Recently the steering column on my 1995 XE V6 extended cab pickup began to make deep squeaking noises, not unlike a large agitated cat. The dealership recommends that I pay them to lubricate my power steering system, an expensive proposition with them. Does anyone know of a home remedy?

couple of weeks ago i was on my way down from ny and i was running about 55 or 60 when all of a sudden it just lost power.ive tried gas treatment, octane booster, carb and fuel injector cleaner, and even high test gas and it is still doing it.fuel pressure is 37 lbs and it has good spark.it is almost as if the truck has a power band up over 3k.what im experiencing is a hesitation of power.its an 89 4x4 reg cab 3.0 v6,and it also has 140,000 miles on it.can anyone give me an idea as to what is causing this?
  • bluehardbodybluehardbody Member Posts: 2
check it and see if there is a fuel pressure regulator.you might have thought of that already but just thought i would tell u that.

Does anyone know how much (approx) lift I could gain by putting stock Titan wheels on my 2004 Nissan Frontier XE 4cyl 2wd?....or is there a cheaper or equivelant route I could take to gain a little clearance?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
the lug pattern and offset to make sure you can put Titan wheels on the 04 Frontier. I know in 05 you can't interchange wheels between the Frontier/Pathy/Xtera and the Titan/Armada

I hope somebody has seen this problem before, when i start my truck, the milage goes to all 9,s,the gas and temp gauge go all the way up,the tach and speedometer wont work either, sometimes after driving,I can turn the key off and back on,then everything returns back to normal,it shows the correct miles and will work until i turn the truck off,I notice it doesnt do it has much whens its real cold outside.any help would be great.

My erratic tach has died and I wonder if the problem is with my coil wire since I see it is sort of flattened where it connects to the coil. My spark plug wires seem to be ok but this one coil wire is flattened slightly at the boot. What brand of wires did you put on your truck and where is the fuel filter located??? Any critical requirements for sp. pl. cable replacement?? My truck still has the original cables. It has 65k miles on it and it is a 1986 4x2 auto. I've looked for a chilton's book, but haven't found one yet.

This may be to late, but have you checked the center bearing on your drive shaft? The 4x4 has three shafts, counting the front. The rear shaft from the diff. joins to a second short shaft just behind the trans. The support bearing may have to much stress from your lift. If the baring is off balance, then it could be rubbing, thus the noise you here.

I am looking into getting a small pickup as a secondary vehicle and to do some light hauling. I have always liked the 90's model Nissan trucks and was wondering if anyone had any tips on common problems with these trucks. I know most vehicles with high mileage have their share of problems but I would like to know what I may be getting myself into before I buy one. Any tips on this will be greatly appreciated.

A local U.S. newspaper is looking to interview buyers who recently purchased a half-ton truck and understand what factors you considered before making your purchase. If you are interested in being interviewed, please send an email to ctalati@edmunds.com no later than Tuesday, February 6, 2007 containing your daytime contact information.

I have a 1996 Nissan 4x4 D21 Pickup and the charging system has suddenly quit working. It 'appears' that it has a separate voltage regulator from the alternator (and the alternator's a bear to get at from the top). Can anyone give me any pointers in identifying which one is causing the problem before I just start swapping parts? I checked and charged the battery completely after a hydrometer test showed it needed a re-charge (and it was about dead). Charging it for several hours has put a good charge back into it but upon starting it, the gauge indicates that it's not charging.

    Thanks for any help,

    John

    Hi,

I have a 95 XE-V6 4x4 with 180K miles on it. The steering has recently become sloppy, and the truck bounces when going over bumps. How do I know if the shocks need replacing, or the struts, or the ball-joints? Also, what are some good brands to look into? Other than this problem, a new battery, and a couple sets of brakes, this truck has been amazing. I have owned it since it had 35K miles on it, and it runs great.

    Thanks.

    Check for blown fuses
  • 1996nissanpick1996nissanpick Member Posts: 2
all the fuses are fine and i still have no clue on what happened
  • mick14mick14 Member Posts: 30
Do you have any secondary fuses? You might want to check them as well as alternator output.......

