Play out this month see were pricing takes you on your models , colors you like. If you could find a real good deal on a 16 Accord 2500 below invoice or better buy it. Otherwise hold out and buy a 17 model in Oct / Nov / Dec.

Sounds like a plan Brian. Is best approach still to send a bcc email to as many Honda internet directors as possible? I am in Dallas. 20 or more dealers within a hundred miles. Leave phone number out of email to get them to email me a price? Should I tell them no trade and I will purchase or finance? Tell them what County I am in for taxes and ask for total OTD price? Suggestions on wording style? I am sure these guys have seen and heard it all. I would like to come across nice and not desperate.
  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
Thanks Brian. I got through September of 2014 in your comments. No specific email requests found. I think I get the just of it, though. Just make sure in the email they know I want to buy now, make a real offer, and offer CC deposit to show I am serious. I do not have a trade which is good news.

    A few questions.

    1. I checked all car websites. The colors I will accept are Silver, White, or Modern steel. Seem to be only about 6 of the EX-L V6 Sedans with sensing within 300 miles of me. Are these websites accurate? Are the dealership websites more accurate on inventory?

    2. Since there are so few of the specific style and model 2016 that I want, I guess I can't wait until end of month? Should I just go after 2017's in a month or so? Worried dealers aren't going to deal with me since they have so few of what I want.

    3. Built an email list of 13 Honda dealers. Should I send one bcc email to all of them or do a separate email to each? Should I even email the dealers that no website shows inventory of the accord I want?

    4. Should my offer price be 3k back of invoice and settle at 2k? I am sure they are going to try to negotiate with me.

    5. What about dealing with dealer adds? One dealer only 17 miles away has 2 white ones exactly like I want but listing price is exactly 2k above MSRP. I don't mind paying for Tint but I don't want to pay $800 for paint sealant.

    6. Silver is my 1st choice. White a close 2nd. No silver ones within 300 miles of me. There is the used Silver one at honda dealership I have bought 2 cars from in the past 8 years. My buddy works for a Leasing company that has access to Manheim Auto auction sales. He said that used 2016 EX-L V6 with sensing with that many miles goes for around 22-23k at local Manheim Auction. Should I offer 23k for it and settle at 24k? Exact car I want but has 12k miles on it. Corporate fleet vehicle. CarFax is clean besides rear window replace by Honda dealer at 7k miles. It is listed at $28,200. If I get it for 24k, That would be $3500 to $4500 less than a new one at an amazing deal. Should I chase this one 1st and if it falls through, try to get a new one? Chase all of them at the same time?

Update on Inventory of EX-L V6 with Honda sensing, In White Gray or Silver

    Dallas Area - 6
    San Antonio - 2
    Houston - 2
    Austin - 0

This is based on going to each Honda Dealers website. I assume that is as accurate as I can get?

    Send separate emails to all
Email dealers with colors you want 1st to see if vehicle is on lot. .
Enclose in your email if they have your color you will buy for X- price today plus any added accessories you will buy at dealers invoice price and not MSRP price. State to all a CC deposit will be left to secure deal . You will finance car if it helps dealer lower price

See what pricing your looking at before you decide on a 2017 model.

3k below invoice on July 16th probably won't be entertained . You could try but . Id shoot for a firm $2500 below invoice if its the color you want. End of the month 3k you will have more buying leverage.

Dealers are getting better about keeping up, @mc4nam, but keeping track of inventory still has a ways to go.
  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
Thanks Brian. You don't like the idea of going after that used one for a maximum of 24k? Assuming it is 95% as good as new with 12k miles? If I can get a new one at $2500 back of invoice, that would still be $28,300.....$4300 more than used one. Not to mention I have to pay for all those dealer adds.

Also, I assume no need to email/call the dealers that do not show inventory on thier website?

Cant hurt to try for 24k . I would still send most of those emails out to dealers asking if they have your colors / model. By doing this your opening your line of communications to negotiate for a 2017 .

    Example

A Dallas dealer you email says he has no 2016's with your color . You then ask that dealer If I buy a 2017 model with no added accessories will you sell it to me for 1500 below Invoice price . Keep emails light and friendly and leave your email not a phone number to contact if they change there minds. Do this with 10 or more dealers and if in Sept/ Oct one of those dealers needs final sales incentive #'s you may get that email stating there ready to sell @X- price.

If you decide to buy the 2017 you have 2 maybe 3 months to land a good deal.

Thinking of gambling and waiting until the end of the month even though inventory is low. Is it close enough to end of the month now to start sending emails now? Any truth to what Car dealers say "End of month is only better if we haven't hit our numbers?" "Depends on how many cars we sold that day"

Is it OK to email to ask questions about the used one today just to find out about the condition? Or just go full bore on 1st email and try to get it at a super low price? Dealership is about 35 minutes away from me.

I think the end of the month comment is mostly true. Seems like there's an ebb and flow and the dealers may limit time off during the end of the month, and the last week of the month mania may just feed on itself. Who knows, the car biz is a very dark science. :)

It's okay to email now. Or even drive over and take a test drive. And you can always get quotes and then lie back in the weeds and wait until, oh, the 27th.

