@stickguy - that's an incredible ownership cost on the Elantra! I'm envious! ' I did get a quote from Carvana on the Macan - it was exactly the same as offered everywhere else (Tesla, Audi, my Broker, etc.).
I’d expect that your Macan depreciation won’t kill you in the short time you’ve owned it.  I know it’s hard, especially for your wife who seems to be very picky when it comes to her vehicles.  You know you are doing the right thing.  Besides, who are we to talk you out of punching your card?

@stickguy - That G70 must be pretty impressive for your son to give up his S3 fetish he’s had for the last 2 years since he bought the A3.  And kudos to you for raising a kid that can afford to trade in his A3 on a G70 2 years out of school while living on his own.

Breld, thanks. the fact that I was skating along on minimal depreciation played a big part in pulling the trigger early. Because, why the heck not! Pretty sure I was not going to go with the 10 year ownership option, so had to happen eventually anyway. Hopefully another sedan was the right move, but I think it will work out nicely.

the RDX just ticked over 50,000 miles this week too, so not exactly worn out.

heard from the kid. He negotiated to a deal he was good with, and pulled the trigger. turns out the dealer is closed from Saturday-Tuesday (hey, it's out in the sticks) so he will go back next Friday to pick it up. he still needs to get his regular wheels/tires put back on it anyway. The Audi took a depreciation hit, but he knew he was not keeping that long enough for that to even out anyway. Plus he just wanted a new car!

one bonus, he figured out he should save about $1,000 on maintenance on the Audi (probably includes a DSG service) during the lease term, and Genesis includes maintenance.

black over black. Ideally he would have gone with bright blue over gray, but they had this one to deal on, and it was one of the colors he was considering anyway. The S3 he was originally chasing after was black too.

from what he relayed of the test drive, the car is amazing. Said the interior was gorgeous, and tremendous power. So he was very impressed. Loaded with features too of course.

he is very excited of course. Probably bummed he won't have it for this weekend but not a big deal.

and yes, he is leasing this time.

Bradd, he is actually going to be out for 6 years already in June. So he had some time to move up the ladder. He is doing well though. Being an engineer dealing with semi-conductor research is not a bad way to make a living! Plus, cheap apartment (relatively) and no kids, so nothing else to spend it on.

His payments are actually going down by about $80/month, though he did have some money DAS.

i might tomorrow, if not end of January. Probably better I don't because it might lead to immediate buyers remorse! Though no way I would have gotten the V6 and there is not as big a difference with the 2.0T, which still would have cost a lot more.

pretty sure the wife will like the Acura better anyway.

Stick guy very nice so you and your son both got new cars before the end of the year, that’s awesome. I’m crazy about the color combo that he got personally, but hey to each his own, as long as he’s happy that’s awesome. Some bad news guys got laid off from work today me and 19 other people. It will all be good it is what it is that’s life for you, have to stay positive, and do what I have to do every day. I thought the company was turning around from what he told us two or three weeks ago, but not the case. The probably way off the remaining people soon enough.

That's kinda funny - I sent my wife a link to some pictures from that same dealership's website, since they seem to have nice "real" photos of the car. I wasn't trying to make things any more challenging, especially since we're set to close on the A5 tomorrow, but I just wanted her to know that if she really craved the additional horsepower and a sportier ride, the G70 was an option.

one thing with the G70 (not an issue for my son, but could be for us, and might be for you) is that the back seat is kinda tight. Though your stepson might like that.

Compared to an A3 though, probably like a limo.

Yeah - I do think a tight backseat, counterintuitively, would work well for my stepson.

But, I think she's much more comfortable going with a more known quantity at this point with the Audi. Can't say I blame her.

I know the Camry is a lot larger but just like the way it looks and the way it drives. And in any other garage than the one we have, it'll fit on either side. Just starting to even thinking of buying something new so a big step here. Thought I'd have to pull the trigger last March after the accident, but Safeco decided to fix it instead, so buying new was out. Now, just looking like we all do in here. Just that I don't pull the trigger that often and I want to like what I drive. The Golf I like, really like, and nothing else to match it right now in the mid $20K segment. The new Toyota Corolla hatchback is so new, no one has any to sell from what I've seen. But that one really has my interest to be honest. Just hope it drives as nicely as the Golf does or why bother. So far, it's behaving with about 48K on the clock. New battery, it's 3rd, and new headlamps have been the only out of pocket costs this year so I'm happy with that.
Probably wait till I get to 70K to really look for a replacement vehicle. By then I should be in total retirement so will be driving less.

