    Farout,
    On the Jeep.com site an "07" Wrangler does have a CRD as optional power but only for export outside CONUS(Continental U.S.). I e-mailed customer relations about the lack of foresight in providing this engine here in U.S., there response by a person who obviously did not know that CRD was optional on exports. I say that because she categorically stated that "no Wrangler's are available with the CRD"... this in spite of the fact of CRD being shown as option on export models. :confuse:

    Farout: Thanks for the advice I will definitely check out the warranty offer. I just talked to the service manager on my Liberty. They are replacing two pistons and the head as well as all four glow plugs and the two cylinder sleeves. They are taring the engine completely down to make sure the got all of the debris out of the engine. I should have more details later this week, he's telling me he hopes to have it back to me by friday. The service manager also told me that the latest service bulletin came out this past Friday the 14th on the transmission shudder. I don't have a TSB number,it calls for replacing the torque converter and the transmission sump. They told me as long as my was all ready torn down and since I was still having problems with the shudder that they would replace those parts as well. I can't tell you how great full I am to be working with the dealer that I am since I didn't buy this though them. They have gone above and beyond to make this write for me. Even with the problems I have had with this vehicle I will buy another Jeep/Dodge and it will be from this dealer. Wayland Chrylser dodge Jeep. Wayland Michigan Kellybob

    My 06 CRD has 1400 miles on it and I got 23 Mpg average (mostly open road 45 to 60 mph) from the last tank and I got alittle over 22 on this tank. This tank might have been less because it was a lot of city stop and go and it has been hot (between 85 and 95) and my wife is pregnant so you better believe that the AC is ON if she is in the car.

    I love my CRD. It was between this or a diesel truck and for the money there is no comparision. Besides what do I need with 500ft-lb. All i have is a single axil 8' trailer

    I think if a state or city is going to invest 75,000,000/yr in any type of public transpiration they should investigate in Maglev technology. The train floats inches above the track which makes it virtually friction free. Talk about fuel efficient. If you could erase all the friction loses just from your tires to the road not including drive train losses (which by the way the maglev will not have either) you could probably get 5 to 10% increase in milage. The problem with the magnetic mass transport is the same with all great sweeping changes, infrastructure. The trains would be supper efficient with essentially no friction loses; lining all the tracts with supper high power electro magnets would be incredibly expensive. This is the same problem that we face with Hydrogen. Well that and the idiots who want to make it by electrolysis of water.

    egrasem: Take it back to the dealer. That can bring it into sink. If you plan on getting rid of the GoodYear ST tires you can have your speedometer corrected then, but you will pay about$30. to get it done. Many of us feel the ST tires are flimsley OE tires that should never have been put on the Liberty in the 1st place. I traded my ST tires in at just 300 miles, and the jeep came in by dealer trade and it had 175 miles on it. I put on the GoodYear Wrangler Silent Armor 245 70 16 T. The ST tires are so flexible and they are a passenger tire. The Jeep is a truck that weighs about 4,300 lbs. They are no good at all in mud and even worse in gravel! Well good luck and enjoy the Liberty.

    unclebubba: I know about the export CRD wrangler, but it does not meet the US smog standards. I agree that to have a CRD might turn out to be a real winner. But what do we know about trucks and Jeeps and the sales marker? After all we are only consumers, and surely they are not trying to please us, are they?

    kellybob: I would ask them to replace all the filters! especially the water filter.

    It is great when you find a dealer who treats you as they want you as a customer. Write DCX a letter, and sent a copy to the dealer and service manager. Mention every name of every person who helped. This really helps build a customer relationship that is worth it's weight in gold.
    I would also write how the selling dealer messed things up. Great to hear the news.

    In the Jeep.com it says the Patriot will have as an option a 2.L diesel with a 6 speed manual trans. Now this makes it a more interesting Jeep!