My truck (2000 Frontier 4x4) was fine yesterday- today fuel guage is well above F, speedometer and tach do not work, temp guage shows way above H, and odometer now reads 999,999. Any clues?? I've checked what I know to check.

I know your exact problem, you look at your truck, and it says "Nissan" on the back; Actually, it sounds like the body control module, or computer, which gets pricy to repair and maybe a symptom of a greater problem, same thing happened to me I replaced the BCM corrected the problem, however, than replaced it again, than replaced again ... than I had the engine harness replaced. Chasing electrical issues can get pricy and time consuming.
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
As far as the shocks/struts go, push down hard on each corner of the truck several times and try to get the body to bounce. If the truck continues to oscillate up and down, your shocks probably need replacing. They stabilize the ride and without them it's just your springs controlling things. I don't know much about the other items, other than to visually inspect them. Good luck.

2.4 motor, i want to buy it but it wont start plenty of fuel coming out of hose going to injectors. if you put gas into throttle body runs good, the guy who has it changed the injectors, still nothiung. how hard should gas be coming out of the hose going to throttle body.

I have been looking for some HP gains as well. (`95 PU 2WD 2.4 5 sp.) I found remapped ECUs available claiming 15-30% gains, but sort of "spendy", ~$300 & you must send in your ECU. Cold air intakes are available as well, but I just went with a K&N and new plugs to start with. In keeping with the spirit of the previous notices, I will not post the manufacturers or mention specific names unless it's allowed...

I would also like to see a dyno chart of the 2.4 (preferably a `95 `tho any F.I. 2.4 would do). Could someone post a link or at least the published HP/torque specs?

    Thanx,
    Oz

having a new distributor cap is very essential in every engine and it should be checked regularly, with Nissan distributor cap it enables your engine to improve fuel economy with less waste and consumption of fuel to power up ignition.
  • oz666oz666 Member Posts: 2
    Ryan,
Your link is a bit suspect as it lists THE SAME PART NUMBER for the distributor cap for 4 cyl. and 6 cyl. engines. (I used `95 PU XE)

I have ignition challenges with my 86.5 Nissan King Cab PU with about 175,000 miles. On rainy, wet mornings, the engine seems to misfire with only about half the plugs seeming to fire. The exhaust smells of raw gas and if I turn the engine off, I have to go through the process of starting a flooded engine. After the initial startup, it starts and runs fine the rest of the day. So far I’ve checked the plugs and coils, replaced the ignition wires, distributor and cap (including the O ring). I’ve even had it to the Nissan dealership and after $100 worth of diagnostics – am still having the problem. Only on wet days. Temporary Solution: I moved my daughter’s car out and park my truck in the garage at night. Any experience and/or suggestions? Thanks!
  • ryanceyryancey Member Posts: 42
Have you tried cleaning/replacing/adjusting the carburetor.
  • plantpotterplantpotter Member Posts: 9
Thank you for your response. Checking the fuel supply & delivery system was 'supposedly' part of the diagnostics conducted by the Nissan dealership and their 'opinion' was that the issue was electrical in nature. But since the problem didn't occur while the vehicle was in their posession - their proposal was to begin replacing the 'most likely' components. I couldn't afford that approach. Have you had a similar experience that would point to the fuel delivery system rather than something electrical in nature? In any case, thanks again for your response.

I have a similar problem. my truck idles fine, but around 1700rpm it starts to hesitate, and continues to hesitate until i pass 2000rpm. also if i am driving and drop below 2000rpm, it chokes off the gas for a second. its really strange. i cannot figure out what it is. i have replaced the fuel filter, and fuel pump, and the problem still exists. if anyone has an idea please let me know.
  • plantpotterplantpotter Member Posts: 9
My truck is much older (86.5) and this may not apply, but I had a very similar problem several years ago that even the Nissan technicians had difficulty diagnosing initially. Eventually they replaced the throttle position sensor and throttle switch and the O2 sensor. Problem solved!

