Did my new M35x premium, Black/Black with 5 coats of zaino.
First I did the dawn
Then I Z5'd it, Z6 in between, then two coats of Z2 (Z6 in between each). Ended with Z6. Unbelievable results. I know its a new car so it looks unbelievable already, but the proof in the pudding is after the first storm you drive through. With zaino, storms don't destroy that just detailed look. In fact my M looked almost as good as it did b-4 the storm (& remember I have a black car). You will never see beading like Zaino does. Hardly anything sticks to the car!
The week after & did the first three coats, i put on another 2 of Z2. BTW, all coats were ZFX activated for quicker drying time. I used the zaino wash the second time although you can use any car wash (only use dawn the first time).
I recommend Dawn, then clay bar the entire car. Then wash again with Z7. Then start your Z2 w/ ZFX, then Z6. I would do at least 3 coats of the Z2 with a Z6 between each. No need for Z5 unless you have a swirl problem. You can then ice the cake with the new Z8.
You may think clay bar is a waste of time and not necessary with a new car, but I say it's a must do. You will not believe the stuff that is embedded in the paint by the time it makes it to the dealer's lot. I recently did a brand new GMC Envoy following the above procedure and it looks incredible and cleans up easy after driving through the rain.
Below is text from section 3-8 of the owners manual that references the engine start, basically the key fob needs to be insdie the cabin;
Operating range for engine start function
The operating range for starting the engine inside the vehicle is shown in the illustration (the illustration shows only the interior of the cabin shaded)
O If the Intelligent Key is on the instrument panel, rear parcel shelf, inside the glove box or door pocket, or the corner of interior compartment, it may not be possible to start the engine.
O If the Intelligent Key is near the door or door glass outside the vehicle, it may be possible to start the engine.
It depends on options but I think on M45 it's around $4,500 - $5,000 difference. I think if you get invoice + $1,000 or MSRP - $3,500 - $4,000 is a good deal.
Why don't you just leave the fob on your desk or in your desk drawer, walk outside and test the possibility of opening your door handle and starting the car? Up to 30 feet doesn't mean it works necessarily from 30 feet. Best thing to do is try to "steal" the car yourself...heck, put the fob against your office window as close as possible to your car and give that a shot as well....

Best thing to do is try to "steal" the car yourself...heck, put the fob against your office window as close as possible to your car and give that a shot as well....
It will not work. The range for a *button* pushed on the FOB is 30 feet. The range for keyless ignition/entry is 24 inches within carefully defined zones. There are three exterior zones, 1 around drivers door, 1 around passengers door, 1 around the trunk. Almost the entire interior of the car is a zone. The car is aware of what zone the key is in and this controls the activation of services, such as opening the trunk, or starting the car. If the key is not in the interior zone it will not start.
This doesn't sound like an Infiniti problem, it sounds like a personal problem, if you can't get used to turning off your engine, maybe you shouldn't drive this automobile. I bought the M two days ago and I have no problem turning the button off when I park, in fact if it is all mind set to you put you Key FOB in the charger and pretend that is your Key to the ignition, so the next time you park your car release the Key FOB from it's charger and it will remind you to push the button to turn the engine off. It's the most impressive gadget in the car the fact that you can push start and push to turn off the car.
So this car can't be deadly but you sir can. :confuse:
I do not quite agree it's a personal problem. OK if it is, then why there are many nice (and might be called idiot proof) features such as "auto headlight turn off", "lane departure warning", "intelligent cruise control", etc.? Especially for the "auto headlight turn off", it's way less important than "auto engine turn off".
Human makes mistakes...
Everything can be further engineered towards (probably never be) perfection...
CD & DVD units are powered on, but mechanically stopped until a disc is required to be read, exactly like the CD-ROM/DVD units on a PC. Since failures are almost always mechanical with these units, we should be able to watch plenty of DVD and listen to CDs for a long time before these units crack up.
Again, partially true. The mechanical parts are subject to vibration, motion, heat, and aging even if not playing. Also, the majority of parts are electronic and all are likely to eventually fail although most will likely outlast the car. Most electronic part failures are accelerated by higher temperatures. Power on condition causes the parts themselves to generate heat which adds to frequent high ambient temperatures inside a car. This is why some companies do "burn in" in a elevated temperature environment to catch as many "infant mortality" failures as possible. If you look at MTBF estimates ( mean time between failures) for any electronic device they are almost always specified as POH (power on hours) with a duty cycle for use.
