Thanks delmar! I was mainly curious to see whether dealers would be more willing to negotiate a better price for a sale if they know it would be immediate, or if it wouldn't matter. I did see the list a few days ago, and was surprised to learn that Santa Monica was being so free on their pricing-in such an expensive area I would have thought that they would be of the higher end...go figure. Thanks again for the info and I'll also post all the prices I was quoted when I receive them.

In Southern California...it is worth driving 1 hour to save thousands of dollars.

As for a good connection with the dealers....for servicing, you don't need to go to the dealer where you purchased your car. All dealers will welcome you with open arms as they wish to make the all mighty buck in servicing. They will welcome you for warranty work as well as all general servicing...so that shouldn't be a determining factor.

ariegnr...well..if there is a little concern with the timing...sure...wait a few days or week. Perhaps it is worthwhile to wait for mid-week when there is a little less foot traffic (I tend to initiate my deals mid week).

As for your surprise about Santa Monica with their price in such an 'expensive' area. My take is there is great competition in the LA area....as there are not only an abundance of LA dealers, but also other brands. Within the Santa Monica area, perhaps the demographics are where Acura plays second fiddle and therefore they must offer improved pricing.

Now...the other thing about the LA market. While you did see the price list provided a few days ago....the sequencing of pricing constantly changes. For instance...when I bought 2 mos ago...the order of pricing was very different. So make sure to continue to get quotes from a diverse set of dealers because an alternate dealer may be able to provide a better deal.

Also...the listing of those with protection packages...I think it is slightly off. I know that the DCH dealerships of Norm Reeves Temecula and believe the Tustin location includes the protection package. Just that they do not overtly indicate unless asked.

And make sure you know that the initial pricing isn't the final price. You can always attempt to get improved pricing.

delmar: first off, thanks for taking the time to reply to my posts-it's great to have a helpful SoCal person on the boards. Once I get the initial quotes back, would you recommend responding by email, phone, or does it not matter? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I've just never done this before, and I haven't been able to find much info on the order in which I should be doing this. Thanks again in advance.

ariegnr...I just finished negotiating for and purchasing my 05 TL automatic with Nav in So Cal. I think I have beat all the prices on this boards, but only by a little. I went with Keyes in northern LA, as they said that they would meet or beat anyone's price...actually a lot of dealers said that, but Keyes was the only one would beat the lowest price I got. I live in northern SD county but found that LA is by far a better market to shop for cars. For reference, I sent out my price requests on Monday, and had the prices in from all dealers by early wednesday. I finialized the price wednesday night and made my way up to Keys on Friday. I sent out e-mails to 8 dealerships in the SD and LA area...here are my rough prices (including dest and fees but not TTL):
    Santa Monica - $31,599
Weir Canyon - $32,915...they have a $500 price match guarantee..they could not beat my best price. I am going to stop by there tomorrow to see if they actually pay off on their guarantee, or if they come up with some excuse not to honor it.
    Glendale - $33, 500
    Hoehn Carlsbad - $33, 505
    Acura 101 - $32,955
    Temecula - $32,755
Tustin - was the last to retun my price request. Never gave me a price quote but said that he could not beat the price that I had.
Keyes - Never did give me a price, but when I gave them my low offer, the beat it as promised. Buying process was quick and straightforward...best car buying experience that I've had.

A lot of the dealers may have gone lower, but when I told my low price they told me that they could not beat it, so they never bothered to counter. All of them did say that Keyes was going to try to pull a fast one on me and change the pricing when I got to the dealership, but they did not and i've got the contract to prove it. They gave me exactly the price that they told me they would and without a lot of fuss. I don't think they were thrilled to let it go for the price I got, but they were true to their word with their price match.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions and I will provide whatever help I can. Good luck!
BTW...many thanks to Delmar1 for all his tips on how to go about purchasing this car. They were helpful for me and I love my new car.

    Guys,

In Dallas people have been consistently getting TL's w/nav in the $32,500-$33,000 range. You may wish to try there if you are dead set on getting the best prices...especially if you have a reason to go to Dallas anyway. Try emailing for quotes in the DFW region and see where it gets you...a lot of people have had good results with Vandergriff... and from my experience on the boards over the last 6 months, Dallas is usually cheaper than Austin or Houston for whatever reasons.

    Good luck.

