,800 + $100 dealer accessories (mud flaps) + $218 DMV fees for $28,118 total cost (I think I forgot to mention the mud flaps in my original post.) Don't you just love the zero sales tax in Oregon! Getting the EX-L for right around $28K OTD still seems pretty amazing, I was very please to get one at that price.
It took a couple of days of contacting and haggling over the phone and internet with several dealers to figure out how low I'd be able to confidently go for, but it paid off I would say. If you are serious about buying, just let the dealer know you will buy that day for that price. Good luck! :shades:
Just picked up silver LX for out the door price of $25,548 at Honda Santa Ana! I was able to get the price of $23,456 or $1,844 below invoice. I could have bought EX-L for $27.5k but felt it was not worth paying $4k for leather, nicer wheels, sunroof, etc.
By the way, Santa Ana Honda's goal was to sell 300 cars this month and was very eager to close the deal today.
Hey, that is a great deal. My wife and I just test drove a Pilot EX-L, and we live in Massachusetts. Care to disclose the dealership where you purchased your Pilot? Thanks so much.
Jenk2649, I'm using the forum to research my new Pilot EX-L also. I was curious if your rate of $375 w/tax and $396 down was all inclusive, including tax, tag, license, inceptions, etc. Anything else they nailed you with? Thanks for the help, J
lawduck, thanks for all of the information. Much appreciated! I don't actually reside in Oregon, but it's a reasonably short trip to get a better deal than I can get locally. I've got a quote request in to Ron Tonkin and we'll see what happens there. I'd previously worked a Portland area dealer down to ~$28,700, but not anywhere close to your deal. Nice job, and congrats on your purchase. Thanks again!
Oops, sorry...the price does NOT include destination; my husband was doing the negotiations and I misunderstood him (or he mistated!). So sorry for the misunderstanding...my bad

Do you work for Hillside Honda?
The best quote I got for EXL in NYC is $28,500.
Is this a cash deal?
Maybe some hidden charges on the finance contract you didn't know?
