If you're willing to put Blizzaks on in the winter, then you will probably be ok, as long as the roads are at least moderately plowed. I have a rear drive LS430, and with Blizzaks I'm able to get by pretty well. This also allows you to use some UHP tires in the summer months that handle much better than most AS tires. I wouldn't recommend trying to get away with just AS tires in winter on the RWD car though. On the other hand, the M35x with AS tires shouldnt have any problems.

Giving up such a great car as the M35 for frankly 3rd rate Swedish front drivers is definitely NOT worth it though just for some snow.

The "fix" accomplished nothing. My clanging sounds always occur and probably occurs at least 5 times during the next 30 minutes or more. The service guy said it was "normal" which I translated into he doesn't know how to fix it.

In a few weeks I'm going to meet with the owner of the Infiniti dealership - he has been quite friendly with me and told me if I needed anything done to contact him direct.

I test drove three other M35s and didn't hear the sound on any of them. No service rep ever heard the noise and few have complained on this board so it is definitely not "normal". I have to believe that if others heard this sound they would have complained to their dealer but that hasn't been the case.

Any other thoughts on how the RWD will handle in snow... live in pittsburgh. I think I am going to make the deal today. Thanks for your help.

Unless a car is designed to shake, rattle, and roll ... or shimmy ~ 60 mph as previously posted here ... there's something wrong and I'd be all over the dealership to make it right ASAP. Buying a used car without a warranty leaves you with no redress. But brand new right off the floor? Even a Yugo shouldn't do these things brand new. Make them dread seeing you pull into the service department ... the issue will be resolved immediately. The "flat spot" hypothesis mentioned a couple weeks ago in response to one post is, IMO, incorrect. Flat spots were an issue in the 50's and 60' mostly with nylon (even more than rayon) bias ply tires. Once we went to radials and away from nylon that ceased to exist.

How can you say Umbria grey is basic silver???? The Diamond graphite is much more silver! It's a dakr silver, slmost grey. The Umbria is more brownish-gold-green. Most unique of all of the colors in the M series.
  • prophetprophet Member Posts: 72
I'm taking mine in Thursday & will let you know how it turns out. With +3,000 miles on my M35, Infiniti's hit a home run with this one. Both fast & fun to drive.
  • msu79gt82msu79gt82 Member Posts: 541
Yea I agree; I earlier said the Umbria Grey has gold in it (and it does), but I saw one again today and it does have a touch of green as well. My FX35 is Diamond Graphite and I'd say a workable description is metallic gray. The Liquid Platinum is merely a fancy name for silver.

Do the ventilated/cooled seats provide ventilation to the seat back or just the seat bottom?

    Thanks.
  • docnukemdocnukem Member Posts: 485
I'm pretty certain (based on my own experience) that it is just the seat bottom. But the cooling feature works very well.
  • empty1empty1 Member Posts: 109
apint - curious what you got an how you did at Holman the suggested dealer you gave me in NJ.
  • johnhwjohnhw Member Posts: 111
Mine just cools the seat cushion of the front seat. There is one control for each seat which can be warm or cool air. The air blows through seat bottom cushion for certain, I have not noticed any air flow from the back of the front seat.
  • johnhwjohnhw Member Posts: 111
Correction, the air does flow out of the front seat backs not just the seat bottom. It is a very nice feature in Houston during the summer days like today

I have a couple of questions for any current M owners out there.

    - How big is the trunk? Am I wasting my time on this car if I need to drop 2-3 golf bags into it every weekend?
    - How is the quality of the paint? I currently drive a Nissan Murano and the paint on this car chips like crazy... I have as many spots of missing paint on it in 2 years as I did with 5 on my previous car! Wanted to see if Nissan uses the same paint technique on all of their vehicles.
    - Is there an Aux. input on any of the radio options? I do not see one listed but I wanted to ask just in case... I'd love to plug my iPod directly into that 5.1 system!

Thanks for any answers you can provide!
  • pete_l_ppete_l_p Member Posts: 322
The 5.1 system comes with DVD audio, and an Aux input, into which you can directly plug your iPod.

The Aux input is accessible through a little door which is on the outside rear of the the center console (facing the rear passengers). The aux input uses 3 RCA phono tips. (Audio Left and Right, and a video input as well.) You can get a cheap adapter at radio shack with a mini stereo plug (1/8th inch) on one end and two RCA males on the other end, and it will sound great.

