maintainence light comes on at 5, 10, 15k etc. etc.so I will change every 5K, also use Mobil 1 (5W, of course) - should cost about $4.00/quart at your local Walmart/Autozone/Costco or whoever. Instructions of resetting the light is in your manual.

I called Toyota and talked to a tech there, her said that the 05 engine was tested without the power steering pump, the 06 was tested with the pump installed.
I think most of the Toyota's and Lexus's has been reduced by 12 HP because of this.
That is what Toyota told me.
  • n0v8orn0v8or Member Posts: 169
What you were told is probably literally true, but only a part of the reason. Can you really accept that it takes the combined force of 12 horses to turn your steering wheel? Having driven cars without power steering as a 125 pound teen-ager, I can attest that even 1HP would be an overkill for this task.

No doubt there are a combination of factors that led to the revised HP ratings under the new SAE guidelines, such as:
    type of fuel used (octane);
    whether A/C compressor, alternator, water pump, and power steering pump are connected or not, and loaded or not;
engine calibration optimized for each vehicle tested, or not.

And by the way, there is another bum design when using the Audio screen, but we can make that the subject of another rant!!!

Uh oh, what's wrong with the design of it?

    Bump!

I thought one of the advantages of synthetic oil was that it lasted much longer then conventional oil? I remember when Mobil 1 first came out that you would change the filter as the car manufacturer recommended but not the oil for at least 2-3 filter changes. Has this changed?
  • mstemmstem Member Posts: 113
Sorry, I forgot to respond to your earlier request!

When you are in "Audio" mode, and you are tuned to a regular FM station, many times certain information about the station, the song being currently played, etc is displayed on the screen. (I think a lot has to do with the fact that only some stations support this) Anyway, as soon as you start to move the large display area marked "TEXT" on the LCD-display screen goes to a standard screen that advise you "... for safety reason, no song information is displayed while moving..." blah blah blah. Then, when you come to a stop, the song information re appears. Then the process repeats itself over and over.

Here's the rub: if you have the optional Toyota factory installed or factory aftermarket XM satellite radio, the display screen behaves a little differently. All of the above mentioned safety warning goes out the window, and the song and artist information now appears in the "TEXT" window. Doesn't make any difference whether you are mobile or stationary, it's there! And it stays there... So why, when the same designers worked this out, is it too dangerous to display one and not the other? Pretty inconsistent.

The final Audio rub: when using XM radio, it only displays the first ten (10) characters of the Artist and Song Name, even though the display is at least forty (40) characters wide... A full three-fourths of the window is wasted. Don't the people who design this stuff actually use it?

Having said all of that, I still luv my new Avalon. It just gets irritating that some of this small stuff wasn't addressed. I have found myself wishing I could connect my laptop to some kind of interface and program this thing the way it ought to be... :confuse:

Thanks for the replies. I'll look at these. I saw some on e-bay. They seemed reasonably priced compared to the mfg site. When I purchase one, I'll let you all know. ;)
  • captain2captain2 Member Posts: 3,971
actually Mobil has a grade of synthetic that they claim lasts 15000 miles. Synthetic oils do not break down with heat (and maintain correct vicosity in the cold) compared with conventional oils - so yes they do last longer, and no it is not usually necessary to change the filter every time either. The old 3000 mile oil/filter change intervals are overkill unless we drive in extreme conditions - but, this myth continues thanks to the folks that generally do the work. So I grew up doing this at 3000, have now changed to 5 per Toyota's maintanence schedule - in both cases probably a little too often especially using the high rent oil.

But the regular display doesn't even have the text displaying capabilities..right?

I just had the cover replaced on my radio and it appears that the mechanical latch is different from the original. The tech. said that they redesign the door latch. So, for those of you that purchased the early version of Avalons check with your dealer to get your door replaced. I think there is a S.B. out there on radio cover.
Also, we have discussed adding padding to the front seats on my LTD. Has any one done this and if so, where did you add the cushion?

