I'm consider looking at the Mazda 5 if it becomes available before I need a new car, but for now my top pick is a Mazda 3 5-door with ABS/SAB/SAC.

I'm on the east coast (NJ) and I've gotten some internet quotes that all tend to be roughly $500 over the invoice price given by Edmunds (regardless of color, specific options, etc.). And, of course, these initial quotes are all "before taxes and fees".

After reading the posts here, it seems like I should be able to negotiate down to get a lot closer to invoice. Is that a fair assessment? Reading the above post about David paying $270 below invoice makes me feel like $500 over invoice is a rip-off (even though Edmunds' "True Market Value", what others are supposedly paying, is $700 over invoice).

Any thoughts to help me out?

    Thanks!

I spotted a used 2005 Mazda3s 5-door, SAB/SAC+Moonroof Pkg., 5-speed, 3700 miles, Winning Blue. This is a local car traded in by an employee of the dealer (or so they say, I will verify if I make an offer). They want $16,685. Any comments?

    Meade,
nope, don't head up to Richmond (Went there one time when a friend briefly lived there, otherwise I may pass through on my way up the east coast once in a blue moon).

Took in the local attraction with the Quaker Steak & Lube 200 truck race at Lowe's Motor Speedway here in Charlotte last night. Purposely took my truck instead of the 3 to make sure I didn't try to reenact the race on the way home!

Color/insurance: I don't think State Farm (my insurer) cares about color when setting the price. However, when I compared the 5-door 3 with the Toyota Matrix at one point for insurance cost, the Matrix was actually $10/6 Month more than the Mazda3! That surprised me.

Seems like from the posts here people in the northeast are paying above invoice. It may be that in the southeast demand isn't quite as high, and they are more willing to deal. Plus, as I said, I'm sure they made profit off of the "Charlotte Assessment" and the paperwork fees. Of course, that only puts them at about $200 over invoice out the door if those were pure profit. And though there was a lot of supply, some packages like the ABS/SAB/SAC (which we got) seemed a bit harder to find 'round here, so I don't know about the demand thing for sure.

My temperment means that since we didn't need the car immediately, I was prepared to shop and play dealers off each other until I got within $100 of invoice. I just found a dealer that saved me some trouble. So if I were you, I wouldn't accept the $500 over invoice yet. YMMV.

Where does Edmund get the TMV number, anyway? Is my sale factored in? :)

I think you should'nt need to pay any more than 300 over invoice for the special editions. If it has Navigation, you should only pay 200 over invoice, since Navi's are really hard to sell for these guys.

I think it is pretty awful they didnt tell you it was a 04 model.
I got a smarmy note by email about "differences in values" - I'll say!
    Tells you something about management.

I own a 2004 MZ3i 4 door silver 16" mags 2.0 Litre. It has 17K miles on it and I drive the piss out of it......needless to say the car loves it. I change the oil routinely at 3K miles (its due this week actually). My gas mileage has been as high as 38 MPG! No complaints here. Now this isn't highway mind you. It is back roads in Connecticut. I keep my speed between 50 and 60 usually in 5th (5 speed manual). This is by far the most economical speed range. The roads are very hilly too, go figure. Just a heads up that the car is capable of doing better than specifically rated. I baught the car in Mass too which means it has that little extra emissions garbage on it which makes it a zero emissions car. Not sure if that makes a difference on fuel economy for sure.

I am looking forward to the Speed3.

Does Mazda offer any marketing support or dealer cash on Mazda3 5-door?
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
My wife just informed last nite that she "hates" the new gauge cluster in the 3...I think it's pretty cool actually. Since the next new cars goes to her, looks like our garage will not be having one. Very bummed here, but it is her car and she has to be happy, and as any husband knows...if the wife aint happy...you're not gonna be happy!
Hopefully in '98 when my turnrolls around, the 3 will still be around or possibly it's next generation so i can "zoom zoom".
    Enjoy your 3's guys...wish I could!

    S Plan for a Mazda3 5-door with 5 speed manual transmission is $15, 986.
If you have S Plan, my Mazda dealer said they must give you $7 below invoice price and must show you a copy of the invoice.

I have a Partner Code (my company uses Ford vehicles for our fleet so they extend the Friends & Family discount to all of us) and when I logged onto the www.fordpartner.com website with my partner code, I was able to download a pdf of all pricing - S-Plan and MSRP for the base vehicle and all options.

I spent a lot of time researching and test driving cars this month, and I finally bought a Mazda 3. Here are the details, and the price:

2005 Mazda 3, 5 door, manual trans, ABS/SAC, Moonroof/6CD, Autodim compass mirror, rear bumper plate, custom leather seats (Katzkin) with warmers, titanium grey. I used S-plan pricing, which was $18,479. The dealer threw in the custom leather for free (usually $995)! After my grad rebate, I paid $17,979 for everything, which seems like a pretty great deal. Regardless, I'm VERY happy with my purchase!!!

