In the process of helping a friend finally replace his Tucson (I don't think I have the model right. Santa Fe maybe??) with nearly 200k miles. He (via his wife's influence) wants a 3-row SUV with relatively decent fuel mileage, somewhat lux'ed up, and lightly used. In my searching, I came by some rather shockingly low-priced QX60s. A dealer just across the border in PA has a number of CPO 2019s for under $30k. I also pointed him to a 2019 Explorer Ltd and 2019 Enclave, each priced at $30k. He wasn't impressed with the Highlander nor Pilot, not surprisingly. I'll also send an MDX, but gotta go down to a 2017 to match those prices. Am I missing anything at this point?

Higher trimmed Traverse? Otherwise for the budget I think you hit all the best options.

Explorer is considered higher end than Traverse / Acadia by the country club set. If he’s replacing a miled up Hyundai, that might not matter.

CX9 just occurred to me. A bit pricey for 2019, but I did find a CPO 2016 with only 20k miles near us for $25k. It is a Touring with the 2.5T.

Got the door edge guards put on the Accent, clear ones, and they look great. It was raining Monday so I didn't take a test drive of the new Venue yet. Love the size, they have a Denim Edition, my personal favorite but held off. Was just afraid I'd like it so much I would've pulled the trigger too soon. Sill need to try the Kia Sotlis, the new 2020 VW Golf and the 2020 Honda HR-V to see where they each stand on drive ability and how the interiors work for me with the different infotainment centers plus how good the audio systems will be. Have read that the Kia should get a Bose system which interests me. Also want to see if the Golf gets the Beats audio that the Jetta has gotten. Love my music and like it loud, at times. So the whole audio package must be, well...that good! On this, I will not settle. I really won't settle on anything that I want in my new rig and am willing to up the budget a bit to get it all!
Might sound a bit stupid to want it just perfect but at this stage of my life, I no longer want to settle on something I'll probably use daily. So will not compromise one iota or I'll just keep what I've got because I still like it, it's still a "9" on my "1 to 10 scale". And that's pretty damn good after over 5 years of ownership, an accident and 62K miles on the odo. But deep down, want something a bit nicer with better sound and more of that "fun to drive quotent" that I'll know after I get behind the wheel. Felt it within minutes with my Golf and know it's still ot there, waiting in my short list!
So baby, bring it on because dad is so ready!!

QB, maybe a Hyundai Santa Fe. The V6 3 row, now called the XL (was just Santa Fe when the smaller one was the SF sport).

was helping a friend shop today (old car died unexpectedly yesterday) and stumbled upon this one. I like it, a lot. pretty reasonable price. Would be fine to put the wife in for 2 years then I could take it over when the TLX goes back.

I don't know if you got Mrs. j's 2018 Legacy that she got in April.

FWIW, I have bad news for 2020. I have already been told I will not be getting anything this year and maybe never. She knows nothing about cars but knows that since my '15 Genny just turned 10K miles and given my age, I should never need another car. If you want to know how she knows that, she was told by the girls in her swimming aerobics class that cars today can go 200K miles with no problems. This is my reward for allowing her to leave the house. :'(

Uh, a Baruth hit piece from 18 months ago on TTAC? Your new year is off to a bad start. :open_mouth:

The error in the original response to the question was lumping Chevrolet and GMC together as one. The brand perception and perceived prestige is very different. For example, I likely would not buy a Traverse, but an Acadia could be a different story. For whatever reason, GMC is perceived quite differently than Chevrolet in the SUV/truck segment.

Going out test driving again, today. A new Genesis dealership (in the old Hyundai dealership) just opened up nearer to me than the other one in Cincinnati I visited. Might boogie on over to the Volvo and Benz dealerships, too. They’re right across the street from each other. Got a gift card for jags.com which is close to the Volvo and Benz dealerships. Good steak and seafood joint. Probably finish up there.

Hope it is a big gift card!
It was a $50 card. Covered about ½ the bill. It had been awhile since I was there. Great steaks, and great food/service in general. Sat at the bar to eat. Had a nice time.

