Hummer H3

I think the big thing GM is worried about is what the rising gas prices are going to do to the sales of the H3. Granted, 20mpg is nicer than what we're used to from American SUVs, but it is still on the edge of what people will tolerate as far as acceptable. GM has high hopes that the H3 will redeem what sales they've lost to foreign manufactures. But look at the competition from Toyota and Nissan and it becomes clear the H3 really doesn't have much to offer on a practical level.

The only way this SUV will be a hit is if it offers something special besides looks and 20mpg. Sure, its selling well right now because it is something new that screams cool. But what happens when the novelty wears off?
I might also point out that the durability of the i5 has yet to be determined. When powering a vehicle that appears to be too much for it, sacrifices will be made.

Right now, I think the most attractive feature of H3 (besides its looks) is its affordability. (Some would argue that the off-road ability is perhaps the most attractive feature, but let's be honest, how many of these trucks are realistically going to ever go "off road")

Making a hybrid, adding a turbo, or switching to bigger engine will all substantially increase the cost of ownership either by raising the cost of the vehicle or the cost to fuel it.

If GM wants a hit, they need to make this thing with a powerplant near 300hp that gets close to 30mpg AND keep it affordable (sub-35k)
Not possible?? As I mentioned before, go visit a Toyota or Nissan dealership and see what the Japanese are creating.

    The technology is there.

It would be nice to have another 50HP in the H3, but I think those days are over...for good. I don't think we'll see turbo I5 either; wasn't designed for it and they're not going to retool the I5 line to make it so. Further, GM engineering isn't turbo-oriented. They got burned badly trying to bolt turbos on their engines in the 70s. A European-made turbodiesel is more likely, and since Detroit Diesel is now essentially a marketing arm for MTU (Daimler) Diesel, that could be make sweet package.

H3 performance is similar to other non-V8 SUVs with serious offroad capability. If GM had designed the H3 for a larger engine, it would be so close to an H2 that it would be pointless. I don't think it should be compared to pick-ups and urban SUVs; or $50K SUVs with huge 8s that get 10mpg on premium. Making a capable offroad rig thats also a strong cruiser or trailering rig equates to 10-12mpg. For once, GM got the timing right and the relatively economical I5 may be the only thing to save Hummers bacon. H2 sale have screeched to a halt, and this time next year when we're paying $4+/gal, you'll be lucky if you can give one away.

It is my understanding that the I6 won't fit. It's to long. So unless they do something with the I5 or go to a V6 and I don't know if that is possilble you are out of luck. I agree with the other poster with the way gas is these past couple months I think more HP is out of the picture for the near future.

Could you provide a list of dealers in or near NC that honor GMID's? Also, any dealers within reasonable distance. How do I contact GMC direct to have them call dealership on my behalf? Thanks for your help.

What is name of Cary dealership? I live in Charlotte and would go to Cary for the GMID benefit. Did you have a good or bad experience? Could you refer me to someone at the dealership? Could use your opinions.
    Thanks

The dealership is Hendrick Cadillac - Hummer which is part of the Hedrick Cary Auto Mall. So far the experience has been good, although we have not closed yet. The H3 is on order. The sales person has been very easy to deal with. I'm not sure they would have accepted the GMID certificate for one on the lot - but that was ok with me because I wanted a manual transmission which they didn't have.

I don't think we're supposed to give names on here, but if you'll let me know you e.mail address, I'd be glad to tell you the name of the sales consultant I'm working with.

According to one dealer in Massachusetts, Hummer is having a problem with the Nav systems overheating in the relatively small dashboard. The same problem existed on the H2 originally but they overcame it some how. They said to expect Nav later next year (most likely). In the meantime another dealer told me they are installing 3rd party after market Navs (in-dash) without incident.

Does anyone know of a dealer in or around CT that honors GMID.

I am interested in purchasing an H3 with the Lux and Off road package w/ marker lights, head curtain airbags, trailering pack and equipment, block heater and auto transmission. I have been quoted a price of $36,903 including sales tax and registration. This price is not including the GMID which they do not offer. I would appreciate anyone's opinion on this price quote. The invoice for this vehicle with these options is around $33, 500 without the tax and reg.

I just completed my purchase of an H3. Retail was 38600. GMID was 35100. Good deal overall and was treated decently by the dealer in Southern Calif. The dealer said they would accept GMID on a factory order.

I emailed Hummer a couple of months ago - asking for more power in the H3 in a form of a small high-torque Diesel. They answered but didn't say much. They hinted at a "6 cylinder" performance option, but did not positively acknowledge Diesel.