I have a 97 Nissan 4 w/d kingcab 5 speed. My speedometor quite working and now I am having massive problems. I can be going down the road and all the sudden the truck will pick up in speed on its own and I have to hit the brakes. Other times I am pressing the gas peddle and I feel nothing behind it and it wants to stall out. I have black smoke coming out my tail pipe and gas in my oil. Had spark plugs and o2 sensor changed yesterday and it didn't help a bit. vehicle only has 60,000 miles on it. I live in a small town and can't find anybody to work on this nissan. the closest dealership is approx an hour or so away. It would never make it that far. Have a mechanic that said if I could get some idea of what the problem is he could probably work on that but he has no machine to check a foreign vehicle with.
The truck sounds rough when the black smoke comes out and acts like it wants to stall out. When pushing clutch in at a stop sign I have to keep reving it up and when I go to pull out don't know if it is going to stall out or not. Kinda scary driving but I need to get to work. Tacometer when driving at times will be normal then all the sudden drop to 0. Any suggestions you can give me with what you have been going thru with your truck
  • plantpotterplantpotter Member Posts: 9
Wow...sounds like you may have a couple of issues that may or may not be related. If the black smoke smells of raw fuel, it sounds as if you have some plugs not firing and the engine flooding. That may also be contributing to the fuel in the oil. I would have the coils and relays checked. It is my understanding from a Nissan technician that the coils function independently of one another and one is specifically active in acceleration. There is also some sort of relay/controller on the coils that can sometimes malfunction. At only 60,000, I wouldn't expect the distributor or rotor to be worn to the point of causing the problem you describe - but they could be defective or dirty. As for the speedometer, tac and the 'posessed' acceleration - I have no idea but it sounds electrical or processor related. Sorry! I relate to the 'small town' mechanic challenge.

I had a 2004 Titan that had the front brake issue that many of us went through. The dealer replaced everything and couldn't have been nicer about it. Unfortunetly I totalled that truck, but I liked it so much that I bought a used 2005 with very low miles. It is now experiencing the same thing as the 2004 (it has 15,000 miles on it), but the dealer is telling me that the 05 isn't covered like the 04 was. Are they feeding me a line of bull? The entire front end shakes under moderate braking (it is almost uncontrollable under heavy braking). Shouldn't this be a no-brainer warranty issue. Anybody else have this problem with their 2005? The Titan is still the only truck I would buy, but warped rotors just don't cut it. Thanks.
  • ryanceyryancey Member Posts: 42
You should salvage the rotors from your totaled titan.
  • dave140dave140 Member Posts: 4
Just found your blog concerning your nissan. I have a 97SE 4x4 king cab pickup 5 speed. It has been acting real weird. Can you tell me how your truck was acting? I have replaced so many things this truck is breaking me. I was now just told to replace the Max Air Flow Sensor which costs 457.00 that is without labor. Where is the Max Air Flow Sensor located on this vehicle? Need help with this A.S.A.P. can't drive it no more as I have gas in my oil too. Flooding out.Don't want to have to take a loan out if I don't need too if you know what I mean. Please email me. Thanks.
  • asaasa Member Posts: 359
This wasn't adressed to me, but the MAF is usually in the airbox (fresh intake air) and ought to be a cinch to access. If you replace it, treat it like fine china and touch only the exterior of the part.

But if you have gas in your oil, you've got larger problems with greater priority. What's the cause?
  • dave140dave140 Member Posts: 4
Don't know what the cause of any of these problems are. We just called to see how much it would be to tow it to the closest garage that has a machine to put it on. We have to have it towed 30 mi. one way. The garage is a toyota dealer but they said their machine will work on the Nissan. The closes Nissan is approx. 60 + miles away and we can't afford to have it towed that far.
It starts but it wants to choke up and hesitates when driving then it gets to where you can't even feel any pressure behind the gas pedal and wants to stall out while driving it. I am desperate to get this thing running right. Can't afford another vehicle right now. Can't afford to put much more money in this either. Don't know what more to do. Right now I am having to catch rides to work. There is no one to car pool with as there are only 3 of us at work and they live in different directions than me. There isn't even any public transportation in my area. (NO Taxi's etc.) But thatns for your reply. If you know of anyone else with tis problem have them email me too.

    1. ROOF RACK
