Most trucks with tow packages with 1/2 ton, 3/4 and 1 ton packages have an external transmission cooler--the Titan does not. So, what prevents the transmission from overheating as I pull through the mountains???
Second question---what is the gas mileage while towing? Haven't been able to find a salesman who has any figures.
Bottom line--am I better off buying a 3/4 Diesel for the towing capacity, braking assist, and fuel mileage?
He'll answer your questions about anything, has a wealth of experience and has reviewed the Titan.
With regard to towing mileage, I tow a travel trailer that is roughly the same weight that is far less aerodynamic than your boat probably is and I got around 8.5mpg going up and down a 6-7% grade outside of Phx, AZ. I suspect this will slightly improve as the engine breaks in further. Depending on towing conditions (terrain, headwind or not and speed) I expect to get between 7-9mpg towing around 6,500lbs.
The Titan does a terrific job for a 1/2 ton and the mirrors on the tow package allow me to completely see down both sides of the trailer while the bottom part of the mirrors eliminate all blind spots. The tow/haul mode provides plenty of "get up and go" power in lower gears to move a load while the breaks provided plenty of stopping power and the torque converter actually locks in 4th and 5th gear so you don't have to worry about burning up the tranny when towing in our out of overdrive.
With regard to vehicle type, it's really a matter of what best fits your needs and how much you want to spend. I feel like I got a great tow vehicle for under $30k while a diesel from the big three will run you close to $40k and up depending on the options you get. Sure a deisel will pull that boat with no problem but you have to put a lot of towing miles on one to break even. Net, if you live in Colorado and plan on going over 11k ft mountain passes then a 3/4 or 1 ton deisel is probably the way to go if you don't want to go uphill under 55mph, but I was very pleased with the performance of the Titan while towing our travel trailer.
I would love to test drive one, but i'm not gonna be in a position to buy until december so I don't want to give a salesman false hope...and deal with their phone calls (no offense bowke)
I don't think much of Mack as a game day coach...but he does a goodjob the other 6 days a week, and FWIW, the ags will win 8 games next season...you heard it here first
Thanks
This baby reminds me of my 67 Camaro.. (it's in a garage and hasn't been driven in years) almost anyway. The power, the noise, (good) is catching people's eyes and ears.
Nearly bought a Ford F-150 until I test drove and read up on Titan in of all places the NRA magazine!
Rednecks heads are turning!!! I can't wait to take this thing to Colorado Elk hunting!
This think enters traffic with no let-off..just ask my wife.
Can't wait to accessorize.
Just kind of drove by the dealer & literally in & out past the Titans. I can pretty much tell on the fly which ones they are now. That's pretty sad eh?!!
They have 6 KC's now, and they still have the $39K loaded CC that hasn't moved. Those KC's just aren't moving. Other Austin dealers similiar. It must be our area's turn for KC's!!
Karlconnell - Nice write up on towing, diesels & such; especially the last paragraph!
I've always thought that if someone knows about what ranges of loads a 1/2 ton can handle, has fair idea anticipating what loads will be hauled; and finds themselves asking if a truck can handle it, they probably need to go bigger. It's better to err too much capacity than not enough.
DUROCAB - NRA magazine?? As in Guns?!! I guess they review trucks and such for hunting? Do you remember what edition? Congrats anyway! Hey, tell us how 4x4 is off road when you get back!
Piopremier - Can you confirm your utility came with 3 cleats? How do you like the smoke color? Let us know more about your wheels experience!
Thanks! Michael

What size is the trailer? How many miles so far? Looks like maybe you have the optional toolbox? If so, how do you like it? Saw the dealer put one in. It rolls real nice on good quality bearings with one hand...
Thanks for sharing the photos with us. Very Nice!!
The trailer is 23ft long. I have about 1,500 miles on the Titan right now. I drove it all over the first couple of weeks so I could break it in before we took the trailer on a quick test run out of the valley.
