Actually by opening windows you use more gas then if you used the A/C because of the added wind resistance/turbulance.

What's the difference between the touring and sport models with manual transmission? All I can tell is the first has a moonroof and 6 CD changer. What else does it have that the sport model doesn't?

Hey all: Another qstn here re: Gerber rebate. I received my notice via email form Mazda. Here are the instructions:

    1. Print out this certificate.
    2. Present both the original offer and the $500 Cash Back Bonus certificate to the dealer at time of purchase.
    3. Receive your $500 Cash Back Bonus, PLUS any additional public offers available on any new 2005 or 2006 Mazda vehicle.
    4. Hurry... this offer is only valid on a 2005 or 2006 Mazda vehicle purchase between 07/20/2005 and 09/19/2005.

This refers to the "original offer". I am uncertain as to what this is....can anyone enlighten me? Thanks again. And, does rebate come off of price or is it a check mailed to you/me?

    Thx

Well we currently have a 04 Ody that we love. But it's too durn big now. Thank God for the 2 year lease. I thought the 5 was gonna be a dream. But guess not. Right now we are leaning toward the Element.

Funny thing is I had the same problem with the center stack in the cloth equipped 3's. For some reason I fit the ones with leather much better.

i bought my mazda5 yesterday, 7/22. i just found out about the gerber rebate. does anyone know if mazda might giving me the rebate eventhough i purchased the vehicle already.
  • lucas4lucas4 Member Posts: 2
I just put down a deposit of $1000 to order a Mazda 5. The dealer said it would take from 8 to 12 weeks The price was about $600 above invoice. I asked about including the roof rails in the build, I don't see why not since the European version has them

So ends the long saga about buying a new car. The Mazda 5 is not the perfect vehicle but
it has what I need... reliable transportation that can sit six. With the twins getting larger, the RAV4 was getting smaller The present vans are too large for everyday use, parking in an urban area would be too much of a hassle. We can always rent a larger van if we take a long trip.

I test drove it a week ago and you could tell it was a 4 cylinder with the higher RPM and a
slight hitch in the acceleration but I was at 80 before I knew it. The engine did not make
any excessive noise in getting there. The visibility was good all around and the parallel parking attempt showed in handled well

I ordered one in Strato Blue (short supply) auto without nav.
  • robyneilrobyneil Member Posts: 26
We bought a pearl white Touring/auto/no nav for my wife last July 12. I've been trying to hunt down the roof rack/rails since we bought the 5. It'd be great to be able to put some luggage on a roof basket carrier or box if we have to. Don't get me wrong, for a family of 3, we're happy with the 5, but having this flexibility is a must for us. We live in San Jose and all of our families are in SoCal. Problem is we usually go home with more packed items/overdue christmas gifts/food from our friends/families from what we started with for the trip to SoCal.

From what I can tell from the Mazda UK and Japan sites, UK has the roof racks standard and Japan has special Thule cross bars as an accessory. The Thule cross bars are lifestyle accessories as well for the UK for the other Mazda vehicles but not yet for the Mazda 5. It's driving me nuts for Mazda in North America not rolling out the roof rack accessories at the time of launch.

Please help. I posted what I found so far at the "Mazda5 Owners: Accessories & Modifications" forum message #4. Sorry, I know this is not the accessories forum. If anyone knows where we can get factory Mazda roof racks or aftermarket roof racks for the Mazda5/Premacy, please let us know. Thank you.
  • kaiankaian Member Posts: 36
I believe the roof racks will be here eventually. During one of my trips to the dealer I saw a little magazine on a desk that had an article on the Mazda5. This seemed to be a dealer magazine of some sort, as the article talked about the features and even listed a few cars that Mazda thought buyers would be cross-shopping. Anyway, in that article it made mention of accessories and mentioned the roof rack specifically, noting that the Mazda5 would be getting them in the future. I didn't inquire further on that, because I don't need the roof rack right now, but might want it eventually. Besides, I seemed to know more about the vehicle than the dealers did. :)

check out Warren Brown's (of the Washington Post) review

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/22/AR2005072201412.html

BTW, recently reviewed the Mercedes R-class vehicle last week, so that review makes for an interesting comparison.
  • vrmvrm Member Posts: 310
I read the review which was positive for the Mazda5. However, it could have been more informative and revealing.