    Farout
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    You ought not to get everbody excited like that. The sentence on jeep.com actually reads:
    A 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine, paired with a six-speed manual transaxle, will be available for Jeep Patriot in key diesel markets outside North America.
    No chance of a Patriot diesel in America for next year.
    HELP. Sometime ago, perhaps three months or so. Someone put a link to a tire site that you put in your tire measurements and it gave you the circumference of the tire. Can anyone remember that site? Thanks for the Help.
    My Liberty came with Wrangler HP 17 by 235. I have 20K on them and seem to have about 20K more to go. I have not seen Wranglers rated very high anywhere. I seems Yokohama Geolanders, Bridgestone Duelers and Michelin LTX/MS get high marks on this vehicle on the sites I checked. Anyone have experience with replacing the OEMs with any of these.
    Skyraiders were A-1 spads. My dad flew them for the AF in Laos. I spent 7 years in the AF and I recommend the Coast Guard since it's more likely they'll be serving the US instead of some other country. Lots of backstabbing in the AF. Doing the job well had no bearing on performance reviews. Some people owned Jeeps... Whew!... Back on thread. Mine's gone a few weeks with no new lights or problems. I washed it and now it's dirty... darn!
    So far I have to remove the spare tire every time I want to tow my boat. The ball sits just a couple of inches below the spare tire so there is no room to hook up with the tire on. I purchased an extension from a place called "Rocky Road Outfitters". The extension is very long and it really adds to the tongue weight causing the vehicle to sag. I also notice that if I tow using the extension I encounter a swaying motion that is not there when I remove the tire and use the normal length connection. Anyone one else deal with this? Suggestions or other options?. The dealer has been no help. They say just keep taking the spare tire off.
    Has anyone seen any mods or computer chips that promise to increase fuel milage and power. I know that it is easy to find this kind of thing for full size trucks. Has anyone used one of these or even seen any on the market. I would like to hear if anyone has actually used a chip and what the results were.
    Hi! Dieseltuning, a german company, has a nice unit for $539. They are a dotcom company. I just don't want to be the first guy on the block to have one! Let us know what you think.
    I guess we have to think twice before getting one of these chips. Our tranny, when shifting, sends out an information to the engine controller that reduces the amount of fuel in order not to overheat the transmission fluid when the converter is slipping.
    All chips that are connected after the ecm don't deal with this condition. I would keep this option for manual gearboxes only.
    I think the proper trick for the Jeep is to keep the egr valve in good working order. I also noticed that the CRD engine has very little flywheel inertia and when accelerating smoothly going downhill the gears shift and lock as fast as you can read 'clong-clong-clong'. This indicates that the shifting condition is speed and throttle (load) related. When the egr valve doesn't respond fast enough, this is not achievable.
    A word of caution:
    Most of these tire calculators don't take into account that the rolling circumference (diameter) is about 97% of the undeflected circumference (diameter). This means if you are using the calucaltor to compare tires, that works. But if you are using the tire calculater to figure out speed, there will be an error in the calculations.
    So you'll need to check to see if the individual calculator uses this 3% factor.
    Hope this helps.
    Farout,
    Talk about getting to the crux of the problem!! Yes, I agree that we, the consumer, know nothing about Jeeps, trucks or anything else! :mad:
  • u136646u136646 Member Posts: 17
    If the goal of determining tire diameter is to check the odometer and speedometer accuracy I used my handheld GPS to check this and my indicated vs actual was very close. I used a Magellan Meridian Platinum GPS.
    Good to see a fellow diesel head looking for more power. There is a chip called the Predator. Claims to add about 130lbs ft of tq. I am waiting for Banks (http://www.bankspower.com/) to come out with something for the CRD. I called them and asked if they forgot about us little diesel owners. They "have something in the works" and have even asked if I would like a phone call when something does come out. Banks is the leader in power add ons for Diesels. Bully Dog hasn't even considered the CRD. Guess there is not enough interest?