I think part of the trick is simply knowing what a good number is and whether that number works for you. Someone else is always going to get a better deal somewhere but all you need to worry about is whether the number is good enough for you. The other trick is being able to walk if the number doesn't work and be willing to switch dealers. Or even switch brands (I've done both, and even then I left money on the table).

And if you do get a great quote, just buy the car and don't fool around. :)
  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
Thanks @stever I have already driven them at my closest dealer and know exactly what I want. Tempting to chase that used one for a super low price. They are a Honda dealer so they have to know that 2016 closeouts lower the value of used 2016's right? I wonder if they are tempted to sit on it longer since Honda closeouts will be gone soon.

Dealers can be strange creatures - often the leftover models are no bargains. Beats me why but I've seen it over and over (my sister even paid too much for a leftover 2015 Subaru a while back).

I have received this quote from a dealer on the 2016 Accord EX-L model:

    MSRP: $29,505.00
    Discount: $4400.00
    Sale Price: $25,105.00

    Edmunds TMV is at $26,586.

Dealer adminstrative fee is $539. And then there is the tax and tag. This is in NC state.

Appreciate any comments on this quote. Any suggestions? Thanks.

@rarekat based on the education I have received the last few days from @brian125 that is basically 2k back of invoice which Brian said would be pretty good in Texas at least
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Agree, even though the fees are a bit high (typical for most places though).

    http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/what-fees-should-you-pay.html#chart

doc fee or dealer admin fees vary widely by state but in all cases it is pure dealer profit. Surprisingly, nannie states like CA and NY limit their fees to $80/$75 respectively.

i'd try to get the price down because a 3900 discount off 29500 EX-L is not great

Have a local Honda dealer offering $4000 off MSRP any new 2017, not 2016, accord in Stock.  This is just a random email. I haven't reached out to them. The model I want is MSRP of $33,730 including destination fee. So $29,730 is $1284 behind invoice of $31,014 with 0 negotiations. The dealers website just shows MSRP of the car. BUT...The fine print..."$4000 off of MSRP + dealer added equipment. Of course that information is not on website. I am sure it has $4000 dollars worth of dealer adds.

Any thoughts on if this is a good deal for a 2017 Accord Touring or should I sit on the sidelines for a couple months?

    MSRP: $35,665
    Sale price: 31,800
    OTD: around $33,700

TMV is coming in at $34,133 (for a random Bay Area CA zip). Invoice is $32,678, so yeah, sounds good to me for a 2017.
  • smittyssmittys Member Posts: 4
Thanks Stever. For reference, it's the VA, MD, DC area. Oddly, seems like the pricing I'm seeing for 2016's is pretty close ($1k or less diff) so I feel like I'm better off going 2017
  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
@smittys @stever @brian125 I am seeing the same thing in North Texas. The craziest thing is I can't get internet managers to respond to emails?
  • brian125brian125 Member Posts: 5,244

Supply and demand and not enough 17 models on lots yet. Go thru the internet managers staff or dept. then Final numbers have to go by Int / manager and maybe if they are just a glorified salesman or new to there boss.

Deals like smitty's and most good deals will be starting @800 to 1500 below invoice catching the right dealers. In some states getting invoice price on a 2017 model to a few dollars below Invoice will be a good deal this month and next.

Smitty will do better negotiating at the end of this month or trying next month when more stock is on lots . The DC, Md. VA will have the best pricing right now.

@smitty email my recommend Honda dealers in your area at months end....... you will do better.

Dealers often seem to ask (and get) "crazy" prices for last year's model. Happened to my sister...sigh.
  • smittyssmittys Member Posts: 4
@stever the info you provide in this forum is tremendously helpful. Unless you advise against it, I may have to jump a little early. I got a couple offers in the price range I mentioned earlier $33,700 and they are willing to include and install the sports grille accessory as part of the package. Definitely interested in your thoughts on the merits of the deal
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Just to verify, this is for a 2017?

If so, my bias is always to get the latest and greatest (can't convince my sister though, lol).

Life is short, go for it. :)

(And thanks for the kind words - you wouldn't believe how much I learned from other posters around here, like @brian125)
  • smittyssmittys Member Posts: 4
@stever, 2017 is correct. Apologies @brian125, I intended to include you in the previous "thanks" post and I'm curious about your thoughts on the deal since you know the dealerships in the area. Figured I'm unlikely to negotiate a much better deal on a 2017
  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
Just an FYI. Coscto buyers program shows that 2 local Dallas dealers will match or beat $28,535 on a 2016 Accord V6 EX-L with Navigation. Invoice is $30,877. That is $2342 behind invoice with no work...Of course unless the dealer tries to get silly with additions and dealer fees. The guy will not budge on the used one. He is asking $27,700 for same car with 12k miles. 24k is the most I would pay for it if I could get a new one worst case at $28,535. I think I am going to send emails saying I will pay 27k for this car.

