"I've seen 2 Lucernes today, one in black, the other in kind of a silver-gold mix. For a GM product it's not awful looking at all."

To me the Lucrene looks better than the LaCrosse.

was probably the best day for spotting cars! I was on a trip to the mall to check out the Mercedes SL55 AMG and the new Mercedes ML500. The SL55 was in blue, the ML in silver. I'll try to put up pictures later.

Anyway, before we even parked I saw within a 5 minute period 3 exotics!! First a greenish/blue Bentley Continental Flying Spur, then a red Lamborghini Gallardo, and a blue Ferrari 575 Maranello. And right after that a silver Nissan Pathfinder, (my first) and a tricked out red Touareg with an aggressive body kit and huge rims.

After we left I saw a silver Ferrari 360 Modena, C6 Corvette and BMW 750Li.

    WOW!! :shades:

...another new Chevrolet Impala. This one was a dark metallic maroon color.

    I saw another Lucerne today.

No license plate frame, barcode in the back window...

In the local Avis parking lot...

I know it's been out for awhile, but a few weeks ago back in the City of Angels, I saw two Rolls-Royce Phantoms -- one black, one white, both ugly. First time sighting for me.

Saw the pics of the new 7 Series BMW. Much much much better improvement over the current version. And I like it better than the S Class Benz.

This is the second one I have seen. Hands down the best looking sedan in my opinion. Whats the price on one of these, $50k or $60k? Now I just have to start playing the lottery.
  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
Lol, a CLS 500 is more than that. The base price is around $65K, with loaded ones going upto $73K. Not cheap.

It's a shame that North America doesnt get the CLS 350. I see a lot of them in Kuwait. Sure they're less powerful but they would be a lot cheaper, I'm guessing $55K.
  • gussguss Member Posts: 1,167
Wow!, I guess I will always be relegated to a looker .But it sure is a handsome car.
  • anythngbutgmanythngbutgm Member Posts: 4,277
My wifes business partner has one. Some kind of "Designo" edition. That sucker was like 78 grand!

It definitely has a prescence to it. Love it or hate it, it gets noticed.

Saw two of these this morning. Looks better slightly lifted.

Also was followed by a Jetta GLI this morning.

I saw a VW Phaeton motoring down Water St this morning just a couple of blocks south of Wall St. It looked like a CEO type behind the wheel but since he was in the Phaeton instead of a 750 or A8, I guess that he was probably just a COO. I speak in jest. That is a nice car and huge.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
VW's gonna can it. Great car, wrong badge to put on it. It probably only hurt the Audi A8.

I'm not sure much can hurt the A8... It's pretty awesome, definitely the looker of the Germanic big luxe trio. It has a nice jump on the aging s class and controversial 7 in New york at least at the moment, I see more of them everyday.
The problem with the phaeton was that it pretty much was an A8. There are some differences to be sure but I don't like it when GM rebadges cadillacs as buicks, or chevys either. You have to have more distinctive products. If you could have a phaeton or an A8 you would go for the audi every time based on looks, heritage, status, etc...(price not a consideration, I hear second hand phaetons are among the best car deals in the world right now)
Personally though I was never that put off by the "high end VW" oxymoron thing. All car companies are going into new segments, the historical stratification means less and less. Judging by how the market is going now In 5-10 years we will have a Korean Lexus equivalent and won't find it odd at all.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...a larger Korean domestic market car called the Equus.

And a heavier steel-bodied one, as opposed to Aluminum, at that.

I heard they were discounted heavily, some sold for under $50k. If residuals are weak, you might be able to pick up a used one for $25k in just a couple of years.

I'd still be worried about the complexity of it all.

The Amanti and Azera are almost there.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Comes closer, very nice interior. I saw this and the new Accent debut at the NY show, and the Azera is soooooo much nicer that it's hard to believe the same company manufactures both.

1 white Ford Fusion(wasn't sure if it had a new dealer tag on it or not), 1 Black Mazda 3, 1 Explorer, 1 Jetta in steel grey, and 1 Honda CR-V.

my friend wanted to celebrate his birthday so he invited me and a few buddies on a limo. It was a white Cadillac Escalade on chrome dubs, and it was incredibly long about 30 feet I'd say. We saw plenty of new cars, like Hummer H3s, Toyota Avalons, Hyundai Sonatas 3 Ferrari 360 Modenas and even a Hummer H2 limo.

However the best car that night was my first Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG, in white. This car looks amazing in person, better than the pictures. The engine sounds so powerful and sonorous. I was the only one out of my buddies who wanted to be in the SL rather than the limo.

Beautiful car, 604hp, 0-60 in 4.2secs. 738lb.ft twin turbo V12, and $180,000. If only it were attainable. (Sigh) ;)

I saw one of the new big Mercedes SUVs. It looked really good.

I don't think they are for sale yet, but since I am in the only big city near the headquarters of MB, it isn't unusual to see preproduction stuff.

I saw a new Tahoe on the road. The commericals say they aren't available to Jan 10, but this one had dealer plates.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
Today I saw an R-class on the road...black and dirty. I saw a couple of SL 55 (can't tell if they are brand new), a DB9, and a current style Viper.

I pulled up to a big intersection, and among the older Camcords (this is an area where cars last, and domestic passenger cars are not popular), there were 2 06 Civics and an 06 Accord.

How far away from Tuscaloosa are you?

    http://www.autoweek.com/files/specials/2006_detroit/benz/glclass/pages/01.htm

The SUV you saw was probably the new GL class. Check out the pictures. I like the styling of this new vehicle.
  • merc1merc1 Member Posts: 6,081
A lot of people can't stand the look of the R-Class, what do you think?