    B/4 buying my trailer I installed air bags in the coil spring in the rear. About 120 bucks with labor. Then I had a custom stinger made to the exact length that cleared the spare tire. It's a one piece unit that I remove after towing so I don't hit my leg on the ball. That solved the sway and sag. Also make sure the tongue weight it a min. of 10% of the tow weight.
  • gob2gob2 Member Posts: 3
    I solved my problem useing a bulldog type hitch on the trailer tongue. They don't have the 3 inch tall latch on top. This worked with a 2 inch drop ball in the reciever.
  • bvcrdbvcrd Member Posts: 196
    This is surprising! I found the EXACT opposite to be true.
  • colemeiersteincolemeierstein Member Posts: 1
    Have you tried getting an extension that drops the ball down instead of lengthening it? I know that Curt Manufacturing offers a draw bar like that. www.curtmfg.com
  • bvcrdbvcrd Member Posts: 196
    ..............or maybe just turn the draw bar he has over. It might be he has the ball mounted on the wrong side to make it to high. I tow with a 16' trailer and have no clearance probs.
  • manleymanley Member Posts: 72
    I am with you. I don't want to be the first guy to get one and it screw up my perfectly good truck. It would be cool to be the first one to get one if they do really bust fuel economy by 10% like they say. Just think, 295ft-lb at 33mpg.
    I know these chips are really popular with 3/4ton trucks. I have read on those fourms that they work really well. The problem being is that there are alot more full sized truck clacking and spuddering then there are little jeep liberties doing the same. at least in the US
    I wanted to know if anyone else has heard of this problem... I bought my '05 Liberty Diesel in March of '05 and I have approximately 48000 miles on it now. Recently, it has been making a very loud noise when I am slowing down. It usually starts at about 15 mph, until I stop. It sound like it's going to stall, and just 2 days ago, it has started stalling occasionally when I am in Drive at a stop. The Dealership is telling me that I have gas in the diesel engine, but I really don't think that this is the problem, as I filled up at least 24 hours before I noticed any noises. Also, sometimes when I am cruising, it feels like the car sputters from time to time.. any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Sounds like you might have air in the lines.
    Double check all of the clamps for the fuel system.
    Mine had to have the fuel filter assembly replaced.
  • craigs1969craigs1969 Member Posts: 20
    Yes, I think mine is off too. Next time I take it to the dealership for an oil change, I'm going to tell them to check it.
  • sally6sally6 Member Posts: 3
    Thanks for the suggestion, I just spoke with the service manager and he said that they already check the lines and the fuel system. He is insisting that it's either gas or bad fuel....
    Steve,
    With all due respect, I barely have time for this forum and usually have to take it in at 2-4 days at time.
    Having tried to engage this particular E85 crowd, I have decided that that particular forum is more interested in bashing anyone who is trying to move the country forward. Instead, they type about Utopias that don't exist and cartels that would never withstand scrutiny.
    While I understand that there is no silver bullet, the attempts that DCX with CRD and GM with their Flex-Fuel push are a baby step in the right direction.
    So, when they stop using Politician position speeches that are years out-dated (Diane Feinstein no less). I might tune back in. As I type, they are debating the hypoxic zone in the Gulf south of the Mississippi Delta and how beef cattle are the cause of XX barrels of oil consumed over their lifetime and their contribution (the cows) to greenhouse gases (in Indiana lexicon this debate could be entitled "how to keep a cow from farting"). I don't think that was the intent of car forums but I could be wrong. Some of the Hybrid vs. Diesel discussion is almost as silly
    Few answers, little help but lots of crap. My $.02 on the E85 forum.
    Thanks, but I will stick with a group that will at least help me properly maintain my vehicle and where to troubleshoot where things go wrong. If you want to be amused by your fellow citizen, tune in to the E85 forum. :cry:
    Does anyone elses suspension moan and groan. First thing in the morning as i am pulling out of my uneven and pot holed drive way my suspension moans and groans. The funny thing is that it doesn't do it on the way home going over the same drive way in the oposite direction. Maybe I am missing something but the suspension should not need to warm up. :confuse:
    Manley,
    Yep...I've got the same issue. Supposedly the STAR Center is aware of the source and will be issuing a TSB soon. Until then, if you can't repeat the problem in front of a tech, you can't get anything resolved. It doesn't matter that the STAR Center has a case opened for it, there is no TSB and therefore no sanctioned fix.
    From what my dealer tells me, they have a TSB NOW for it. They said they have been having lots of calls. I plan on taking mine in but will wait untill closer to 12,000 miles so I can get a free brake job then, rather than at 1100 miles.
    On my '06 CRD, I just open the back door, hitch up my trailer, and close the door. There is enough clearance once the trailer is on the ball. I am using a utility style trailer for this example, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for any other trailer. My hitch is the factory 5000lb and I have a 2" drop receiver.
    I will grant that this is a compromise I am not totally happy with, but I don't want to remove the spare every time I want to use my trailer.
    Regards
    use the search feature herein "search this discussion" for "brophy". Read about ball mounts and avoid capacity reducing ball mount extensions. Later I found makers other than brophy to buy a proper length ball mount. I can't remember who first posted the brophy name.
    Ummmm...without test-driving your CRD, inspecting your ATF fluid color/smell as well as other drive train factors, I'd say you are experiencing torque converter suicide. It sounds like the lockup clutch is not locking with integrity. More than likely, you'd find metal shavings in the trans pan if you were to pull it. The resonance, shuddering, stalling, etc are all typical indications of torque conv. locking mismanagement, but without testing and verification, this is just speculation.
    You could get an independent evaluator (some good ole tranny guy) to troubleshoot this for you. If the problem is, indeed, the torque converter, there is a TSB that notes improvement to torque converter durability (TSB Number: 18-008-06 for 2006 CRDs) and another to replace 5-speed CRD tranny cooler return filter (TSB Number: E16). A case could be made that your destroyed torque converter is a result of problems identified in one of these 2 TSB. Bottom line: finding and employing an independent, experienced tranny serviceman may be your best bet to solving this problem. At a minimum, he could help troubleshoot the issue with a quick drive around the block that hopefully replicates the symptoms.
    Here's a link to help you with the language and troubleshooting with tranny problems.
    I have a question about the CRD fuel filter/water seperator unit. Let me first say: you folks are really bumming me out! My new CRD is my 3rd Jeep and 2nd Libery. My first Liberty was the original 2002 3.7 gas with the high suspension. What a great vehicle! Never a problem.
    I'm over the 600 mile break in on the 2006 CRD and it is performing beyond expectation. My question is with the water-in-fuel warning light. I haven't received such a warning but the owner manual is scant on info. Does one simply drain the water via the valve beneath the filter? And then pump the primer to re-introduce fuel? What's the deal?
    Let me say again: no problems with the CRD despite what I have read here. Sorry to those not satisfied. Perhpas dealer abuse was a factor. I am getting 24.1 mpg overall and 28-30 highway. I agree, the torque converter lockout is the most inconvenient feature of this Jeep but I believe it is working as designed. The Liberty is a great vehicle. My biggest problem with Chrysler is that they want to discontinue it.
    Thank you and happy (off road) trails,
    -fishing buddy
    Fishingbuddy, you might want to search the forum for fuel filter. The short answer to you filter drain question is "yes". There are a lot of posts about how to drain the filter with competing methods.
    4th filter drain revealed no water in fuel. I think draining the filter periodically (each oil change) is a waste of time given the fuel I’m getting and I am going to just change it at 25 k miles and rely on the water sensor after that. I will cut the old one open to see if any visible impurities were collected.
    Somewhere between 17 and 17.5 k miles my CRD finally stopped using oil. The exhaust fumes seem to have cleaned up considerably. I continue to drive very easy without incurring any EGR problems, yet (no “nose blowing”).
    Recently drove 950 miles over 4 days. The first 360 miles were into a SEVERE head wind producing only 24.5 mph (lowest highway mpg so far). The last 370 miles were in dead calm producing 29.4 mpg, most miles at 65 mph.
    Enjoy your good CRD.
