Most seem to advise 2-3% over invoice price on vehicles with hold back and slightly more on those without a holdback.
Certainly not 8%.
While it might be frustrating for you that Internet shoppers are looking for the best deal, regardless of your commission, there are plenty of suckers out there that you can still sell a car at full MSRP.
Not to mention all the chumps that you can sell into horrible financing deals and get a nice little extra profit.
Or the high dollar warranties and extras that get sold with many cars.
Ya, not feeling to sorry for the poor sales person who gets only $100 commission on a car.

But at 7:30pm we drove off in our new 2009 LE Murano - Platinum Graphite, with all the bells and whistle except for Nav and DVD for $34,900 (plus tax and $90 license fee). It took an extremely long time through the finance department so they also offered us a $25 gift certificate at a local restaurant, 2 free tanks of gas, and tickets to the Brewers game of our choice from the owner! Now that is what I call a great deal and great customer service. This was in Milwaukee at Rosen Nissan.
If you are buying in Milwaukee or Illinois check out Rosen.

Can I expect better .. the doc fee is a killer but the sales price is already into the holdback.
On one hand -- I'm pretty sure that the salesperson's commission is the least of my worries when I negotiate a price.
On the other -- if I was a salesperson, I'd allocate my time accordingly based on my compensation. If you're wondering why your salesperson won't give you the time of day for post-sale issues after your below-invoice deal, that's probably why.
(I think this was a fair deal)
The dealer has offered a protection plan - includes:
auto car wash for life of car ownership (one a week)
undercoating & soundshield (whatever that is)
rust protection
paint sealant
interior protection
all for $997.00
Should I do this & do I need it???
It sounds like a good deal to me
please let me know what you all think about this
Thanks

why do you think keep the $
The last Vehicle I bought was 8 years ago so I'm not up on all this stuff
Is any of it worth it or is the vehicle built well enough to fight off rust etc..
just for my own education
thanks for the reply
scott
"Undercoating" - an old-school method of preventing rust and corrosion from the undersides of vehicles. This is not releveant anymore on new cars and the exposed metals are treated to resist normal exterior conditions.
"Soundshield" - I have no idea what that is, so naturally I think its a pure scam. My only thought is that is some sort of coating intended to eliminate excess noise. The vehicle is manufactured to be quiet on its own basis and you shouldn't have to do anything above and beyond that on a quality vehicle.
"Rust Protection" - see my "undercoating" comments above. New cars don't need rust protection as their paint and exposed areas are treated from the factory.
"Paint Sealant" - This I know is a bunch of BS for sure. Paint comes from the factory with high-quality clearcoat that is strong enough to stand up to environmental conditions. Keep a good coat of wax on top of it and you'll have no problems for 8 years, or 16 year, or more etc...
"Interior Protectant" - They charge you the equivalent of $100-$200 to scotch-guard the fabric or put leather-sealer and conditioner on the inside. You can go to AutoZone or Wal-Mart and buy the same stuff for $20 and do it yourself in 20 minutes.
"Auto Wash" - This is the only one I could see having value. But you'd need to be close enough to the dealership to use on a regular basis to recoup your money and also make sure they are washing it correctly...ie...not using damaging brushes and actually doing a good job.
I really don't blame them for trying to sell it - after all dealers and salesmen are there to make money. Apparently enough of the unwary buy to make it worth their while.

I also got a replacement policy for those very expensive 20" wheels. For five years I get at least two flat incidents and one replacement from any Nisssan dealer in the contiguous US. My cost per incident can't exceed $1600. That takes a load off my mind and my wallet.
Just when I thought I was tired of driving I am in love again. This SUV is great and I am glad I stuck to my guns and got exactly what I wanted because it is more than worth it.
I'm looking for a tinted bronze SL w/premium package only [& mats and splash guards], and its apparently a tough find. Found one, but it sold before I could get on it. Told the dealer if he found one to not add the protection package.
None of the dealers were aware of an April rebate.
I don't think all of the internet sales folks are actually searching for me, so I will expand my dealer search, and also participate in the search myself.
Is there any way to just do a specific vehicle search, rather than searching each dealer's inventory?
Whats the protection package? vehicle etching??
if you go on nissan's website.. you can search the inventories of all the nissan dealers in your area.. you might find the car you want.
For protection package see #1636 above. Window etching is a new one to me.
I've used the dealer inventory search via Nissan's web site, but it is kind of ponderous to review 70 dealers [400 mile radius] one dealer at a time. I was hoping for a more efficient search process.