This is an awesome forum...long time observer, first time to post. Looking to buy a Black/Black 05 TL w/NAV or Anthracite/Black in central PA. Got a quote from Bobby Rahal for 33K, same at Apple Acura in Lancaster.
I have seen better deals in NJ or Philly area, any suggestions as to what to do? i heard the '06 will be here soon? Any changes to expect???
Any comments would be helpful. :)

Delmar, there is a difference between one hundred dollars and one thousand dollars.
I was simply stating the fact that my time is worth more than that. I would not waste away 2-3 Saturdays and or hours on the internet over $100. I have a family that likes my attention. In the Houston market, there has not been anyone post that received a better deal from another dealer by $1,000. If you like the car, get a good deal and buy it.

On the service thing, I just thought it would be a good idea to have a contact at the dealership that could get you things like an extra remote if you lost one or a discount on an accessory you wanted.
  • delmar1delmar1 Member Posts: 744
Gotcha... However...pricing over the internet is quick and easy. Two months ago...obtained quotes about 10 dealers through the Edmunds site...where I filled out about three forms. Took me probably about 10 mins max for all three. Squeezed out the weak players and delt with the top 3rd. Swapped about five emails...and poof done. Probably spent a total of an hour and saved big $. VERY painless.

Wow...if you could get an extra remote and key at a later time...that would be an accomplishment. I don't have the exact price...but you are looking at about $150-200 there (folks...don't lose keys...that is a bad thing).

Any case...I totally understand your thoughts. But at the same time, don't get limited from where you buy because of the possiblities of perks or belief it is mandatory to have your car serviced where it was purchased.
  • delmar1delmar1 Member Posts: 744
    arignr.....any time...glad I could help.

In regards how do you maintain contact with the dealer once you get an quote. What I suggest is that since your first reply back from the dealer is via email (in most cases)...you reply through the same mode (IF the reponse you have is simple and straight forward). They should be fairly quick in responding to your email...most of the time within the day. Once you do knock down the list to a handful...there is where you can devote more time and attention to finalizing your deal and to speak personally with the person to determine if the person is a land-shark or is somewhat sincere.

All questions are good and none stupid. And remember...there is no robotic simple approach. Just do what you feel like doing. You won't get your hands slapped.

If you should have any questions...I am sure there are plenty of folks that will assist.

???What do you all say? Let us help others get a great deal with a great buying experience!
  • delmar1delmar1 Member Posts: 744
jbdriver....nah nah...you did the deal on your own. And I wasn't the only one that assisted. You learned from everyone on this board. Enjoy that new blazing car...and make sure to tell us which colors and features you selected.

btw...I try to help others here because I learned and saved $ from reading the posts here. I was helped ... so I will help. And I hope that others that were helped will also assist others here on pricing and on other TL boards.

I hope this is the right forum for this topic. Lets see, I am looking at a black/Tan TL with 20K miles for $26,900. This seem like a good deal to me but I would love some input from informed forum members like the people here.
    Thanks Dudes

Anyone have good places to shop? I'd like to be in the $30,000 range before TTL for a non navi.
  • mjfloodmjflood Member Posts: 9
Yes I drove to Beaumont and it is the same distance from my house there as it is to your dealership. If anybody is wondering acurainternet is the internet sales person at Gillman in Houston. ./wave. My wife wanted to go to Beaumont so we went it was a nice experience. For all of you to know I am not fighting over $100 I am looking at a 500 to 600 difference. I asked acurainternet to put his price in writing. He doesn't trust me enough to do it so I don't trust him enough to visit his dealership. If he can really offer that price then he should put it in writing. I think you need to adjust your thinking. You HAD the oppurtunity to earn my business and you missed out.

For those people in the Houston area looking to buy you might want to consider Beaumont. I have not made any deals with them but they were very nice and upfront. They do not have as much inventory as the other big dealers in Houston do but I am in no emergency rush to buy a car. i am going to buy when the deal is right.
  • delmar1delmar1 Member Posts: 744
Head over to the Kelly Bluebook website (www.kbb.com) to check out what is the relative value of a used TL with the mileage indicated.

My gut instincts....sounds a perhaps a little rich considering that brand new spanking TLs are had a tad above $30k.
  • delmar1delmar1 Member Posts: 744
Folks....I mentioned the case that pricing varies tremendously amonst buyers and time periods. Look at posts #4255 and #4222 which were posted within days. Pretty much the same dealers....but very very different pricing within the same dealer.

Lowest price in both were from Santa Monica. One at $31,799 other at $31,599. I realize that it is only a $200 difference...but that is huge when you are pinching below 'invoice'.

Also...'jbdriver' once again demonstrated that geography plays a big big difference in pricing. San Diego stinks...driving a little up north saves a lot. Bet it is true in many other parts of the nation...where you folks just need to search for cars in various markets.

Third observation....don't allow other deter you. That is...many indicated that Keyes was going to bait and switch...nope...Jbdriver got what he wanted at a great price.

