At work, prefer the Ford F-150's to the Silverado any day of the week. They just drive better. Even in the 13 pack's we use now, everyone wants the Transit 250 over the Chevy model. Unfortunately, my lead doesn't get there early to claim on of the Ford vans. Some of the other leads get there super early to get the Ford van in their minds, "is theirs"! A bit unfair as management should decide who drives what but they stay out of it. Had this same mentality when I worked with the drivers at that West Palm Beach company back many years ago. Drivers would see our vehicles lined up and actually run to the particular one they wanted! I just had to laugh because after awhile, a vehicle is just a vehicle but these guys had to run to get what they wanted anyways. Work is really slow right now as not that many are flying again. Those folks who stayed out too long to get as much unemployment as they could screwed themselves because they haven't been asked back yet as right now, we have more than enough drivers. Very glad I texted my boss once I heard we were up & running to find out when I could return. Sure, the unemployment was so nice to get but, I wanted my job back. I like it & it's fun. A bit different due to the Covid-19 protocols, but we're making lemonade out of lemons here. One last note, we dodged another bullet with Laura and I hope wherever it lands, those folks are safe and have minimal damage. We lost power Friday night for a good hour and it brought back bad memories of 2005 and losing it for days after a hurricane. It ain't no fun to be in a hot house with no power, no a/c and all the food in the fridge/freezer ruined! Good luck to our friends in the Gulf Coast states!
Interesting note on trucks. Don’t start a Ram truck and then close the door with it running. One of our guys did that today and the doors locked...with him outside. We had to tell the young rental agent and the look on his face was priceless.
To his credit, while they were waiting for someone to come with a slim Jim he noticed the rear slider was open.he shimmied halfway through with a broom stick and opened it.
I agree the Transits are better than the Chevy vans. I was chase driver (lead driver) and the Ford was much more comfortable than the Chevy we rode in last week.
On unemployment, NY is still giving me half of my UI. Up here they deduct 25% for every day you work or are unavailable to work. This also means I will be eligible for the next federal pandemic payment which in my state will be $300/wk. I even told them I was back to work but they don’t seem to care.

Still haven't committed to anything right now. My first choice, the Encore GX, was just a bit too big for my needs. The regular Encore drove nicely but the model I would've gotten didn't have the sun/moon roof or the Bose audio system, my #1 requirement. It did have the safety nannies option on it and I do want that also. Had the 18" alloys which looked nice but don't really want to go up in size. No more 0% financing either, which sucks. To get the Bose, I'd need to go up in models and price but hated the alloys on it. Didn't ask about swapping out the wheels from the lower model as we didn't get that far in the sales office. It does have a smaller turbo than my Golf but didn't really feel that momentary turbo lag either when pulling away from a light. But, it also accelerated a bit slower than my 1.8 turbo engine so I guess there's got to be some give and take. My friend at work kinda summed it up when he told me to just wait till the new GTI comes out and go for that. From the pics I've seen, it looks great on the outside and the new interior is a real step up from what I've got now. Guessing it'll also have the nicer audio equipment and those special cloth seats. Maybe waiting till then is the answer here, fix the current Golf and keep it in the fleet for the time being. And I think my lack of wanting to do anything is a sign, a positive one, that I just think it the way to go. Hit 64.5K on it last night on the way home which really isn't that many miles. It's got great new rubber not even a year old and probably should just fix the axle boot and get the front brakes done and that's it. Maybe a new air and cabin filter for good measure and keep her. Factoring in that I drive it so little now, just think it's best to keep her at least another year and re-evaluate then. And the other half definitely agrees. Should just take some of those funds and buy some Apple stock and hold it in my portfolio!
You know, having driven a Jetta last week I don’t think a VW owner would be satisfied with the feel of other brands. It’s hard to put in words but the handling and ride characteristics are unique to those cars. You’ll lose nothing by waiting a couple of months anyway because the market is so overheated right now. If anything you’d be better off selling your car to Carvana for cash and waiting a few months to buy new.

Well, maybe I should call Acura financial tomorrow and ask what the actual payout this week would be for Carvana to buy it. Then update the submission to see if the number changes. If someone I actually come out of some money in the deal, might do it. My wife might have a cow, but hey, that's her problem not mine, right?
we really don't need 2 cars. My wife might drive 50 miles/month at this point. And that might be estimating high. Only risk is if I need to go away (say, dealing with aging parent 2 hours away) and she does not feel like being stuck at home without wheels. Just have to make sure the daughter comes home to visit those days!

There’s a lot of talk about the new TLX price hike. I think everyone should hold off until the car actually comes out and we see what the actual street prices are. I’m excited to take a next generation TLX with the 2.0T/10AT AWD out for a spin.