Best car I've ever owned, atleast from an initial quality perspective. All my friends want one now.
It's a starship on wheels.
It feels and looks like it's nuclear powered, but is disappointing it still has to rely on a 100+ year old internal combustion engine technology.
The lesson I learned from this purchase is to do your homework and offer a price in the lower range of the holdback and make THEM say "No". If they do say No, then you take that number to other dealers and see if they will accept it. Tell them you know what the invoice and holdback numbers are on the car because you found them here on Edmunds or other similar web sites.
The sales manager at one point actually brought out a sheet that listed the invoice prices AND holdback amount for the car I wanted and essentially told me, "what do you want to give me?"
DO NOT let them talk to you about monthly payment amounts, interest rates, or trade-in values. Your SOLE focus is on the bottom line price of the new car BELOW INVOICE.
I was nice and gave them about $550 in holdback money, which is a profit for them on top of any bulk purchase profit the owner makes from Nissan (which we never see the data for). Apparently the salesmen make their money from whatever is offered/paid on top of invoice price... otherwise the two salesmen that helped me split a $100 default commission for anything sold under invoice.
Car dealers want to move cars off their lot so they can buy even more cars at a LOWER PRICE from the manufacturer. Yes they want to try to make some money on each individual sale, but THEY DON'T HAVE TO.
When I was presented with the finance guy, he went through his standard presentation of extended warranty, LoJack, upgraded security system, paint sealant, upholstery protectant, window etching, etc. I said "No" to all of them and I replied that I would only pay $1,000 for the 7 year / 100,000 mile warranty. He initially informed me that warranty was $2,700 but said he could offer it to me for $100 over his "cost" of $1,581. I held the line at $1,000 but he wouldn't budge, nor would he be willing to take an allowance out of the dealer holdback to make up the $581 difference.
In the end of the finance discussion I wasn't able to get the warranty for $1,000, nor did I purchase any of the other items he was offering. But obviously I did learn where his line was for nearly all of these upsold items.
I have excellent credit but I was only offered 5.9% interest (mainly because it is a new model) so I opted to pay cash instead.
So I'd like to hear from all of you if I should:
1. take the finance guy up on the $1,681 extended warranty for 7 years / 100,000 miles?
2. if I should purchase a different warranty elsewhere?
3. or not purchase the extended warranty altogether?
All in all, I learned a lot, I finally purchased a car "the right way" so I didn't pay any more than I really had to, and I got an outstanding vehicle.
Please ask any questions you like.

I did a bit research on extended warranty,
* dont take warrantly online (most of the companies have bellyup in the past )
* ppl are advising to take the nissan gold warranty. (that depends on your long term commitment to the car ..etc.. )
I am about to negotiate with my dealer today.. i think i will opt out of the extended warranty unless they offer me for 1000$ :-)
I have done my fair share of work searching around on these topics and found that there are several reputable online warranty companies out there. Warranty Direct has been in business for over 25 years and is considered one of the best, for cheaper prices than the dealers will sell to you for.
I think by saying "don't take warranty online" you are letting a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch. That's like one person who had a problem with their CVT in an older Murano stating "Don't buy Murano's, they have transmission problems".

Thank you.
If it's a manufacturer's warranty that's backed by the manufacturer and can be honored at any of the manufacturer's dealers, then it's probably a good idea to shop online and at dealers to compare prices.
I would be much more hesitant to buy a third-party warranty, be it in person at a dealer or online. That's where I've heard of people losing out because the company behind the warranty went bankrupt.

