One recent poster got 900 over invoice for a new 530i. Combine that with only a 3% finance charge and the difference in monthly payment is not that much more between it and my 2002 3 series lease. Pretty good.

Other than the extremely high MSRP, this is a good time to lease a 5-series..

I live in eastern PA, and am working with Northern NJ dealer to decide between an X5 or a 530. Good gas mileage or poor? RWD or AWD? are the deciding factors.

  

Here are the details for a 36month 15k mile lease.

Next week I will go the CPO route with my 2002MY 530i. Since I posted last month on this subject, the MMR price has dropped over $400 to $27,711 (my lease buy-out is at $28,640). I have a local BMW dealer that has agreed to sell me the car at the MMR price (that is the price they claim they buy the car from BMWFS). We are still negotiating the CPO price, but it will not be more than $2,400 (I just had the brakes and rotors replaced under free maintenance program, so I am using this as additional leverage for dealer to lower CPO price). I will post final CPO price next week. I think the info should be helpful to others looking to buyout the lease. As I posted in the general topic forum, I will also buy new tires, Michelin PS2, out the door at $849 (includes mounting, balancing, free tire repair and 8.25% sales tax).

CPO pricing. If it helps negotiate the pricing I think that it is generally accepted that the CPO certificate costs the dealer $1195 and his total cost is this plus whatever parts and labor he has to put into it. But since apparently, you've done all the work, his "basis" seems to be the $1195 figure.

 

Having said this, my impression is that the dealers are significantly marking up CPO cars because I think people are scared, correctly or not, of repair costs on out of warranty BMWs. IMHO the marketplace will accept a CPO price roughly 4K above Edmunds dealer retail. Proof? Look at the figures in Edmunds.com and compare them with the CPO section of Bmwusa.com.

If you are concerned about driving in the snow, you'll probably have to get a winter tire/wheel package if you get the 530i.. Figure about $1000 or so for that.

 

Other than that, it basically comes down to which you would rather drive.. Nobody "needs" an SUV to get around in the snow.

 

Those both look like very reasonable lease deals.. You will be doing very well with either one.

Looks like a good deal.. Assuming all the figures are correct, your dealer is making some money, but you are still getting the car as cheap or cheaper than you can do on your own.. '02 CPO 530i are bringing anywhere from $33K-$36K, so your price looks great.

 

Are you going to buy the extended maintenance plan before your lease is up?

No $1500 extended maintenance plan for me. With the brakes and rotors done, I'm hoping the next 3 years (and approximately 36K miles) will only see 2 oil changes and one major service (and one more set of tires). I felt the extended warranty was a better bet to protect against the high cost of unexpected repairs.

 

Also, the BMWCCA literature claims they will send you $500 when you buy a CPO BMW and you are a member for at least one year. I will get more info on this the next few days.

Yes, I'm familiar with the program.. Not sure if you being the original lessee will make a difference.. And, it is BMWNA that sends you the money... That would be a nice bonus..

Checked with BMWCCA. I am eligible for $500 rebate on the CPO even if it is a lease buyout. However, you must be a member for 1 year. For me, my one year anniversary is December 29, which happens to be the same day my lease expires. I cut it close. The BMWCCA rep said that as long as I pick up the car from the dealer as a CPO after 12/29, I would be eligible for the $500. So, I will drop the car off on 12/28. I am told the CPO process takes 2 days and they give you a loaner. So everything is working out.

 

Moral: The benefit of joining BMWCCA not only gives you a great magazine to read (Roundel), a 10% discount on parts, but also cash back if you purchase or lease a new or CPO BMW. Great deal.

From what I understand the Sat radio is incompatible with the navigation system. You might want to chck into that.

Given the finance incentives, I spent last weekend looking for a ’04 325ci. With my specs (black on black, 5 speed), the search was short. Nothing in the area.

 

I was made an offer by a dealer that I’d like to get your opinion on. It’s a 2002 525i with the following specs: CPO, black on black, 5 speed, sports and premium packages, cold weather package, xenon, rear sunshade and the Dinan stage 1 upgrade (cold air intake and software). I saw the original sticker; the price of the car was $43.5k new. It only has 15k miles and is CPO’d until 2/08 (including Dinan parts). The offer is $29,600 and I can finance for 60 months at 4.9%.

 

Thoughts on the price? Thoughts on a 2.5 liter engine for a car this size?

Did you drive it? It would all depend on how much extra oomph you get from the Dinan stuff.. The price looks good, miles are low and it is CPO.. I don't see any downside, except the Dinan stuff might scare some people away when you get ready to sell or trade...

 

2.5 engine is a great powerplant.. Only you can tell if it has enough power for you.. nice options on that car..

In the 2005 on the 530 you can have both options.

 

We actually ordered the 530 and it is currently being scheduled for production.

I'm currently undecided between a new 530 or X5. Radios and Nav systems and their availability with this option, but not with that option, etc. are a small part of the reasons why I'm at a cross road.

 

Its good the Sat. radio and Nav are now available together in the 530, but does anyone know why BMW charges so much for that option? Does it have to do with the complexity of incorporating it with iDrive? I assume you get the standard subscription free for one year- correct?

