A decent compromise is the Alaska State Ferry System. It takes you to or near many of the places the cruise ships go, but in the company of normal people who are just going from point A to point B. Food's decent, and it's possible to get a ticket that allows on/off at the various stops. None of the cruise ship, let's say, demographic. And, if you're that way inclined, you can take your car.

Took the Volt on a short trip to the LA area for a reunion. God the traffic is awful there. We were able to recharge the Volt in a public garage during the main dinner, and topped off with a couple of gallons of gas the next day to get back home again. Sent all the addresses for various parties to the Nav system via my phone, which worked flawlessly. Great trip!

@qbrozen - from what others are saying here, sounds like there are many alternatives to seeing Alaska if a cruise isn't your thing. From my recent experience, I'd certainly recommend it. I'm sure these other tours could get you more into the Alaska experience, much moreso than a traditional cruise anyway.

@Marcothecarguy1986 - we didn't check out any other car lots yesterday, but we did spend most of this afternoon roaming lots. Best thing we saw - the new Volvo V90 XC. That is one beautiful wagon. It was nice to see that the dealer had several of them on the lot. I also took a closer look at the VW Atlas - it's growing on me a bit. And the new Tiguan is handsome as well.

anyone do any car looking this weekand?

Went to look at the 2011 Mustang GT I found a few weeks ago. It looks nice in person, but was completely wet from the rain. I need to figure out whether the lien release on the Murano has been electronically transmitted so I can start trying to sell it...

getting real interested in wandering up to the Acura dealer to see how badly they want to move one of the remaining 2017 V6 tech package cars. The one I test drove at still has maybe 1/2 dozen or so. Not my preferred color, but they have a couple of black over grayscale (I like the interior, can live with exterior). Wouldn't hurt to take one for a spin, and see what they could put together for an early bail (2 payments left) of the Sonata, as long as they would take it in trade. My guess, numbers I still would not like, but only way to know for sure, is to go ask.

Doubtful they would take it on trade. More likely they would work those 2 remaining payments into your deal and have you drop it at the nearest Hyundai dealer with a check.

The VW Atlas seems like a nice vehicle. I don't think they are selling, I've only seen one and live in a pretty busy area.

Fully loaded, it comes in under 50 which in the segment is pretty good.

They were closed on Sunday so I didn't get to drive, but got to look at it without a salesperson hassling me.

I get the USPS Informed Delivery notifications, and it looks like I'm getting something from the credit union today. Hopefully a lien release letter. If I go drive the Mustang and like it, I may just see what they will offer for the Murano.

You took some beautiful photos of breathtaking scenery. Alaska is on my radar as well to get to one of these days. I was just talking to my Uncle this weekend. He's traveled all over the place (and likes cruising in general) and said the cruise to Alaska was hands down his favorite vacation ever.

I think I have mentioned this before, but we did an Alaskan cruise up the inside passage round-trip out of Seattle the Summer after we moved here. The only downside is that you end up with more at-sea time because you're traveling from Seattle vs. say, Vancouver. There are also lots of discounts with the various lines (particularly Holland who has it's HQ here) for local residents.

We loved the experience and are talking about doing it again next summer.

Could be. That's what the Audi dealer was doing for my son to get him out of the Jetta a few months early. Only 2 payments left so not a huge deal. Especially if I can't avoid the disposition fee.

I received a call Saturday afternoon from my dealer saying they are running a program to take my current car off my hands with no negative equity from my remaining 2 payments rolled into the new lease. I verified with our hosts there is no such program from Audi so it sounds dealer driven and those payments need to go somewhere, likely an inflated MF, acquisition fee, or less of a discount. The 2nd to last payment comes out this Friday so I'm not opposed to letting the lease ride out at this point and informed them of that this morning and also wouldn't commit to another Audi either. Of course my salesman said they are expecting their first 2018 A4 6 speed in September and the timing might work out to be perfect for me.