I bought the Murano SL yesterday and LOVED the dealership I worked with. My salesman Mark was great! I wish I could work with people like those at Courtesy Nissan in Richardson, Texas every time I buy a car. They were a "no pressure" dealership. Very honest - explained everything and being a female and not very comfortable with the buying experience they made sure I understand every fee, charge, etc.
I think it's worth your time/effort to try this dealership. They're THAT good to work with. I did my homework and I think that it helps to understand what the invoice prices are for your car and add ons and have print outs to take in with you of your research you've found online.
Right now (March 2008) Nissan has a promotion for their dealerships to hit a certain number of sales by the end of this month b/c this is Nissan's 50th anniversary. This is the perfect time to get a good deal if you can do it before the end of the month.
You can get the Murano SL for invoice or close to it IF you time it right. Go in at the end of the month when they are trying to get their numbers up. That may work in your favor. I can't tell you how great this dealership was to work with. I felt like they were more than fair with me, very upfront and honest about pricing - it was a "no tricks" kind of buying experience and I am so happy with my purchase.
I bought the 2009 Nissan Murano Black with Black leather, splash guards, dual moonroof, premium package, technology package, leather package, and floor mats. Had a destination chg of $745. The MSRP on the car was 34,540. The invoice price on the car is $31571 and that is just to help you to know what room you have to play with. (you can find the invoice price of your car on many websites online)
I am pumped to pick up my car Monday - they are tinting my windows and adding a pin stripe. If you want to email me, I'll send you the contact information of the guy I worked with. He is awesome and I am a hard person to work with!
Courtesy Nissan - Richardson, Texas (near Dallas)
I doubt there will be any rebates on the murano anytime soon since it is in such high demand right now. I would settle for nothing less than $300 above invoice and anything better than that is a great deal! I'm not even going to tell you how good of a deal I got. It is unreal.......and I promised I wouldn't tell how good they were to me. But, my advise is to do your homework - remember you get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar, and be willing to leave if you don't get the exact price or car you want. Don't settle. This is a huge purchase - You should feel great about your deal when you leave.
Great salesman, great dealership. Courtesy Nissan is the way to go....
I had a terrible experience earlier in the year when first shopping for the Murano at Bankston Nissan in Irving. I will never go back. The people I worked with were pressure salesman and I felt they were playing a back and forth game with me.
Once you settle on your "price" here are the additional fees you can expect to incur. This is what I paid:
Sales Tax: Mine was $1671 in Texas
Dlr Inv Tax: $64.14
License Fee: $70.80
Title Fee - $33.00
2 Year State Inspection: $21.75
Document Fee: $50.00
Deputy Fee: $5.00
Best of luck in your buying experience.
I took delivery of my car, it looks and feels so good. Murano rocks......you hardly hear any noise inside, it has lot of feature which i have to go through.
I had posted my quote before, let me break it further.
SL + FWD + SL-A + SL-B +Moon roof + splash + rack bar + floor mat + carpet protector : 34825
Invoice price : 31762
my price : 31392
all other fees are same as yours, but wonder how come the Sales Tax is so low for your invoice price ?
Anyways i got a full tank of gas, +2yrs of oil change (ask for it, they will give it you )
Bottom line, courtesy nissan is the best nissan dealer in Dallas.
Price breakdown was MSRP $40,205, invoice $36,845, vehicle price $36,224 ($621 below invoice). In addition there was $100 dealer processing fee and various state TTL charges.
A very low pressure dealership. Up front with their pricing and none of the "come in and lets talk" BS I encountered with some dealerships. Price/deal was arrange before arriving at dealership. In and out of finance in no time. Threw in free wheel locks and left with a full tank of gas. I highly recommend checking out this dealership if in the Washington / Baltimore area.
The other dealership I might recommend if in the NOVA area is Sheehy in Springfield, VA. The internet saleperson was above board, very responsive, and close on price. But didn't have one with navigation in color I wanted.
Options: Nav/Tech package, moonroof, floor mats, splash guards, roof rack cross bars.
MSRP: $40,110
Sale Price: $36,546
Second Nissan I've bought from AutoCenters Nissan in Wood River, IL.