Could people who would like a small efficient Diesel in H3 please write to Hummer and ask for Diesel? Maybe they will change their minds?

My only other option is a Jeep Liberty diesel...

Go to the hummer site and price it out and compare with your quote. My advice would be to take your time and search as many dealers as possible. Find one that accepts the GMID and go with them otherwise your just throwing away $3000.

Be real careful though with your financing because a lot of dealers will say they accept the GMID then add back in a chunck of cash in the lease/financing to make up for it. Spend time getting to understand how a lease is calculated.

I picked up mine today. I live in Cleveland, bought from a dealer in Columbus who got the car from a dealer in Michigan. With the internet, your not tied to any one geography.

    Good luck, They're cool.
  • gdiehlgdiehl Member Posts: 15
Just picked up my H3 today. Look, it's not going to win at Indy next year and it probably is a little underpowered, but what your giving up in power your getting back in mileage. I can't see a noticable difference in power between my H3 and my V6 Explorer I had before.

If you want POWER this ain't the car. If you want kids like my neighbor to say, "Wow, I can't believe you got a Hummer! Cool!" then it is the car.

By the way, anyone near Ohio, I would recommend Hummer of Columbus. Real easy to deal with and accepts the GMID.

Alas, a diesel H3 will make no difference in CA. The boneheads in Sacramento only allow diesels to be sold in monster pickups with massive GVW ratings. No economical Diesel Jeeps or VWs can be sold new here, but anyone can buy a big Dodge with Cummins. Dumb, really really dumb.

Hiya all! I'm new to the boards. First, I would like to thank all who have posted here, you have provided so much info on the H3.
Last Thursday, I made the big leap, I ordered a H3. Wow, to me, this is such a big deal. I never thought I would have one. I'm a janitor for a school system in Ohio. Hehehe, imagine a janitor driving a Hummer to work! I did get the GMID info from here and it saved me over $3000. I wouldn't have been able to do it without that. I ordered mine from Cleveland Hummer, about 34 miles from me. I was also talking with Columbus too, they seemed to be so willing and helpful, but the distance of driving there kept me in Cleveland. I'll be trading in my Avalanche which I just love. I hate to get rid of her, but the H3 has been calling my name for so long now. I will be sacrificing the hauling capacity but I think I can get by.
    Here's what I ordered:
    Superior Blue with Adventure package
    automatic transmission
    monsoon stereo with XM
    black tubular side steps
I plan to install a mac mini in it next summer with some sort of small flat screen somwhere. Not exactly sure how and where yet, but I'll keep you all updated.
Anyone else that has ordered and received their H3's, how long did it take? They told me 6 weeks.
Thanks again for the vast amount of info on this forum :)

Hello everyone. I'm new to these H3 boards, but am very excited about getting an H3 soon. I'm just waiting on a GMID and have sent e-mails to the addresses mentioned earlier in the forum.

I will be placing my order at Lynch in St. Louis and from what I know, they do accept the GMID.

Thanks in advance and I hope to be driving soon.

    Hello everybody:
My question is what sort of mileage are you seeing? I have owned my H3 for a little over two months or 2,000 miles. I have checked my milage several times now and I am personally very disappointed. I have been only getting about 12 miles per gallon city and 15-16 on the freeway. I know I probably drive a little faster than many, usually 75-80 on the freeway but I live in California. If you drive any slower you will get run over. I hope as the engine breaks in it will get better. Actually much better. I have even switched my oil to mobile one. I personally am a believer that the synthetics give a little better milage. I did see one posting where the person quoted 20.5 miles and I almost fell out of my chair. I really want to know if my car is an anomily. Thanks

You can get around the limitation by purchasing one with 7500 or more miles on the odometer. You just can't buy them new. However, since H3 doesn't offer a diesel, I agree it doesn't make any difference.

Look forward to getting an H3. Sounds like Independence Hummer in Charlotte would be a good dealer for me to check if I can get a GMID. Thanks :) !

I was hoping you could assist. I am in the process of ordering my H3 here at Daugherty Chevrolet in Sacramento Ca and they seem not to want to budge on the price. I am trying to get info on GMID and how I can take advantage of the price break. I would be willing to travel to So Cal to do so. Can you provide some info on GMID as well as the name of the dealership you went to? Thanks in advance!