'jbdriver'...I now know you are not 'pman2005tl'. Thought you changed your sign-on name.
  • nightcrawler29nightcrawler29 Member Posts: 146
Yeah, Sterling McCall is a bit tougher to deal with and for me, they never went bellow $33k... I think you should be able to get it at $35K OTD... I got it at that price from a dealer in Arlington, TX. Just tell them you won't spend a dime over your target OTD price. And you shouldn't have a problem considering its pretty close to the end of month.
  • nightcrawler29nightcrawler29 Member Posts: 146
Yes, I also agree that selling your car privately is better than trading it in.. you have a better chance of getting more money than what a dealer would offer. Problem is that depending on the value of the car, it might take some time, and you might also have to deal with some low-lifes with high expectations, but if you are not in a hurry then give it a try.... and it goes for those who have leases as well.
  • nightcrawler29nightcrawler29 Member Posts: 146
I say email and phone are the best ways to buy. A lot of dealers will reply to you with some non-sense trying to avoid giving you a quote, and others would be straight forward. Just keep pushing, and never go to the dealership (as they ask you to) because they will get you right there. My suggestion would be to gather all the emails from all the different dealerships you plan to request quotes from, and send out one single email stating type of car, color, options, etc. You will get all types of responses, but just stick to the ones that give you numbers... the others will follow up later. Once you select a dealer, reach an agreement, and then have them fax or email the details of the transaction including OTD price in writing to avoid having you drive x hours so they can change the numbers on you.

In the "spirit of Delmar", since I benefitted from the information offered by others in this forum, I thought it only fair to share the data I gathered during my recent quest to buy a TL with automatic and navigation in the Washington, DC area (Montgomery County, MD, to be exact). Here are the prices I obtained using the "request a quote" feature on the Acura web site. All prices include destination fee:

Rosenthal Acura (Gaithersburg, MD) - 32,573 + 95 proc. (price received in person)
    Pohanka Acura (Chantilly, VA) - 32,890 + 249 proc.
    Chevy Chase Acura (Bethesda, MD) - 33,099 + 100 proc.-incl. wheel locks/sp. gards)
Frankel Acura (Cockeysville, MD) - 33,465 + 100 proc. - incl. "protection pkg."
Criswell Acura (Annapolis, MD) - 33,600 + ~100 proc. - incl. "protection pkg."
Karen Radley Acura (Woodbr., VA) - 33,500 + 245 proc.

After gathering quotes from the above dealers (with the exception of Rosenthal Acura, which is closest to me and where I did my test drives), I stopped by Rosenthal during their "red tag sale" ;) this weekend. After a small amount of negotiating, the salesman went to "the manager" to see what he was willing to do. The salesman came back and said he'd give me the car at invoice if I would take a car they had in inventory (not a problem, since they had 1 with the color combo I wanted - silver/quartz). Although the price wasn't as low as some were able to negotiate in LA, I didn't get the feeling I was going to do much better than this in my area and didn't want to wait until the selection deteriorated.

In any case, I'll be picking up the car next weekend and am sure I'll be happy with it. Hopefully, this info will be helpful to those shopping in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area.

P.S. - Delmar - thanks for all of the helpful info.

    jbdriver,

thanks for the great info. my gf is thinking about buying a 2005 TL with navi in the LA area.

    either silver/black or grey/black

Just a couple of quick questions:

    Is yours with auto trans?
how much lower did keyes beat the santa monica dealer price by? was it > $100?

    thanks in advance.

Mine was black/black with an auto trans. The black/black was harder to find...Santa Monica actually didn't have one in stock (although they said that they could get one and if there price was that much better, I easily could have waited. I think you'll have a much easier time finding the silver or grey...those were my 2nd and 3rd choices respectively.

When it came to the price...I actually finagled a little more out of Santa Monica than what I posted, but not much...<$250...Keyes matched), but Keyes included wheel locks and mud guards and they had the black/black in stock. Basically Keyes told me that they would meet or beat any price that I got, and they did.

'ed94080'...Also to point out....just in case...there is no price differential between a TL with automatic or manual transmissions.

Yeah, believe it or not, my wife encouraged me to get this color combo. Black cars look great when they're clean. but look like hell when they're dirty....but oh those days when it's clean. :shades:

    Thank you so much, montgomctymd!!

I live in Frederick, MD and work at Bethesda, MD. I had some families coming from out of town this past weekend and I didn't make it to their "red tag sale" at Rosenthal Acura.

