HHR is the PT competitor. HHR is based off the Delta platform (same as Cobalt), with only Ecotecs availables. Equinox is on the Theta platform (same as VUE), with only the Chinese 3.4L V6 available. They serve different purposes.

"All 3 of those CHRYCO products are better than pretty much any north american GM product"

And all 3 of those "gee whiz" Mo-dogs are collecting dust! Pacifica, who really cares?
PT, a fad car for Baby Boomers. Crossfire? GM has the Corvette, no need to match the Audi TT since it's just a glorified VW Beetle, another fad car.

And no way did it only take a year to bring the Pacifica to production!

About the redesigned Civic and Focus. Those could be the Cobalt's real sales killer, as they may be released later and nitpick at the Cobalt's problems. (whatever they may be)Let's say the Cobalt does get the 2.4 170 Horsepower engine. Ford could show up with a 2.5 171 horsepower engine and then Honda might show up with a 2.4 liter 200 horsepower engine.

Will be interesting to see how it matches up with the Mazda 3 in the interior and handling department.
  • theo2709theo2709 Member Posts: 476
New Focus not coming for a long time: MY 2007. The Cobalt will have already been out for 2 years.
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
shouldn't it have some acceleration? I can't imagine a 4700 pound 'sports' pickup having 40,000 dollar handling either.

Focus gets a reskin for 05. The new 2.3 is already in place and has gotten excellent reviews plus its SULEV and PZEV. or whatever. In 05 its joined by a 2.0 version. Also the SVT continues on. Top rank handling, good value, can even get recaro seats.....SVT could stand a hp boost though. You can always buy a Jackson racing supercharger which Ford will install and warrant for that if you like. I hope the 05 gets a new interior as well.

Europe has a new Focus. US gets a reskin of the current version but the new Euro Focus is based a bit on the current platform anyways. The MAzda3 and Volvo V40 are based off the Euro Focus platform.

CR recommends the Focus these days.

Neon aside from the SRT is a dead duck.

Elantra getting tweaked. New Spectra coming up will have VVT and nav available. Bound to be a big competitor.

New Sentra gotta be coming soon. New civic too I'd think.

And the new Golf / Jetta.....

    competition never rests.

cobalt should be ok as long as its

-a huge improvement over the Ion
-not in production 10 years ala current Cadaver
-makes any kind of an attempt to have a lively powertrain and decent chassis dynamics
-not overpriced like many first year models. resist the urge to over incentiveise...price it right from the start.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
2.2L Ecotec is standard, 2.4L is for the GT only.

Next Civic is at least 2 years off.
  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
in Europe, VW incredibly does not plan to bring it to the US for another 18 months or more.
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
'maybe VW needs extra time to make it reliable'.....LOL
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm in agreement about the incentives. Price it right from the start. Don't have $3000 built-in to the price, because that will kill resale and devastate resale for those first few owners, spreading bad will.

Looking forward to seeing the interior on this.. Hopefully measures up to cars like this
    Interior Pic

  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
yes, that Mazda3 is nicer than many cars that cost 10 grand more.
  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
at the LA Auto Show next month, per The Car Connection.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I saw that! Can't wait to see it.

Also looking forward to the Saturn Relay and the Saab 9-2. A lot of cool stuff coming real soon (I hope). GM needs to get some new product rolling now that it seem to have quality up.
  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
I think that means they will next go to Toronto rather than Chicago. You might have to download some digital shots again this year :).

(And you know, I think maybe Magneto finally went away to school in London - at least I have not seen postings from him lately. we need to find out whether someone has a site for you to park the pictures.)
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
is finally rolling, and this time without any SUVs to launch either. Can't wait until Detroit 2004! (I may be going)
  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
Perhaps Magneto did not go to London afterall. Rather, he felt his work is finished here and rode off into the Texas sunset.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'll be at the Detroit Show, too. If they show this car in LA, they'll probably also show it in Detroit.

  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
It will probably go from LA to Detroit to Toronto then New York.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I'll go to the Toronto show for sure. The Pursuit will only be in Toronto though!!

    ;-)
  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
How could GM do that to us stateside?!?!