 

Maybe the wrong board, but how hard is it to use the radio via iDrive? Particularly switching from CD to AM/FM to Sat., etc.

thanks to all for the infor on the new .00125 mf on a 530i. Payments went from 651 to 643 per month. It isn't much, but better in my parents' pockets than BMW.

To use the radio in a 530 you do not necessarily have to use the I drive except to set up your presets. Once that is done you can program one of the buttons on your steering wheel to switch between AM, FM, WB and CD (I do not know how satellite fits into this because I don't have it).

The steering wheel also has a preprogrammed button to change your stations or CD tracks. You do not have to use the I drive for your basic operations if you don't want to. You can also use the voice commands to change between AM, FM and CDs and to change stations,CD tracks and CDs. All options work well. The I Drive is not nearly as complicated as we have been led to believe and I am by no means a computer wizard.

I agree about iDrive. Much ado about nothing if you ask me. One thing to note here though is that voice commands are only available if you have NAV (at least in 04 models; I don't know about '05). Since satellite radio and nav didn't work together in 04, but do in 05 maybe this has changed.

Hi,

 

I ordered a 530 with a very good lease rate. I was told they will hold the rate for 60 days. The only problem is that the car will likely not be delivered until after the 60 days expire. When I asked the manager what happens then, he said we start all over!

 

DOes anyone have experience with this situation? I do not want to wait for something that is not a sure deal.

The manager is correct... If you make the deal today, and you can't take delivery before March 1st, you have to start all over.. But, you can always back out, if terms aren't favorable then..

 

There are no guarantees, but in the past, the lease deals on BMW sedans have been pretty good in March.

One thing though. I made the deal on December 16. Would I have the lease commitment to March 1 or to 60 days from December 16?

 

They think the production is running about 70 days so the car should be in late February. March 1 would be beneficial.

 

Can't the dealership guarantee the Dec rate if they choose to? Couldn't they just increase the residual from 62 to 63 to effect the same monthly price?

...... What that means is, most (not all) real Bimmer buyers aren't too excited about Dinan, 20" bling bling rims, hinky paint stripes or boom boxes, and they can be hard to sell, or at least take a looong time and the resale is "iffy" to say the least ...

 

                That said, with *you knowing* this upfront ~ always Buy and drive what you like ..................

I'm not positive... but, everything I've heard is until the end of the month in which 60 days occurs... You might check that with your dealer..

 

The dealership has no control over the residual.. that is set by the bank.. Sure, they could lower the price of the car to effect the same lease payment, but that would cost them money..

 

Your other option: Buy a car off the lot.

........ Right now, and probably thru the first week of January is the very best time to get your very best deal - in the vernacular of the business: it's "tumbleweed time" ...

 

              Meaning, you could fire a shotgun thru most dealerships and not hit a fly, especially if your north of the Mason/Dixon line ... Things like tax on floorplan inventory, incentives, factory kickers and getting future inventory mapped out is what that's all about on the dealer side .. on your side, you could probably see another $500/$1,000 off .. don't let them kid ya, like the "new" 7, the new "5" is still all dressed up with no place to go and dealers need to move em' ......... good luck.

I think you would negotiate from a stronger postion if you didn't come on as a payment buyer("don't want to pay over $450" ..a month). Find the car you like, do the math yourself, maybe between now and March save some cash for a down payment, etc. Maybe, just maybe, if you have no equity to put down, you shouldn't be in the BMW market anyway? Don't forget that this now four year old car is going to need some repairs, brakes, new sneakers, etc. With no cash reserves who is going to maintain it?

 

Incidentally, Silver/Black has got to be the most popular BMW colors.

nsxbob, the market price for a 530 may be very different from that of a 525iT. They are different cars with different features (with presumably different mileage). Look at Edmunds TMV or kkb.com for a good estimate based on options, mileage and location.

Just reached verbal agreement to purchase 2001 CPO 525i with 36k miles for 27k when dealer called to inform me that almost the entire car had been re-painted. I would never have known it from looking at the car - it looks great to me and drives great as well. They told me it was done by the prior owner but they detected it when they inspected the car through CPO process. The dealer tells me he does not detect any structural damage. Should I purchase this car? Are there any circumstances under which a car would need repainting that doesn't involve an accident? Is the price good? Thanks.

evidence of body work will lower the value of the car when YOU go to sell it a few years down the road. What happened that almost the entire car was repainted? I'd keep looking.

Thanks nyycarguy. They dont know what happened to the car and neither do I. I'm bringing it to a mechanic tomorrow. I just dont trust these guys anymore. Have you, or has anyone for that matter, purchased a CPO car that has been repainted? What if the mechanic tells me there's no evidence of an accident?

Run from this car... NO ONE repaints a car for kicks.... I guarantee it has had major body or hail damage..

 

If it was a Hyundai, no big deal.. but, a BMW? Figure it is worth at least $5K less than a comparable but un-repainted car.

I'd steer WAAAY clear, unless the price they offer is well below market value.

 

If you plan on driving this car until 200k and the mechanic tells you it's perfect, go ahead. But if you ever plan on selling this vehicle, you'll get hammered.