  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
That is it. I am only about 45 minutes from the Mercedes plant. Tuscaloosa is about 10 minutes on the other side of it.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...of a 2006 Chevrolet Impala SS. This one was black. Also seen: red Pontiac Torrent.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,335
saw a new R class (the wagon thingee) the other day, and shortly after that a new ML. Didn't look that much different.

The ML did look like a Kia. The R class? Kinda odd looking in person. I am not a fan of the droopy toward the tail look, and it has some odd curves and funky proportions. Just not attractive to me, and looks too long for the design (like it was taffy pulled).

To me, looked liked they probably compromised utility (people and cargo room) for style for styles sake, and not good style at that.

I think "Pacifica" when I see it. I suppose it's not terrible, but it's not something I want.
  • gussguss Member Posts: 1,167
I saw my first coupe the other day. Way nicer than the sedan, and I like the sedan.

In the parking lot at the grocery store, I spotted a G6 GTP, that is another sharp coupe! Pontiac seems to be getting their act together.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,412
Just came in dead last in the C & D comparison so maybe Pontiac isn't quite all the way back.
  • anythngbutgmanythngbutgm Member Posts: 4,277
That thing represents all that is still wrong in the world of GM. For 28 grand, the materials and assembly shouldn't mimic the defunct Cavalier...

Spotted to new ML500's, a Fusion and an 06'RAV4 over the weekend. Like others have mentioned, the Civic (No Si yet) is a'plenty around here as are refreshened Accords. Couple of restyled Pilots as well. Good showing from Honda here in Mass. :D
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
Well from a styling prespective at least they are out of the 90's overstyling of cars and putting cladding on their cars.
  • teds1teds1 Member Posts: 180
I saw a zephyr, which I quite disliked. The rear looks like some half baked concept car that should was designed to show off some engine feature (rendering the styling superflous). Just an ungainly looking thing, and I didn't get the sense of luxury at all.

I saw a new impala, 06 accord, civic coupe, and a BMW 3 series wagon as well. The wagon looks great. I drove the last version extensively and I can assure you it was one of the worst buys they had in the line up the 325xi with the extra weight of awd but no 30.0 liter engine (so as not to interfre with X5 sales... and then they introduced the X3 for some reason!) It was heavy slow and fishtailed easily. Hope this one is better.

The real beauty was a black DB9 this morning. There is no doubt that this is THE BEST LOOKING CAR ON THE ROAD when you see one in person. There really isn't a discussion here, it is not up for debate any more. Especially when he peeled out and the V12 screamed down park avenue echoing on the buildings.

I also passed a porsche dealer (cheating I know) that had a cayman in the window (as well as a carrera GT) just got a glimpse but it looked sweet.

I saw a Cobalt SS in a light, strong blue with an air dam on the rear. It had a fart can type muffler that didn't have the tinny, I'm a little engine, twang to it. It had a deeper bump sound.

Was it the coupe or sedan?
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,674
A coupe. And it was pretty. It fit right in with the crowd of Hondas and others that the youths tinker and tool up. But it actually sounded better than most did because of the pitch of the exhaust loud can.

I'll check the local K-Mart lot Friday/Saturday eve to see if it is among the cars that hang out there like a modern car cruise-in. Personally I like the cars that show up at Steak-n-Shake but they don't do that when it's cold.

Dropped into the Toyota dealer and looked at the new RAV4. Not the compact SUV anymore that it once used to be.

Saw two Bentely Continental GTs, one silver, one gold on the weekend in the rain.

On Friday we brought in a black MB CL55 AMG for a client who traded in an 05 BMW 5 series. I love the looks of the CL Benzes, absolutely stunning.

And the best one was that finally after two plus months of wheeling, dealing, and negotiating, I managed to finish the deal for my customer who wanted to trade in his 2003 SL55 AMG for a Odyssey Touring.

After it was all done I hopped in the SL and toyed around with all the switches, and the retractable hard top. Neat car I shall say.

Yeah, I saw that too, but at least now they are in the comparison.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
I saw another Lucerne today...this one was kind of a light gold color, and had sporty-ish looking multispoke wheels. It must have been a higher model, and it actually was a private car.

boomcheck, do you know if Vancouver metro area is still a leader in NA for MB sales, either per capita or total? Only there would someone trade in a SL55 on a minivan. I do like the CL cars too.

A black Mazda 6, A white Civic Sedan, A light green Pontiac G6, and a black Lincoln Town Car. Oh yeah, seen a BMX X3 or X5 today too.

Oh yeah I forgot to note a couple weeks ago I saw 3 Chevy Tahoe's or GMC Yukon's in a span of 5 minutes.

    My first Solstice.. silver..

It could have been the young lady that was driving, but my first thought was how low she was sitting in the car...the only thing you could see over the doorsill was her head..

I saw a Solstice a week or two ago, it was a promo car (with top down, it was about 20 degrees out that day), Pontiac was signing people up to win one and giving away free stocking caps (can't GM just introduce a car IN SEASON, just once?), outside Daley Center in downtown Chicago. Haven't heard if I won the car (guess that means 'no'), but did get my cap, at least.

I went to watch Fun with Dick and Jane, and on the way to the theatre a yellow Porsche Carrera GT and a blue Aston Martin DB9 zoomed by us. They seemed to be racing. When we finally pulled upto them at a stoplight the Porsche left a lot of space between him and the car in front. When the light became green, he just blasted away with a lot of noise and it was amazing to see just how fast this superar could accelerate.

After we finished watching the movie, 3 hours after we first saw the car, we saw him again on the same road! Lol, he must have been cruising up and down showing off...

Also spotted today a red Murcielago convertible and a blue Maserati Quattroporte.

Gets to see Maseratis and Aston Martin's and I get to see a New Impala with a landau roof.It was silver with a black roof.

And before you ask, yes the guy driving was about eighty.
