    Cadub49er,

You did good with your deal. I got the same car (even the color combo!) here in NCal for $30,900 incl dest and protection package. My credit union gave me a 2.99 % for 48 months or 3.99 % for 60 months.

I'm finally taking a test drive in an '04 TL this week (if I ever shake this flu). I'm psyched!

I'm looking for an automatic w/nav in Anthracite Metallic. I got an internet quote from this dealer of $33,075 + dest., taxes & DMV fees which I think is pretty good.

In the meantime, I requested quotes through Acura's website and carsdirect.com. I've gotten responses from only 2 dealers so far. The first one has sent 3 e-mails to me without ever giving me a price. Needless to say I won't be doing business with them.

Second dealer quoted $34,650 + fees. Quite a difference. When I questioned his low discount, he said he could give me a lot off a non-nav. If nav's are in such high demand, why don't they simply produce more of them?

    Marquis-

How did you start with the price $33,995? $35,195 is MSRP w/auto/nav/destination.
  • marquis2marquis2 Member Posts: 25
I negotiated down to that price. They originally came back at full msrp, claiming the vehicle was too popular for them to discount. I stuck to my guns and negotiated each piece of the deal separately (car, accessories, trade).

I approached it like this. I told the sales guy I was looking at all the "usual suspects" in this class (TL, G35, S60, A4, 3-Series) but that the TL was at the top of my list. I said if I could get the deal I was looking for today, that I would forego even looking at the other cars and buy on the spot (I had already test driven the G35 and S60 at that point, but they didn't know that :-). They asked what I was looking for and I said $2000 off MSRP. I knew I wouldn't get there and was hoping to settle in around $1500 off MSRP (given what I've been reading on this group). Eventually they offered 1200 off and I jumped at it and moved on to the accessories and then the trade.

The accessories came in a bit higher than I wanted to pay and I had an idea of coming in around $2000-2100 for the accessories I wanted (MSRP - 10% + some for installation). We negotiated this to $2167, which was the claimed price to them including installation (admittedly at their inflated shop rates, but I thought I was doing pretty well at this point getting to the ballpark I was hoping to and didn't want to haggle over nickels and dimes and lose the deal altogether).

Then came the trade. They first offered $1500 for my car, which was a little low. The sales manager said he could probably get me another $500 for the trade, but would have to talk to the used car guy who wasn't in. I told them that at that point, I'd have to go home and think about it but that we were real close. The next day they called and offered me $2250 for the trade and I jumped at it.

All in all, I was pretty happy with where I wound up price wise. Combine that with the new 3.9 Acura financing deal and I'll be a real happy camper when I finally get the car.

BTW, I really enjoyed driving the G35. Of the cars I looked at, it was the most fun to drive. But the finish on the G35 was a little too plastic and cheap to me and the G35 is real wheel drive, unless you go with the AWD version. I'd probably wind up paying more for the G35 and I like the TL more overall anyway.

Bought the MDX last month for my wife. Unfortunately, fell in love with the TL while doing the deal. One of those "in love", can't sleep kind of things. Just did a "handshake" deal over the phone on the non-nav 5A and haven't even driven it. $1K over invoice and free all weather mats, but my thought was I should get it at invoice or close, just for coming back for another kick in the wallet. Headed out now to CARMAX to unload my Subaru. Another fun day had by all. Will let you know if this goes through tomorrow, and who with.

Would appreciate others experience/insight. I have followed Edmunds car discussions for a long time, but just made my first effort to get quotes for a car (2004 TL automatic W/O nav). There are several dealers in our greater metro area, but only one replied with essentially the suggestion that I call. Mostly what I got back was an email from Edmunds saying "Thank you for submitting your new car inquiry through Edmunds.com. We have been notified that your chosen dealer cannot service your request at this time. Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience." Is this a common response? Does it indicate that I really have no choice but to sit face to face at several agencies and go through the drill?
  • ihabermanihaberman Member Posts: 58
    Marquis-

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand. My best negotiated deal thus far is $34.2, but it includes the trunk tray, mud guards, winter floor mats, and wheel locks. So it sounds like we have similar deals.
  • marquis2marquis2 Member Posts: 25
Yes, I think they're pretty close. Basically, you're paying $200 more than me to get the mud guards and wheel locks. I couldn't try to get the mud guards because I wanted the underbody spoilers which preclude the use of the mud guards.

