I'm assuming Pilots and the like are "available," but are already sold (at MSRP or higher) once they arrive on the truck. I think the third generation Toyota Highlander was like that for a while. And, of course, any Honda in the 1980s. The early CR-X my dad bought, he had to visit a dealer to get on the wait list. They eventually called him and said they had gotten a delivery. The options were a red one or a white one.

I tried to buy a VW Rabbit diesel in 1980. Hot model after the 79’ gas crisis. The arrogant salesman told us we’d take whatever they gave us whenever they gave it to us for whatever price they decided to charge. Needless to say, 41 years later I have never owned a VW. I’m getting the same vibes these days.

I have been known to hold a grudge myself, but that does seem a bit extreme. That salesman did not work for Volkswagen, or Volkswagen of North America, just that one local dealer.

If I blacklisted every car brand where I have had a bad experience with a salesperson, I would be unable to buy a Ford, or Chevy, or Dodge, or Honda, or Toyota, or VW, or ...

Which wouldn't leave me with very many choices. :)

Which is more important, product or process?

We bought 4 Saturns from 2002 to 2008 because the process was so customer forward.

absolutely product or process. I would much rather but a great car from a terrible dealer, than a terrible car from a great dealer (if those are my 2 choices).

I only have to spend 2 hours or so at the dealer, but live with the car a lot longer than that!

big day today. First test drive excursion since the pandemic started! Went through the Hyundai lot since we were passing by. The red Kona was not where last spotted. there were no parking spots at all (that dealer's lot is a disaster). so considering we didn't even know if it was there, and the place seemed busy, we left. Hit up the Honda dealer instead. Lots more parking there!

Ended up driving a Civic. I did ask the saleskid how many they guy. he said 11 (but could have made that up). at least 3 on the lot (2 in the showroom and the one I drove). A red over black Touring. Overall, very nice car. Power seat had enough cushion length and tilt to be livable. Rest of it, very nicely done. Roomy, great tech. Digital dash was cool. Seemed more expensive than it was (easily passing for an Acura). drove nice. Got up to speed quick, and the CVT was not very noticeable. steering, ride and handling were good. Very much a "grown up" car. Actually reminded me of the Accord from a few generations ago. About the only negative we noticed was a lot of tire noise (rest of car was very quiet)/

Given the equipment level and performance, the $29,350 MSRP seemed like a good deal.

Told them I was mostly interested in the hatchback so would come back to look at those in a couple of months.

place was pretty busy. I guess they are still finding something lying around to sell people!

anyway, I did like the Civic. If I needed or wanted a basic but well equipped sedan and MPG was a big concern, it would be a good choice. Not thinking I really want one of those though now.

funny thing, on the display spot out front, there was a red 2019 A spec TLX for sale. Looked just like mine but had a red interior. Wife did comment that she liked that car (it was very comfortable).

she also commented after we drove past another Kona (bright green) that she thought they were nice looking. at one point, she was even on her phone looking at color options. So pretty sure I could bring one home and she would not complain.

Oh, one thing I did not like on the Civic (this might be a result of just driving a CUV for the last year) is that it is really pretty low. Nice having tidy dimensions and a low, small hood (easy to maneuver) but really had to climb out of it. So thinking that something that sites a bit higher is the way to go. at least for a regular use car. Even the Kona was noticeably higher seat point. easy in and out!

chatted with the wife later at the pool. She actually suggested getting something cheaper to tide us over, or it being a good time to get a toy! She also likes the idea of a truck (thinking it would be very useful). I think she even wants a car because she kept bringing up "what would we do if something happened to the RDX and it was out of commission?"

so can't say anything changed, other than she is fine with going out looking again. Something will eventually turn up. Just don't know when.

Oh, I doubt it will be a CRV. We really don't need another car that close to the one we have.

I do really want to see the Santa Cruz though when it comes out.

Just specced out a Maverick out of curiosity, they way I would probably order it. an XLT with the luxury package and moonroof (that stuff, non-negotiable!). Hybrid. Free color. soft bed cover. Came out to be right about $28,900. Lease calculator said with $500 it was $365/month.

Interesting that everything I looked at or built online today all came out to be within a few $100 of $29k sticker.

normally I would see what that would get on the slightly used market. These days, I don't think there is one!

