Big day tomorrow. For the first time in 10 months I will be stranded at home all day with no wheels. My wife is going into the office tomorrow. Team lead is taking them all out to lunch so she is going up earlier to "hotel" work for a bit then will be there a while after lunch. But this means that I won't have wheels available all day. And I even have some open time on my work schedule, and stuff I wanted to do.
I am sure I will figure out a way to survive this 1st world probably. But it is going to bug me all day.
Good thing I saved a ton of money going to 1 car because timing wanting a replacement in the middle of the great car shortage was poor planning!
Wonder if I could stumble upon something worth getting Saturday? Hope the wife feels like shopping, but I think to do that it means another Hyundai is following me home.
I know you previously had one of the earlier generation of these, but my local dealer is apparently still discounting the one manual transmission Elantra N-Line they have by $3k. Don't know if they have any dealer stuff on top of that, but if not that's a good deal on this Civic Si competitor. As you probably know, the N-Line was designed/tuned by a guy that Hyundai lured from BMW.
Lots of compliments on the sting gray over saddle with black wheels tonight when I was out at Target. I’m noticing this thing is a magnet for attracting small talk.
I believe Target is pronounced “Tarjay” as in “la boutique tarjay”.
I drove my 4 exxxx e to la boutique tarjay.

Oh, read the fine print. Seems legit price but does say “all incentives applied”. So most likely they have military, college grad, first responder, etc layered in.

Time to start looking at Craigslist for a temporary hooptie that will get you from A to B for 6 months until sanity returns to the market.
it is an option but I always get spooked normally by the CL bottom feeder market. And I assume it is much worse now. So I will hold off.
I did miss one. My neighbor just bought a new Highlander hybrid, to replace their well worn 2006 Pilot. Not sure the miles but I doubt low. Some decent sized dents on front fender, and a small rust spot on trailing edge of rear fender. But overall looks OK.
They ended up not trading in the Pilot and selling it privately. I did not know until they already had offered it to parents of some friends of theirs. So not sure what they even got for it. I told the wife I missed my opportunity. And got "the look" and some comment about her not wanting that old car.
but, was likely a good deal. 1 owner, big stack of all records, newer fancy goodyear tires. he is a doctor and I don't think skimped on maintenance! So quite likely it was a really good deal. But, gone now.
OK, I get it, your wife won’t let you. Say no more.
Craigslist isn’t so bad. The real crooks are pretty obvious. I usually get 40-50k out of my cheap cars and sell them for about a third of the purchase price. Inexpensive transportation. Not perfect but they don’t have to be for $2 or $3 thousand.

A Sunset Orange M2C with 3,200 miles on it turned up on my dealer’s lot yesterday. I balked at the price but my wife said “ You’re 64 and working after your retirement. Why shouldn’t you have something nice? We need to enjoy our lives while we have good health and blessings.”
It was a moot point as it sold before noon.
I give up.
When wives suggest or don’t balk when their husbands buy a car they’re up to something. As a lot of you regulars know from another Edmunds site at least 10 years ago, that was a dining room suite in our house. It took quite a while for me to outwit her on that. To be honest, in the end it was one of her childhood friends who really rescued me buy telling her the one she had was plenty nice enough but if she insisted on getting another one she’d gladly take the old one. Looks like they benchmarked the performance of the MK V GTI's and A3's of the 2006ish era. A little bit lower torque though. Is it good to be only 16 years behind Audi/VW?
Tires are a truly "serious" size at 235's though. Means this car might mean some business in the twisters. Costs a bit more I think than a GTI did 16 years ago, but how much is inflation in that time frame?

My sorta local dealer (where I bought my Sonata) has that same car in White. There online instant quote price is MSRP.
Maybe consider going in for a test drive? If you like it then you can see if they want to deal. As you know, very few people drive manuals these days, and so they might just want to deal once they find someone who does. You might also ask if your local dealer will do a price match. Just a thought.
It does sound like you're starting to get a little antsy without a car. I know I would be. Waiting till November or December would save money, of course, but for a car guy like you doing without a car for several more months does sound like a challenge.
That N Line has plenty of power. I don't really care if on paper it is lower than a GTI. It is still very quick, and still manageable with FWD. That is all I need. My DSG version was very zippy. For $25k with all those options it is a screaming bargain. Comparable GTI has to be about $35K now? An Si I assume will be $30k.
There will be an Elantra N coming later next year, I believe - that will be a more direct sibling to the Veloster N and competitor to the GLI/WRX. The N-Line is mostly just appearance parts...meh.