This does not mean that these drives are unreliable or that you will experience a failure. The point being argued was that with three drives you were more likely to experience a failure than with one and with that I agree.
Isn't Dawn too harsh for the car's finish and clearcoat? It would strip away many things...including the top clear/finish coat. I used to use dishwashing detergnet myself a long time ago and found that it was too hars so now I use one of the car wash concentrates.
What are others using out there that works well as a car wash concentrate? Any input is welcome. As far as waxes go, I swear by Maguirre's.
Dishwashing detergent will never strip paint/clearcoat from your car, unless you're using paint thinner or other petroleum distillate to wash your dishes.
I've been trying my best not to jump in on this thread, but can no longer contain myself....
It seems to me that Infiniti has liability concerns regardless of how they design a running engine to function when the key fob disappears.
First, the *only* way the engine could conceivable be designed to shut-off automatically when the key fob is no longer in range is if the car is not moving and in park. The reason is obvious, image driving down the highway when the fob battery gasped it's last breath and pow the engine shuts down.....
So, why doesn't infiniti have the engine shut-off when the key fob goes out of range and the car is not moving & in Park? I can think of one major concern stemming from the fact that people are stupid. Image the pet owner or worse mother that leaves an animal or child in the vehicle (with the air conditioning on) while they run into the store for 1 second... Poor form indeed, but remember people are stupid. They bring the fob with them on a hot August day .... It takes a little longer than anticipated ... They return and lo-n-behold their 50K car roasted Skippy or Chippy.
My guess is Infiniti chose the current design to transfer responsibility to the owner. Which case sounds worse (for Infiniti) in court? He forgot to turn off the car and it ran in the garage injuring the family. He walked away from his running vehicle with his son strapped into its air conditioned safety without knowing Infiniti had designed it to automatically turn off and become an oven.....
Now I suppose they could have designed it to keep the car running, but set off the alarm... That would get your attention if you left it running in the garage *and* keep junior safe in the parking lot... But you know what, I'm glad they didn't because I have heard the little chime alarm that sounds each and every time I've jumped out of the car to go to the mailbox and if a full car alarm sounded it would piss me off....
Regarding the fellow afraid to park in his garage - get over it - go to home depot - purchase a (or two if you must) CO detector - Install it... Sleep well....
No way. Dawn or any other dishwashing detergent will not strip away the clearcoat paint. Dawn is used only as a first step to ensure any wax and other surface contaminates are removed before applying the poly finish. After you are done, you will never be using Dawn again but the Z7 car wash that is part of the system. As far as Maguires goes, I have used it over the years. It is a toy compared to the Zaino system.
So how are other keyless systems (i.e., Mercedes keyless-go and Lexus) designed? It is my understanding that the car will run till turned off', then it will not restart if the fob is no longer with you as when dropping someone off. I guess I have to test this theory in my driveway to see if a running car will turn off without possessing the fob.
BTW, how can someone be so irresponsible as to leaving a pet or child in a running parked vehicle for almost any amount of time?
Any ideas when the M will be tested? The new RL and GS are both touting their excellent crash tests results and from what I can tell the M has not been tested. Seems a bit odd when you consider that the M beat the GS to market.
As for the clanging sound caused by the Exhaust Heat Shield contracting, the dealer in Santa Clara heard the sound but won't admit it's a problem and fix it since there is no "TSB" (technical service bulletin) yet.
The dealer's suggestion is to call the 1-800 Infiniti number (1-800-662-6200, then 7 for customer satisfaction) to report the problem, hopefully with enough "inputs" from earlier adaptors a TSB will be created by engineering department, then local dealership can fix this nagging problem.
Please reply if you have better luck with your local dealer and call 1-800-622-6200 to provide feedback to Infiniti.
Thanks for the note. Yes, I have them on and have about 375 miles on them. I do like them very much. I was going to report when I had 500 on them which is when the tire is broken in. It rides much softer than the Eagles. I am happy I went this way since I cannot see how the Pirellis could be any better and I feel good about the cost being substantially less than the Pirelli. My car rides much more to my liking and I would suggest a move to the Avons if anyone is bothered by the ride as I was. Thanks. Hawkeye
Thanks for all the clarifications. This forum is awesome. As a new owner, I only had time to read the quick reference guide and it does not go into details that the fob has two separate functions (for entry/engine start) and for buttons, with two quite different ranges. Hence my scare.