    Cars driven....

2019 Mercedes C300 and E300. Pretty cars...quite nice inside. Pretty leisurely insulated type of drive. That’s not a bad thing. Just typical of lux vehicles. I understand the appeal and why some here love Mercedes. Just not my cup of tea.

Genesis G70 2.0t. Pretty darned sprightly given it has the same size turbo motor as the Mercedes. Handled much better, too. Still, hard to forget the drive in the Stinger GT or G70 3.3. Nicely appointed with nice materials. Genesis still has the same problem that has been plaguing them since they decided to be desperate from Hyundai. Good luck finding a dealership with much in the way of stock, or staff that is still stuck in the “high pressure” Hyundai type of process. If they ever get their act together, they have a great product.

Volvo S60....really nice car. Drove a T5 Momentum. Interior was quite nice. Little gruff drivetrain and relatively tepid performance. Drove an Inscription, too. Much better performance. But, about $10K more than the Momentum.

All-in-all, a fun day! The push to make a deal before the end of the year was very palpable at all the dealerships.

You can step up from a T5 Momentum to an AWD T6 Momentum for just $4k.
Thanks, Q! I’ll be paying them another visit when I’m ready to pull the trigger on something. I really liked the S60. Just want a more powerful power plant.

Every time I get a weak moment and try that all it gets me is another lap around the dining room table. :'( However, all things considered along those lines, 2019 was a pretty good year. I think I logged in less table lap time in 2019 than I had in years. However, I believe the real reason for that was all the time away from home I spent helping Son #1 with his flip house; not so much mouth control. In any case, I'll take it anyway I can get it. So do me a favor and don't go trying to pump me up for more lap time this year, OK. :@

You have a Happy New Year too.

Happy New Year's all! This is the 6th NYE in a row that I did not buy a new car. I'm not proud of that, I just had to share.
But, the XF soldiers on, annual oil change/tire rotation completed. State inspection in Feb. next. Multiple inspections by my local garage note that all is well, still a solid car with newer tires and brakes. Steering wheel is groaning occasionally though, when moving in the ingress/egress function. That must be a sign...

I went to the store with the wife so swung through the automall on the way home, intending to scope out an X3. got there about 1:30, and they appeared open, but salespeople were moving cars in front of all the entrances into the lot. so kinda odd to be open at all if they were closing that early. So there loss! will have to swing back this weekend (wife even mentioned that!)

I had no luck sending her links to nice, affordable, low mileage 2018s. those apparently are "old cars".

Unless there are unplanned incidents, no punches coming for me this year, that's for sure. I don't even know anyone in the market right now. Closest might be if my mom upgrades and gives my brother the Camry (would that count as 2?) but I suspect she'll keep it for at least a couple more years.

roadburner is the winner with a guess of 40. @Michaell and @kyfdx, why don't you tell him what he's won?!?

No 2019 punches for me, either.

    Any predictions for 2020?

    The prize is: Bragging rights

38 for 2020 is my guess

I'll go with 35 for 2020. None on my horizon...

BTW, @breld is always looking. Got a link from him earlier today on something he spotted.

    I miss having a stick.

Should we tentatively put you down for a punch in 2020?

    I miss having a stick.

Dude, it's OK. I'm still here for you.

I miss having a stick too though. Especially embarrassing since my name is not "automaticguy". Part of my long range plan. step one, get wife into a nice fancy new car that will become our go everywhere car. Step 2, turn the lease back in on the TLX. Step 3, profit get myself something interesting, with a stick. Either a toy (like the Prelude boys have) and an inexpensive DD, or a real car that could be a stick. The 2 for 1 option sounds good though!

    I have 5 cars for 2 drivers. :b

Speaking of which...kind of... does anybody else have a recurring dream where you own so many vehicles that you forget what you have and fail to drive them enough that they start to rot away? Mine usually includes an old CJ and and an early 6-cyl ‘70s American coupe of some sort.