Warren should get off his soap-box and spend more time writing about the vehicle itself. The majority of the readers are not interested in the marketing positioning and philosopy of the auto manufacturers.

    Hi,
I am new to this forum. I browsed all the posts in the last 2 months. However I have the following questions:

    1) It appears that the 2006 Mazda5 is a brand new vehicle i.e. there is no 2005 model? Is the Mazda5 made in Japan?

    2) The Mazda5 competes with the MPV mini-van. Does that mean the MPV will be discontinued?

    Thanks!
  • newowner1newowner1 Member Posts: 19
the 5 is brand new, so no 2005 model.

If my recollection serves, the mazda5 is made in Japan and was designed to replace the premacy, which is only sold in Europe. The MPV is a bit bigger than the mazda5, but I do recall something about phasing out the MPV in the future. I think I read somewhere that the MPV is not doing to well against the larger minis, while the Mazda5, a "vanlet," "MAV, or whatever they call it, is an emerging segment.'

You will notice that the 2005 MPV has a substantial rebate currently.
  • kaiankaian Member Posts: 36
    "there is no 2005 model?"

    Correct.

"Is the Mazda5 made in Japan?"

    Yes.

"The Mazda5 competes with the MPV mini-van."

In my opinion, it actually competes with the Toyota Matrix, Scion xB, Honda Element, etc. rather than minivans. My insurance and my registration has it as a "midsize wagon".

The Mazda5 is built at the Ujina 2 plant in Hiroshima, Japan.

Those were the vehicles I was looking at when I decided to purchase the Mazda 5. Very perceptive of you! And, that's what I told Mazda when they called to ask me about my purchase.

    Folks:

Thanks for the quick response! The responses show how informed everyone is on this forum.

I browsed through the "Problems & Solutions" section and new owners are complaning about the cooling power of the A/C.

I know time will tell, but should I be concerned about the "reliability" of the Mazda5? Or is this vehicle built on an established platform where the bugs have been ironed out?

    Thanks again.
  • smariasmaria Member Posts: 279
The Mazda5 is built on the Mazda3 platform, and uses the same 2.3L engine that the Mazda3 does. I'd expect the reliability to be comparable to that of the Mazda3, which is generally pretty good. Initial reports from Mazda5 owners in the "Problems & Solutions" discussion sound the same as the reports for the Mazda3, so that at least begins to confirm the similarity.

Also, even though the Mazda5 is brand new to North America, from what I've read it's really the 2nd generation of the Premacy that's been selling overseas. So, Mazda's had some time to iron out the bugs in its design.

Just took a look at your page, pagetuner, and frankly the info about the glove box is incorrect. If you do not have the NAV option the glove box is absolutely massive. Room for the owners manual, a wide selection of maps, a bunch of CD's ... it's huge.

I got my gerber certificate via email when I was at the dealer - of course I was so bummed to get home and find that the certificate says that it must be used at the dealership at the time of purchase.

I took it back to the dealership and they said to try calling mazda directly at the number on the certificate.

I called - they said that they would honor it - I have to mail them my sales paper and the certificate and they will issue me a check.

FYI - to those of you who found out about the rebate after the fact.

I second this - there is a small pocket on the door of the glovebox, but if you reach in further there's a huge shelf - perfect for storing the manual plus enough room for my NAV DVD drive plus enough room for the portable DVD player that I keep in the car. I don't even use the small pocket on the door of the glovebox.

    Hi robyneil,

I'm in the Peninsula up the road. Can you tell me where you purchased your 5 from (Almaden Mazda? OakTree? Sunnyvale?) and what kind of deal you got?
    Thanks.

Thanks to momstoy and perfectofc for revealing to me that the little pocket in the big door of the glove box isn't the glove box. You can store a whole library of CD's in there, although you have to marry your front seat passenger before you look in from the driver's seat. Otherwise people will talk.