    Oops. Sorry about that.
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
Doesn't matter, the Cobalt is fine. Canadian Pontiac dealers have more political pull, so they have gotten every Chevy ever made. For example, they had Chevette and Vega versions before we did.
  • theo2709theo2709 Member Posts: 476
Small cars sell (much) better in Canada. The dealers wanted a piece of the action, eh?
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
CDN Pontiac even sold Geo Metros as Fireflies.

I forgot that small cars rule up there, Acura even sells a rebadged Civic as an EL.

Did CDN have rebadged Corscias as Ponitac Tempests? I know the Middle East counties got those.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    EL, right?

I saw a Firefly once. Sure 'nuff, just a rebadged Metro.

  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
It will have the widetrack feature!
    ;-)
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Pontiac Tempest and Firefly were all real cars. Smaller cars are big here, especially in Quebec. Out west it's all pickups tough.

Hopefully the Pursuit will at least have a different interior or something.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
he he he he he he....... So you're saying the Geo brand never existed up there? Smart for GM. Geo was not necessary. The cars could have been Chevrolets and they still would have sold.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Was here. Metro all the way!
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Ya GEO was here, not as long as in the U.S. though. Pontiac dealers used to have the ASUNA brand here also which were rebadged Metros and Trackers. Thankfully they are all gone.

The Acura rebadged Honda Civic is also quite a joke. I always find it funny when a person mentions they have an Acura and that's the car they show me. Come on, get serious!
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
"I always find it funny when a person mentions they have an Acura and that's the car they show me. Come on, get serious!"

That's a pseudo car fan, only into surface stuff like name badges and fluff.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I guess for a certain crowd, that probably works ok. If you get them into a C$22K Acura Civic out of college then maybe they will stick with Acura down the road. I just think it cheapens the Acura name up here.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
is having some problems moving upscale, as the Acura news and views board points out.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
RSX is not a luxury car, either. It's a very nice 3 door hatchback, but IMO it does not belong in a luxury make's lineup. It should just be a Honda.

  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
Acura is famous for the "slammed" Integras buzzing around LA weaving in and out. hardly a "luxury" image.

It's mainly "Oldsmobile" to Honda's "Chevrolet".

Back to Cobalt, anyone seen any prototypes yet?
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
ateixeira : I agree. RSX is nothing more than a euro Accord. Acura is indeed more of a Buick than a BMW. The Acura Civic up here really takes the cake though. From a distance you can hardly see any difference.

tomcat : All I have seen is the drawing GM released a few months ago. One can take that and look at the new Opel Astra and take a guess though. Probably have a LOT more info in about 4-5 weeks.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
TSX is the euro accord sedan. I'm not sure what the RSX is called in other markets - Integra?

    -juice
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Ya, I always get those letters mixed up. TSX, RSX, whatever.

    ***READ

Since there is no seperate forum for the Pontiac roadster, here goes. The Solstice name is OUT. They had trouble copyrighting and trademarking it. It will probably revert to an alpha-numeric name. (Possible name: GR4)
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
    Ugh. Don't like it. Just when I'm getting used to 325i, C320, TL, ES330, ML350, G6, I get stuck with GR4. I prefer Solstice. Or something that's a name, not a number/letter thing.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Dunno why the RSX is a Acura while the S2000 is a Honda.
But then again I dunno why there is a Saablazer truck coming out and Saab WRX. Is Volvo building a Volvo Explorer?
Hopefully the Pursuit will have more than just a different steering wheel, alloys, colours and logo's on it vs the Cobalt.
Off to the DTS topic or maybe CTS, STS.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
Why is it a Honda in the first place???????
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Grrr, sounds like a growling dog. There have to be better letters than that.

    Pontiac could resurect 'J2000'!
    hee hee
  • regfootballregfootball Member Posts: 2,166
    OH JOY! or the T1000!
  • killfortkillfort Member Posts: 6
I'm sick of this alphanumeric crap.. it's getting out out hand. Pretty soon GM's going to start naming their cars 2*pi / sqrt(2) - natural log of e^imaginary number i - cosine of GR4.3.141 cuberoot CTSXLRDTSSTSSRXG6.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
can't even memorize the name when consumers car shop, can we?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    cosine...I like that name.

sine could be the sedan, cosine the wagon. LOL