I was planning on waiting until end of month to send emails but it has been a gloomy rainy week here in Dallas. Should I try now instead of the 29-31st of this month?
  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
@brian125 @stever Got one offer in Dallas. Didn't ask for it but when the Honda Dealer with the used one knew that it was too much he gave me a quote on the last new one in stock.

    2016 EX-L V6 with Nav and sensing - Invoice - $30,877

Dealer adds are tint, pinstripe, wheel locks, splash guards, trunk tray and paint/fabric protection.

Price offered with dealer adds included is $29,016.54.. So $1860.46 behind invoice including $400 dealer cost in adds? Or how much do we speculate those adds cost?

    Breakdown:

    Offer - $29,016.54
    Tax @ 6.25% - $1813.53
    Doc Fee - $149
    Title - ?
    License - ?

    Total - $30,979.07

OTD Total I was told is $31,220.29. That leaves $241.22 for title and license. Is that too much?

How does overall deal sound? Only $640 away from $2500 behind invoice if I don't value accessories at all.

Call selling dealership directly ask dealer to knock off 200/ 300 more dollars and you buy today on the V-6 EXL. If the answer is NO leave your number and wait 1day/ 2 days to decide if dealer don't counter .

Do the same with the 12k used Accord make a final offer then let your offer sit .

While you are speaking to both of these dealers internet dept. or Mgrs. tell each 1500 below invoice gets your business on the 17 model of your choice with no added accessories today . then move on or wait closer to months end trying for a 17 model

@mc4nam, @brian125 likes to make you work for your deals. I'm lazier and always leave money on the table. :D

Those dealer add-ons? The only one I'd be interested in would be the tint and that's questionable, depending on what the OEM tint is already. And down here where tint is really useful, you can find better quality tint jobs for less than the dealer cost (and they likely farm the job out to the tint shops anyway, but use lesser quality material).

The splash guards are kind of nice though.

Bottom line? It's good enough for me for Dallas but if you have the time and inclination, do as our friend Brian suggests.

  • mc4nammc4nam Member Posts: 60
@brian125 The used one is out. They will not even get remotely close to 24k on it. $27,500 is all they would do. They have my offer on it though. Can't pay $27,500 o a used one when I can get new for 29k or better. I may still gamble until months end on any 2016's to get better than $2500 off invoice. This dealer offered me this price without me even asking. They probably have another $1000 to play with right?

Send out those emails and offers with your target price to buy, Let dealer counter your offer . MD is a great place to buy a Accord and get a really good deal. LX models are discounted nicely in MD

A higher priced Accord in MD is still a top price in CT, NY, NJ PA, DE,

Accord w/ sensing invoices @22,804. A very good deal without going crazy negotiating is 2k to $2500 below my above invoice price . Work your deal within my numbers they are very do-able in MD. If a dealer has several Lx models go for the full 2500 below # . Follow what we been talking about on this board about negotiating a better price and getting as many dealerships involved that have your desired model .

    Good luck

Hello, I read through the last few pages here to try to get an idea of pricing on a 2016 honda accord EX-L. I was offered 27k OTD for a 2016 EX-L before i walked out and said i needed to think about. Is this a good deal or should i try to aim for lower? I don't have the break down of the numbers as i told them i wanted to think about it before they dropped the price down to 27k.

That OTD price doesn't help us determine whether that's a good price or not. You can't control taxes and fees. You can control invoice pricing and whether the dealer throws unnecessary add-ons into the deal. Make sure your price is $2000-$2500 below invoice, and make sure the dealer doesn't throw any additional items you don't need into the deal.
  • vitycentvitycent Member Posts: 4
This is the break down of the original offer.

    MSRP: 29,605 - 4,000 Discount = 25,605
    Propack EXL = 1,495
    Total Price: 27,359

    Doc Fee: 157.25
    Tax: 1693.75
    Non Tax Fees: 248.13
    Total Payoff Balance: 29,458.13

They told me the OTD would be 27k.
Edmunds shows the model in my area as 27,210 total price invoice. so if i got 2,458.13 that would be kind of close to that range right?

Invoice price is $27060 (in my area of Texas). Refuse the propack! It's all dealer inflated add-ons! Tell them to take it off or throw it in for free. I would aim for a sale price of $25000 or less + taxes & fees. Also, make sure to refuse to pay the dealer inventory tax. In my case it was about $67. Why should you pay for their inventory? Yes, that tax is negotiable - they add it on. Good luck w/ your negotiations.

I appreciate all the info! I calculated roughly that offer would have been about 25k before TTL.

    Thanks again for the help!

I'm in Texas and had a similar detailed offer as vitycent on a EX-L V6. I've yet to find a dealer in my area that doesn't have the pro pack on every car on the lot. They will negotiate off some, but at best they want $1K (in my limited experience). Has anyone in TX had luck getting one without Propack?

Dealership let me walk from their final offer of $27,800 less TTL on an EX-L V6 with Pro Pack. Just trying to see how fair their offer was.