Do you know if Toyota has come up with any solution to the defective rear spoiler attachment method?. My 2nd spoiler gasket has started to bubble up around the sides of the spoiler again and I don't want them to keep putting it back the same way, hoping I'll go away. Any solution to yours yet. thanks,

I'm going to be purchasing an Avalon in Jan. '06 when my Aurora comes off lease but have been reading this forum for a while. My wife & I just completed a 4000 mile trip from the Cleveland, Ohio area thru St. Paul, MN to visit out son & his wife all the way to Yellowstone & back. Prior to the trip I purchased a Magellan Roadmate 300 thru Costco for about $500.. The unit performed great. I didn't go for the top of the line madel, choosing tho purchase one that uses the SD cards. These cover a wide swath of states per card. My wife isn't a techie, but admitted after the first day of the 2 week trip that my "toy" was a great help & easy to use. One time on Cheyenne, WY we could not get back to the freeway the way we came. The unit directed us out & back on I-80. It is portable, so we move it from car to car. It is a great help. Can't see spending $2000 on a built in system !!

    Hi havalongavalon!!
Good to see you are still around and enjoying your new Avalon. We are also enjoying our new Avalon. Just yesterday I took it in to correct a loose front right pillar cover. They must have forgotten to put all the required clips in to hold it in place. I have had a busy summer so haven't had time to do much research on nav systems, other than the ones I looked at earlier. I did notice that Canadian Tire have a sale on a larger ( 7" screen ) nav system made by macvision. I tried to find some reviews on this system but found only one which was not very good. The writer said that it performed poorly and he returned it. It is priced at $399.00. I would like to look at it in the store and talk to someone who has used one.
As I am going through the so called male menopause I decided to look for a sporty car and had decided on a newer edition of the Thunderbird. About a month ago I purchased a 2002 T-Bird which had only 570 KM on it. Paid only a fraction of the new price. A real fun car and great to drive. Has the removable hardtop with the porthole windows. So I have to wait a while before I buy any more toys.
I didn't catch the CTV news, but it shows our former Govenor General has a lot of class. I haven't seen very many new Avalons here in the Kelowna area at all.
I heard something about the new car smell and the gasses that a new vehicle gives off for a while, and I notice how the inside of the windows get smoky after a short time. I don't even smoke. Someone mentioned that there is a new glass cleaner that works great to clean car windows, and I believe that it is called invisible glass. I still intend to purchase a nav system, but as there are so many new ones coming out and the prices are dropping, I will just use the paper maps for a while until I decide on which system to buy.
Take care and let me know if you find any good nav systems or reviews.

In my neck of the woods (Midwest), we have had a few recent incidents of car jackings. Most of these incidents have been in affluent neighborhoods where they were least expecting it. I was wondering about getting a GPS tracking system for the LTD since it has a push button starting system. My thinking is, if approached, give up the car (Of course). Once they turn off the ignition and there is no way to turn it back on, my car will sit. But where? With this tracking system, at least I can notify the law as to the whereabouts. Am I paranoid? Any ideas? Please don't bash me for this line of thinking.

Sounds like the solution would be a Lojack system.

Bummer . I checked with Lojack and it is not available in my area (Mo).

    Hello Mackabee --

Is there any update on the rumor that the 2007 avalon may be out in January or February of 2006?

I just purchased a 2005 Avalon Ltd. and need help...dealer does not have a clue.

Is there a bracket for this car? Or do you mount it flush to the paint? We are moving from FL. to IL. and will need to install a front plate.

    Thanks

Does anyone know if this also applies to the door of the tape player (I don't have the NAV system).

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and did not get a direct reply. I have seen one set of pictues on the forum that seemed to show a bracket. It was black, but shown on a black car. The ideal would be a bracket that is color matched like the aftermarket door guards I have seen discussed.