I have not actually conducted the experiment after reading the guide because I considered it pointless. Time to get a PhD in M's Technology by studying the thick manual.
Thanks to all the Zainoists who replied. Still unclear if a Z7 wash would be recommended after Dawn'ing? Dawn is said to be quite alkaline and I am wondering if it would be better to neutralize it before Z2. On the other hand, it is yet another step in this already laborious process.
I purchased one Q coming off lease a number of years ago. As I recall, the purchase price was the residual not negotiable but this can change over time obviously
This is an excellent recap. Thank you very much. I bought my 2nd LS 430 about 1.5 years ago and I'm getting bored with it. The M Premium looks like a suitable replacement. But when I test drove the M35x, I thought there was a little too much engine noise/commotion. This might be by design, but it gave me second thoughts. I was glad to see the better MPG, too.
Look at the sticker visible when you open the driver's door. Mine says 33 psi cold both front & rear. Since the tire pressure tends to change by about 1 psi for every 10 degrees F, I inflated mine to 34 psi mid-day given that mornings are significantly colder. I would also recommend to double-check the pressure with a calibrated gauge because it is quite possible that the internal sensors are off a bit (the difference between accuracy and resolution comes into play here). For example, my calibrated analog gauge showed 34 even for all tires, but the right rear reads 35 on the computer.
> This is an excellent recap. Thank you very much.
You are very welcome. I am just trying to pay off the debt I owe to this forum--it contains so much useful info on the new M and cars in general.
Yes, the engine and road noise is up there. I would say that at 60 mph it is acceptable and at 70 mph it is a bit too loud for my liking at this price level (this is supposed to be a fairly refined imported sports sedan not a muscle car from the Monster Garage on the Discovery Channel). We are talking steady state on the highway at these speeds, not rapid acceleration. During heavy acceleration, the engine tone is "sweet" especially when pushed above 4k rpm (have not tried it yet -- only 530 miles on the car, but tried it on the car I test drove).
Now let me pose a question about M's tires: The car comes standard with Goodyears with a treadwear rating of 260. I heard opinions that Goodyears are "made of recycled rubber" and thus are generally not worth a consideration by a serious car enthusiast. The 260 rating is low, so I hope that they get bare soon which will force me to upgrade to Michelin, my favorite brand. But, I confess I do not know much more about tires--any opinions on this topic? Some people mentioned Avons and Pirellis; perhaps they have a comment.
My M45 Sport came with Bridgestone tires. I have 5800 miles now and the road noise isnt an issue with my tires inflated at 33psi cold.
I absolutely love the car, the looks, acceleration, technology etc. I have replaced one tire and at a cost of about $380 and it took a few days to get the tire. I didnt get the full size spare but wish I had now since it seems like a very good deal. I am not sure what the prices per tire are of the others you mentioned, nor am I clear about the wear rating of the tires mine has. I would be interested if anyone had some information on the Bridgestone rating as well as the other tire prices and ratings.
I would suggest that you go to tirerack. com and you will very surprised about how comprehensive their info is regarding tires and performance ratings. I ha ve Avon Techs on now after switching out of the OEM Goodyear Eagles. They were $144 each. As an aside I have been listening to the DVD of the movie "Top Gun" and I can't believe the sound, separation, and the excitement. Give it a try and let me know what you folks think. Hawkeye
last fall because I had horrific michelin mxv4 energy tires [brand new supplied by the dealer] on my 01 ls 430, tires I also had as replacements for defective bridgestones on my 04 acura tl, I decided to upgrade to 18 inch wheels and tires for better feel. though my car has an air suspension it feels much more planted with the 18s and continental extreme contact tires I purchased from sears which beat the tire rack price by 10% [store policy. they even ordered them from tire rack]. these tires are very comparable to the michelin pilot sport a/s and much cheaper. in fact they are the exact same size I believe as the 18 inchers on the m45/35 [245 15 45]. If you want a very good all season tire that is comfortable and quiet you should consider this tire. its now 152 dollars at tire rack. should I lease an m thats exactly what I am switching to.