I've made the appropriate changes at http://pagetuner.com/mazda5/

Today was test drive day. I drove three totally different crossovers including the Mazda 5.
After the many posts regarding the air conditioning, this was my first consideration. The car had been sitting in the sun, not protected in any way, so it was a good test. The drive included the sales person, myself and one other person who sat in the rear to see how the a/c would be back there. The exterior color of the car was platinum silver - Sport - so no auto climate control.. The temperature was over 100 degrees. The drive included city streets and a short 3 mile drive on the interstate - total time about twenty minutes.
It took about five minutes for the air from the vents to become cool. It was never really, really cold but it was quite comfortable for the two of us in the front. The back passenger got little of the cool air because in order for that to happen the fan would have had to be on high (level 4) the whole time and that makes it very noisy. So we reduced the fan to level 3 and then for a short time to level 2. Level 3 seemed to be the most satisfactory for the extreme heat. The heat emanating from the windshield seemed to be very noticeable and the dark interior didn't help but I was happy with the result. At one time the compressor shut off and I waited to see how long it would be before it came back on. It returned in a matter of a minute or two. There have been reports with the M3 that the compressor did not come back on until the air coming from the vents was warm. This was not the case with the M5. All in all a very favorable impression was made by this little car. I didn't like the audio system but it was the base system that comes with the Sport. I am 6'2" tall and was able to find a comfortable driving position by reclining the seatback and ratcheting the seat down and back. At 70 miles an hour on the highway the rpm's were 3000 but the engine did not boom. Wind and road noise was very acceptable.
I do think that tinting the side windows would help the A/C function better. Some other Crossovers have 100% UV filtered windshields. One that I drove later in the day had this feature and the heat dispersion was reduced substantially.
One interesting note - I test drove a Murano after driving the M5 and the A/C never got very cool. It was unable to handle the heat. Does this mean that some A/C units are not serviced correctly before being released for purchase or test drive? Other Nissans that I have driven have all had excellent A/C.
Tomorrow I will test drive the Subaru Tribeca and Subaru Forester. My basic feeling is that in extreme heat no Crossover can be totally satisfactory unless it has rear A/C vents so the Mazda 5 shouldn't be singled out for this shortcoming..

I had a salesman tell me it would cost $600.00 to bring a car from a California dealer. Does anyone know if this is correct or acceptable. Thanks.

Hey Coaster-I am also in Az!
  • momstoymomstoy Member Posts: 30
Coaster - thanks for the A/C comparison - I think that most of the problem is actually getting the cool air to the back without rear vents. A couple days ago we took a drive where I was freezing, but the people in the back were still warm - maybe if I finagle with the vent directions - a certain vent directional configuration would help things.out. Otherwise, we'll at least be looking into tinting the back windows.

The temps here have been in the mid 90's and the humidity has been beastly - so we've been using the A/C much more than normally.

    "making u-turns are the best"

OMG - the turning circle on this car is absolutely miniscule... hehe :)
  • robyneilrobyneil Member Posts: 26
If it's a deposit towards the car purchase then I think it's okay. The deposit is fair because the dealer needs to make sure you are committed to buy the car. You can get your deposit back if they cannot deliver the vehicle with your specifications at the specified delivery time. Also I learned only to leave the minimum deposit the dealer allows you to give them just in case the dealer decides not to return the deposit if you change your mind. If you do leave a deposit, get everything in writing: VIN#, specs, delivery date, negotiated accessories, price, etc... and have the dealer/owner sign it. I had them sign one on a plain white paper before I gave them my deposit. Even a change in the VIN# allows you to cancel the order and get your deposit back. They got me a 5 that had a different VIN and had wheel locks and they were trying to add $180 to the negotiated price. I told them I wanted my deposit back and suddenly changed their mind and gave us the wheel locks for free. The only drawback is that you're commiting to buy a vehicle you haven't seen yet or tested yet. So once it arrives, test the heck out of it and make sure it has all the options stated or negotiated. Be prepared and print out the invoice prices of all the options and accessories just in case the vehicle they ordered has some extras. This way, you'll know that wheel locks don't cost $180.