Can someone from a front tag state please help us out? :confuse:
  • msavalonmsavalon Member Posts: 49
I live in Mo, which requires a front plate. I went to the dealership service dept and they gave me the option of having my plate drilled directly into the bumper as is or buying a plate for $14. I located my salesman and asked why the car didn't come with a front bracket in a state that requires front plates and he didn't know.He went inside and came back with the same black plastic bracket (black car) that came on the back of the car. The service dept installed it at no charge. Not fancy, but got the job done. :shades:
  • n0v8orn0v8or Member Posts: 169
I live in New England. A local home & auto store chain sells a sturdy plastic universal bracket for $4. It worked fine for me. The dealer had screwed the front plate directly to the bumper cover.

In Ontario Canada, we are required to install a front license plate, My 06 Avalon came with a black mounting bracket pre-drilled in the front bumper. Photo in link below not that clear but you get the idea.

I have been told it may take up to 3 months to get a new Avalon Limited. The color I want is Silver Pine Mica. I was told that there are no limited scheduled for production in this color for the next 3 months. Is this possible. Also, do larger dealers get preference when ordering a car from the factory?

Trust me, the wait for Silver Pine Mica is well worth it! :D

I know the amout of Limited models is in short supply. My friend owns a large Toyota dealer so my experience is not typical, he was able to help a lot. I have noticed that his supply of Limited models is getting better. I think a lot depends on how many dealers sell and that affects their allocation. Not sure if I understand this; how do you increase your sales of certain models if you don't have them to begin with?

Now why would they introduce the 2007 in January 2006. If they aren't making a drastic model makeover, why come out almost a year early with the 07. The only time I see that happening with cars is if they come out with a totally redesigned car. So don't count on it.

PS: I may be buying a black 2002 300M Special today so I will probably be putting off a purchase of an Avalon anytime soon. I decided to go with handling and style over cushiness. The 300 Special has most of the toys that the Avalon has and I'm saving over 20G compared to a Limited Av.

The Av is a bit more refined than the M and gives a quieter ride. It's a tradeoff with the M--great seats, great handling, lots of room and comforts, but louder noise level and harsher ride.

I would like to see Toyota address all the issues mentioned here, especially the tranny issue. I may be interested in the Av in 2007.

I don't know where you guys are from but in my neck of the woods, eastern Iowa, there are more Limiteds on dealer lots than anything else. The XLs, and XLSs fly off the lots as fast as they come in and it seems like the Limiteds and Tourings are plentiful and not as much in demand here. I was lucky to nab my '06 XL when I did. I know if I was looking for a car with the options and price class of an Avalon Limited, I'd be shopping at the Lexus dealer first. A few more bucks will buy you better warranty, service, features and overall refinement.

If only it were "... a few more bucks..." :) I did shop Lexus, as that has always been my dream car. Guess it will have to wait and I can dream some more. Here is how I saw it: the "little" Lexus is nothing more than a high-end Camry. The real Lexus, the LS430, is the car I wanted. I shopped them, with the nice options you are looking at a sticker of just about $65K. My Avalon Limited, with every option I could cram on it, stickered for just a little below $40K. Many folks, including some of the car magzines, consider the Avy Limited to be ninety-some per cent of a Lexus LS430. That's how I justify a loaded Limited, I was willing to settle for ninety-some per cent of my dream car. Saving $25K was real sweet... Your mileage may vary, this just works for me right now. ;)

i have bolted my front plate to the bumper without a mounting bracket. it looks far better than having a large black bracket on the front of your bumper. it is of course a personal preference.

Looks just fine on a Black Car :D

My wife's Avalon LTD. Blizzard/Charcoal will be built on 10/3. The Limited models are a little harder to get right now, as demand has been strong. I'm sure Toyota will respond with a supply to meet demand. We own a company which is a supplier to Toyota facilities. I am inside the TMMK (Toyota Kentucky) plant often, as we are located in Lexington, KY., so I might even get to see her car being build next week. Our company is a supplier of automation and robotics at Toyota plants. These cars are truly a great automobile, built by some of the best people, at the finest facilities in the world. Yea, I'm a bit pro-Toyota, but I have been in allot of manufacturing plants, and Toyota's factories, and the parts supplier's plants are top notch. Toyota builds agreat product, and I am looking forward to our 2nd Avalon.