We have a few accessories, like the toolbox as you mentioned, the sliding bed extender and a hood protector. The toolbox is awesome. We had to take our first one back as it had a defective lock mechanism but the new one works great. It opens and closes with a breeze and holds plenty of gear. It also has great seals to keep out water and hydraulic shocks to assist with opening and closing the lid. Well worth the premium in my opinion. The sliding bed extender can also work as a divider for those who don't want to spend the extra $ for the separate divider accessory.
I also plan on getting the fog light kit this weekend. I hear it's a breeze (10-15 min's) as the Titan comes prewired and is simple as mounting the new lights with 2 nuts and changing the turn signal with three screws.
I am worried I would go to sleep driving the Titan except for Rockford sound and when not playing .. the addictive exhaust note.
But to answer your question -- It rides great to me for all its worth.
Thanks
1) find the light switch.
2) turn it on.
;-)
I am probably going to buy a Titan, but I'm really confused about the satellite radio. On some models there is a button labeled "SAT" in the radio. Its a new product and I've asked several people about it, both online and at dealerships, and every time I get a different answer. I posted this on here earlier and the answeres I got were more informed than the dealerships. However i've been told so many different things I don't know what to think anymore. This is what I've been told.
1. The sat button means that the Titan is prewired for a satellite radio. I would have to actually buy a satellite radio and have it installed though.
2. The sat button means that the radio is good for satellite use and all I have to do is install an antenna.
3. The sat button means that its set up for satellite radio and the antenna is already installed in the truck. All I would have to do is get the service which is like $12 a month.
4. The sat button is inoperative right now and I would have to get everything installed either aftermarket or buy the dealer.
5. Finally the satellite radio is late availability and should be arriving in dealerships late February. When those models do arrive though they will be ready to go and all I will have to do is get the service.
As you can see I am totally confused. I think since its a new model and that there are a lot of people who don't know what they are talking about (especially at the dealerships!!)
If any of you guys know the real answer please tell me. I'd like to know if I'm going to have to put some money into getting this great option.
good luck.
Lol, that manuel was LONG!!! I did find it though. Right now according to the manuel you have to buy a satellite radio and antenna and have it installed.
I'll find out about the late availability. I had one dealership tell me he had several Titan's on order and that they would be equiped with satellite radio's and all I would have to do is get the service. I'm going to go ask again and find out if that is true or not.
I've had the "still today, unavailable factory SAT" in my 03 Murano for several months and it is fantastic. (The Inifiniti and Nissan parts in this case are identical in perfomance.)
The Grubbs Infiniti dealership in Dallas has an excellent parts department that is the exception to my first comment about dealerships not knowing about SAT radio.
Contact them or visit their web site for GOOD, SOLID, RELIABLE information that you can trust.
If your pre-wired (most likely) then the installation of the SAT tuner and antenna is very straight forward and easily done by anyone of almost any mechanical ability.
Here's a link to the Grubbs SAT radio page:
http://www.infinitiwholesaleparts.com/en_US/
I'd suggest you call them ank ask for the parts department and get specific answers before prdering anything.
Figures, as I emailed Nissan, and they said to contact the local dealer, and the Local dealer says I don't know.
Maybe I should just reconsider the F150, rather than taking a chance with a 1st year vehicle nobody knows about.
anyway...no, you cant do anything with daytime running lights, unless you just turn them on and leave them there. the LE has automatic headlights that come on at dusk and go off at dawn...is this what you are looking for?
Anybody know if the Titan will get this or have any idea when these will become available aftermarket? I saw the Big Tow mirrors are available so I was thinking that sooner or later you could buy the same thing with turn signal indicators. I like the feature and it's one thing I'm surprised the Titan didn't get considering even Ford has them now...