Well, I did it, or at least took the first step. I pushed the button to “Reserve” a Maverick. XL, with the 2.0L and the 4k tow package. $23,320. Now I’m going to have to get with a dealer for the next step.
I will insist on 3 things.
1) Invoice price 2) No add-ons (nitrogen filled tires, etc) 3) No money in advance
From what I have been reading, Ford is not pre-allocating the Mavericks to dealers. Each dealer gets one and one only. The rest are reserved for customer preorders. It seems to me the dealers will want, even need, customers to preorder. A certain percentage will not actually buy, and that is the best outcome for the dealer, as they will then have units on the showroom floor.
I was thinking about this last night, and it occurred to me that dishonest dealers would have a lot of incentive to go back on their word. Promise you a great deal, and then renege when the car actually shows up. Which is why I added in point number 3, no money in advance. If I don’t have any money on the line, then I cannot lose anything more than a little of my time.
Worth the gamble, at least in my mind. Once I actually get close to one, I may hate the thing, who knows? But this is the only way I will get the chance to buy one if I do like it.
"Driven: The 2021 Hyundai Elantra N-Line Refuses to Grow Up, and That’s a Good Thing This feisty little sedan is also a performance bargain.
MALIBU, California—I needed precisely three seconds to fall in love with the 2021 Hyundai Elantra N-Line. I grabbed the keys to an anonymous gray one—actually, all of the new 2021 Elantra N-Lines look pretty anonymous, regardless of color—and headed out to the main road, revving hard and dumping the clutch so I could dart in front of a slow-moving truck. The immediate feedback from the Elantra N-Line was everything I could ask for: Quick. Light. Feisty. This was a car that wanted to get out and play.
Happily, we were right smack in the middle of my favorite curvy roads, and playing was the agenda. Bombing through the curves brought me back to the early 1990s and my days at a British car magazine, days spent zooming around in crappy cars poorly suited to such shenanigans. Not that the Elantra is crappy or poorly suited; it's really an overachiever with a lively engine, well-engineered suspension, and (optional) summer tires that never say die....
Under the hood is the same 201-horsepower/195 lb-ft, 1.6-liter turbo we've come to know and love from the Veloster R-Spec and the now-discontinued Elantra GT N-Line. There is noticeable turbo lag, but I didn't think it was a hindrance in my test; in fact, it kind of added to the fun. You can effectively turn the turbo on and off with the accelerator pedal, and once the boost is on, the engine just screams. Once you get the timing down, you'll know exactly when to light up the turbo for a good corner exit. (Just remember to keep the revs up—if you're below 3,000 rpm or so, your request for boost will be summarily denied.)
....Cheap(ish) performance cars shouldn't be about making the best time. They should be about having the best time—and if you agree with that notion, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra N-Line hits the bullseye."
"2021 Hyundai Elantra N Line Balances Performance and Value With 201 horsepower, a standard six-speed manual, and a $25,095 base price, Hyundai's new Elantra N Line is a compelling sport-compact player. BY SCOTT OLDHAM DEC 4, 2020
....Equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission, the N Line pulls hard both off the line and out of tight second-gear corners, exhibiting just a hint of torque steer. The transmission's first three gears are short and tightly spaced, which translates into great responsiveness in the city. However, second gear is all done around 55 mph, and the additional gear change to third will add a couple tenths to its zero-to-60-mph time. An equally close-ratioed seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is an $1100 option. The manual's clutch and shifter are light but offer sufficient feedback, and the pedals are well placed for heel-and-toe action.
Projector headlights, LED taillights, and a sunroof are also standard, as are dark-finished 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/40R-18 tires, either Hankook Ventus S1 RX all-season or Goodyear Eagle F1 summer rubber. The N Line shares the regular Elantra's strut front suspension but gains an independent rear end, larger front brake rotors, stiffened powertrain mounts, and revised chassis tuning. Along with firmer dampers, the anti-roll bars are stiffer and spring rates have been dialed up a whopping 26 percent in front and 71 percent in the rear versus the standard Elantra.
Given the revisions, we were prepared for a bridle ride. But the N Line's comportment feels pleasantly compliant and exhibits good body control. Its steering ratio is spot on, and there's plenty of communication with the front tires. The N Line retains its composure when pushed hard, and its front end has good bite when turning into corners. While it doesn't have the power or intensity of the harder-core N model, it is good fun and should be able to hang with your buddy's Civic Si on curvy roads."
Weird day. Didn’t really miss the car since didn’t really have to go anywhere (and I still haven’t bothered to get dressed!). But today is the first day I think in over a year that I was actually here all along. No people, not even a dog. Very quiet, just strange.

So, I dunno how Ford works, but I was thinking this was a real issue for Jeep dealers, too on special orders. Would they offer crazy discounts to put the order in and then try to raise the price. Apparently there is a chargeback to a dealer of some amount if a customer order is not taken and is then converted to inventory.

I'm no expert as three pointed stars rather than tridents consume my funds, but I was thinking something of that age would be more like 30K. I know the market has inflated, but most of the inflation seems to be around more mass market offerings.

That's how I'm feeling right now. Wife's been gone seven months, and the kids went to visit her just before Memorial Day. Things are very, very quiet (though for longer than just one day). I find myself talking to the chickens more.... Is that a bad sign?
Perhaps the most significant thing I notice, though, is how cold the house stays, even through the warmest days. There must be a lot of heat being dumped into the house from bodies, cooking, etc., that just isn't happening right now, because the inside temperature is currently 61 (16) at the ground floor, and the warmest it rose was to 68 (20). I opened up the windows upstairs for a few nights when it was hitting mid-upper 80s (~28-32) during the day, but even then the warmest it was up there was only 74 (23). I almost felt like turning on the heater this morning, yet I haven't ever done that before September!

Biggest change, new one has the power seat!

There is enough to go around, I just have a mental/financial block about spending north of $60k for a car.

Much like a M Sport F3x; all show, no go in most cases.
I’d wait for the real N car.

With a stick and lower price, I’d like this too.

But I’m not this brave even if it was a stick. Laughing at $1,200 estimate to fix. If real, it would be fixed. Maybe that was just the down payment. Looks like a JRGO special.