Msavalon, On my car the dealer just drilled 2 holes in the bumper for the plate. Can you tell if the factory front plate bracket would use the same holes my plate now uses or would I end up with additional holes in my bumper if I wanted to use the bracket? I think it might give it a more finished look, plus I don't like the idea of the metal plate rubbing on the painted bumper. Thanks.
  • jayvisjayvis Member Posts: 76
No disrespect intended mstem, but I have to question your reasoning. Comparing an Avalon to an LS430 is like comparing a 3 series BMW to a Mitsubishi Eclipse unless you are only concerned with cushy creature comforts, which the LS430 is leaps and bounds ahead of the Avalon. But, for the added asking price, it should be. Did you consider the new Lexus GS300? It's in the same price territory as the Av Ltd, has all and more of the glitzy options you can get in the Ltd. The Ltd probably has more interior room and 23 more horses under the hood but the GS300 handles so much better, still has a comfortable ride, super cabin isolation, and has the sexier Lexus look. That's the piece I'd be looking at in the $40k ball park.

Toyota Canada delivers to Alberta (no front plate required) a black mounting bracket in the trunk of every new Avalon, and probably every other Toyota sold here.

I do not know why or if the 2007 will be introduced in January '06. In message # 7214 on 7/5/05 Mackabee reported that the 2006 would be introduced in Aug '05 and that there were strong rumors that the 2007 would be out in Jan / Feb '06. So --- since I will be in the market for an avalon soon, I wanted to clarify. Not my rumor!

My reluctance to move ahead with a purchase now is directly related to the number of problems reported on the product via this forum.

However, just to speculate, if Toyota wanted to demarcate ' significant fixes' (reference to problems noted in the forum) to the product, labeling the product 2007 has lots of advantages, e.g. customers would see 2007 as the start of the new improved product. Just musing.

I just picked up my 2006 Blue Mirage Metallic XLS from Classic Toyota in Waukegan, IL. They haven't had too many Avalons and since I wanted a specific color, it took three weeks. Dealer prep was good.

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but exactly what benefits do I get with synthetic oil? My old dealer (I just moved from VA to CA) offered Mobile 1 as an alternative for some added price, but I wasn't sure whether I should use that instead of traditional oil.

    Hi hoop43,

You said earlier that you are ex QA manager (hi-tech) and a researcher, so surely you will agree that with increasing technological complexity there is a greater (not lower) risk of encountering problems. This is true not only for the car industry but with life-saving medical devices, too. The FDA recently reported that 4,225 cardiac defibrillators had failed between 2000 and 2003, about as many as those that failed in the previous 10 years. The increase in malfunctions may be a result of "increased complexity of these devices, manufacturing challenges posed by device complexity, or increased reporting by physicians", according to the FDA. The FDA said on its Web site that the higher percentage of failures may be a result of design changes that made the devices smaller -- they are now the size of a stopwatch -- while their computer memory was increased and their power maintained. Here is a link:

    link title

Like pacemakers, new cars have many more features and are far more complex now than 20 or 10 years back. This is true for all car makes and models. The severity of the problems reported by new Avalon owners in this forum, pales in comparison to problems affecting other new cars. The frequency of problems reported by Avalon owners is very hard to gauge from these postings, but may be increasing because of the easy availability of these forums. We don't hear as much from owners who don't have the same problems. This is where stats compiled by Consumer Reports are useful; but it takes a long time to build up their database.

In the meantime, Toyota has a well-deserved leading reputation for high reliability, that I think they are interested in keeping. So if their vehicles show real flaws, they fix these quickly. They won't just wait until the next model year.

