Went back and saw the GP seats (thanks vc). Vehemently DISAGREE that they were worse. The pattern in the GP only covered the lower center of the seat. In the Malibu, it's the whole seat and EVEN THE HEADREST. Link below to refresh your memories.
Anyway, the only situation in my case in which I'd even encounter the cloth in the Malibu is in the Maxx LS (which is the better buy over the Maxx LT). Sedan-wise, for sure it'd be the LT. I just hope I don't find the UltraLux also laughable, 'cause then its a GP with leather (real leather). Have started posting in the GP forum just in case.
(On a roll tonight; just put up with it. I'll be nice.)
the seats in the new Malibu (and soon, Maxx) come from a French supplier. Now, at this point in time, how smart is that? They're taking it out on the poor Malibu (and us).
What Chevy is missing is a hatch for under $20K. If you've noticed, the Maxx starts at $22K and the Aveo starts at what? $9995 or something like that. The Cobalt hatch would be the perfect bridge between the cheapo $9995 Aveo and the $21,999 Maxx. If anyone noticed, the CR-V FWD LX starts at like, $18K. (That's no negotiating either!)
We're part of a consumer feedback board as part of the most respected auto purchase research site in the US. Isn't that why we're all here, and why the hosts both keep us in line and protect us?
GMs listening, with baited breath.
How do you suppose they quickly figured out the fabric in the GP was a bad deal?
BUT, kudos to GM for listening and acting quickly. Nice change of attitude. I'm impressed.
Now about that rear window washer & wiper option on the Maxx that I mentioned several months ago?
In case you just might have happened to wonder, no, I'm not a GM employee. Would have had to disclose that to the Edmund's staff (I'm sure) a long time ago.
HOWEVER, I am quite a bit in bed with GM (and had been with Honda; still am but not much; so that answers that), in that I do own a ton of GM stock and have a great relationship with the GM Card. This is not an ad for GM; just friendly advice.
If you intend to seriously purchase a Maxx in the next year (you know who I'm talking to), get a GM Card and run EVERYTHING through it. No joke. Gas, groceries, etc. Just finished installing a stainless steel kitchen (I'm a mostly in-shape foodie and ran all of that through it). Used $1500 in earnings on the infamous '96 (lemon) Monte Carlo and another $1500 on the '98 Malibu LS. You don't want to know what I'm looking at now in earnings total. BUT, with the current rebates, they do limit the amount which can be redeemed per vehicle. Still, I get a free extended warranty, and if you manage it right and quick, you might too. Plus, I believe there's a sign-up bonus right now. You'll figure out the website. It's the best affinity program going, trust me.
The rest of my relationship with GM lately:
1. Asked me to be on the final consumer sign-off on the '04 Malibu, which I declined. 2. Asked me to be on the final consumer sign-off on the '04 Malibu Maxx, which I declined. 3. Asked me to be on the final consumer sign-off on the '05 Equinox, which I declined. 4. Have invited me to breakfast with the top GM brass on 11/08 prior to the opening of the MIA Auto Show (oh boy), which I'm still debating.
The reason I declined the consumer input panels was my erratic work schedule. One week I'm swamped and the next I'm bored. I'm not reliable enough to handle that type of thing. But, you all know that.
This forum is better suited to my style. If I go to the breakfast, is there anything constructive you'd like me to pass on? DON'T reply immediately. Think about it.
Just kidding, but now that the baby's finally asleep (and probably Mom too), I think you might have had a touch of the weed. I'm contemplating a late night toddy; weed isn't me.
How on earth did you all of a sudden get us over to the Ion??? Come on.
Maybe the Ion has "super ugly cloth"; don't have a clue (and don't care).
I'm aware of the criticisms of the Ion, but that's not exactly what I was gunning for in my request. Malibu and Malibu Maxx requests only, please.
Wow. I post on the other Malibu forum here that GM reads this here place, come here and find wpbharry posting the same thing.
My "eerie meter" is going off.
Wonder if wpbharry has any Mazda connections, tee hee! (gotta get someone to understand how many sales they are losing by requiring tons of luxury options to get safety equipment like SAB/SAC...at least GM is NOT doing that...)
Yep, it is eerie. But, I can't help out with Mazda (my powers only go so far...).