When I first saw the truck I too thought it was on the ugly side. After seeing it in person it looks quite nice, kind of a muscular look to it, IMO. Interior and exterior styling were quite nice and well finished off. The Rockford Fosgate stereo was great and had lots of Bass. I found the all the instrumentation and controls to be in just the right spot and well though out. Very much liked the stereo controls on the steering wheel. Grocery hooks are handy, and 3 LATCH positions are great if you have kids. There was a ton of room in both the front and rear of the cab which was really nice. The box is awesome with the rail and cleat system. Extremely well thought out. The external storage compartment, although small is handy for messy things you don't want in the cab.
Upon driving it I was really impressed with the smoothness between gears, my wife did not even know it had shifted 3 gears it was so smooth. Power was no problem at all even though I couldn't gun it due to the ice storm in our area, I didn't want to run the dealers new Titan into the ditch. I liked the automatic volume increase on the stereo and the convex mirrors on the bottom were also very handy. The running boards are excellent.
The box on the CC was a little smaller than I had envisioned, you can't fit something like a couch or a bed in it, however that may not be an issue with the bed extender and the rail/cleat system. The center console opened toward the passenger seat rather than backwards which may be a bit awkward for the passenger.
Not sure on the exhaust growl, my wife did not like it.
All in all I found very little I did not like on the Titan and it is still on the top of my list. I still have to test drive a Tundra DC and a Ford F150 so I am trying to stay objective. Hoping to test drive the Ford and the Tundra next weekend.
So far though I think that this is going to be very hard to beat, IMHO.
Didn't like the look of the F-150 (or the local dealer) enough to even bother test driving; although that is just my personal taste and I am sure it is a good truck. Chevy was just too outdated (at least that is my impression and opinion)and the Dodge is a Chrysler (enough said from my standpoint - my mind just can't get over the crap they use to produce). I also have to buddies that had 2001/2003 Dodges and they have had various problems which they shouldn't have.
Toyota, on the other hand, wasn't an option for three reasons 1. They didn't offer a front split bench, 2. the availability at the time I was looking/ordering wasn't gauranteed or known; and 3. Even though I only pull a travel trailer that is 5500-6500 lbs, I like pulling with a lot of room too spare so I liked the bigger engine and more pulling capacity of the titan.
Since then, I found out I couldn't get the front split bench in canada in the SE but they still don't know when they are getting them up here.
So based on these things, I ordered mine Titan in December and nothing I have read as made me doubt my decision. In fact when I test drove a base SE KC it only confirmed my original decision.
Also, has anyone gotten word on when traction control might be available for the 4x2 models? The brochure says "late availability", and I'm still debating on the need for 4wd having used it less than 10 times in the last three years on my current truck.
Jon
Good point about using the extender as a divider also!
I'm thinking if my CC,SE ever does arrive, I would later like to put on XE grille & bumper...
Thanks!
You're not too crazy about the chrome huh. I live in Phx where landscaping material companies are always driving down the highways and roads with gravel in their dump trucks while spitting stones at the front of your vehicle (even when you're not behind them) so the chrome provides a little more durability for me than the painted front end. Needless to say, windshields and touch up paint are hot commodity items here...
Chris
PS- Any sites with a good description of the VDC?
Thanks.
Aggie- you & I are thinking the same thing! A few years ago I exchanged taillights on my new Odyssey. I didn't like school bus yellow turn signals & the other Edmunds local member wanted the latest. We both we happy!! I'm getting(hopefully some day) popular pkg w/capt chairs. Bench seats are fine, I just wanted a little bit more flexibility for long boring drive home to N.Orleans...
Tung - Prices seem to vary considerably by supply & demand in the area.
My comments:
Well even though my Titan will be here Feb 4th I decided to go ahead and drive the new Ford F150. I kept an open mind as I could always cancel my truck so I had no pressure on me. While the interior has really changed on the Ford and they have a new type effort free tailgate the Titan still came out ahead on power and comfort to me. I could not rest my arms on the counsel or door rest and still reach the steering wheel in the Ford. This is important on long trips. I feel much more comfortable in the Titan especially with the captain chairs with the arm rests. I am very tall and there was much more leg room in the back of the crew cab in the Titan than the Ford. The Ford is a very nice truck, don't get me wrong, but the power difference I could tell right away with the Titan the winner. Anyway either truck is great but I am sticking with the Titan and can't wait for it to get here!!