Hello Hummer fans. What is a GMID? I am getting ready to purchase my H3 and I am looking for any type of savings as none are offered for the H3. I do get a suppliers discount from my employer on GM vehicles but I don't think it will be valid for the H3. Any suggestions. I think I'm going with a Black, Luxury trim w/ chrome options and a kickin Monsoon system & XM. Does anyone have suggestions for an aftermarket GPS navigation sys for the H3? Thanks any input is appreciated. These gas prices have me alittle worried................somebody say something to subside this hesitation so I can have my dream car.

20.5 was going interstate at 55 mph. We picked up the Hummer and hit the road, so break in period of 55 mph for first 500 miles.
Now we are at 16 combined driving. :surprise:

    Hi Yat74,

Try a Search This Discussion for GMID. (GM in the Driveway certificate). There's a bunch of posts talking about the ins and outs, how to get one, what dealers are accepting them.

Here's an early post about GMID:

    re Independence Hummer in Charlotte.

I know they are honoring on a factory order but are they also taking it for one on the lot? I drove by there the other nite and they had 15-20 sitting on the lot. Im sure the quick jump in gas prices has slowed sales to a crawl and I was hoping to use the cert for one off the lot.....

    Thanks humbleag!

I have one of your pics as my desktop picture on my computer in my glass shop. Awesome! I can't wait. They actually had one just like what I ordered at Cleveland Hummer and I would have taken it but they said I had to order to get the GMID discount.
    Your Hummer is truely awesome!

I just got mine last week and checked the mileage for the first time. I got 17.5 for the first 200 miles. Mostly highway and some city but the highway included a trip to west virginia with a lot of hills.

Can anyone explain how GMID pricing is structured relative to actual dealer cost? Its a bit higher than the invoice price. But I have no idea how much of the GMID discount is absorbed by the dealer vs. GM.

Our dealer accepts GMID, but its proving very difficult to find an H3 equipped they way we want. To buy off-the-lot, we'd have to take one with $1500 or more in unwanted options. All the units equipped with what we want (Adventure pkg, auto, sun roof, roof air bags) also have the Monsoon stereo, XM, and trailer pkg that we don't want. I'd like to know if there's any negotiating room left with GMID pricing that might make it possible to make a deal on an "over-equipped" unit and avoid waiting 8-10 weeks for a factory order. We don't mind the dealer making fair profit, but we're stretching what was a planned Jeep budget to get an H3, so we have to watch the unwanted add-ons.
  • nortsr1nortsr1 Member Posts: 1,060
make the dealer an offer at whatever price you think would be reasonable for the "over equipped"??? If not...why don't you place an order for one Exactly" the color and the way you want it?????

They located exactly what I wanted in Cary, NC. They would have honored one on the lot but I wanted 5 speed adventure black. They seem to be moving the cars. I have been to dealership often lately. Drove one at dealer with cold air intake, throttle body spacer, and custom exhaust. They sold it the next day.

One last check on real driving mileage how does it look out there...? What is your average MPG....? It has me a little worried with the price of gas :)
  • ayrowayrow Member Posts: 99
LOL. I have to laugh. Like I said would happen in an earlier post....all-of-a-sudden 20mpg doesn't seem so great now that gas prices have gone up so much.

The current issue of Consumer Reports is a must-read. There is a huge article in there about how auto manufactures have been posting unrealistic EPA mpg numbers on their stickers on the windows. Some of these postings have been off by as much as 50% and Consumer Reports is calling for a re-vamp of the EPA testing that auto makers use to determine these numbers.

Probably won't happen because there is too much money in it when they are off so much. Politicians, auto makers, and oil companies all benefit when they overstate the numbers.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if the H3 truly gets 20mpg. And like I said before, when gas reaches $4.00/gallon (and it will), 20mpg will seem like nothing.

Corn is the answer. By itself it could fuel our economy as well as our cars. But Bush and the government are making too much money off of fossil fuels. Unfortunately, it will take a crisis before we make a switch of any kind. And you can bet it won't happen until politicians and government find a way to corrupt it and make unheard of amounts of money off of it.

I hate to be so negative and bitter, but these are the facts. Unfortunately, our kids will be the ones who truly have to live with this mess.

I've been reading on this board for months and finally joined today.

I'm interested in the GMID Pricing on the Hummer H3. I'm getting married in December and this seems like a great family vehicle. I've only owned GM cars and plan on keeping it that way.

How does the GMID work. I've been reading through old post and still am a little confused. Do you have to spend a certain amount to use these certificates?

Would anyone be willing to help me in obtaining one of these certificates.

    Thanks in advance,
    John