Just hauled 3 big golf bags, along with one 6'4, 295# guy and a couple of other sizeable dudes in my M35x. Everyone and everything was comfortable.

Don't know about your paint issue.

On the audio, I think you have to have the DVD system (most expensive) to hook up the iPod directly.
  • sjcbillsjcbill Member Posts: 82
The trunk is smaller if you get the full size spare tire. They raise the trunk floor to make room for the larger wheel and tire.
  • sjcbillsjcbill Member Posts: 82
I found one dealer in the SF bay area that had the car I wanted ( M35, Diamond Graphite, Graphite interior, Journey, Tech with Sirius, so I requested a quote by email just before Infiniti took the inventory off of the web site. After a few back and forth messages the dealer wouldn't discount the one is stock but agreed to sell one already on order with the same configuration for cost +1K. The closest dealer wouldn't match the price so I'll have to drive about 60 miles to pick it up but it is expected in around the end of June or early July. If I'd waited I think I could have gotten a better price but I think this is a good deal without having to wait 3 months.

I fit 3 golf bags in the trunk yesterday- it helps that the hinges are outside the trunk
and I have a full size spare.

Cardas and Analysis Plus also make iPod to RCA cables if you REALLY want it to sound great :) They cost about 20x as much as the Radioshack cable though.

I tend to be a bit skeptical on those super expensive cables, especially with MP3s players. Have you tried it, vs the standard ones, and are you giving us your personal endorsement?

Well, I use the AP cable with my computer stereo equipment, and it easily blows the shack stuff away, as it should for $108. However, with an iPod and in a noisy environment like a car, it's probably not worth it. However, my favorite indie cable maker, Signal Cable, does make a 1\8" to RCA cable that has at least 80% of the performance of the AP silver oval for just $36, and that I would definitely recommend.

I hooked up my ipod with an inexpensive RCA cable and used it for about a week. From time to time, I'd hear significant static through the car sound system. When I unplugged the jacks and plugged them back, the problem would go away for an hour or two. Any thoughts on whether better quality RCA cables would help? Should also note that I had the ipod charging on the outlet at the same time, but that didnt seem to be the problem.

After using my ipod, an integrated solution (one that allows control through the car's CD controls would be ideal. I've noticed on the internet devices that claim to do this. Any experience with these?

One final note. I havent seen any discussion on the forum regarding the fact that you can play mp3s on the CD changer. This effectively allows the equivalent ~60 CDs to be available in the changer at once with text. This almost makes ipod unnecessary.
  • lexusguylexusguy Member Posts: 6,419
Sounds to me like the cable you are using is damaged somehow, probably a failure in the connection from wire to either the mini-jack or RCA plugs. A high quality cable such as the Signal Analog mini should definitely take care of that.

Making MP3 CDs would be another way to go, but keep in mind that iTunes .m4a files wont work.

Hi, don't know if anyone notices or if I am the only one experiencing this: When I first got my new M, the tach (RPM) and speedometer both used to do the half circle swing around the dials upon engine starts. However, I just noticed that they are not doing that anymore (and I don't remember when exactly did they stop). This is not a big deal but I wonder if something is wrong and if anyone else experiences this?

The trunk is deceptively big. And deep.

Paint? I've never seen an Infiniti peel or fade (like Jaguar). I wouldn't give the paintjob a second thought.

After 7 weeks I've finally found something I DON'T like about my M-car sport. A few days ago the weather gods remembered it's Arizona and coming to the end of May, so they turned the blast furnaces on and we're now in triple digits. The black steering wheel and black control buttons on the console are absolutely untouchable after only a few minutes parked in the sun. Not an exaggeration. There are only three solutions to this, two of which are unacceptable. 1) Back to driving gloves, a nuisance. 2) Cloth steering wheel wrapper, cosmetically repulsive in a car of this ilk. 3) Sun reflective screen put up inside the windshield, a minor annoyance but the least of the three evils.

What were to rest of the terms, months, down?, taxes in pmt?, and was it 600/mo or 584/month.

Why don't you just move up here to Minnesota, where we have had about 2 days this spring where air conditioning might be needed? Of course you would have to buy snow tires!
  • markcincinnatimarkcincinnati Member Posts: 5,343
I live in Cincinnati and travel regularly to Pittsburgh. I would only do that in winter in AWD (se the however, below).

However, with four winter tires mounted, I would suspect you would be OK for the late December through mid February period. The AWD isn't THAT much extra money is it? With AWD in this part of the US, 4 UHP A/S tires would probably be fine on the M35X.