Nissan of Chantilly was EXCELLENT – very responsive, professional, no pressure, and happy to work with such an informed buyer. Everything was done via email. Ours salesman gave me a good quote on a leftover 07 but it had Sirius and I wanted XM. He offered to look in the inventory for an 07 with my desired options and found only one in the DC area that was close and said he’d bring it to his dealership. At this point, we were going to go with another dealership due to XM but as were finalizing the details, the GM from that dealership called and said the wrong car was pulled from system and the quote provided was incorrect. The new price was $2400 more. I was not happy about this but it did work out to our benefit. Our salesman from Nissan of Chantilly informed me since they did not have an 07 with XM that I was looking for, they would match the Fitzmall $600 under invoice on any 09 they had in stock. We went in today to purchase an 09 Murano SL AWD with Nav, Premium Package, Tech Package, Leather, Moonroof, Splash Guards, and Floor Mats – MSRP $37,990 and Invoice $34,615. We couldn’t justify spending the price difference between SL and LE for only a few additional items (20” tires, chrome roof rack, wood grain, memory seats, telescoping steering wheel) after adding all the options on the SL.
Apparently the SL we came in to buy had already been sold to another buyer as they were there too.
We had an excellent experience and were in and out quickly; going through the paperwork and finance was a breeze. I highly recommend Nissan of Chantilly if you’re in the market for a new Nissan today. You won’t be disappointed!! Here is the breakdown of our beauty:
2009 Murano SL
Sapphire Blue with Black Interior
Navigation System
Dual Panel Moonroof
Splash Guards
Floor Mats
Destination Charge - $745
Total MSRP - $39,920
Invoice - $36,628
3% VA Sales Tax Plus Tags/Title
Processing Fee - $499 (This is high since MD is only $99 – this is automatic in the contract but you can negotiate lower into the price of the car.) Nissan of Chantilly offers free car wash for life, free lifetime state inspections, concierge to the airport, pick-up/drop off at work for oil changes.)
-I had 5% financing with Navy Federal Credit Union. The dealer was able to beat it at 4.75% with Chevy Chase Bank – we have excellent credit.
In my vehicle search there are dealers who would go into the $500-$650 below invoice range. Not all dealers were willing, but there are enough that no one in the DC area should be paying invoice or more, at least through the end of March.
Based on reading this forum, it's apparent that one can buy a Murano at or below invoice price fairly easily. Why are they selling at invoice and nowhere near MSRP - because demand is not strong. If demand is not strong - I would think Nissan would begin offering incentives sometime over the next couple months.
I suppose the argument against this is if Murano's are not stockpiling in dealer and mfr lots and are selling at an appropriate rate (albeit at invoice price).
My guess, and this is pure speculation. I think Nissan wants to make sure that the 2009 Murano lauch is classified as a success, so now that supply is more than adequate, they are rewarding based on sales volume.
Manufacturers report unit sales each month. They don't report gross margin (maybe in their annual reports, but not with monthly sales volume) or average selling price.
The finance manager told me that the preferred version covered the navigation and stereo, above what just the gold coverage had... so that's what I bought (into).
However, I just looked at the info about the preferred warranty coverage on this web page:
http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/warranty/nissan_security_plus.html#nissan_- - - security_plus_gold_preferred
And it shows that preferred really just gives you roadside assistance and a few other bennies that I don't really care about... the navigation and stereo seem to already be covered in just the Gold warranty.
Here is the Gold Preferred warranty detail sheet:
http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/docs/Gold-Preferred-New-Vehicle-Service-Ag- - - reement.pdf
And here is just the Gold warranty detail sheet:
http://www.nissanextendedwarranty.com/docs/Gold-New-Vehicle-Service-Agreement.pd- - - f
Somehow I think I got snookered for the extra $200 based upon a "white lie."
Ah, I read in the agreement that I can get a full refund within 60 days of purchase (if I haven't used the service), if I so choose. So what do you all think?
-You, today.
Looks more like $304 + tax? ...to get that 'preferred' package. If the difference is truly roadside assistance I'd ask for the difference back. You shouldn't need roadside assistance on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles... They will bring $5 worth of gas tho..
AAA would be cheaper I imagine.
