The problem with waiting is that inventory is going to fade away and limit your choices. Sounds like color is important and since you're going to be living with the car a good number of years, buy sooner and get what you want.
New owners, please report about your deals.
Last Friday I finally bought the 2016 CRV EX AWD in Chicago area. The dealer who quoted the lowest ($23,875) was not having the color that I wanted. They said that they can get one for me but were not ready to give the OTD number. Later they started talking about the accessories. At this point I stopped considering this dealer due to uncertainties involved and over that I also felt that the dealer is only trying to get me to the dealership.
The final numbers with the dealership from which I bought were:
Selling Price including destination $24,254
Doc Fee $169
License and Title $221
Tax $2016
OTD $26,660
I would like to Thanks members of this forum, especially @stever, for their valuable inputs that helped me in making the decision.
Can someone help to tell me how to solve this issue please.
I got CRV EX FWD yesterday from a dealer in CA. They told me there were some water spots in the hood. I got the car late in the evening so didn't see the issue until this morning under the sun. I saw many mini scratches on the hood. Is there a damage when doing a wax on the car paint? Does the scratches go away later? what can I ask the dealer to handle this?
Can Honda step in to help me at this case? or what is a best way to handle this. Please help. Thanks.
Fyi, OTD 25,999 (base 23,387 + fee (654) + tax (2229)
fee (doc 80, electronic registration 29, vehicle license fee 153, registration/transfer/tittling fee 111, ca tire 8.75, office fee 272)
Congrats on the new ride (good reminder why it's better to pick up a new car during the day).
I am in the market for a 2016 Honda CR-V EX-L FWD w/o Navigation. Two dealerships in Silicon Valley (95136 & 94303) have provided the following quotes.
Dealer #1 Selling Price: $26,588.00
Doc Fee: 80.00 (max allowed in California)
Sales Tax @ 8.75% + $7: 2,333.45
Total License & Fees: 323.75 (estimated)
Total $29,325.20
Dealer #2 Selling Price: $26,488.00 via internet quote
Doc Fees: 80.00 (max allowed in California)
Sales Tax @ 8.75% + $7: 2,324.70
Total License & Fees: 323.75 (estimated)
Total $29,216.45
Both quotes include the $900.00 destination charge. The MSRP should be $29,345 although each dealer claims it is now $29,445 even though the stickers show the slightly lower number. Dealer #2 showed me the invoice which was about $350 lower than his daily price sheet. The amount on the actual invoice was $27,602 while his sheet showed $27,952. Seems like the dealers are artificially increasing their numbers at this point of the model year.
Your thoughts?
Thanks,
Dan
As for the price, I think you overpaid by about $900 depending on what options you got. Take a look

TMV is coming in at $26,938. Seems like California prices have been getting better, even in your area and the Bay Area in general. Kind of surprised that both quotes aren't much below the TMV average.
Both quotes are $1,000/$1,100 below invoice, which isn't bad, but another four or five hundred bucks would be nice too.
Stever, this forum was instrumental in helping me formulate my $1,600 below invoice target price of $26,000. When the right deal dropped in my lap, I jumped on it with confidence. Thanks a bunch!
Congrats!
$24,370 is around $2,200 below invoice for the EX AWD.
You might yet beat that price, but inventory is shrinking every day. That said I still see ~400 EX AWDs within 50 miles of 20001.
Me, I'd likely do the OTD deal for $26,163 and call it a day. If you want to play the game then yeah, sit tight until the 29th or 30th and tell the dealer you are ready to buy for $25,800. Then drive to Georgetown and blow that $300 savings on a great meal.
If you can find a hungry dealer or two wanting to meet quota at the month end that's fast approaching you could even shoot for $23,750 or so, but your selection may be getting thin up there. Cali is getting more aggressive but it's still not like Virginia where you'll see deals from $1,500 to $2,000 below invoice. If you can travel to the Bay Area, you might do a bit better there.
Let us know how it goes.
Original quote was OTD for $29,700 broken down as follows:
Selling price: $26,997
Dealer fee, electronic title fee and add ons: 720
GA TAVT (7%): 1942
Tag, title, lemon law: 41
Negotiated down to $29,200 OTD.
The best quotes we received (greater Boston area) for 2016 CRV are as follows FYI:
EX AWD
Car w/ destination $23,971.00
Doc Fee. $ 298.00
Tax (6.25%). $ 1,516.81
Plate/Registration. $ 140.00
Inspection. $ Free
OTD. $25,925.81
Touring AWD
Car w/ destination $29,467.00
Doc Fee. $. 298.00
Tax (6.25%). $. 1,860.31
Plate/Registration. $ 140.00
Inspection. $. Free
OTD. $31,765.31
Hope this helps.
$27300 + 7% + $150 doc + $30 title right about $29400 OTD.
Thanks for the help.!
I started contacting dealers but the first two quotes I got so far (pre tax, pre fees) seems very high, even higher than what people reported for their OTD in this forum!
The True Market Value average for Columbus is almost the same as invoice ($26,539).
So in theory, you should be able to get closer to $25,500 or maybe even better.
Inventory is winding down. There's ~35 EX AWDs left in your area. That's not great for buyers.
If you can hang out over the weekend, hopefully you'll get another couple of quotes. Then you'll be in some sort of shape to counter-offer on Monday or Tuesday, hoping that a dealer will need to move another few cars in order to make quota.