With 2WD winter tires are a virtual "must have."

    -----------------------------

That static can be from any of several different sources. I personally believe that inexpensive cables (as say, from radio shack) are only slightly more likely to cause that kind of problem than are expensive ones, given that the vast majority of new ones will work just fine.

Here are some of the potential causes

    - faulty ipod headphone connector. (Over the years, I've seen 5 ipods in my family with faulty headphone connectors. They used to break down as they got older, more so on the earlier generation ipods.) Isolate this by trying another music source.

    - noise from the charger and it's circuit. This has been a problem for me, and can be isolated by checking if noise goes away when the charger is completely disconnected.

    - An intermittent short or break in the cable. The most common cause of this would be pulling out the tight fitting RCA plugs by yanking the wire instead of grabbing the plug itself. Try another cheap cable, no kidding, but a different brand. If the problem is still there, IMO, its not the cable.

    - a problem with the aux input circuitry. I actually had an intermittent short in my mercedes aux input, which the dealer handled for me.

    - rca plugs that are not plugged ALL the way in, which can cause an intermittent connection. Some of those RCA plugs are very tight and seem to be plugged in when the outer ground contact is just barely touching. In that case they actually can go further in another 1/4 of an inch.

You should be able to isolate this completely by getting a different cable and some other music source and changing things out until you've found the culprit.

I've gone back and forth on this as well in deciding to "X" or not. While in Cincinnati we have a few bad days here and there in the winter (esp 12/04), overall it is not bad.

Still, I see quite a few RWD Mercs, BMW, and Lexus, all without snow tires, that seem to get along fine. I imagine that only the more recent of these models would have some type of computer-controlled traction/yaw mechanism, which leads me to believe that AWD south of say, Chicago, may be overkill. Thoughts?

Here's the deal. But remember I took delivery on March 20th. 42 month lease, nothing down, list of car $50040.
Lease payment- $618 plus $30 to payoff BMW lease plus sales tax of $59 equals $707.

I cannot comment from personal experience about XM -- a couple of magazines said they favored Sirius. My wife's new BMW came with one free year of Sirius.

XM has crossed the 4 million subscriber mark. Sirius is about 1.4 million. XM thinks they will be at 5.5 million by year end. Sirius has visions that include the Stern impact and the Martha Stewart influence. Supposedly Donald Trump likes Sirius (from a biz perspective, one would imagine).

I have no axe to grind for or against XM.

I have been listening to Sirius as much as I can for the past 18 days. I have never heard the same song twice on "the Vault." My wife has 6 stations programmed into the buttons on her steering wheel and she claims not to have heard any repetition. We are now piping it through our home theater system since you can access it "free" if you have a subscription (even though it was paid for by BMW or however this works).

Generally speaking I would say sat radio is fantastic and if it can survive (maybe only one will survive) it ought to kill FM radio -- heck it may impact AM for all I know.)

The quality is better than the best FM and almost CD quality.

The selection of channels is wide, diverse and almost difficult to imagine.

I grew up listening to what was called (then) Progressive Rock -- I would give this at least a B+ or possibly A- as a faithful recreation of the music and the announcers are current and engaging. No commercials makes this quite the relaxing experience.

I cannot advise you which one to get -- we have Sirius and despite some folks belief that their libraries (of music) is shallow, I have not found this to be the case.

Four million XM subscribers is impressive (and neither service is making any money, yet). The M35 was offered with either Sirius or XM, the BMW only with Sirius, so we both elected Sirius (that and the magazine articles and a friend who claims his GM car has XM and his wife's whatever has Sirius and he prefers Sirius).

I say, who cares which one you get, you will be amazed -- well you will be if your taste expands beyond AM talk radio -- but even for that sat radio permits commercial free content and crystal clear sound.

Push the meter illumination control knob for 1 second to turn the needle sweep on or off. The knob is located at the lower left side of the tech dial.

That's too bad about the heat. I realize that interior black is a great looking color but the interior of the M is really dark esp with the dark liner and buttons and rosewood.
The wheat color I have is probably not going to be too hot in the summer but then again I'm already seeing dirt tracking in on the wheat colored mats when it rains. I'm ordering some protective mats (transparent). In case you're wondering Infiniti doesn't sell customized protective mats for the M yet. (as per ray catena this saturday) The set I ordered is supposedly customized from the M (www.drivingcomfort.com)- hopefully they are high quality.