I've had reasonably good results with Toyo. I've had Pilot Sports which are nice but too pricey. I've read very good things about Falken tires, but havent tried any myself.
For "performance A\S tires", CR rates Falken highest, followed by Bridgestone and Michelin.
For UHP tires, Goodyear Eagle F1, followed by Toyo and Continental.
I am wondering why you replaced just one tire (no explanation)--I am also wondering how long these GoodYear tires are supposed to last--anybody know the answer to these questions?
Order an M45s last weekend Now have to wait 3 months . I drove the 45s a couple times, but didn't get a chance to get it above 50mph. How is the exhaust sound in the 60 to 70 mph range. Acceptable, annoying, a constant drone? Will be taking a few trips to the Carolina's in the future, 12hr drive, and was concerned that on long trips the sound may override everything else that's great about the car. Turning in an Audi A6 2.7, and long, high speed trips are a pleasure in this car.
I have 5800 miles on my M45 sport and have found no issue with the exhaust sounds. The only time I notice the sound is when slowing down and the sound then is pleasing to me. Sort of a deep throaty V8 sound as the engine winds down to lower rpm.
I also ordered an M45s at the end of May, was told the earliest it will come is beginning of September. I test drove it a couple of times, the first time the dealer let me drive alone for 30 min, I went out to I-80 and floored it...I can't say the sound of the engine bothered me at all at any speed. It's hard to judge from test drives though, I read some people here complain about high RPMs on 35 so I think on 45 it will be better and less noisy but again it wasn't a factor for me. I was thinking of buying FX45 which I think would have been louder.
My order won't go in until first week of July for me. Waited a little too long, so October for me. I was on the fence about the 45s or 35x, since I live about 60 mi north of NYC, and was concerned about snow. Since I work from home, shouldn't be a big problem. But had to have the 45s. Haven't had a V8 since my GTO and 442 days.
I have had my new M45 Sport J/T/DVD for over 2 months now. I cannot say how pleased I am with this car. I traded in my BMW for this awesome ride and have no regrets. I looked at BMW/Lexus/Acura/MB/ and all the domestic options...and Infiniti is the car for people who love to drive. The service was great, the car is fantastic with absolutely no issues and now I make every excuse to get out and drive my dream machine. Questions I do have: 1. Is the Zaino system REALLY worth the effort? 2. What should I use to clean and protect the wood interior with?
To listen to my CDs, I naturally need to turn the audio unit on. What is more likely to break over time? The audio unit (electronics only) or the CD (electronics and mechanical)?
Car electronics are designed to resists very high temperature (such as a car cooking under the SoCal sun for hours), such as 150+ F. They fail in very rare occasions. CD and DVD units' mechanical parts are by nature more prone to failure. Having several units vs one reduces the usage of each, and hence, the incidence of a problem. So I'm happy to have three units instead of one.
> Time to get a PhD in M's Technology by studying the thick manual.
No, not really. I'd say yes with a BMW's iDrive, but Infiniti managed to "get it right". No bells and whistles, just simple things, easy to do. Take 15 minutes to go through all the menu options (without the user's manual), and you will see 90% of what the system does. And you will wonder how you could drive a car without that.
IMHO, some are twisting the purpose of the keyless system, but now that I have it, I now struggle when I need to drive my wife's Armada ("oh yes, I need the #$%^*@ key...").
I have m35x for about three months diamond graphite. Zaino took me about 3 hours The shine is great but it also seems to really decrease the amount of dirt that sticks to the car and wheels . Makes it very easy to keep looking good. Was definitely worth it for me. I have not put anything on the wood trim yet.
With all the tire talk going on here does anyone have any information about the pros and cons of filling your tires with nitrogen?
Perhaps this isn't the best place for this discussion, but on a quick scan of the tire category I didn't find anything on this topic.
I ask because I recently bought replacement Michelins at Costco where they made a big deal about filling the tires with nitrogen instead of air. They even put bright green caps on the valve stems. (Isn't green supposed to be used for oxidizers?) They claim that nitrogen will provide more stable pressure over varying temperature ranges and will be better for the rubber.
It's been a long time since I took any chemistry classes but I recall that the air was already about 80% nitrogen so how much difference could this make?
I'm waiting on a diamond graphite m35 sport and am thinking about going the Zaino route. Did you car already come with some type of paint sealer treatment from the dealer? If so did you do anything before the Dove treatment?