I’ve got just over 21,000 miles on it and have to make an appointment to take it in for it’s 4th Service (2nd oil change - covered under Toyota Care). I’m going to have to get another pickup with at least a 6’ bed. Today I had to pick up (10) 10” toilet tanks (try finding those at your local big box store, you can’t) and a sewer ejector pump package (pump, drum, check valve) on my way home tonight.

interesting. just ran on Carvana (though did not mention the minor bump to the rear bumper that had to be repaired) and it was only $300 less than my payoff that AFC shows online (though I think that might not be the actual amount Carvana would have to pay for it). I assume once they fully ran it and knew about that accident and scuffed up wheel it might drop! But nice that in theory, if I wanted to get out early, might be able to do it relatively clean. Probably won't at this point though.
Entirely possible at some point I inherit the end of my father's lease on his Sentra (eventually he won't be able to drive at all). If so, then one car would have to go, and no clue how easy it would be to get ride of that.
My hit and run that I claimed on insurance isn't on the Carfax for the TLX. The only things noted are routine service and registration renewals so you may be in the clear on your accident too.
That’s fortunate. My wife was the victim of a minor hit and run in her GLC that resulted in a scraped rear bumper on the side. Nothing major but the body shop estimate was enough that we did go through insurance.
When I requested a quote from Carvana a little while ago, the Carfax apparently shows an accident and the quote was greatly reduced as a result. I suspect when we actually go to a dealer for trade, the reduction will be much less, as we’ll have the opportunity to explain how minor it was and they can see the repair with their own eyes.
I have no clue what the carfax shows, but on the form they specifically ask about accidents. So I would have to say yes to that since it did go through insurance (was not my fault, and being a lease, I did not really care). I did not check that box when I just ran it, but would of course update it to see. Could of course sink the whole idea, but it isn't really a "must do". Plus if I get the wife to agree, it would not go over well to bring a replacement home shortly after.
The talk about accidents and Carfax dings begs a question for me...
A few months back the RDX was hit by some road debris, and it ended up popping some of the clips on the bumper cover. Aside from a scuff on the bottom of the bumper, the paint is still fine. But to be sure of all the fasteners there might be a R&I on the bumper cover... would that end up as "damage" on the Carfax and kill my value? Am I better off selling/trading sooner than later, "as it sits?"
Just for S&Gs, I put the outback into Vroom. $30,145. That is nearly $1200 over what we owe on it with 22 months left. That is nuts. Flat nuts.
I did the same thing with the Crosstrek. We are 1300 ahead. Most likely starting the paperwork today as that’s just too good to pass up. The X1 was much better than pre Covid but still a little upside down. Sins of the past catching up to me there.

I once contacted them about a car in which I was interested. They had over 40 listed on Autotrader. They emailed me back saying that in fact they had none. I asked about the listings and they answered that those were listings from long ago that they never took down. It seem they have that problem with signs too.

My son came by this weekend. He took me to breakfast. He needs tires on his GTI (2016) so I told him he’d be hard pressed to beat Costco’s tire price. So, after breakfast, we mosy to the local store and got a quote.....$100 cheaper than the best quote he got from 2 local places. So, he was ready to pull the trigger, but they have to order them. He should get them this week sometime.
He pointed out that the clear coat was peeling off his front fascia and bumper. Granted, it’s a 4 year old car. But, it looks to me like a poor repair job. Problem there, he bought it new.
I told him to take it back the dealer. After 4 years they may tell him to pound salt. On the other hand, if they’re a decent dealer, they should do a repaint as a “customer courtesy”.
How could the clear coat fail on such a new car unless he’s driving under extreme conditions? Could this have been a cheap repair on pre delivery damage? Sounds shady to me.

When I had an alignment done on the Prelude earlier this year at the dealer, ahead of putting it on the market, that made its way onto its Carfax but the claim on the TLX didn't. It wouldn't have mattered if they did since it was a lease but I found that interesting.

GG, is there an Enterprise location near you? You might want to see about working part time for them like OF and I do. Better yet, fill out the app online and get on indeed.com and see if they are hiring drivers? The majority of folks in my office are retired who are just looking for something to do either two or three days each week. Until your business really takes off, might just be a way to keep busy a few days a week and make some extra income. I started ot at Hertz that way back in 2014 as I got tired of spending 2013 as an independent contractor for a couple companies that moved vehicles for all the rental companies around. I knew I want to be a paid employee so got into Hertz and now Enterprise, a better company for employees as it's privately owned. Just a suggestion until your business gets off the ground. Trust me, if I lived closer, I'd like to be a driver for you to. Especially on my n/s days as we only are working 3 days/week now.
Thanks, Sandy! I’m trying to kill two birds with one stone. As you mention, I’m trying to start my own business vs working for someone else. And, with the COVID thing lingering, I’m trying to keep myself “out there” doing something I enjoy (driving). But, good advice. I appreciate it.
Funny you mention working for someone like Enterprise. I know a person who belongs to my church who is a “runner” for them. He’s about 10 years older than me. But, we were chatting last Sunday about combining forces and going to all the Enterprise locations locally (Cincinnati and Northern Ky) to see if we could collectively get all of their transport business.
As it stands, I’m doing about 2-3 transports per week just between the 3 Acura stores in the general vicinity. That only occupies 1 or 2 days/week though. Not a lot, but if I can get 3 or 4 more dealerships into the fold, I’d be happy.