The internet quote I got from Rosenthal Acura (8/20 Saturady) is $33,670 (including $570 destination) for TL w/ Nav. So you are doing really GREAT and now I know what to ask for!! So thanks again!!
  • socalbyrsocalbyr Member Posts: 15
Yup, their price is the lowest around here in LA. I got my TL with navi fm them a couple of days before they went this low...paid $300 more. However, I had a trade and this is where I haggled with them. In the end, they offered more than what I was getting fm other dealers so I was happy. :)

This really pertains to buyers in Florida:

I want to retract one of my earlier posts in regards to my positive buying experience with ACURA OF SOUTH FLORIDA.

About a month ago, I bought my TL Blue/ Camel w/ Navigation from ACURA OF SOUTH FLORIDA in Hollywood, Florida for $35,629.00. This price included a nose mask & gap insurance.

When I initially negotiated the car, the sales rep and I agreed on a OTD price of $34,646.00 ( transfer tag). However, when I got to the dealership and in the finance manager's office, I added gap insurance and a full nose mask and ended up getting a new registration as opposed to a transfer of tag. This brought my (SHOULD HAVE ACTUALLY PAID) price up to $35,425.00.
    This breaks down as:
34,646- price of the car OTD
    495.00- Gap
    169- Bra
115- Difference between new tag & transfer
    ________
    35,425.00

However, I did not realize the final number on the finance contract was 35,629.00 which was $204 more than what I should have paid. I went ahead without realizing and signed the paperwork and drove the car home. When I got home, I realized the mistake. As a consequence, I contacted my sales associate and was assured everything would be taken care of and the money would be refunded back to me.

While this was going on, my inherent trust in people to follow through with their word compelled me to give positive feedback to American Honda, Edmunds Forums as well as Acura in regards to my "positive" experience.

After one whole long month of phone calls, messages, etc., I finally concluded this saga. I had a conference call today with my sales rep, General Manager, Sales Manager and Finance Manager. Everyone TRIED to convince me that the figure was accurate and that I was mistaken in believing that when you purchase a car everyone pays Doc stamp/ fees.
I TRIED convincing them all that I received a quote in writing that my OTD price including everything would be $34,646 ( and that included doc stamps/ fees). A reasonable person would assume that included everything???

Further, they maintained that everyone pays doc stamp/fees ON TOP of the quoted amount WHEN YOU FINANCE A CAR. That being said, my sales rep as well as the finance manager knew at least one week prior to me driving 3.5 hours to their dealership that I would be financing. Obviously, I relayed that to them but I guess I was speaking Egyptian because my quoted price, on paper, OTD, APPARENTLY did not include doc stamp/ fees.

I made all of them a suggestion. One of which was that in the future they should advise their customers, whether on paper or verbally, that their quote OTD was not inclusive, and that they would end up paying a "doc stamp/fee."
I additionally posed the question, " Is it is worth it to you to have a unsatisfied customer who may / may not got a great deal on car to walk away from your dealership vowing never to do business again either thorugh purchasing or servicing?" Their answer- they did not care.

Look, putting aside the $200 something dollars, I did get a deal on the car ( at least IMO). I got the TL I wanted in the color combo I wanted and I have absolutely no issues with the car.
Will I contact AMFC and change my opinion?- YES
Will I contact Acura of America and change my opinion?- YES
I will never purchase another car or service my car at that dealership.
Does OTD pricing which includes everything written on paper according to Acura of South Florida actually mean everything?- NO

I guess this is one of those stories that you hear about when dealers add on fees once you get to the dealership ( or after the deal us done in my case) .

Well, I will wind up this long tear-jerker. Thanks for taking the time to read my "Venting." Any thoughts or comments are welcomed.

BTW, they actually had the nerve to thank me for sending them a customer from this forum. Someone actually printed out my post and brought it to them and apparently, the customer brought from them as a result of my post. I am glad that someone did benefit from my posting and I hope they got the deal without the hassle that I faced.
They ( all the managers) actually asked me, " Why did you say good things about us if you are so unhappy?" My response was- "because I believe people are inherently good and follow through with their word. You have done nothing to lose my trust and I tried to help others as well as your dealership out from my own goodwill." No response to that statement....

For those of you considering this dealer for your next purchase- you might or might not get a good deal; watch your 6 when you get a quote for "EVERYTHING OTD."

    Regards,
    Joe

I am getting the TL soon and I know the dealer is going to try selling me the 7yr/100K Acuracare warranty. I think I'll likely keep the car 6-7 years. Is it worth it? What has been other people's experience? I'll really appreciate your input.
  • montgomctymdmontgomctymd Member Posts: 4
juliemd - You're quite welcome. Best of luck with your negotiations. Rosenthal had about 30 TL's in their storage lot on Saturday, so hopefully they're eager to sell one to you. Let us know how you end up doing (even if you get a better price than I did!).