What octane fuel is everyone running and how many miles per gallon are you getting. Please include the type of driving you are doing (city/Highway).

I know alot of people have said people who purchase cars in this class should not care about fuel efficiency but I really have 2 issues:

    1. I do alot of driving and I do not want to be at the station every other day.

    2. Gas is seemingly only going one way and it does get expensive.

I already ordered the car (M35x) and I am just curious what you have experienced out of the box and after say 5,000 miles.

Did anyone in NY get the wheel and tire warranty? I purchased my care at Atlantic Infinity and they do not offer the warranty. I would like to get the warranty from another dealer if possible.

    Thanks

The Speedometer and the Tach will only do the half circle swing around the dials when your setting for the gauges is to have the light around the gauges ON. This is the switch on the left side of the gauge cluster aka the eclipse dimmer. Keep pressing it to decrease or increase the brightness and to turn on and off the ring light around the gauges.

You planning on getting a DashMat for your M?

I'm in Phoenix, and my previous cars have had them, but this is my first car in this price range and can't decide whether it would ruin the look of the dash or not.

I also drive a lot (35-40K per.) I now have 5K on my M45. Just took a trans Sierra Nevada trip. On one tank I climbed from the desert floor to 7000', crossed 4 passes over 8500 ft and 3 over 7000. Went from Bishop, CA to Chico, CA via US 395, SR 203, US 50, Nev 28, SR 267, Int 80, SR 20, SR 70, SR 149, & SR 99. I nominate this as one of the great scenic drives in America as it includes desert, high alpine ( 12'-14' of snow still in Mammoth) and the Sierra Foothills, akin to the Ozarks, followed by the Central Valley and its Great Plains scenery. The nav was spot on and didn't,t miss a beat. I got to use the seq. shift a lot and and the car was a treat. Quickness kept me from getting stuck behind any slow ones on the two lanes. Also the XM was a total winner in this radio wave wasteland. The bonus 301 total miles and 22.6 MPG. Is this a great car or what. :shades:

The M45 is the first car I have owned with nav so I don't have a lot of experience. The nav functioned flawlessly until last night, when it could not locate me. I drove about 35 miles and for the entire drive it placed me about 5 miles SE of my actual location. It could tell what direction I was heading but obviously had me on the wrong streets, when it could find a street to put me on. The best part was when it showed me driving down the runway of the Burbank airport. I nearly ran into the airplane icon that they use to identify airports! Finally, when I was about a mile from home, it suddenly adjusted itself and placed me at my actual location. This morning it worked fine on the drive to the office.

I'm hoping this was just a temporary glitch. I have no idea what could be the cause. Sunspots? Full moon? Satellite issues? Has anyone else had this happen to them? Do you know what could cause this?

I'm on my 4th Navi equiped vehicle (2 old Acuras and a current Acura and Infiniti) and I've never experienced anything like what you describe. I can only recommend that you keep an eye on it and don't hesitate to have the dealer look at it if it occurs again.

In most every other dedicated Forum (e.g. RL, A6) there is a thread discussing Problems and Solutions. I know that no vehicle is perfect and problem free; yet there does not seem to be a lot of problem related discussions with the new M. Do you think its too new or indeed a relatively trouble-free car?

Do you think its too new or indeed a relatively trouble-free car?

Conventional wisdom says don't buy the first year of a new model, but I liked this car so much I swam upstream. I've not had a hint of a problem anywhere in the car, although others here have had nuisance issues resolved. I'm not hard on my cars ... but cars with systematic glitches expose them irrespective of driving habits. I've seen nothing serious or repetitive on this thread that causes me to worry about my decision.

It's funny that you mentioned that, because I was wondering what ever happened to the survey and the winter mats I was promised (for completing the survey.)

They told me I would get it in the mail...1 month later...no survey...no mats. :confuse:

I've had my Q45 for three years, and I had pretty much the identical problem, just once when the car was about 2 months old. It was definitely unsettling at that time, but the problem disappeared about a half hour later, and never once reappeared.

A few weeks later, when I went to the dealer for another reason, I asked him to recalibrate the nav, just to be safe. Note that I HAD used the system regularly between that failure and the recalibration, without any hint of a problem.

OTOH, If the problem continues to recur I'm sure it can be dealt with. There are two kinds of calibration adjustments for the Q. Worst case would be to replace the GPS antenna and/or the NAV unit, which no doubt the dealer would be willing to do if nothing else worked.