@graphicguy that sounds like a scrape that got repaired poorly (but good enough not to be noticeable) prior to delivery, but I'd forget about “customer courtesy” or “goodwill” at a VW shop.

Agreed. We had to fight to have our clutch replaced on a 4 month old VW with 8k miles.

You must be willing to work cheap if you can undercut minimum wage with no benefits. Just be careful. A lot of the old guys you’d be putting out of work are ex military or former cops. So many car trunks to get lost in.☠️

ICYMI, the Dover racetrack where they held the NASCAR races this past weekend is concrete. A section was damaged, and they managed to repair it in 15-20 minutes.
At those priced, ignore the cracks and just fill in the holes with readymix?
The driveway needed to be replaced 10 years ago when we moved in. It is crumbling and COMPLETELY shot now.
Is concrete the least expensive solution? I honestly don't know - when we moved into our current house, we paid around $2200 to have a walkway poured from the driveway to the backyard.
The bottom 2 quotes look like complete teardowns of what's there and rebuilding from scratch. Personally if I'm going to spend that much I would want a complete redo if it wasn't that much more.

Concrete would probably be double that. The concrete reference was to keep the Belgian block edging in place.
Yeah, back 10 years ago I had about 8'-10' of concrete walkway replaced and a 3-step stair poured and it was $2000 in worthless Canadian dollars.
Having said that, my cheapskate brother had his driveway repaved a month or two back. His is a decent size, 2 cars wide and probably 50'-60' long. They tore up what was there, re-compacted and filled as needed, then repaved. I thought he said it was $6K but I will be talking to him tomorrow so I'll get specifics.
One of our neighbors has a 2 car wide driveway, a parking pad, and a sidewalk to the front door done in brick pavers. I cannot even imagine what that cost.
1997 Honda Prelude Base - 2022 Acura MDX Type S Advance - 2021 Honda Passport Sport - 2006 BMW 330Ci ZHP
My BIL did that. Long driveway, wide, and at the curves over with an extension to the spare garage. House has to sit 100’ from the road. Maybe more. Must have been real expensive. Look good, but makes snow plowing (lives up in snow country) a royal pain.
Neighbor a few doors up had lots of pavers put down about 5 years ago when he had his garage* redone. Took the crew weeks and looked like a terrible way to make a living. I didn't understand it then and still don't now. I'm not all that crazy about them in driveways. In his case the crew got the grade wrong at first and there was about a 6" difference in height between the driveway and the curb under his roll-up garage door. They had to rip a big section out, re-grade and re-do it.
* He had a typical one-car garage from the '60s torn down. Replacing it is this massive thing that looks twice as tall, twice as wide and as long as his lot allows. I have no idea how he got the permit for it because when I looked into something similar years ago for my garage I was told by the city about a bunch of restrictions and his seems to violate all of them. The oddest part is that a vehicle is never in the thing. He has 3 vehicles and they all park in the driveway year-round, or on the street. I suspect it is actually fitted out as an apartment for his oldest son who still lives there. Not sure what the real story is.
It looks like I got ghosted by Vromm. After submitting the documentation, I never heard back and now the offer has expired. Sent an enquiry to their paperwork email but go no response.
I think vroom and Carvana had issues early on when the pandemic hit. Not sure why now. Maybe a technical glitch? Or possibly they got flooded with accepted offers since they were generous and couldn’t keep up. Maybe just try again.
See my post today in "Real-World Trade-In Values" on this very subject with Vroom. I got a re-quote today that matched my first quote that had expired Monday.

That’s such a shame. Probably drove from the dealer directly into storage. Even if it brings it’s original MSRP the owner is still out the 25 years of storage costs. I love low mileage cars but they should be enjoyed.
Some dimwits could not believe that I took my M6 to the track and also autocrossed it. At the end of the day it’s a car and I used it the way its builders intended.
Yes, agreed, as I don't buy cars that don't enjoy and welcome getting "raced" around.

Today I had to pick up (10) 10” toilet tanks (try finding those at your local big box store, you can’t) and a sewer ejector pump package (pump, drum, check valve) on my way home tonight.

In short, yes, it is also your problem.

I agree. At least not something at a reasonable price point. If we indeed go through with selling the Crosstrek it’s replacement will be a used Land Cruiser. Man do those things hold their value!!

That would be the one!
I once contacted them about a car in which I was interested. They had over 40 listed on Autotrader. They emailed me back saying that in fact they had none. I asked about the listings and they answered that those were listings from long ago that they never took down. It seem they have that problem with signs too.

Not that on most of my cars a CarFax ding would matter.