On the other hand, since GM's been buying everything in sight lately, oh what the heck, might as well buy Ford and Honda too. Then Mazda comes along for the ride, and Jaguar, etc.
Don't laugh. Might happen. ANYTHING to sink Toyota.
dindak, OK, the former seats in the GP do look like the fabric that I threw up on as a wee child (our couch was burgundy). BUT, I still think the Malibu's cloth seats are way too psychedellic for us mere Boomer mortals. THAT'S why I say put 'em in the Cobalt & Aveo; the Millenials will love 'em. I can easily afford a CTS, but cars are a depreciating asset and prefer to focus on the appreciating type.
As far as hungry GM, notice I never mentioned Chrysler and Hyundai. That's 'cause we have plans. Once Daimler has had it (close), it'll spit out Chrysler with not a moment's regret and be left with an expanded US M-B sales network (wasn't that the whole point anyway?). Bye, bye Chrysler. No gov't bailout this time.
GM Daewoo (yoohoo) is taking on Hyundai and will win. Even though I laugh at the Suzuki Verona ads, it is a classy ad spot, and given the right push, will obliterate the Sonata. Step #1.
So, what are we left with after all of this feeding?
GM vs. Toyota. And we'll all be better off for it. Classic competition. Yes, I majored in Econ in college, and that's all you need to know.
Are you telling me that you actually had an opportunity to get on a panel where you could tell them to put in a rear window wiper, and improve the seat fabric design on the Maxx, AND YOU PASSED IT UP?? I'm now sticking little pins in my harry doll!
I really did pass up the opportunity. So, guess I'll be having a rough weekend. Maybe I can market "Harrybu" dolls with long pins attached?
Never fear, help is here. I have input. Assuming we're not blown away later this week by my good friend Isabel (now that would accelerate the new car plans, wouldn't it?), MIA Int'l Auto Show to the rescue.
Actually, just poked fun with my good bud on the phone who traded his '98 Malibu (90K miles) for a Hyundai Elantra (kids/financial reasons) and clearly stated that while it's his turn to drive to MIA this Nov (4 of us take turns, the 4 of us, that's what could be the glitch in the breakfast meeting), he's being overruled. I'm driving. His car was just recalled for brake failure. My car has never been recalled. If I'm going down, it ain't gonna be in a Hyundai.
I don't care much on how the cloth looks. As long as it's firm enough but not like a rock and a little soft but not like Lexus soft. A Maxx LS in Navy Blue would be fine. I'm considering a CR-V FWD or maybe one of those $9995 Aveos. (Maybe a Maxx) No, I don't have a GM card but I have one of those CitiBank cards that give you a rebate when you buy any new car. (ANY!!!) I used it on my Odyssey and I'm going to use it on my next car. Whatever it may be. (volvo, Acura, Chevy, ETC...)
GM must have bought a ton of options in the Uglycloth (TM Regd) futures market a year ago. They tried using it up on the GP until consumer resistance forced a change, now they are trying to unload it in the new Malibu. Yikes.
The seats are from a French supplier? And Anne Ascensio, GM's chief interior designer, is ex-Renault? Well, that explains it then. As anyone who has experience with French cars knows, they are uniquely bizarre and far-out. "La Virus Francaise" (TM Regd) has infected the General! Sacre bleu!!!
it won't stop me from buying it either, but if my friend Harry can get the pattern changed on the Maxx, we're driving down to Key West where I'll buy him dinner at Martha's!!
Wow...I stop back here after a few days and all of the sudden this site is one of the hottest on Edmunds. And most of it is about the seat fabric...which it just so happens is my #1 drawback regarding the new Malibu sedan.
I know this is the Maxx board, but to this point what pertains to the sedan is a precusor to the Maxx (or the best one we have at this point) so I hope the Mod gives me some leeway.
I was able to check out a 'Bu in the flesh yesterday and even went for a quick spin (dealer absolutely insisted...though I made it clear I'd be getting the Maxx since I need/want another hatch or wagon). Don't have a lot of time to give details now, but I can tell you this much...I came away extremely impressed. I don't care if it's Fred Flintstones feet motivating the engine, it's damn smooth and the chassis is rock solid. I lived with Vectra for a week in France last spring...and I'm telling you, the Malibu is NOT that different and, in some ways it's better than the Vectra IMO. It just looks much better in person than in pictures...at any rate it looks better in person than the Accord or Camry. My gut reaction is that it's meets or exceeds the Camry. So if it's GM's goal to tackle the Accord with the G6 leaving the 'Bu to take on the Camry, they have positioned themselves very well.