Was at our Honda location today and sat in the new Civic SI they had on the showroom floor, a dark gray color/black interior. Outstanding seats, something I could get used to in like 2 minutes! The sticker was like $24K and change but the added sticker came out to $29K and change. I thought my eyes were failing me but nope, I saw what I saw. Is this normal pricing for one of these puppies??? Think I'd settle for the Civic hatch with all the goodies. Saw a new CR-H and am still drawn to these for some odd reason. The knobless infotainment center is a no go for me and the lack of power is something I could not live with. I know it's based on the Fit but why can't they put the Civic's 1.8t engine under the hood and call it a day!
Also saw a new Encore while at the Buick store and liking these more and more. A bit more sedate than a GTI which is also calling me. Still like a 4 door hatch and right now, only the 320i or 328i are the only sedans I'd consider if I were to go the sedan route. Like that the Buick also has the 4/50K like the wife's Audi...getting closer to 36K on mine and not looking forward to being without any warranty to be honest. Am thinking very hard about if I want to keep it as long as I thought to be honest as I've been under warranty since December of 2013 and have gotten used to that security blanket to be honest! Maybe I shoulda gone for the extended warranty after all but that $100 deductible each time I used it plus the expense of the warranty itself made me pass on the whole thing. Now, not so sure!!! But, love the vehicle and don't want to flip out of it, truth be told. I just don't feel that lucky anymore!

looks like no new car this week. Heard back from Acura salesaldy, and she said they are down to 1 V6 TLX, and that is the GT so a lot higher MSRP. Showed 6 in stock, so not sure if they are just behind, or she meant one left (of 2 online) without a black interior. In any case, was a long shot. So, will wait until fall and check out the 2018. At least I could get a color I like.

There are different options for deductible $ amounts. You can also take the car in with multiple problems for a single $100 deductible. You don't have to pay the deductible for each issue if you do it this way.

@stickguy sorry to hear was looking fored to hearing an new car story! but that is ok! yes when the 2018s do come out like you said adleast you will be able to chose the color you want and not settle! witch you should never do when it comes to an new car! or in the mean time go and test drive an bunch of stuff! you never no sumthing elce might ketch your eye and you will have an new car sooner!
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,347
I don't recall any add on sticker when I looked at and test drove an Si. Just the usual one they put on every car (stripes, mats, mop and glo). Now the R model, they had about $5k add to it.

The seats on an Si are way better than the base car. I would be fine with the Si seats, but not the non power cloth ones in the lower trim cars (EX and down).

the Si is a blast to drive too, as long as you don't mind driving a stick, since no AT available.

When I had my 93 Taurus (3.8), I'd always wait for two things to break before taking it in so I didn't pay two deductibles. Usually that only meant an extra few days before scheduling an appointment. That was such a bad car! That extended warranty was worth it!

From what I can tell, most dealers are backing quickly off any additional markup on the Civic Si. I think they thought they could catch those who want the Type R but couldn't wait. But there's a steady stream of Si's coming into the dealers (unlike the Type R).

The dealership I visited this past Saturday was upfront with straight up MSRP with no additional fees or forced accessories. They even said they expected modest discounts within a couple months.

And if you like the seats in the Si, you'll love the ones in the Type R. When I finally got to sit in one a few weeks ago, that was a major factor selling me on it.

BTW, while on a desolate four-lane highway, I found out yesterday that, if you floor it on a wet road, the stability control on the Tahoe will actually let you get it a decent bit sideways before it intervenes. Of course, I could have controlled the situation myself by letting off the gas, but I was a little surprised the nannies didn't kick in earlier!

daughter must have been doing some research started pinging me with questions about the new 2018 Elantra value edition. Not a bad package actually. Sticker right at 21K, and includes moonroof, blind spot, proximity key, and heated seats. Already showing some pretty big discounts. Not a bad package if you want some goodies on a low budget, and don't care about having a hot rod (she keeps harping on the "is it slow?" factor).

she has become a lease maven. Depending on what we are looking at, she sets a payment amount and asks if it can be done. She doesn't want to pay more than the payment on the Jetta ($225/mo). But would prefer 200. For the Elantra, she set it at $175. Then harped on if it was fast?

she actually likes one of my latest scams schemes ideas. I get a lease on a TLX, and if the residual makes sense, when the lease is over she buys it out. She would need to get a ST lease (or buy) on something cheap to cover her first 30 months, then when that is up, she should have student loans paid off, and will be ready to "upgrade".

Not a bad package if you want some goodies on a low budget, and don't care about having a hot rod (she keeps harping on the "is it slow?" factor). http://www.burnshyundai.com/VehicleDetails/new-2018-Hyundai-Elantra-Value_Edition-Marlton-NJ/3040131953
I've seen some folks hack these down to $88 a month with zero down. A lot of car for the money.
Not sure I believe those folks.