Now ... onto the problem of getting my iPod to work with the factory stereo.

And, by the way, what's this Gerber discount I keep reading about? Can you still apply after making a purchase?
  • bunk1968bunk1968 Member Posts: 119
    Thank you!
I am looking at purchasing the Mazda 3 Hatchback with ABS package and Moonroof package and with a manual trans.
The invoice price on edmunds.com is $18007.
Can you tell me the exact S-plan price for the car I have listed with these exact feartures??
I wish I could get a copy of what the prices are for the S-plan, but I don't think that is possible.
Thank you for all your help.
I was offered the exact car I described above for $17300 before Tax and ...
***Can I get the Gerber.com rebate with the S-plan??
How much is the rebate for??
If I get my S-plan price and then tell them I also have the Gerber rebate will they be able to go even lower in price??
  • smariasmaria Member Posts: 279
In addition to registering at Gerber.com, you can find some information at www.mazdausa.com/gerber. It's a $500 rebate. The rules say that you need a copy of the actual advertisement that Gerber mailed out, so dd123's advice (message 1306) sounds like the best approach.
  • smariasmaria Member Posts: 279
$17300 for a car with an invoice of $18007?? Wow, sounds like a deal...wish I had access to S-plan pricing. I'm probably going to end up paying nearly $1000 more for the same car in another month or so (without S-plan).
  • luckyaluckya Member Posts: 3
Could you please elaborate a little on the registering part? Do you just register, or do you have to sign up for "PARTNER POSTAL MAIL" or anything else in particular? Do I need to e-mail them about the Mazda rebate specifically , or does it arrive in the mail with a bunch of other coupons anyway? If I e-mail them about it, do I just ask for the "Mazda rebate", or is there another way to identify it?

    Thanks in advance!

It's getting hot here in New Orleans, and since the A/C in my old Passat is long dead, I want me a new Mmmmazda3 sooooon! :shades:
  • smariasmaria Member Posts: 279
Since we missed the original mailing of the Mazda rebate, I don't think it will just come in the mail without directly asking for it...but I could be wrong. Here's what I did:

I registered at the Gerber website, then I sent an email (through the "contact us" section of the website) asking if they could mail me the ad for the Gerber-sponsored Mazda rebate. They sent me an initial reply which was not at all helpful. But then I wrote back to clarify, and it worked the second time. Here's how I worded the second email:

"I'd like to use the $500 Gerber-sponsored Mazda rebate, but my problem is that I can't find the "Ad" that is mentioned in the instructions for obtaining the rebate. Is there any way that another Ad could be mailed to me?"

This worked out perfectly, because Gerber responded with:

"Thank you for your e-mail reply.
The material you inquired about is being sent to you. It should arrive in a few days.
Best wishes from your friends @ gerber.com."

Just try to be as clear as possible when making the request, and make sure to include your mailing address when you write to Gerber to ask for the rebate.

    Good luck!

    S-plan for:
    manual transmission=15,986
    ABS = $688
    moonroof/6-CD = 765
    total=17,439

ask your dealer. they have to show you s-plan pricing if you have the PIN.

Is the price list you gave for the hatchback??
Thank YOU so much for this info!
I signed up for the Gerber rebate on Mazda.com, but I do not have the add. I will try to follow the intructions here, but my big question is if I get the S-plan price, DOES A DEALER HAVE TO HONOR THE $500 REBATE ON TOP OF THAT????
Thanks again for all the great help MKV!

Just talked to a dealer and they told me that I would have to pay tax, title and Detroit assesment, and other fee's???
    What??
What exactly should I expect to pay after getting a quote on a car??
I live in MI and did not expect to pay all these fee's am I being conned?
MKV: you said the S-plan price should be 17,439 for the Mazda 3 with ABS and Moonroof packages. Will dealers go lower than this?? I had one dealer offer me the car for $17300, but I think they may just be trying to get me in to sway me with some other offer. I have another dealer that thinks anything close to 17,000 or 17, 500 is undoable.
A dealer told me they have a $500 rebate until the end of the month on the S-plan, anyone else heard of this?
Also please someone let me know if I can use the Gerber rebate on top of the S-plan price of $17439 or whatever it is?
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Anything other than government-required fees are negotiable and should be included in the out-the-door price quote. If they don't tell you up front about these you have to ask or you will get ripped off.
  • bunk1968bunk1968 Member Posts: 119
I don't want to sound stupid, but Tax and Title are the only government required fee's, right??

Sales tax , title and license (TT&L) are by far the most common - but some places have other taxes. Houston adds on a property tax fee - I think it is around .25% ( .0025) which adds less that $50 to most cars.

I have read some states mandate that if a dealership charges a fee - like advertising or doc fee that they must charge the same fee to all customers.

That does not really mean much - you can always negotiate a lower price on the car - offsetting the fee - so that even though the invoice says $300 DOC FEE you did not really pay it - for example you buy the car for $300 UNDER invoice rather than at invoice.