The seat fabric needs work...without a doubt. Actually, the fabric pattern is very European if you've ever seen the mid to lower versions of a range over there. The Grand Prix is a better example...where the inserts are patterned and the bolsters/headrests are solid. As others have said the Malibu is all patterns. Also, the leather/faux suede is not up to snuff as a top-choice seat cover. They need to upgrade both of those things. But regardless of whether Reg or others over emphasize the seat fabric, that's about the only downside to the interior, period. It's otherwise competitive in every respect. Most importantly, the seats themselves are excellent...it will not take much in cost or effort for GM to upgrade the cloth and leather covers. While they're at it, simply go to a contrasting dash (either darker grey/beige on the top and lighter grey/beige on the bottom...or do the top of the dash in black, a la VW)...and they'll have the interior nailed.
Overall impression...a quantum leap for Chevy which should end up meeting or exceeding their sales expectations. It could go from good to great with a number of cosmetic tweaks, including those mentioned above.
Excellent come backs. Didn't expect anything less.
HOWEVER, we have this little matter of Isabel to deal with. Been chanting all day.
And the chants are working. maxx, time to put the old 626 up on blocks and vacate. You did want that didn't ya? Solves that problem. Double-check the homeowner's insurance. I truly think NC is in for it, but she's a steerin NW, as directed.
I've been very impressed at the amount of posts on this site; considering the car has not even been built yet. Revka has had to break up a few brawls, and some of the conversations have been incredibly spirited. I can't wait to be part of this site when the Maxx actually does come out. In one respect however, I hope the site dies after only a couple of months of production like the Vibe site has. I chalk the Vibe's lack of participation to the excellent first year reliability, with nothing to complain about. For that reason, soon after January, I hope to never hear from you all again!! He, he, he...
well guess what? I think that the Malibu will fly off dealer lots. Well, it hasn't. Anyone seen the $1000 rebates GM has put up for the Malibu sedan already? The Maxx may be a different story, as it is something new and totally different. Then again, Honda always offers 2.9 APR at year end and Toyota literally gives the Camry away with $1200 cash or 0% financing.
maxx, watch it. This site might very well die after intro so that we don't have to keep flip-flopping back&forth. But , we all expect to be hearing from you as far as experiences with the new car. You're stuck with us for years.
Excellent post by jeffj77. I'm jealous too. Jeff, give us more when you have time. Doesn't matter which forum you post stuff in. You're dead on -- the sedan is pretty much what the Maxx will be.
maxx, you're in a bad mood lately; I'm well aware, but you did provide fuel for the fire re:Martha's. I'll take you up on it, but we might have to drive down in MY car (whatever that may be at the time). Been laughing my a** off ever since that post, and the sharpies picked right up on it. I assume they all know that Martha's isn't Ms. Stewart. But, I do believe we've found a new job for her after the prison term. Only downside risk is that she finds the old GP fabric "exquisite" and redoes her new Escalade ESV in it. Remember, she's even older than I am!! I assume she's upgraded that old thing (the "Burban"). Want to see how she waterproofs the ESV for her doggies.
Let's hope Ms. Stewart can save the GM bean counters by using up some of that ugly cloth left over from the grand prix application. The maxx sounds like the car for Martha Stewart, it has a neoprene luggage area, perfect for the doggies and the chickens too. The 'Burban might be bankrolled by General Motors, as we know it, martha gets everything literally for free. her ESV will be decked out in "tasteful and elegant" Pontiac Grand Am cloth, while her Suburban has that excellent Buick century cloth.
Need to watch the clock here, so I get the latest on "her majesty" at 11.
Don't have any friends between north GA and Northern NC (I do have friends with summer homes in NC, but they're all back home down here), so if I have to steer this thing (my sister is a part-time missionary in Africa and over there right now, doing the steering) to make landfall somewhere, that's the range, if it must. Northern NC will take out VA and DC (and hopefully dubya); this girl is HUGE.
