See my post on problems and solutions.

I make an mpg log every fill up and have ranged between 11.2 and 15.5 (3000 miles driving). HWY driving only, it has averaged around 14.5 mpg. Not very good. Please note I am also very easy on the gas pedal.

anybody have running boards, a roof rack, or fiberglass cover yet for their truck? I'd like some pics and prices.

    Thanks

until you get 5k-10k miles, your gas mileage wont stabilize. its a fact of life that new cars dont get their posted EPA mileage. be patient.

I read one post about a surging problem one had. I had this problem with an 82 Honda which was never fixed to my satisfaction. This concerns me, has anyone else had a problem with surging? This is where the car surges or fluctuates in speed when holding a steady rate of speed.

Once that mileage stabilizes give it another 10 or 20K miles and I bet that surge settles down too! <grin>

I know the Titan is has only been available for a few months now.....but has anybody heard anything about what upgrades/enhancements/changes Nissan is planning for the 05 Titan?

I am tempted to wait for the 05's as this will hopefully let the supply catch up to the demand and let Nissan iron-out any "new model" issues that may pop up.

When does Nissan generally roll-out its trucks for the new model year?
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
they worked 24/7 for 2 years to get this thing to market...the 2005 probably wont have any product changes. the only thing will be the late arrival of the electronic locking differential...but that will be before 2005.

normal model year changeover is in august/september...although the 2004 frontier didnt arrive till december.

the electronic locking differential will be available in April.

Is the AUX Jack only available in the Roc/Fos package, or is it standard? I just ordered a King Cab SE 4WD with Bedliner and mats. I have to wait 90 days!! Paid $500 over invoice. Very happy with that deal. If anyone knows the answer to the AUX quastion, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I've never posted to this site before, but I have read a lot of the messages. I am an engineer at the plant in Canton, MS, that manufactures the Titan, Armada, QX56, and Quest. I would be happy to answer any questions that anyone may have. By the way, bowke28, you've been doing a good job with championing the Titan. It's a great truck and is more than a match for any domestic pickup.

As to the question about the AUX jack, it is standard on the SE, even without the Rockford Fosgate option.

Glad to have you aboard. We welcome an "insider" who can answer our inquiries candidly. Thanks.

Question #1: Is the 5.6-liter engine rebuildable? Referring to the steel cylinder liners used, is there enough "meat" between cylinder walls to support a rebuild when the compression and wiper rings have torn down the liners to the point of replacement? Also, is the oil pump located in front of the crankshaft (behind the timing assembly), or is it located above the strainer in the oil pan? I assume that the 5.6 is using a timing chain. Not trying to be difficult; just looking down the road for the long haul.

    Thanks again.

A question regarding the ABSENCE of a two-tone(exterior)paint job option on the Titan. I realize I'm talking about a truck and all, but this option can really SET OFF the appearance of a truck. The Silverado/Sierra BOTH offer this option, and some of these color combinations such as the white/pewter, I believe, are very impressive. Just my $.02 cents, but what's Nissan's mindset regarding this? THANKS.
  • no1renonevadano1renonevada Member Posts: 13
I do not mind changes in login procedures. But now I find that I cannot use my old login name, renonevada, to upgrade to the new system. Is there a reason for that? Is there a way to get my old login name back? Or did someone else claim my login name before I had a chance to re-claim it?
  • daughesdaughes Member Posts: 12
    no1renonevada,
Sorry, but the engine is built in TN, not MS, so I haven't seen how much "meat" there is between the cylinder walls. I do know that the oil pump is in front of the crankshaft, and the engine does use timing chains.

    jerrymcshane1,
As far as I know, there are no plans to do two-tone paint jobs, but I am not involved in the paint process, so I can't say for sure. However, I do know that some dealerships will do two-tone paint jobs if asked. Maybe bowke28 could give you more information about that.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
its inadvisable to paint a new truck unless its by a conversion company. ie: explorer, southern comfort, etc...

nissan has never (that i know of) had 2 tone paint on any vehicle.

    daughes...

i was in jackson right before x-mas...went to the nissan dealer to haul a Z back here to louisville. i was blown away at the sheer size of the developed area around the plant. you are probably on the armada board too, but if you can give us some insight into the resonance issues over there, id appreciate it.

also, are there any plans for an extended wheelbase on the titan? ie: king cab long bed?
  • jochua48jochua48 Member Posts: 5
Thanks daughes for the AUX answer. Do you or anyone else in here have a feel for the waiting period? The dealer told me 90 days when I ordered it a week ago. Should I expect 90 days? more? less?
  • kjdenahykjdenahy Member Posts: 16
Your time line will all depend on what you got in your truck. I have found that most people have gotten their order in about 60-65 days. I ordered mine on Dec. 19th, the dealer ordered in on Jan. 6th. My delivery date is March 26th. I got the Air-Bag package, which is why I think it may be taking a little longer.
Dealers only put orders in once a month so depending on when your dealer puts in the order will let you know when to expect your truck.