These fees are always negotiable - ALWAYS - the question is is it worth your time and effort to spend 3 days trying to get a $50 doc fee reduced down to $25?
I gave a co-worker a ride to shop for a car - First he negotiated a deal that was below invoice - then got them to reduce the destination charge - he worked like hell - but ended up getting a great deal on a Nissan.

I tell the sales person - as soon as we start taking about pricing - that - the price I am offering includes all the fees EXCEPT TT&L - and that I also expect that they will do the same. But still about 1/2 the time when I get to closing they have added in something extra - I never pay it - and have only had to walk away from a deal a few times.

    Eligible
Customers: All $500 certificate recipients are on the "In Market Owners" list posted in DealerLink identified by Customer ID.
Owners who receive a $500 certificate in the "In Market Owners" direct communication.
This offer IS transferable within household, must live at same address

This info I found on a dealer's website, located in St. Louis. Anyone have any idea what this is and how to figure out if: a) who is on the list?; and/or b) how to get on the list? The "DealerLink" is the obstacle, it seems.
  • luckyaluckya Member Posts: 3
I ran across the same add somewhere, but to my best understanding you have to be a current Mazda owner buying a second Mazda to qualify.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901

Yup. Unfortunately some dealers try to slip in other fees as "required".

    Hi Guys,

I got my car yesterday from HileyHurst Maxda Dallas.

    I qualified for S-Plan + gerber $500 rebate + grad $500 rebate.

Here are the break up of price:

    15530 (S-Plan Price) +688( sab/abs pkg) +765( sunroof/6cd pkg) +421(sports pkg)+580(dest)-1000( rebates) + Dallas TTL=$18456 ( This is the amount I paid to the dealer) + Free Window Tinting + free full tank gas.

I am quite happy with the deal though I could have saved little bit more
But It was absolutely no haggling at all and the internet manager guy was great.Everything was done over emails and the $1000 rebates was given instantly instead of like Mail In rebate.
Also tax was calculated on rebated price instead of full price.

So basically I paid $18456 for all these.

    Thanks

Thank you for posting this info on the $500 Gerber-sponsored Mazda rebate it worked out great for me.

Now I just need to make up my mind to buy now or wait untill September for the 2006 model.

The 2006 MAZDA3 is a carry-over model, but there are some exciting new
    features for 2006 models including:

-addition of variable valve timing (VVT) to the 2.0L engine
-addition of PZEV (for five states) to the 2.3L engine
-addition of a 5-Speed Sport AT to the 2.3L engine.
-all models with air conditioning also contain a pollen filter and
ambient (outside) temperature display in the center instrument panel.
-all 2.3L models add standard ABS and variable-intermittent front
    wipers.
-the new 2.3L ?s Grand Touring? model (which replaces the successful
05MY Special Edition SP23) contains the SP23 features plus automatic
climate control and a driving information system (trip computer).
-there are two new exterior colors for 2.3L models: Copper Red Mica
(replaces Lava Orange) and Whitewater Pearl Mica (replaces Rally
    White).

I wonder what the chances are of getting a 2005 at invoice? :)

    Thanks!

Does anyone know any info on the June incentives for the Mazda 3?

I wonder if they've made any improvements in the AC system for 2006? If they did, they probably wouldn't advertise it as this would amount to admitting there was a deficiency in the current models.
  • renraw3020renraw3020 Member Posts: 4
Thats what I was hoping for, seeing that the AC will have a pollen filter it makes me wonder if its a new improved version of the AC. I also am curious if it is the 2004's and 2005's that had AC issues. It seens that not everyone has a problem with it but here in Oklahoma it would be big issue for me.

Hmm, I would have thought that the manufacturer was doing a good job by constantly innovating to improve their systems. Call me naive.

arrgg... this is exactly what my old Chevy Prizm had and i loved that car (1.8L VVT = 41mpg hwy).

if they dont fix the a/c issues in my 2005 3i by Feb 2006, i'm trading it in for a 2006 3i (assuming no problems on the 2006 3's).
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
It seems like more 2004 model Mazda3's have AC problems - but a few complaints are starting to show up in the 2005's - I would guess this is a direct result of the temperatures starting to warm up.

I am more concerned about Mazda's complete lack of support for the unlucky customers that ended up with defective AC systems. Letting customers twist in the wind (sounds better that sweat in the heat) seems to be SOP for Mazda.

Can someone tell me if there are any other rebates available besides the Gerber rebate. I would like to know any and all discounts available.
I do own a 1992 Mazda Pick up, but I don't think that would give me any other discounts.
I called Mazda and they told me I could recieve the Gerber rebate and the Splan discount together.

Oh, and can anyone tell me if those black rubber like rear bumper protectors are worth it. I don't know if I would need them, but I was thinking of trying to unload and load my bike in the back of the hatch and thought those might be a good idea. Does anyone know if you can fit a bike in there? Does the moon roof deflecter create more wind noise?
    Thanks.