What I would not like about the Camry after driving something like the Golf is the maneuverability. I love being able to zip in and out of small spaces, and it seems you do too. I’d drive it a good while before committing.

Any of you still thinking of making a purchase before the end of the year, the Kia Store that's been emailing me sent pics of the one they're offering for $38,720. I'm out of the running. But, if you guys want to get serious, I think it's a helluva deal on a helluva car......

RB...good point. They must have been burned on the trade of the Stinger, given I can buy a brand spanking new one for thousands less than the used one they’re offering.

well, looks like that my having the newest car in the family might last about 4 days. been chatting with my son. He stopped at the Genesis dealer and tried out a G70 3.3T. he fell madly in love, and it appears he is going to pull the trigger. Trading in his A3 on a black over black 3.3T with everything but the sport package. Elite and the other fancy stuff package.

not sure if he will actually be getting it tonight or picking it up next week. He is up in NY and leaving early tomorrow morning to come down here for a few days. So might be going back over Monday morning to get it. Nice little Xmas present for himself!

They are impressive cars on a test drive....for certain. I’ll assume the G70 drives similarly to the Stinger. Still want to get behind the wheel to test drive to do a compare/contrast between the G70 and the Stinger.

Good for your son. We’re going to need pics.

question for the experts. If you add an accessory at time of purchase, that should get residualized, right?

so say car is MSRP $20,000, sale price $17,000, 50% residual. Residual obviously is $10,000, depreciation $7,000, so payments 7,000/36 (well, that portion of it).

now, say you want a dealer installed accessory that costs $1,000. Shouldn't that be added to MSRP and SP? Making them 21,000 and 18,000, and residual 10,500, and depreciation 7,500/36?

so doing the math, without the add on looking at $194.44, and with it $208.36, so roughly $14/month ($504 total).

obviously I want to add something when the deal gets done that the dealer has to install, but it seems to me that since it comes with the car and will stay on the car, I should only pay the depreciation part like with the rest of the car.

It really depends, but my experience is that dealer installed accessories will frequently not residualize. Usually only port installed accessories where they re-print the window sticker.

In the simplest terms my understanding is if it's not listed on the window sticker it would not be residualized. Our hosts or others may know differently though.

well, that is just suckerdoodles. Guess I just need to ask the finance guy when I get there. Really seems like they should be though.

so anything they throw on a side sticker (typical pack stuff I guess like pin stripes, mats, wheel locks) should in theory be charged at full freight too?

Pricing out the G70, it seems you're just about getting the 6 cylinder for the price of the 4 cylinder in the German competition. Not a bad deal, given the praise heaped on the engine by the car mags (and considering they seem to feel the 4 cylinder could use a little more seasoning).

I'm anxious to see one in person. From the pictures, it looks so much like an Infiniti Q50 (not necessarily a bad thing), but I'm assuming it's a bit more distinctive than that.

In general, I like the look of the Stinger, but up close it seems a tad ungainly and a bit overstylized. Seems the G70 is more restrained, though I'm withholding judgment on that accent just behind the front fender.

Correct - which is why when people see a Honda online at one MSRP, then find out it includes $2500 worth of crap accessories, they get annoyed.

I ignore whatever accessories a dealer puts on a car - not my problem and not my issue how they charge for them. My offer stays the same. If you negotiated a deal for a car and it comes with $2500 worth of crap as part of the dealer trade, your price should not change.

If you add dealer installed accessories, you will be responsible for either adding it to the base sale price (MSRP won't change) which will up your lease payment, or you can pay for them upfront.

Sometimes, big accessories can be residualized, somewhat. (aka Hard Adds).

It almost always has to be something attached.

For instance, on a Pilot, Honda will residualize dealer installed running board or backup sensors. Assuming they aren't already standard equipment on that particular trim. Of course, the residualized amount is probably far less than what the dealer is charging, so you are still paying a much larger portion of it, than with the rest of the car.

Other accessories like mats and mudguards... nope.

Here’s a couple from our garage. It’s pretty crappy out today. Tomorrow is to be better so I’ll snap a few then.

We’re happy with it. It’s a 2019 Limited model. Eyesight is impressive and the value for the money is strong. Its a bit pokey off the line but you don’t notice it once you are underway. We just took a quick trip up the highway and it cruised fine at 70+.