Martha has been wined and dined this summer and last by the Donald (his Int'l Golf & Country Club - in WPB, not Palm Beach - is right down the street) in the hopes that she'll make the final conquest. She has CT, Maine and Long Island; she DOES need a Palm Beach mansion. She's being persnickety. Eventually, she'll be here and then I can appear daily on her show as the "car guy". See, the joke about Martha DID have more implications! First up: redoing the Malibu confetti seats.
You might be on to something. She DOES get all of her "trucks" for free. She might finally have to spend some of her own money on a vehicle. The Maxx IS right up her alley. She'll redo the exterior with fake wood panelling, and call it the "chicken coop".
Thanx for the post. Nice to hear the new Bu is competitive. I think you make a good point, Bu competes more with the Camry, the G6 with the Accord. Makes sense. GM needs to leverage it's brands to it's advantage.
jchan: how can you say the Malibu isn't selling when most dealers don't even have them yet????, and the ones that do, are only getting one LT for show purposes!! Also: the $1,000 rebate is very clever when introducing a new model; consider the fact that the Bu has to go up against all the '03s with $3,000 rebates, it makes sense to sweeten the pot right at the start, and to ensure that the consumer does not automatically go for the cheaper priced car.
harry: Martha's is my favorite restaurant down there. As for the other Martha, I'd welcome GM hiring her on to redesign the interior cloth. Hmmm, wait a minute; she'd likely make the cloth all black and grey vertical stripes!! (8 ^ (l)
It is very smart to throw a rebate onto a recently introduced or a very-soon to be introduced sedan. Makes the Camry frown with all those $1200 off deals that they have only on 2003 Camry LEs. The XLE and SE aren't eligible for the $1200. Ms. Stewart's Chevrolet Malibu Maxx LT will be free, of course. It will also have a neo-prene floor, which is perfect for dogs. Her ESV will need to be decked out by GM with all that leftover cloth from the Pontiac Grand Prix redesign. Her Suburban is fine- she has it already and isn't giving it up to GM.
She's a bi**c. Once she get's a hold of something, it's hers.
I still think she's got her "friends" zippin her around in her new Escalade ESV. GM knows that she's an image model, and milks it. I'm not complaining.
Are you listening, GM?? The Malibu Maxx and Martha. Perfect match, once she's absolved.
We have an ad campaign here! Martha could be shown caring about her pets and loading them up in her Maxx to take them to a show. Do you know how many more sales that would bring?
e-mail address for more info: "goodguywpb@aol.com"
Why?
I'll have those Martha bed linens all over the place. If I can find GP style, I'll do it.
What am I talking about?
Mark your calendars, maxx, dindak, johnclineii, and jchan2. You've all won a place in my heart and an invite. Truth be known, I need "Malibu boys" support. I'm not going to do this MIA Auto Show thing alone. Start checking airfares; leave the wife, kids, other significants, etc., HOME. This is one for us. Fly in sometime on Friday 11/7, depart sometime on Sunday (or even Monday) 11/9. Further communications at the above e-mail address on this matter. Now you knew it was coming, didn't ya?
closest dealer to have a Bu is in Pennsylvania. My dealer was open at 8:30 this morning. It is easy to see what they have and what they don't. It was on the way to the store, so I stopped. The dumb salespeople were pacing around wondering why nobody was buying their 'wonderful' Cavaliers!! Now you sound like an internet preditor harry. Does Edmunds check for that?? he, he, he
knows better. Not an internet "catch", and they know that. Predator? Thought you were one maxx. At least as far as your local Chevy dealers go. Sniff around some more on your way home. Thanks, bud.
Malibu allocation is based on prior year sales of the model. We received our first two Malibu LT on Tuesday. No sales talk - these are going to be winners! I'm looking ahead to the Maxx, I think it will be a cool alternative to a Sport/Cute and have better fuel mileage.
the reunion is in Columbus, OH so I can't be in Miami and Columbus at the same time! I'll check out the Maxx and Malibu either in Detroit or Chicago. I plan to be at either one.

Its from the General! Shame on you for expecting something tasteful and contemporary!
Weed alert at the GM design studios! Musta had the good stuff in there the week they designed the Ion. Floyd on the CD too!
Hey, lets ask em if they will improve the look of some of the center stack switchgear too.