Our former county attorney told me he had one back in the day. It had an oil consumption problem and he returned to the dealer several times to try to get it addressed. On the final visit, his eye began to wander, and he found a TSB for said oil consumption problem on the service writer’s desk. He threw a fit, and they fixed the car.

poking around used car listings. Some really ambitions asking prices ($17K for a 2017 Cruze? or 2014 Corolla? Stuff like that). But using my $29K "what is out there" price point, a few interesting choices.

this will be cheap to keep, right? Love the color combo! Probably bigger than I would want though... But at least it did depreciate!

I got to drive a 228i and a 330i back to back today. I found the 2 series a little cramped though I’m sure I could get used to it. The 3 series had much better room for me (6’2”).

I’m puzzled by one thing. The internet says they both have 2.0L turbo engines but the 3 series was notably faster. How is that since I assume the 2 series is lighter?

Seats were very nice. What is that, Pleather? It didn’t look like leather.

Add another punch to the 2021 list. This one was a bit unexpected but sometimes those are the best ones.

I traded the Model3 for a 2022 Defender 90 X Dynamic yesterday. I loved the EV experience but as I've mentioned before a sedan just doesn't work for what I enjoy doing. It was a great car, but it was a car, and with Rivian timing still a large unknown I decided to move into something that will allow me to go where I want to in the mountains without any hassle.

Originally I went in just to drive one and see what the Defender was really like as they've always intrigued me. Like everything else they are scarce on the ground, but it turns out the Denver dealer had one they could sell. Apparently someone had ordered it and when it came in they weren't able to complete the deal so the dealer ended up with this one in inventory. If I were to order one it would be here in December as their allocation is spoken for until then. It wasn't my favorite color combo and was missing one or two small options, but it was this or nothing and knowing it's somewhat short term I was OK with the trade-offs.

I drove it and was really impressed with how much I liked it and asked them to put together some numbers. They were up front that MSRP was the going rate, but no markups from that which I felt was fair in this market and especially on a model that's so scarce. They came in at $44k on the Model3, which I was pleased with, especially considering that's what I paid for it 9 months and 11k miles ago (when factoring in the CO EV rebate). The numbers looked good, but some of you may have seen in the Trade In thread I was also considering an XC40 Recharge and the Volvo dealer up the street had one exactly like I wanted it configured.

I told the Land Rover dealer I wanted to go drive that one more time just to make sure I could give up the EV experience. As much as I loved the Defender I really thought I would end up going with the XC40 Recharge to stay with an EV. Unfortunately during the short test drive the entire dash and infotainment crashed 3 times in a major way, several minutes with no radio, dash info and at times no climate. I took that as a sign and told them no thanks and went back to Land Rover. Even if (as?) the market cools I felt the Defender has a better chance at holding some value given it's new and scarce (time will tell on that).

@breld met me there the second time and we took another drive "just to be sure" but I had already asked them to start the paperwork. All in all a very easy transaction, totally unexpected but I'm really happy with the Defender. It's the perfect "bridge" vehicle until Rivian can start mass producing. Not something I ever thought I'd own but couldn't be happier with it.

I do miss the EV experience but for now there isn't anything out there in EV guise that worked for me, and as @breld and I discussed the powertrain (this has the I6) in the Defender is really great and the one I'd want going back to an ICE vehicle. Really fortunate how it all worked out, and I told @breld this probably means Rivian will call me Monday with a delivery date. :p

Not bad. Did you ever think you’d see the day when you’d be glad to ONLY pay MSRP?

it actually has simplified shopping for me right now. I assume that is what anything new will go for, so easier to know what to look at, and much less grinding if you do want to try and buy.

like this case. They got one, this is the price, you want it or not? If not someone else will buy it shortly.

if it came off that easily and couldn't be put back on, most likely it had to be replaced anyway.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

I bet you will unconsciously go out to the RDX to go get something at the store, Home Depot and find you have no ride. I’ve done that multiple times. What an empty feeling.

One of the handful of reasons we haven’t sold the Jetta, albeit mostly from her perspective. There have been maybe 10 or 15 days since the pandemic started, but only about 3 since the used car market went batshit crazy, that there has been reason for a second car.

Like the Defender to be honest though I'd get a different color combo. Now, I usually don't like black alloys but on this particular vehicle, they work. Looks a bit sinister...but in a good way if that makes any sense!