    Enjoy the car!

    Hey,

Do you pay tax on the delivery charge and the admin/tag/title fee?
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
Yes, it seems to be typical. The Edmunds dealer price response mechanism is useless, in my experience. The one dealer that responded to me simply wanted me to call. They then offered me MSRP until I started negotiating with them. This was just as useful as just calling them.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
Rules differ by state, but typically the destination charge (what you're referring to as "delivery") is part of the vehicle price and is taxed. All those other things you mentioned are typically not taxed.

Is the 04 Nav still touch screen? i know it has voice commands as well...I am thinking about trading in my 03 Max SE 6speed for a TL thinking of whether i should get the NAV or not..My current payments on my Max is 475 bought it for 26 at 2.9% trying to keep my payments around the same which is unlikely. The maximum payment i can tolerate is about 515...u guys think i can do it? 6speed is a required nav is not...thanx live in the dc area

    to achadha:

I just bought a 04 TL from Rosenthal Acura. I might not get the best deal but I was pleased with the buying experience I had.

Here's the price they quotod me:

    TL/6sp/nav: 300 off MSRP
    TL/auto/nav: 500 off MSRP
    TL/6sp/no nav: 800 off MSRP
    TL/auto/no nav: 1500 off MSRP

I know those prices might not be the best, but they also gave me a good deal on my trade-in. I had a 2002 Accord/LX/5sp/with side air bag/24850 miles. I checked the KBB and Edmunds for the max condition the trade-in was 13K. I went to carmax and they offered me 12.5K on that. However, Rosenthal offered me 13K for that car, which was the best number I could find from the internet. (there was some minor scratches on the back bumper).

Anyway, thought I should share this with you. Ask for Mike Zheng and he was really helpful. He told me that they still had many TL/auto/no nav in stock and you should be able to get at least 1500 off MSRP.

By the way, I bought an 6sp with nav (abyss blue) and I paid only 300 off MSRP. However, considering the trade-in I got from them against what I got from Carmax, it might be more than 300.
  • mobofemobofe Member Posts: 51
Highly unlikely you'll be able to keep those payments below $550 on a 5year unless you go the leasing route - which judging by your desire to ditch a relatively new car, might be the way to go.

Assuming you get the 6speed for $550/month (also unlikely) and you're worried about that $35 more/month in car payments, you can't afford the car, much less the thousands of dollars you'll have to fork out to pay off the bank on your maxima (i'd assume you bought it new with that 2.99% finance rate).

Dunno if you'll be able to do that. You're probably pretty far underwater on your existing car loan since you've been paying mostly interest in the first year and little to principal. Highly unlikely that the car has retained enough value in this short amount of time to compensate for the small amount you've paid on the total due on the loan.

As for monthly payment, work the numbers. Depends on what interest rate you can get, but for the most part at these low interest rates, the monthly payment is more driven by the loan amount financed rather than the actuall interest rate. Use the rate calculators on this site to get an idea of how much of a loan you can bite off to get a $515 payment and see if that, combined with the payoff you're almost certainly going to have on the Maxima, works for you.

Or as mobofe mentions, look into leasing if you're going to be this fickle about how long you drive a car. But once you get into a lease, it will be more difficult to get out of it when the next car that strikes your fancy comes along while you're in the contract :-)

In short, unless you totally hate your Maxima, I'd stick with it for at least another year or two and get rid of it then.

    Larry:

Rosenthal offered me good pricing on e-mail vs. the other dealers here in DC. Just came from lunch in Tyson's and a new TL pulls in as I left.
Driver said he got his TL/Nav/6sp 500 under MSRP from Radley. So you probably did OK

Folks, you are just ASKING for spam by posting your email addresses publicly.

The Town Hall has a feature where you can have your email address public in your profile so that folks who are LOGGED IN and click on your name can find it. This keeps it hidden from the "bots" that troll easily accessible webpages looking for addresses, but lets other community members find it if you want them to be able to contact you.