For those of you who already own a TL, do you think there's any value in getting the body side molding? Does it really help prevent scratches and dings or is it only an opportunity for the dealer to make additional $? Thanks in advance for any opinions.

    Hi there,

What kind of pricing are people seeing in the Houston area and from which dealerships?

Also, awilksta, which dealership offered you 33000 plus TT&L?

I live in Louisiana and the prices here suck.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for you input.

Again this is for a TL w/o nav. Monday morning I ended up haggling with the guy who had given me a test drive (I didn't get an internet quote from his dealership) and he went from 31,750 down to 31,000. I didn't tell him my other quotes, but did say from my research 30,500 seemed fair and that I had lower offers (30,998 and 30,990). He didn't budge and let me walk. I then went to Carland where I had gotten the lowest quote, telling the dealer there that I only had a minute due to a meeting (which was true). I explained to him as well my seeing 30,500 as fair, and asked if he was willing to do anything to finish a deal before I left. He came back around 30,875 (33,500 OTD), which I took. In retrospect I wish I had asked him to meet me halfway at 30,750 (nothing would have been lost). Anyway, it's over now and I love my TL. :shades:

Can anyone please tell me what is a reasonable price to pay for a dealer to ship in a car from another dealer (assuming within a dozen states or so)? We're getting quotes of $300-$1000 for them to trailer it..this seems high...is it? Also, what have people paid when they shipped the car themselves? Looking to make a purchase tomorrow, so your help is appreciated! :)

    Hi all,

Considerng a TL with Auto/Nav and from this board, it seems the price to shoot for (before tax, tag, etc) is $31,500-$32,000. Assuming we go in and offer $32,000 for a car on the lot, how much would the dealer be making in this instance? I'm assuming no other dealer "fees" would be added to that $32K number.

    Thanks!

Which dealership quoted you the lowest price? I live in the North Bay and plan on buying within the next week or so.
  • jbdriverjbdriver Member Posts: 29
Aaron, The invoice on an auto/nav is $32,555 but I was able to get mine for about $1,200 less than that...but that is in LA with a lot of price competition. I am not sure if there was some sort of dealer holdback or how the dealer was able to go that low, but a lot of the dealers I talked to in LA would not go below invoice for a car on the lot or a car coming onto the lot. They said they I wouldn't be able to finalize the deal at the price I had been quoted, but I did as did someone else who posted in the last day or so (at the same dealership)..I am not sure why a couple of dealers were able to go so much lower...maybe you have to go to a dealer that does a lot of volume to get the lower prices...sorry I'm not of more help, but someone lurking out there will chime in with another answer I'm sure. Good luck.

The lowest price in the first round of negotation was quoted by Stevens Creek Acura at 32,255. I haven't finished my second round yet, but so far things aren't looking like it will go much below that, although several other dealers seemed willing to match if I went that day.

I think you got a great deal, I paid 22,300 for a 2003 TL Sport with 44000 miles on June 1, 2005. I like the car

    Moral of the story...

1- When dealing through phone or internet with dealer, always reach a verbal agreement.
2- Once you get a verbal agreement, have dealer fax/email you ALL the details of the deal including either Nav or non-Nav, color choice, options, car vin#, agreed base price, and OTD cost (which should include tax, title, license, doc fees) and financing.
3- Never ever buy any extra options in finance, as they will work out new numbers.
4- test drive the car and ask questions
5- Any promises are worthless unless specifically written on the contract.
6- There's no such thing as an ethical car salesman, as long as they make a living on 100% commission.
7- ALWAYS read your contract... if it takes to long, who cares! let them wait.
8- If they were honest and treated you well, score them a 10 on the Customer Satisfaction surveys. If they were dishonest, well choose whatever score you feel is more appropriate.

I don't knw what the Acuracare warranty is, but I wouldn't get it anyway. There is a factory warranty of I think 50k miles. Most likely, if you take good care of the car, and it lasts you for that long, then it is unlikely it would develop any problems. Don't know, if you feel comfortable buying warranties then go for it, but I don't think its worth it. Acura wants to keep a reputation for being a high end good quality product, so it wouldn't be to their advantage to sell you a lemon, and then have you make a big fuzz about it. Besides, aside from the rattles on the 2004 model, seems like the 2005 model is pretty sound.

the body side molding?... I think its useless. But it really depends on where you park. But I've found the frame to be pretty tough and the paint is good...besides, that side molding makes it look terrible... but that's only my opinion. :P
