Those early 2.0t engines in the Eos are generally troublesome and consume oil. Later year models 2012(?) have revised engines that held up better. Audi suffered from the same issue. My 06 Passat 2.0t used oil at 900 mi/qt at 13000 mi when I bought it and 700 mi/qt when I traded it at 59K, just before the warranty expired. I was afraid expensive repairs were soon to follow.
The GTI engine changeover came in 2009. Guessing it was the same for the Eos. FSI to TSI
Problem with the furniture is that most of it is 15 years old now. It still looks good for a dog and two kids under 6 but if we weren't moving it was getting replaced anyway.
My wife's sister is taking some of it, so that's a good thing.

The only potential problem I was aware of was the cam follower. As long as you change that regularly (easy job), it should be OK. My GTI didn’t use oil, and I autocrossed that. Was consumption a widespread issue?

Hey folks. I know we talked about this several months ago, but the wife and I are in the market for a new mattress. She thinks she wants to get a Tempur-pedic, but I can't remember what the feedback was from the Peanut gallery here.
Why would a dealer drop the price $1700 in this market. Red flag.
I don’t think that they dropped the price. They just got it and want someone to think that they are getting a great deal by slashing through higher prices
oh, mentioned possible GTI in the future to my son (as related to his winter tire/wheel set). He said better buy it quick because he was about to list for sale. Really not an issue. If I stay around here, the car will never sniff the snow anyway. And if we moved up north, I would either get something else, or it would hibernate in the garage when the roads were not dry and free of salt.
I can’t see you moving north. Who leaves NJ for worse winters?
People that want to pay less in taxes, and whose wife wants to go?
You wanted Bennington, right? Here’s something with enough garage space.
I'm tentatively looking at potential hoopties for after I sell my G37.
Don't laugh... I found a Buick Lucerne with a zillion miles, lots of recent work, but some cosmetic needs. I could have bought it, fixed the cosmetic issues, and sold it in a few months when I got bored without it really costing me anything.
Right? "Something with a 3800" is on my mental list right now, for some reason, and that fits the bill - I also think it has potential as a comfortable road trip car, so long as the road trip doesn't involve curvy roads. I suppose a GTP or an older Regal GS would also check the 3800 box.

I had actually forgotten that the Aurora and the most recent Riviera were FWD. A Panther is also a possibility--shouldn't everyone own one of those at some point?

How about a nice Grand Marquis? I’ve been dreaming about them over on cars and conversations. Same reason as you I guess, big comfy boat with a reliable drive train. Cheap to buy, cheap to repair.

Didn’t the Aurora have the “short star” 4.0L which had all the troubles of the Northstar?

Had our tempurpedic for like 15 yrs. recently replaced with hybrids and aren’t too happy with the switch. So I wound up putting mine in the basement (we have split with power bases) and getting a cheapo foam off amazon. It is pretty good. I really like the amazon foam one in my son’s room. It is firmer than mine. I think others are right in saying there really isn’t a reason to pay for the tempurpedic name these days.

The 3.5 liter V6 in the second gen Aurora was basically a Northstar with two cylinders lopped off--I think that one was dubbed the Shortstar. The V8 was Northstar-based on both generations of the Aurora. I think you're right in that they all shared the same maladies.
My Facebook feed keeps showing me an ad for a 2017 Jeep Patriot with 28k from Carvana for $18,990... Wasn't that about what those sold for, when new? I couldn't help but click.
It says this one stickered for an eye-popping $27,980 new. Has AWD, but no backup cam or parking sensors. Old-school LED display on the radio, although it says it has Uconnect. Pretty sure there were better choices available in 2017.
80K miles on an ‘05 V6 powered Audi? No thank-you. My best friend had an (‘02 ish) A4 3.0 Quattro with a 6 speed stick & sport package. It was Amulet Red with grey bottom that almost looked like a modern Alfa Milano at the time. The car drove fantastic. It was in the shop 46 times during his 36 month lease (or maybe it was 39 months). He kept getting bare bones 1.8T automatics as loaners which he absolutely hated!

So the traditional 20th anniversary symbol is china. You think I could claim the car is “china blue”? Lol.

I guess I tempted all sorts of fate the past couple of days- yesterday I drove the 11 year old Clubman to a dinner party @ 20 miles away. I saw north of 85 mph for a while on the interstate. This morning I ran errands all over Louisville in the quarter of a century old Club Sport- keeping the M42 motor wound north of 4000 rpm most of the time. Then this afternoon I drove the the 6 year old 2er to an evening jazz concert and dinner- a 140 mile round trip with a moderate interstate jaunt and about 30 miles of twisting rural two lanes.
I had my AAA card at the ready and their number on speed dial as I expected that I'd need to call them at least 3-4 times but it seems I dodged more than one bullet.

This is gorgeous. I love Topaz Blue, and it seems like most of these have a black interior, like mine did.
Agreed...
My 530i was that same color combo.
I almost bought a gorgeous Topaz Blue E39 540 back in 2006- it was weirdly optioned and lacked a third pedal so I passed.
I bought my 2002 530i Sport Manual back in 2012 with about 55k miles on it. Just happened upon it at a time before the E39 was crazy collectible and paid $12k for it.
If I had to pick one car out of the many I’ve owned that I should have held on to...well, maybe the E91 m-sport manual we had. But this would be a close second.
I guess I tempted all sorts of fate the past couple of days
You should have issued a TRIGGER WARNING for your post. The timid among us (you know who you are) need to know ahead of time what they're about to read. You know, safe space and all that.
My folks kept a loaded .22 pistol in the master bedroom closet, since my dad worked 24 hour shifts for his job at the FD and he wanted my mom to be able to protect herself.
When he switched over to become the fire cause investigator for the city, he went through the police academy (at age 41 or 42!) to become a sworn peace officer. He carried a 9MM as his primary sidearm.

If you’re worried about those old hoopties breaking down, I could loan you my Chrysler or my rusty cargo van. Neither has ever broken down and if they did you just leave ‘em on the side of the road.