I highly recommend that you make your address public in your profile if that's what you want to do and NEVER post it out in the open in plain text on any web page.

    Hope this is helpful!

    :-)

about some recent messages asking for info by email -- what you folks have asked for can be posted here without violating any of our rules (see the note at the top of the discussion for those rules, plus, of course, your Membership Agreement linked on the left side of the page).

It would be really great if people would share their info here for all of the community to benefit. Thanks!!

$250 processing fee plus 750 over invoice for a TL/auto/no nav (so really $1K over invoice). You may be able to match or better...or you may have to have also bought an MDX from the same dealership recently. Free all weather mats, once we found them (outstanding mats, by the way). Radley at Bailey's Crossing. Call the Edmonds search internet number. Expect all sales agents can work a fair deal, but I just really liked working w/Mohamad. Raved about him on the MDX post a few weeks back, so will leave it at that. Agree w/above, the 6M w/nav won't go cheap. For those wondering if the 5.1 DTS/Audio DVD in a quiet, closed environment is alone worth eating some negative equity and dumping your current ride, YESSSSSSS. I traded a fairly tight Subaru Outback H6 VDC. If I'd kept the car and just wanted audio clairity, I'd have paid thousands to get what the TL all but tosses in for chump change. Normal XM, radio and traditional CDs sound very nice. But put in the material made for the system and you'll quickly recall that much of life boils down to chemistry and physics. The right notes and the right pitch with the right clairity in the right order...well, you get it. Brought a real grin to my face. My wife even told me to crank the music up when I took her for the obligitory "here's where your paycheck is going honey" ride. Thirteen years, that is a first. Read a post here or similar countering a recent critical review of the sound system. For my money, the system IS an order of magnitude better than anything else offered factory fresh at the $31 to $34K range; others may catch up eventually, but not yet. If getting the 5A, you may want to use the auto stick now and then, or drive aggressively; milktoast nose-to-tail driving leaves it grumbling along at about 1300 RPMs unless you kick it. As much as I wanted the stick for that 20 percent of the time I really need to feel in control, just had too many other needs pulling against it. Regardless, at 3.9% x 60 months, this is a car to buy. I settled on the anthrocite w/ebony--a nice combo. The ebony ends up looking charchol grey not like patent leather. Enjoy.

Anyone see 72 month financing I think I could get into a TL with 72 month financing?
  • bmwdougbmwdoug Member Posts: 248
Check out your local credit union, especially if you have access to an Educators Credit Union. My Credit Union will go all the way to 84 months at 4%
  • frqwntbyrfrqwntbyr Member Posts: 14
I went 72 months on the MDX. Acura used Onyx Acceptance Corp at about 4.64, 100 percent if you wanted it. You'd have the option to self-insure or get gap insurance. I put 10 percent down, but it wasn't required. Looks like I left money on the table that my dealer picked up if I passed on 4 percent elsewhere. Reason enough for this site to exist! Good luck
  • prophet2prophet2 Member Posts: 372
My sister called the dealer about the 3.9% rate she was told about. They claimed she can't get it because "they already turned the papers in." To whom? Sounds like getting jerked around.

I'm calling the VP (son of the now semi-retired original owner), who runs all their dealerships, to complain about this. I've referred 80+ deals to them since the '90s, so he'd better hear me out!

It can't be because she can't qualify with her 750 FICO! They say she has to pay the 4.9% APR. It isn't about the 1.0% spread: it's a matter of disrespect and bad faith!
  • marquis2marquis2 Member Posts: 25
You're right....that's total BS! SHe hasn't even taken delivery of the car yet. If they won't budge, tell them she'll walk from the deal and get the car (and financing) elsewhere.

    Good luck.
  • mobofemobofe Member Posts: 51
how many people let that % slide - frankly, if the dealership had any ounce of intelligence, much less integrity, they will realize the jig is up and give your sis the real deal. Whatever the case, if i had a choice, I would never do business again with this bunch.
  • marquis2marquis2 Member Posts: 25
You're hitting the nail on the head there. That's what they're betting on, that she'll just take the "deal" and get the car. As you get further into a deal, you tend to get more excited about getting the car and can sometimes give in on things you might have otherwise earlier on in the deal. It's just human nature. I suspect that once prophet2 pushes back hard enough, they'll cave in.