I too had debated whether to buy one of the first 2005 Avalons, or maybe better wait for the 2006 model year. Today, 7 months later, I remain really pleased that I bought mine when I did. My "problems" have been few and truly minor, my satisfactions have far outweighed the risks I took in being an early adopter.

And, if you are going to buy a new car someday, what better choice will you have later, really? The 2007's may come with newly introduced, advanced features... together with their own set of potential new problems. Or, as the recent trends suggest, with greater chance of problems...

    Best wishes,

    havalongavalon

    Hi Gladiator99,

Congrats on your 02 T-Bird! Sounds like great fun and a great deal too. I'm starting to look for an additional car, since my teen kids will be driving soon; I bet they'd really go for a T-Bird... For now they are chauffeured everywhere in the Avalon and I may start to call them Governor and General, in honour of Adrienne...

To confirm, Canadian Tire carries Invisible Glass. It removes the haze really well but make sure to keep the car doors open while you apply it, as it is likely toxic (far more so than the natural new-car scent may be).

    Best regards,

    havalongavalon

One of the problems of any oil is vicosity (thickness) breakdown when hot and conversely the oil thickening so much in the cold that lubricating properties are compromised on startup. These problems are aggravated by mfgr. recommendations that we now use things like the lighterr 5W oil (less viscosity). Simply put, synthetic oils are superior in maintaining the correct vicosity thru a wider temperature range and should keep the engine lubricated correctly especially in the lower oil weights. The synthetics have improved significantly in the last several years and most of the major mfgrs. now have synthetics as good as Mobil 1 is. Unfortunately the stuff is 2 to 3 times the cost.

I have about 3,500 miles on my Avalon LTD. I notice when I rev the engine or accelerate quickly, soon afterwards a rotten egg smell fills the car. Is this part of breaking in the engine or should I take it in to get the car serviced?
  • captain2captain2 Member Posts: 3,971
Agreed, but keeping it a little closer to home - the BMWs and MBs have been rightfully downrated recently for repair frequencies and repair costs. Anybody who has ever owned one will likely tell you, however, that this was the best driving and best engineered car they ever owned. Probably true and as it should be for the prices they charge. The fact is that they are so complicated that sooner or later something must break! The simple Corolla will always be a more reliable car than the Av simply because there is less to go wrong. First year issue teething problems are well documented and common to all mfgrs. - the 2006/2007 Avs should have fewer problems than the 05's - Toyota is a quality mfgr., however and may be immune to some (but not all) of these problems. Jury is still out on this one - been lucky with my '05 - hasn't been back to the dealer except for that steering recall.

I apologize I thought the Avalon was like other GEN 3 navigation systems. After reviewing the owners manual I see they have omitted this feature.

Is there any other items that are troublesome?
  • geoshillgeoshill Member Posts: 27
    Dear easyrider
The repair dealers will love you . I had 3 Chrysler products that gave me much trouble and cost me dearly, curently $100/hr. My '66 Chrysler Imperial , power brake failure, tranny failure, rear axle failure, speedometer failure and burned valve. My '72 dodge Dart total inginion failure at 700 miles in front of NIH Maryland. For some reason it used to dump large quantites of tranny oil on the ground on hot days. Then one cylider pumped oil till I got rid of the car. Then for the dodge 440 engine in my motor home I'd write a book about it. Beware fo poor quality.

My '97 XLS has never been in a shop for repairs yet!!
  • billygbillyg Member Posts: 29
    Hey navguy1

No apology necessary. I see this forum as a place to share thoughts and not feed egos. There is no right or wrong.

My problem is that I do not consider the NAV user friendly. For those who like to tinker or who often travel to unfamiliar territory it is OK, but it's interaction with audio and temperature controls could be improved.

I just want to have the option to choose my defaults and find that, the next time I jump in the car to take a local trip, my defaults are still there displayed and waiting. No buttons to push.

    Have a great day. :)