By the way, waiting is PURE HELL!!

    Welcome to the Forum.

Can you verify what we are being told regarding the availability of the locking differential, is it still on target for April?

To the best of my knowledge, we will begin building Titans with the locking differential in April.

I am considering purchasing the Titan but I am concerned about the stereo.

Is there any solution at this time on the poor quality of the fm stereo. There is a lot of talk on other forums and many complaints have been filed with Nissan. One Nissan tech rep acknowledges the problem and they are looking into installing a fm signal booster into the vehicle.

Do you have any knowledge on the update of this problem?

THOUGHT YOU MIGHT FIND THIS ARTICLE INTERESTING:

    Analyst cuts auto profit outlook

Shares of Detroit's two biggest automakers and parts makers tumbled Monday after an influential industry analyst saw too many pickups and sport-utility vehicles on dealers' lots and lowered his expectations for second-quarter profits.

"Sales are below plan, despite rising incentives, and truck inventory is bloated," Goldman Sachs analyst Gary Lapidus said in his report Monday. He cut his second-quarter profit projections for General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., Delphi Corp. and Visteon Corp. He also cut the full-year profit outlook on all of those companies, except for GM.

At the beginning of the year, Detroit automakers, including the Chrysler Group, were expecting 2004 sales of more than 17 million cars and light trucks, based on economic growth of about 4 percent.

But in January, dealer sales indicated the year would yield only 16.1 million sales, and so far February's projection doesn't look much better -- about 16.2 million, Lapidus said.

Part of the problem was excessive optimism coming into the year, said Peter Morici, former chief economist for the U.S. International Trade Commission, who predicted only about 3.6 percent growth this year.

Since so many of the goods Americans buy are made overseas, the strong economic growth late last year -- fueled by President George W. Bush's tax cuts -- didn't create the usual ripple effects.

Many of those imported products are cheap for Americans as a result of policies in countries like China and Japan that keep their currencies artificially low.

"Currency manipulation robbed the president's tax cut of its punch," Morici said. "This isn't a great year for the economy. It's just going to be sort of a so-so year for growth."

The fact that so much of the industry's bulging inventory is in light trucks is an ominous sign of the damage inflicted by new Japanese offerings, SUCH AS THE MISSISSIPPI-MADE NISSAN TITAN, Morici said.

He estimates that 100,000 Titans a year will cut Ford's annual profits by almost $1 billion.

If the added competition cuts the average price of full-size pickups by $1,000 -- a figure similar to those Lapidus has projected over the years -- and Ford sells 900,000 or so F-Series pickups, that equals $900 million in annual revenue lost.

The same phenomenon also could hit GM, the Chrysler Group and even Toyota, which sold 101,000 Tundras last year.

Investors are always looking at a company's prospects for earning profits. Accordingly, Lapidus is handicapping second-quarter production -- a key factor in automakers' revenues, and hence, profits.

They could pare back production plans for the January-to-March quarter, but Lapidus said that is not likely "because the Big Three are sensitive to the message that a cut to" first-quarter plans "could send."

So it is more likely they would set a lighter-than-expected production schedule for the second quarter.

I've decided to buy a Titan in a 4x4 CC std. bed and would prefer the XE without the Big Tow pkg. (higher gear ratio = better mpg). I do plan to tow a boat (~4k lbs) and don't want to restrict myself from going somewhat heavier. What is it about the XE that makes it have a lower towing capacity (6,500 lbs vs 7,400 lbs) and GCWR (11,800 lbs vs 13,000 lbs) than an SE? Also, if I did get an SE with Big Tow is it just the lower gear ratio or are there some suspension differences too that increase towing capacity to 9,400 lbs? Since the Big Tow only comes with a Class IV hitch, do you really have 9,400 lbs. with it or do you have to use a wt. distributing hitch? Lastly, how much of a difference in mpg would I see with the lower gear ratio vs standard?
  • jochua48jochua48 Member Posts: 5
I ordered a King CabSE with bedliner and mats, no other options. So, hopefully it will be on the short-side of the wait cycle. You are right, I've only been waiting a week and it is SHEER TORTURE!
  • my0my0mymy0my0my Member Posts: 2
What's the scoop on curtain airbags for XE and SE Crew Cabs? I cannot locate an XE with an airbag on any lot. Full 6 passenger capacity is critical to me so I need the front bench seat. When I try to "configure" an SE with the airbag option I seemed to be forced to get bucket seats and/or add the high end sound, but according to the literature this should be possible. Curtain airbags and a bench seat is what I am looking for. Has anyone else been able to find a Titan with this combination?
  • daughesdaughes Member Posts: 12
but I'm not aware of the problem with the FM radio reception. As far as I know, the only reason for poor FM reception would be if the antenna connector was not fully seated in the receiver. But I assume that any dealer would find that problem if a customer complained.

