The only way this SUV will be a hit is if it offers something special besides looks and 20mpg. Sure, its selling well right now because it is something new that screams cool. But what happens when the novelty wears off?
I might also point out that the durability of the i5 has yet to be determined. When powering a vehicle that appears to be too much for it, sacrifices will be made.
Right now, I think the most attractive feature of H3 (besides its looks) is its affordability. (Some would argue that the off-road ability is perhaps the most attractive feature, but let's be honest, how many of these trucks are realistically going to ever go "off road")
Making a hybrid, adding a turbo, or switching to bigger engine will all substantially increase the cost of ownership either by raising the cost of the vehicle or the cost to fuel it.
If GM wants a hit, they need to make this thing with a powerplant near 300hp that gets close to 30mpg AND keep it affordable (sub-35k)
Not possible?? As I mentioned before, go visit a Toyota or Nissan dealership and see what the Japanese are creating.
The technology is there.
H3 performance is similar to other non-V8 SUVs with serious offroad capability. If GM had designed the H3 for a larger engine, it would be so close to an H2 that it would be pointless. I don't think it should be compared to pick-ups and urban SUVs; or $50K SUVs with huge 8s that get 10mpg on premium. Making a capable offroad rig thats also a strong cruiser or trailering rig equates to 10-12mpg. For once, GM got the timing right and the relatively economical I5 may be the only thing to save Hummers bacon. H2 sale have screeched to a halt, and this time next year when we're paying $4+/gal, you'll be lucky if you can give one away.

I don't think we're supposed to give names on here, but if you'll let me know you e.mail address, I'd be glad to tell you the name of the sales consultant I'm working with.
Could people who would like a small efficient Diesel in H3 please write to Hummer and ask for Diesel? Maybe they will change their minds?
My only other option is a Jeep Liberty diesel...

Be real careful though with your financing because a lot of dealers will say they accept the GMID then add back in a chunck of cash in the lease/financing to make up for it. Spend time getting to understand how a lease is calculated.
I picked up mine today. I live in Cleveland, bought from a dealer in Columbus who got the car from a dealer in Michigan. With the internet, your not tied to any one geography.
Good luck, They're cool.
If you want POWER this ain't the car. If you want kids like my neighbor to say, "Wow, I can't believe you got a Hummer! Cool!" then it is the car.
By the way, anyone near Ohio, I would recommend Hummer of Columbus. Real easy to deal with and accepts the GMID.
Last Thursday, I made the big leap, I ordered a H3. Wow, to me, this is such a big deal. I never thought I would have one. I'm a janitor for a school system in Ohio. Hehehe, imagine a janitor driving a Hummer to work! I did get the GMID info from here and it saved me over $3000. I wouldn't have been able to do it without that. I ordered mine from Cleveland Hummer, about 34 miles from me. I was also talking with Columbus too, they seemed to be so willing and helpful, but the distance of driving there kept me in Cleveland. I'll be trading in my Avalanche which I just love. I hate to get rid of her, but the H3 has been calling my name for so long now. I will be sacrificing the hauling capacity but I think I can get by.
Here's what I ordered:
Superior Blue with Adventure package
automatic transmission
monsoon stereo with XM
black tubular side steps
I plan to install a mac mini in it next summer with some sort of small flat screen somwhere. Not exactly sure how and where yet, but I'll keep you all updated.
Anyone else that has ordered and received their H3's, how long did it take? They told me 6 weeks.
Thanks again for the vast amount of info on this forum
Brian
I will be placing my order at Lynch in St. Louis and from what I know, they do accept the GMID.
Thanks in advance and I hope to be driving soon.
My question is what sort of mileage are you seeing? I have owned my H3 for a little over two months or 2,000 miles. I have checked my milage several times now and I am personally very disappointed. I have been only getting about 12 miles per gallon city and 15-16 on the freeway. I know I probably drive a little faster than many, usually 75-80 on the freeway but I live in California. If you drive any slower you will get run over. I hope as the engine breaks in it will get better. Actually much better. I have even switched my oil to mobile one. I personally am a believer that the synthetics give a little better milage. I did see one posting where the person quoted 20.5 miles and I almost fell out of my chair. I really want to know if my car is an anomily. Thanks
You can get around the limitation by purchasing one with 7500 or more miles on the odometer. You just can't buy them new. However, since H3 doesn't offer a diesel, I agree it doesn't make any difference.

Now we are at 16 combined driving. :surprise:
Try a Search This Discussion for GMID. (GM in the Driveway certificate). There's a bunch of posts talking about the ins and outs, how to get one, what dealers are accepting them.
Here's an early post about GMID:

I know they are honoring on a factory order but are they also taking it for one on the lot? I drove by there the other nite and they had 15-20 sitting on the lot. Im sure the quick jump in gas prices has slowed sales to a crawl and I was hoping to use the cert for one off the lot.....
Can you provide me the city and name of the dealer you went to in Southern Cal? I am in the process of marketing a dealer here in Sacramento that will honor the GMID but so far I have had no such luck. Thanks in advance!
Marcello Q.
I have one of your pics as my desktop picture on my computer in my glass shop. Awesome! I can't wait. They actually had one just like what I ordered at Cleveland Hummer and I would have taken it but they said I had to order to get the GMID discount.
Your Hummer is truely awesome!
Brian
For your certificate just E-Mail, full name, birthdate, and last 4 digits of your ssn to

Our dealer accepts GMID, but its proving very difficult to find an H3 equipped they way we want. To buy off-the-lot, we'd have to take one with $1500 or more in unwanted options. All the units equipped with what we want (Adventure pkg, auto, sun roof, roof air bags) also have the Monsoon stereo, XM, and trailer pkg that we don't want. I'd like to know if there's any negotiating room left with GMID pricing that might make it possible to make a deal on an "over-equipped" unit and avoid waiting 8-10 weeks for a factory order. We don't mind the dealer making fair profit, but we're stretching what was a planned Jeep budget to get an H3, so we have to watch the unwanted add-ons.

email me at fultonpub@bellsouth.net i have questions about independence hummer and who you dealt with.
Could you email me regarding Independence Hummer. I would like to know who you worked with, as I will be ordering from them also.

Thanks much!!
The current issue of Consumer Reports is a must-read. There is a huge article in there about how auto manufactures have been posting unrealistic EPA mpg numbers on their stickers on the windows. Some of these postings have been off by as much as 50% and Consumer Reports is calling for a re-vamp of the EPA testing that auto makers use to determine these numbers.
Probably won't happen because there is too much money in it when they are off so much. Politicians, auto makers, and oil companies all benefit when they overstate the numbers.
Honestly, I'd be surprised if the H3 truly gets 20mpg. And like I said before, when gas reaches $4.00/gallon (and it will), 20mpg will seem like nothing.
Corn is the answer. By itself it could fuel our economy as well as our cars. But Bush and the government are making too much money off of fossil fuels. Unfortunately, it will take a crisis before we make a switch of any kind. And you can bet it won't happen until politicians and government find a way to corrupt it and make unheard of amounts of money off of it.
I hate to be so negative and bitter, but these are the facts. Unfortunately, our kids will be the ones who truly have to live with this mess.
I'm interested in the GMID Pricing on the Hummer H3. I'm getting married in December and this seems like a great family vehicle. I've only owned GM cars and plan on keeping it that way.
How does the GMID work. I've been reading through old post and still am a little confused. Do you have to spend a certain amount to use these certificates?
Would anyone be willing to help me in obtaining one of these certificates.
Thanks in advance,
John