You may want to try Cincy or Cleveland too.
$25,885 including destination fee,
Ohio Doc fee of $250
$33.50 temp tag/title fee
Taxes at $ 1,894.50
So OTD is $28063.
I have just started reading this thread a few days ago, and I believe I went through over half of them, but there are still a few things I'm not sure I understand.
By direct comparison with what @shuyak reported, my OTD price almost $2100 more. I should take more into consideration when comparing OTD (or shouldn't even compare OTD), but that's a huge difference between the quotes! I can drive to Boston and come back and still save a bunch lol. I am hoping to be able to get an OTD at around $26k. I might try cincy and Cleveland as those aren't too far from me if dealers in Columbus can't go that low. By the way, what does it mean when the TMV is almost the same as invoice? Less room to negotiate?
Thanks!
OTD is a good way to negotiate but it makes it hard to compare deals since we all have different taxes and fees.
Your doc fee, for example is about $200 too high buy about $500 less than what most Florida dealers charge. Some states limit the fee (CA's max is $80).
It doesn't really mean anything when TMV is close to invoice - just saves me some typing and math.
Well, it does mean that market conditions are such that a good number of buyers (half?) are getting deals below invoice.
On the flip side, invoice doesn't really mean much any more. There's a bunch of ways dealers can make money that we don't know much about (holdback, bonuses, spiffs, dealer cash, etc.).
One more question if I may. I wonder if the doc fee is negotiable. I know if I take say $200 off the total then it will look like the doc fee was negotiated, but just wondering as most OH quotes I received so far have doc fee listed for $200+.
They never can quite explain why they can charge different prices to different people for the same exact car without getting sued for discrimination.
The way around it is to tell them to leave the doc fee and to lower the selling price of the car by an equivalent amount (a wrinkle on OTD negotiation).
There is one gotcha about buying out of state - lemon laws usually only kick in when you buy your car in the state you live in. You'll still have your other failure of warranty type claims but lemon lawyers are focused on the cheap and dirty solutions and will be less interested in helping you if you buy out of state.
On the other hand, lemon laws are pretty useless in lots of places - don't know about Ohio, but often the manufacturer has 4 tries to fix the lemon and after they lose the case, some states give them one last shot at it. The idea of course is to wear you down so that you'll give up and just buy another car. But that's a different rant.
Won't hurt to show your quote(s) to your local dealers and invite them to match them. But a trip to Detroit would be cool too - love the Diego murals at DIA and visiting friends is always fun.
If you focus on that fee, rather than on the total out the door price, then they have done their job.

Griffey07. What dealer in Indy did you work with?
So if the taxes and fees are around $850, then you have an average deal.
The more the taxes are in your region, the better your deal becomes.
We'd like to see you get a selling price of $2,000 below invoice or more this time of the month (and time of the year).
That would put you around $26,000 before taxes.
You can play with the numbers for your zip at this link.
(I zapped your dupe post btw)
$23200 + 7% Tax + 399 (Doc Fee).... OTD Price : $26000 (New Jersey)
Extras: Dealer extra Packages (worth $700)
Please let me know if this is worthy ?
So your selling price is $2,000 below invoice and $1,500 below the TMV average.
That's good.
The doc fees are a bit high and dealer extra packages are rarely worth squat.
My recommendation would be to let the dealer keep the doc fee for their profit and make them eat the extra package. So you'd hopefully get them to bite around $25,300 OTD. If you have time, shop the quote around. Maybe you'll land on another nearby dealer with an SE in stock for less.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
So the dealer is eating the fees, taxes and remote start gizmo.
What are your taxes there - 10%? Worse? That would knock the selling price down to around $29,000, or $3,000 below invoice.
Sounds pretty good from here (usual disclaimers about my backward math - did I really get $3,000 below invoice?
All are AWD. Tax is paid to state at registration here, so these are pre sales tax prices.
LX 22,500 plus 299 doc. List price is 26,045
SE 23,150 plus 299 doc. List is 26,745
EX 24,500 plus 299 doc. List is 28,195
Frankly, I'm 100% fine with steel wheels, and I don't care at all about a sunroof or much about heated seats. However, two things drive me nuts about the CR-V. The most heinous is the lack of variable intermittent wipers on the trims below EX. I've owned junker cars 15 years ago that had variable speed wipers, and it's astounding to me that you have to go EX to get this. My other beef is the lack of decent roof rails. Even the OE rails on the EX-L aren't great, they are flush with the body so you can't wrap straps around them. Handy to be able to do this with canoes, etc. The RAV, for example, has a far better rail/rack setup, as does the Forester.
Anyway, I like how the Honda drives the best, so those gripes aside, wondering if there is any more meat on the bone or not? I've never seen discounts like this on CR-Vs.
Invoice is $26,526 (including the $900 destination) and the TMV average price paid is $25,857.
So your quote is $2,000 below invoice. And yeah, that's a great discount, especially for areas outside of DC and a couple of other spots.
Tell 'em you'll have to buy a Yakima rack for $400 and so they should have to eat the doc fee.
$23,669 including destination and doc (didn't breakout)
Comments welcomed.
For a price, spec it out using the Make | Model dropdown menu up top and shoot for $1,500 to $2,000 below the invoice price.