Hey, jerrymcshane1, thanks for the article. If 100,000 Titans hurts Ford, wait until we increase the production. As long as y'all keep buying them, we'll keeping making them.

my0my0my, I believe that the SE is only available with side air bags when you get bucket seats. If you want a crew cab with bench seats and side air bags, you'll need to get an XE. I bet that is a rare option combination, which would explain why you can't find one, so you may have to order the vehicle you want.

    Hello daughes,

When does Nissan plan to increase production of the Titan? Will demand for the truck dictate production or have the bean counters already decided how many will be produced on a yearly basis?

I think the power sunroof is a great option to offer with the Titan.....WHY does Nissan force you to pick-up (2) expensive options, DVD Mobile Theater and Side Airbag Package, with the sunroof?

Is it possible or will it be possible to order the sunroof without the other two options? Its great to have an inside guy on the forum....welcome!

Hello dauges,, Could you tell me why its difficult to get my door to shut with the windows up it seems there is to much pressure in the cabin because if I crack a window they shut very easy. And is the VDC something the dealer could install. By the way ive had so many people stare at this sweet ride its tough to stop smiling.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I saw one on the dealer's lot yesterday. Frankly, I think this may be one of the best kept secrets out there. The vehicle had a MSRP of a bit over $29K, and has virtually everything I would want.

I know most people will be looking at the upmarket SE and LE models, but the (not so) basic XE is also worth a hard look IMO.

  • texaszachtexaszach Member Posts: 119
R.S...I do like the front end look of the XE, but the problem I run into is I want the captains chairs which are not available on that trim level. Are you going after that XE?

Daughes, Bowke...Over coffee this morning I logged on to the Nissan site to build my SE, April is looming ahead. OK, so I'm a tad bit early! The build configurator was not working this AM. I've been waiting for the electronic locking differential to become available. I read a post under Titan Buying Experiences which stated the ELD may only work in 4 Low, is this fact or fiction? Same poster has correspondence from Nissan stating April 4 as the target date for ELD equipped trucks to roll down assembly line. Under the attributes listed on the Off Road Package, Nissan has what they term "rear active brake limited slip." Am I correct in assuming this is merely another name for ELD or are we talking about two separate items here?

Daughes, ever take a trip up to Tunica for some wagering at the casinos? I was there in 2000, making a point to visit all 11 (if memory serves) gambling establishments. Felt,it was my duty to help the Mississippi economy. Future contributions will be made instead by purchasing a Titan!
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I'm not currently in the market, but if I was, I would seriously consider that model. I think it's an excellent bang-for-the-buck.

BTW, it does have a huge front fold-down center arm rest with a large storage area, I believe. I do like having 6-passenger capability, for when those needs arise. I think the driver's seat is much the same as the SE model.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Does Nissan offer a hard locking bed cover and a rubber bed mat for the Titan? I didn't see any mention of either in the Nissan Titan brochure.

    Bob
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
hard tonneau cover is done aftermarket. rubber bed mat is the same.
  • daughesdaughes Member Posts: 12
    Tripowertom,
Titan production levels are determined by demand to a certain extent, but are limited by the production capabilities of the plant. The capacity of the plant is currenty 400,000 vehicles per year, but that volume must be split up by the Titan, Armada, QX56, Quest, and Altima. So right now, we can't even come close to matching the production levels of the domestic trucks. However, if demand stays high, there is always the option of expanding the size of the plant. Plus, we've been working a lot of Saturdays to increase our production. Regarding your question about options, I don't understand it either. I'm sure those beancounters you mentioned have something to do with it. Lately, I've been considering getting a Sentra SE-R Spec V myself. I want ABS, but to get it I must also get a sunroof and a Rockford-Fosgate stereo. Go figure. By the way, do you own a tri-power?

    Titanguy1,
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Titan. Doors are typically harder to shut with the windows closed due to the pressure build up that you mentioned. Slamming a door shut will cause a quick increase in the pressure of the cabin. This pressure will resist the closure of the door. If a window is cracked, then pressure cannot build, and the door will shut more easily. Regarding the VDC, I don't think that a dealer can install it. It would require a new wiring harness. Also, I got a lot of stares when I drove pre-production Titans on the roads near the plant. My favorite was when I pulled up to red light next to a new Tundra. The guy driving it looked over at the Titan, and his jaw dropped! I imagine that he was trying to figure out what it was, and why didn't he test drive one before he bought his Tundra! Haha!

