BMW and MB have now filled every niche, and are forced to copy each other. The GLE Coupe is aimed at the X6 and its usually ostentatious demographic.

The fastback SUV trend definitely reminds one of the Aztek.

Even Jaguar is jumping into the crossover game.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,597
Got behind a new unregistered Range Rover today. Speeding, poor lane positioning, poor signal use - the French handled this demographic perfectly a while back.

Probably trying to reach the repair shop before flame out.

Saw quite a few RAV4 hybrids this weekend. Also saw (2) new GLE Mercs, non-coupe flavor.

Supposedly there will be an X2 in the BMW camp, so the Coupe-Crossover isn't going away any time soon. I actually really dig the GLE Coupe myself.

Lastly, I spotted (2) new Audi Q7's. European SUV's are really popular around here. Not Honda Pilot or Explorer popular, but they are prevalent.

Not new, but amusing and I don't know where else to put it. Yesterday I saw a previous gen Acura TL, with the beak - this one had a "full Florida" treatment including a very padded cabrio look top with blanked out rear quarters, and chrome wheels. Wacky.

Not new, but rare. First was a jaguar X type wagon, sec it was the Murano cabriolet

Never understood why anyone in his right mind thought a Murano cabriolet was a good idea.

Off road convertible that's a bit more comfy than a Wrangler? Actually thought it'd be good for snow country. High clearance and AWD for pushing through the drifts, and then drop the top in the Spring and Fall. Save a space in your garage.

Yes, but the Jag F-Pace does not appear to be a hunchbacked doorstop bit of ugliness... Plan to go to the New England Auto Show Friday. Maybe NYIAS in April?

Yeah, nothing like mending fences or wild sheep hunting in your Murano cabriolet. Steve, go to your room.

I have thought for some time that an AWD convertible would be a great car to have here in Colorado.

Not many choices available now - Audi A3 or A5 and the Wrangler.

Only thing going for it to me was the decent rear seat room. Any other convertible that could hold 4 adults?

    This could work:

Saw a new style 7er on the road today, without the chrome hockey stick it would be hard to notice.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,597
Saw an i8 on the road today, and a big mouth bass Prius C, likely a rental.

Last week, I saw an i8 and a Fisker Karma within 2 minutes while driving through, wait for it, Puyallup. Definitely a WTH moment.

Maybe. Saw my first Model X today in Mercer Island. White. That makes more sense.

Good sighting, haven't seen one of those Faberge eggs yet. Most remarkable thing I saw today was a Lexus NX that was actually being driven in a mildly lively manner.

Yeah, the white color does nothing to dispel the egg analogy. I was driving with my wife; when I pointed it out to her, she commented about how not special it looked.

That's why I like my blue on my Golf especially with the 17" Joda wheels...have gotten a few comments at gas stations while pumping petrol and even a few at the supermarket. I did consider red for a nano second but it's really red and thought I'd stick out a bit. With the right alloys, the white would look great to. I know on our A3, the white fits it and the nice lines of the vehicle. After having silver vehicles for so long, decided I'd get something totally different, the white was all the dealer had with the options the wife wanted last December. We had a white Cutlass Supreme back in 1985 with a blue vinyl roof and blue interior and come to think of it, I had a '96 white over blue Corolla, so we have done white also. One tends to forget after awhile what vehicles one owned over the years.

Probably the gas pedal jammed in the floor mat :)

Probably the gas pedal jammed in the floor mat :)

That was blamed for this bad valet parking job yesterday:

Good thing there was nobody in the pool. I like how the wipers stayed on the whole time. ;)

Not "Only in a Jeep". I wonder how many mats get blamed for pedal misapplication.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
"blame someone else" isn't that the American way, perhaps furthered along by the huge excess of law school graduates out there. Heck, daytime TV ads seem to be dominated by pharmaceuticals and trial attorney commercials.

Stopped by the MB dealer for a sec while out doing errands. Loaded C450, 63K MSRP, high option
GLE coupe 76K MSRP - I admit the pano is cool in it, E63S with few options for 107K, and blowout lease on 2016 E already - base 4Matic car for something like $450+ tax with I think a few grand up front - there will be deals on these come summer.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,788
I will be keeping an eye out for the GLC 450, but that's probably about it as far as the MB lineup goes these days for me. While an E63 would be appealing, of course, the price is just way out there for my budget.

Is anyone actually buying the GLEs?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,597
Normal GLE is just the new name for the ML - they will sell them by the boatload. GLE coupe is MBs version of the X6, and will sell to a much smaller customer base. I think I have seen maybe 5 on the road so far.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yeah, I meant the GLE coupe. I can't imagine why anyone would want one, nor can I imagine why Benz (or BMW) even builds things like this. Have they all gone "niche-crazy"?
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,144

Yeah, and BMW's the worst niche maker. How many 3/4 series variants are out there? A dozen?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
How ironic that the Germans are trying to replicate the AMC Eagle for $70,000 bucks.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,597
There's a segment of the affluent who like homely brash jerky cars - enter the X6. They are often driven by a specific demographic here. MB saw that BMW is likely earning good margins on those, so they made their own. BMW and MB are trying to out-niche each other, and it has come to the point where they sometimes simply copy each other.

Subaru replicated the AMC Eagle best, for a mere ~30K.

Nah, just showy, and probably lucky at receiving gifts. Their prior car might have been an X6.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Oh, it shows something all right. More dollars than sense.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,597
That sums up a lot of people with a lot of dollars in my area.

Today had a new unplated i3 next to me in the workplace parking garage, and found out the black Ferrari 458 I see now and then is indeed the chariot of the CEO.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Car and Driver summed it up nicely:

"The bobtailed GLE-class is more perplexing than it is attractive. Its athletic stance implies something small and svelte, yet the Mercedes’ footprint approaches that of a Chevy Tahoe,"
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,144
Saw my first new Pilot. Not very distinctive, Edmunds isn't particularly liking theirs.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
It's a modified minivan to me. Unlike the aircraft builders, the stretched version (Odyssey) came first ;)

A new 'smart' car in the lot at work...'smart'? I think not! Just got a terrible rating from CR this month.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,144
I also saw a Macan, not that unusual except I noticed it has a HUGE hood. Wonder why???

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,597
I saw what appeared to be an X4M today - looked like it had the badging, and it was launching with the subtle non-dbaggy 5K off the line jump typical for many M car drivers around here. Also a Kia K-9(00).

I hear they vastly improved the transmission on the Smart car--now it's just pretty awful. To be fair, I haven't driven a brand spankin' new U.S. one, but I did drive the 4-door in Europe recently, and that was a manual transmission. All I can say is it's a bit better than a Fiat 500.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,144
One can get a Fit for about the same money as a 'smart'...let me think.....

i8 with a license plate "FUTURE", a little obnoxious.

    Short road trip, yesterday..

    Tesla Model S

Maserati Coupe . Don't know the model, but it looked like a supercar, coming up from behind.

    Volvo S60 T6 AWD - handsome car.

Speaking for myself, I'd rather have one hour in a vintage BMW 2002Tii than a week in one of those.