Thanks for the AUX jack heads-up kj.
Jon
1. Do your research. Find out how much the dealer paid for the Titan. Learn about the factory to dealer "hold back" also.
2. Do not be pushed into a deal if you are not positive that you are getting the best deal that you can get.
3. The best deals I found at the smaller out of the way dealerships. They tend to be more eager for the business and seem more willing to negotiate. I bought my truck from a very small Nissan dealer that was 15 minutes down the road from a very, very large dealership that was located in a higher traffic area than the smaller dealer was located. The small dealer saved me big bucks, the large dealers seemed very arrogant and unwilling to negotiate.
Now I have a question... Has anyone on here ordered a Titan from the factory? I was told it will take 30-120 days for delivery. I also was told that the dealers only place an order once per month during the first week of the month so my Titan will not actually be ordered until the first week of February. Has anyone else been told anything like this? Will I be provided with updates about my order status from Nissan? I can't wait to drive my Titan.
I'd like to have the in-cab microfilter, but I think I'm gonna order the 4x4 XE CC mainly for pricing. The 4x4 XE CC almost has everything I really wanted except the powered mirrors and in-cab micro-filter.
Now the question, is any kit available for converting the ducts to taking micro-filters? I have very bad allergy to dust and pollens, so I desperatedly need those.
This week-end, I will be going to dealerships and start negotiating... Hope I would be able to get some nice price like militia_man.
Regards.
think of it this way...by asking a sales manager to give away holdback, its not much different than asking the salesperson to give up his commission to make the deal.
it leaves no monetary incentive for the dealer.
1.If I'm ordering out a vehicle that won't hit the floor for more than the time it takes the dealer to prep and deliver.
2.When the dealer starts bitching about how I'm stealing all their profit when and if I can get them close to invoice cost.
Other than those 2 circumstances, I'd agree that holdback money probably isn't going to get tapped into by the consumer in most vehicle negotiations.
1. I suggested that consumers learn about hold back so that if a Nissan dealer or any car dealer for that matter claims that the only money made off of a vehicle sale is through a sale above invoice they can call the dealer on his lie and put the dealer on notice that they are a smart consumer who has done homework on car shopping. Whenever a dealer started to whine to me about how they could not possibly give me a better deal I would bring up holdback and since my Titan is being ordered it will hardly even be on their lot. Even Titans that have not been specially ordered by a customer spend little time on the lot before bought.
2. The Nissan dealers I went to get a holdback check every three months according to them, not at the end of the year like bowke28 claims.
3. I was not suggesting that someone shopping for a vehicle try to get into the holdback money but if a customer brings up holdback during negotiations it tends to give the customer more leverage. It worked great for me, I'm sure it will work good for others.
The result is I order a Canteen 4x4 CC XE with
offroad pkg (will wait until May or so), XE prefer pkg (forced to order as part of off-road), and sprayed-in bedliner. This configuration gives me almost everything I need except powered mirror and in-cab filter. I don't like the chrome stuff because they don't look so good after the next few years (more maintenance in general). The interior should be comfortable enough or at least livable with the XE.
The price, I don't want to start another argument here because there sales people in this discussion. I posted in the Titan-pricing discussion. Please read it there. In general, I get good result due to militia_man post. Thanks again Militia_man.

I am seriously considering a Titan but I'm receiving flak from my in-law. He says buy American. I say GM makes their trucks in Canada and Ford has a lot of outsourcing from Mexico. I know Titans are made in Mississippi but does anyone know where most of their parts are from? I need some ammunition to debate this war.