    Texaszach,
I'm not sure if the ELD works in 4LO only. I'll need to look into that. Also, I don't think that "rear active brake limited slip" refers to the locking diff. Limited slip diff. and locking diff. are two different things. By the way, I've never been up to Tunica, but I have been to the gambling boats in Vicksburg a few times. It's much closer to Jackson. Casinos aren't really my cup of tea, but thanks for doing your part to increase Mississippi's tax revenue!
  • texaszachtexaszach Member Posts: 119
I figured that we are talking about (2) different animals, limited slip and locking differential. If the electronic locking differential only works in 4 LO, as a poster wrote in the Titan Buying Experiences thread, then I'm not sure I need to wait on it. I can't remember the last time I had to use 4 LO on any my 4x4's. My thinking is that the rear brake activated limited slip works by applying the brake on the wheel which is slipping, therefore sending power to the other wheel. I appreciate the clarification on the ELD once you find out.

I've been to Vicksburg as well, it pales in comparison with Tunica. I don't get the same enjoyment dropping a few bucks at the casinos since the economy went south, post 9-11-01.

And Daughes, put the Sentra dream aside, spring for the 350 Z, ok?

    Regards,

    Zach
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I think the optional bed tie-down system is great; same with the removable rubber floor covering on floor track. Question: Where do you store that removable rubber cover? You would think Nissan would have though of a place to put those two rubber covers when they're not on the floor. Not having a place to store them, is just asking for them to get lost.

    Bob
  • texaszachtexaszach Member Posts: 119
Are they color keyed to the exterior paint OR a standard color (preferred, such as black or gray?

I think it would be the later as they "weather" better.
  • daughesdaughes Member Posts: 12
The ELD only works in 4LO, so you don't need to wait until April to buy a Titan if you don't think that you'll need the ELD. Also, the spray-in bedliner is black.

By the way, I would love to set the Sentra dream aside and spring for the 350Z. Unfortunately, I can't put 2 car seats in the back of a Z, plus the Spec V is about $10K cheaper. That'll buy a lot of diapers, you know.
  • bknightbknight Member Posts: 5
Does the Canton facility offer tours for outside enthusiasts? I would like to see how they assemble the Titans and would be willing to travel to MS sometime if I could get in.
  • daughesdaughes Member Posts: 12
Plants tours are not currently available, because we are still preparing the Altima assembly line for production. Sometime after the Altima launch in June, we will begin offering plant tours, maybe in late summer or early fall.

Hi Dauhges, Yes I was actually lucky enough to find and purchase a '65 GTO convertible out in sunny dry New Mexico. The car was originally a 389 4-speed 4-barrel car....but it has the tripower now! The sun had really destroyed the interior and all the rubber but the frame, floorboards, trunkpan and sheetmetal were as solid as day one. The restoration should be complete this summer....it would have been cheaper to restore and old Chris-Craft cabin cruiser.

Do you work on or have access to the Titan production line? I am thinking about placing an order for a Titan and it would be neat if you could post updates on the truck as it went down the line.
  • bearbrawnbearbrawn Member Posts: 19
I won't have time to surf the web anymore when my Titan is delivered.

It has FWD only - when the rear wheels are airborne...
  • dmuttdmutt Member Posts: 48
FWD is referring to Four Wheel Drive.
  • akjbmwakjbmw Member Posts: 231
    Usually:
    FWD is Front Wheel Drive
    RWD is Rear Wheel Drive
    AWD is All Wheel Drive
    4WD is Four Wheel Drive
    2WD is Two Wheel Drive

Then there is the 2x4, 4x4, 6x6, ad nauseum...

Hi daughes, Been waiting for the electronic locking rear differential since a made a deal for a Titan LE kc in December. My dealer did an order for it this past Friday figuring March order, April build, May delivery. With April 4 sited as the magic day for the locker they figured this would work out. Is there any way you can keep me posted as to whether the April 4 date is actually the date that the first one goes in and secondly, does this all seem realistically the correct info? Thanks, Bill...Ur info is surely a great insite and enhances this site.
  • texaszachtexaszach Member Posts: 119
Bill, I've been waiting as well, HOWEVER, Daughes was kind enough to confirm that the ELD will only work in 4-LO. Otherwise there is a "rear active brake limited slip" included in the Off Road Package which I would think would be more of a useable feature. Just food for thought, had I known this before I probably would have ordered last month.
  • billarnoldbillarnold Member Posts: 9
Thanks for the response. Yes I am aware that it is only operational in 4-Lo. My information even says that it is only operational in 4-Lo low gear only. Still a feature I will wait for. In many instances it may be the last resort before a hike and a tow truck. Thanks again for the input.
  • texaszachtexaszach Member Posts: 119
Duly noted my friend, I can't remember the last time I used 4LO, so it's not that important to me, but sounds ideal for your situation.

    Carpe Diem!

Daughes, Are you aware of the bedliner problems people are having (bonding, peeling, etc.) as reported over on titantalk.com?

If so, are there any improvements in the works?