With that said however, I don't know if I would never take any business back there again based on this one incident. I suspect it's fairly common practice. The dealerships aren't out to make any friends, they're trying to maximize their profit margins. They realize that most of the poor schmucks out there would just cave into the little things they try to pull over on you. But once they realize that you don't fall into the "poor [non-permissible content removed]" category on a given item, then they'll usually start to backpedal since they would rather not lose a paying customer. So you need to take the entire experience into account, not just a single part of it to determine if you would do business with them again. But I would definitely express my displeasure in no uncertain terms.

I'm in the middle of negotiating the final terms on my new TL and I'm getting yanked around a little bit about the inclusion of car mats and a trunk tray after we already had a deal that included them. Yeah, it ticks me off a little bit, but overall I was pleased with the way the whole process went, so I'm happy with the dealership so far and would take future business back to them (so far...I haven't actually closed the deal yet :-)
  • mobofemobofe Member Posts: 51
if you haven't closed yet, get them to throw in some decent tires - those oems suck to high heaven. :)lol

I'm in the Harrisburg, PA area & my test drive has me enamored of a TL. There's only 1 dealer in the area & they don't seem eager to deal. Has anyone had a good experience buying a TL in this area? Thanks!

You're only 3-4 hours away from the best deals in Neew Jersey. You can choose to pay a $1,000-$1,500 more in PA, of course.

I am about to buy my first car. Actually it is for my soon to be wife, and it looks like it is going to be the TL W/NAV. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any dealers in the middle TN area. What kind of discounts are you seeing withing a reasonable distance?

dulnev - Any specifics as to dealers & dollars in NJ will be appreciated!
  • frqwntbyrfrqwntbyr Member Posts: 14
When I sat down w/the finance guy (having already seen folks huddling around a bit), his first words were "well, I see here we did the 4.64 at 72 months before...." I expect he already knew I'd told the salesman I wanted the 3.9. They have to try, it is their job. He likely tested me to see if I knew it as fact or was just fishing. I explained that it is all over the Edmunds board (and elsewhere), then listed the inclusive dates read above. We quickly moved on; no harm no foul. I doubt I'd have been offered the rate out of the blue, but that isn't their job--unless they've already made a killing and choose to be kind, or need it to make the deal. On a close deal, all is fair short or lying, cheating and stealing (all of which are in the eye of the beholder). In the end, some folks have to pay more than others so that we continue to get free coffee and pastries when we visit a thriving car business employing folks who pay taxes and shop. Darwin rules.

I had a great experience at Jones Acura in Lancaster. Sales guy was John Feeman. Got a WDP/Parchment non-Nav off of the lot on 11/29. Awesome car!

Just scroll up several pages and you'll see at least two posts of people (including myself) who bought from Montclaire Acura near Newark for $1,500 - $2,000 off MSRP for the NAVI version.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
It's wonderful that you had a great experience, but what about price? I called a bunch of PA dealers and none were willing to offer more than $500 discount.
  • frqwntbyrfrqwntbyr Member Posts: 14
Unless you've already tried and failed, no matter how far you have to drive (maybe have someone who owes you a big favor follow you). Go to the nearest CARMAX. Take your registration, payoff info (if any), all the keys, and have it ready to sell. You'll likely be out of there w/in 90 minutes with at least a thousand more than you could sell it to an individual, and no hassle. Sold them an 01 Passat and an 02 Subaru w/in the past month and couldn't be more pleased.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
"I brought my own financing and had no trade, both of which helped get the price down."

Actually, getting financed through the dealer almost always improves your chances of getting a better deal. That's because they get kickbacks from lenders.

As far as trade-in, I also recommend Carmax. Sold my 2003 TL-S to them couple of weeks ago. Got a great deal and it couldn't be easier.
  • prophet2prophet2 Member Posts: 372
They wised up as the GSM got in the act and overruled the F&I guy. She got the 3.9% rate. The mere mention of me getting the ear of the VP was apparently enough. That plus their hope that I'll take delivery of the first '05 RL sometime in August 2004.