The dealer arranged to get a 5 for us that was around 60 miles away from another dealer in CA. When we got our 5, it had 68 on the meter. That's the other thing you have to watch out for. According to some sites I read, Anything over 100 miles is considered used and you can and must negotiate a lower price. You don't know if someone took it to Vegas over the weekend.

If the $600 is not towards the purchase of the car but an extra charge, it's not fair since it doesn't cost them little to drive the car to AZ (if at all from CA) and they wouldn't have to keep the car in their inventory once you buy it. They should work hard for you to get the vehicle. My dealer did:

    http://beatthecarsalesman.com/mailbag21.html

It's always good to at least get quotes from 2 dealers so you can tell them you can go somewhere else. This gives you some leverage if the deal does not go as planned. Before I ordered mine, I already had a price quote from another dealer and showed proof of it. Remember that they don't want to keep the ordered car in their inventory so use it to your advantage. I hope this helps.

No, not really. A car is still "new" in most states as long as it's still on the MSO and hasn't been titled in anyone's name. If they put 60 miles on it to do a trade between dealers this doesn't make it used. There isn't any specific milage limit that I've ever heard of that changes the legal status of a car (and I've worked for two different manufacturers over the years). That said, a couple of hundred miles is one thing, but if it's much more than that I would certainly try to get some additional cost taken off of the car as it was more than likely used as a demo or company car for one of the dealership's managers.

$600 to ship a car from CA to Arizona seems a bit high but is probably about right for the sort of money a retail customer would have to pay to hire a transport company to move the car. There's no way the car is being driven that far for a dealer trade, it would have to be shipped. Mazda's West Coast cars arrive by ship in L.A. where they are then delivered by truck to dealers. Certainly the right car can be ordered or found in incoming inventory and rerouted rather than pulling a car in dealer inventory from another state. If this is done then neither you or the dealer has to pay a dime for extra shipping cost.
  • robyneilrobyneil Member Posts: 26
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I actually meant if there're 100 miles that's unaccounted for like if the car was used as a demo or used by a dealer employee/relative...just to watch out for this:

68 miles - meter when bought
    - 60 miles - delivery miles
    --------------
8 miles - original meter during trade, if more than 100 miles you shoud ask why

A couple of years ago, I had friend whose husband was a manager at a dealership. She used one of the dealership demo vehicles on our trip to Vegas.

I finally found the site where I got the 100 miles warning. I'm remembered it wrong, but it did help me become more aware of what I should check. I apologize 100 miles is still considered new:

    http://beatthecarsalesman.com/mailbag27.html

I agree. The dealer may have to charge $600 for transport. It's always better not to leave a deposit anyway or pay extra. Avoid dealer scams as much as you can. You'll sleep better too. Honestly, I was worried during those 3 days. Better buy the car directly the CA dealer instead, than pay $600. We ordered the 5 because we wanted a white one. Don't do it unless you have to. I guess we got lucky with the dealer and didn't really have any problems.

According to some sites I read, Anything over 100 miles is considered used and you can and must negotiate a lower price.

I saw this same exact advice from Consumer Reports. In fact, word for word, here's what they recommend:

"The odometer should register no more than a few nominal miles of use. If there are more than 100 miles showing, it is likely that the car was used as a demonstrator or by dealership personnel or family members for occasional errands. If that is the case, the price should be reduced to reflect the car's used status."

Of course, if you know that it was driven 60 miles to be delivered to you, than those 60 miles should not be counted towards the 100. In other words, in your case I think that you could legitamately complain if there were more than 160 miles on the odometer. I'm not saying that 100 miles makes the car "used" in a "legal" sense, but it's certainy a reason to complain (and perhaps get a little bit of money back because of it).

I'm picking up my new Mazda5 tonight, and I'll definitely be unhappy if I see more than 100 miles on the odometer. When I bought my Honda Civic 3 years ago, it had 34 miles on it, perfectly acceptable...

    Hi Mactavish,

You mention that you have the invoice price (from carcost) of C$18,600. I suppose that's for the GS model? Do you also have the GT invoice price? If so ho much is it?

Since its been a little while since you picked up your GS, how's it riding?

Thanks for any help you can provide.
