Bought a 2005 XC90 V8 in July. Smooth ride, runs great, and has surprisingly good gas milage for a V8 (has averaged 20mpg over the past 6,000 miles). My only complaint is a noisy enigine compartment.
When I am in the car, there is no unusually loud engin noise. However, when I stand outside the car as my wife turns on the car and drives away (or at idle), it sounds like an old washing machine about to fly away. Could also say its like a lawnmower (not quite that loud, but loud). By comparison, a friend's Acura MDX makes almost no noise at idle.
This is my first Volvo and first European car. Is this normal? Anyone?
I was also surprised to hear from the dealer that the car needs new brake pads now. Has anyone else needed new brake pads at 15k miles? My previous car went thru brake pads about every 30-40k miles.
I'm not particularly happy with the car--it has left me walking twice in one day, both times returning from the service department. That, however, may say more about my dealer's service department than the car.
I have a 2004 XC90 with 48,000 miles on it. No major problems yet, but the dealer asked if I wanted to purchase the extended warranty b/f mine runs out. What are your thoughts/experiences on this? Thanks alot.
Mike
in my experience and from what i have seen, major stuff does not break on volvos (or most cars) until after 100k or 5 years. after the longest available extended warranties expire. probably no 'coincidence' there if you know what i mean, folks! obviously the math says that the extended warranties are a "profit-center" for those who sell them - because in the long run they are designed to make $ for the insurance company not for us drivers. also note that most manufacturers will sell you an extended warranty any time before the car is a year old or hits 12k miles. they might not offer you the same price after a year, but they *are* always able to offer large discounts on the warranty pricing, there's lots of 'padding' in the prices.

This car has some glitch which burns up the fuel pump. It doesn't seem very common, but sporadic with certain cars. How can anyone trust their wife or kids to drive this car on trips or at night?
No, I will not accept this particular car back and I have some very good attorney friends who will back me up on this. And NO, this car never ran out of gas. I have driven over 2 million miles and never had a fuel pump go out on me, much less twice in 6 weeks.
if i thought any car was unsafe for my wife/kids, or for me,
i'd trade it in a heartbeat and chalk it up to experience, probably avoiding that brand forever. i doubt i'd be a whiner about it, trying to get lemon-law buyback due to a couple of fuel pump failures, but hey, do what you gotta do - whatever you judge best for your fam!
if you win a lemon law thing or get volvo to do "buy-back" due to two fuel pump failures i will be surprised and will eat a used xc90 floor mat for my midday meal.
ttfn!
requiring tow truck. this started at 900mls. to make a long story short now at 12,000 miles in the shop most of the time. Volvo has paid off the loan and returning most of the money we paid on the loan. Look up Lemon Laws on the internet, consumer legal svc will help you at no cost. :lemon:

she said it is only low on gas. On the way to the gas station the dash computer read transmission service' or something like that. This suv had only 83 mls on it. We limped back to the dealer and drove another v8 xc90 (on 65 mls on ado). Well the steering was vibration like a wild horse. The sales person said it is due to the road, so, I gave her the car to drive. To sum, she agreed and I left not buying the car and happy that this occurred before I bought the suv.
I know it's a minor thing, but is this what I have to look forward to?
All good, but now there is an intermittent noise coming from the engine. I noticed the noise yesterday and thought it was related to the a/c being on. Today, my husband drove it and heard the noise, it's louder today.
I have never had problems like this with a brand new car. :confuse: To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. I have had the truck for 11 days and it's going back in the shop for the second time.
:P
Even though the dealer's service advisor has been courteous on every occasion I took my car in (for this and other problems), their technicians seem incompetent or indifferent or both.
I bought this car because of safety and styling. We love the car. Sure, we took it in for a few things here and there. In fact, the company STILL does not believe me that the interior lights flicker when I turn them on. For some reason they will not do it for them. Oh well.
We have over 50k miles on it and going strong. Hopefully, now that the warranty is out, it will not dissapoint us. We would buy another Volvo in a heartbeat.
My RX-8 on the other hand....NEVER buying Mazda again because of their poor customer service and workmanship on the 8.

Anyone experiencing these issues this winter? Our radio, which the dealership claimed to have fixed with a "software upgrade" is again acting strangely on very cold mornings.
Our 2005 XC90 2.5T AWD has had 12,000 trouble-free miles. However, the tread on its tires, Pirelli Scorpion Zero 235/65R17, does not look like going to pass the 15k miles mark. I wonder if this is normal wear for this vehicle and this model of tires? Any idea on what the mileage other owners out there got from their tires? Are there better alternatives brand/model tires when it is time to replace the tires? Any input/suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately those were the only two brands that make an 18" XC 90 tire. I bought the Michelins and fully expect to have to replace them before the car hits 60,000 miles.
Thanks for the information. It would be great if Volvo would replace them free of charge. I will have to make sure to go in before 15k miles. I'd assume you got yours replaced. Do you have to do it through the original dealer where you bought the vehicle, or can any Volvo dealer utilize that program for you? Thanks again.
The radio is still the worst in any car I have ever owned.
Apparently Volvo has a software up date for the radio and some of the other computer on board. Any one aware of this.