It depends on whether the new RL appeals to me. There is a high probability that I'll take an anthracite TL in a couple of months. And keep my '96 RL as a spare set of wheels. I'll keep this incident in mind and remind them of it when working my own deal.
  • marquis2marquis2 Member Posts: 25
I negotiated a deal for my new TL the other day. I want to get it in anthracite/ebony w/nav. Dealer didn't have it in stock but said he shouldn't have any problems finding it. The dealer called today and said that they *are* having troubles finding one and asked if I had an alternate color set. He mentioned having a black/ebony one on the lot, but I don't want the black. I told him I wasn't interested in it, but that I would give an alternate color some thought.

My first choice was the green, but it doesn't come with ebony interior. I like the ebony interior the best, so that limits the exterior choices I can choose from.

Should I even be thinking about going to an alternate color at this point or should I stick to my guns? From the posts on this board, the anthracite/ebony combination does seem to be a popular choice. I'm in New England (MA to be exact, dealer is in Rhode Island). Should I seek out another dealer who might search a little harder? I tried going over to the Montclair site and searching their inventory, but they don't let you get to that level of detail in searching.

    Just wondering what others think...thanks.
  • scott31scott31 Member Posts: 292
My opinion on color choice is don't compromise. I would not want to have a car for 3-4 years (I lease) that wasn't the color I wanted.

It took the dealer 6 weeks to locate my blk/blk '95 Legend LS Coupe 6-speed.

I (like you) only want the Ebony interior, so when I got my '03 TL-S w/nav, it really narrowed the color choices.
  • scott31scott31 Member Posts: 292
How much did they give you for your TL-S?
  • mobofemobofe Member Posts: 51
I personally had to compromise on color. I wanted an anthracite/black but ended up with anthracite/quartz b/c I NEEDED a car asap. As has been mentioned, most dealerships only have the pathetic supply of 1 NAVI, very true in the NE area.

If you have time and money (b/c you'll probably get a better deal taking something off their lot) to shop around, I'd say take the time to source for that combo.

With regards to other combos - i think black on black is just too dark, silver is out of the question as it looks too much like a honda civic on the road:); interior wise, i'd much prefer the modern alumninum/carbon trim than the wood (which imho, looks cheesy).

acurapeabody/lewisautos in VT might be people to deal with - bought mine from the latter but both of them were decent enough not to open the conversation with, "yeah, these cars only go for MSRP".
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
It was $23,500 for 2003 TL-S without navi and with 10,500 miles.
  • marquis2marquis2 Member Posts: 25
Funny, Lewis Autos is where I saw my first TL (I just moved from Waitsfield back down to MA). This was a couple months ago, so they did open the conversation with "these only go for MSRP". :-)

I've already negotiated a deal for the TL (see my post a few pages back from a couple of days ago). I'm just going back and forth over whether to compromise on the color combo. I don't need the car asap, so I can afford to wait. The ebony interior is almost non-negotiable in my mind so that limits my exterior color choices. The quartz is nice, but I like the look of the all black with the carbon trim that much better. I totally agree with you on the cheeziness of the "wood" finish in the lighter interiors. It's a shame they don't offer the green with the ebony interior, cause I might go with that. Black/black is out (don't want the hassle of another black car), agree with you as well on the look of the silver. I think that just leaves me with the red and "desert mist".

    Ahh....decisions, decisions.
  • ihabermanihaberman Member Posts: 58
Had negotiated the purchase of TWO '04 TLs w/NAVI (automatic) for $34K even (friend of mine and I are buying at the same time to increase leverage). Previous discussions with the dealer had included mud guards, winter floor mats, trunk tray, and wheel locks thrown in (overall, a fair deal from what I've negotiated with other local market dealers). Once I was handed the bill of sale, those items were not on there, much to my dismay. Dealer said they could now sell it to me at cost ($350 they say!). I walked out. Told the salesperson to call me when they could sell me the car we had agreed upon, but that I would call other dealers back as well.

Anybody here bought a 94 TL from any dealers in east central NC, more specifically the Raleigh/Fayetteville area? I will be attempting to purchase a TL in that area soon.