Got in a whole bunch of vehicles at Toyota since Monday, a lot of Camry's and a few Corolla's. Zeroed in a new Corolla XLE today in that light blue color I like so much. Had the alloys I like but to be honest, a bit on the boring side. Not sure I could go with one as think I'd get bored with the looks in a few short weeks. But on the new Corolla Cross, think I could be very happy with it and guessing it's because of the 5-door look. I don't really like a trunk on any vehicle to be honest, I prefer the versatility of a hatch even though I hardly haul anything. Just having it there if needed is enough for me to like it...strange I know but I like having it. And really am ready to do a Toyota product again just for it's simplicity. Drove a regular Corolla LE yesterday for about 20 minutes or so and was very happy with it. Great ergonomics, could see out of every corner of it...it just did everything right. So really looking forward to driving the new Corolla Cross.
Drove home a young lady with a CH-R and she loves it. We discussed the blind spot in the rear where the door handle is and she did agree it's a bit of an issue since she has the dark interior, but still said she loves the vehicle! Am guessing many folks who own one/lease one, feel the same way about this issue but are/were willing to overlook it as the rest of the vehicle meets their needs. And I'm also guessing the smaller size has a lot to do with it, along with it's youthful looks. I'd prefer one with a lighter interior to be honest and there's a slight chance that I could have one on my side of the garage sometime in the next year! Do think I'd get the one with the hubcaps and just replace the steelies with a set of alloys I've been seeing at Pep Boys whenever I go there. Think they'd look great on it or find a set of 17" Toyota alloys from another Toyota product to put on. Don't like the ones they have now with the darker look on them, just don't like them.

Went through the new car wash here in Margate after work tonight and liked the results. I got the outside wash for $6.95 and they have an area with free vacuums to clean the carpets yourself. they also have staff on site to do this work for ya but one pays for that privilege. They also have other priced washes/waxes/wheel cleaner which I might use one day. It's closer to the house than the one in Boca I've been going to for years now and they haven't raised their prices yet. The wash in Boca really wants folks to get the unlimited wash package which let's one go as many times per month as they'd like but think the price is just a bit too much. Sure, it's pretty close to my Enterprise location but I don't think I'd go enough to warrant the high price. As it turned out, I usually was going about every 2 weeks or so depending on how dirty the Golf got or how much rain came down. The blue color on the Golf hides the dirt well but what really gets me is the amount of brake dust the alloys seem to get within that 2 week time frame. And I hate that brake dust to be honest...really hate it! So try to go every couple of weeks or there abouts.
Personally, I'm going to miss that Father's Day special I used to purchase, buy 4 washes/get 2 free. I get two of them so I'd get 12 washes total for the price of 8 and last year, it took me about 10 months to use them all. But this new car wash in Margate I think will work out nicely. Really close to the Toyota store and going there after work on Saturday like I did today worked out nicely. Vacuumed out the interior when done and cleaned up the remaining brake dust with a damp paper towel when I got home. Got most of it but missed a bit on a couple of the wheels. Next time I'll try the wheel cleaner option just to see how well it works and if it's worth the extra price premium they charge. Went there with my daughter last year after she got her new Accent but had forgotten until I pulled in tonight. Also like that they have later hours now so can go after I get off work. I miss washing the cars after getting off work on Saturdays like I did when I was younger and at the post office. But now with my spinal issues, it's just too painful to do it all myself. I just can no longer do it but there's something about having a freshly washed/vacuumed vehicle that makes one feel happy. It's almost time for my bi-yearly detail at this place I go to in Lauderdale Lakes on Oakland Park Blvd. They wash/wax the vehicle and clean the inside carpets and windows by hand. They've raised their prices over the years and last time I went, it was $50 plus a tip but well worth it! Vehicle looks showroom fresh when they've finished! Wash it by hand and then pull it into a covered area with great light and proceed to wax it and do the interior. takes a good 60 minutes or so and they do get a crowd but well worth it. I usually go on a weekday morning about 10 am, they open at 8:30 or there about. Have always been happy with the results and go at least every 6 months or so. And must admit, car looks great when I leave...and I feel much better to.

The M2C is back on the web site; must have been a glitch. Still too expensive.

Different HP for the 2 vs the 3, so not surprised it feels slower.

228hp in the 2 vs 255hp in the 3 makes that much difference? Anyway, if the 2.0L in the 3 seems that fast I’d like to drive one with the inline 6. (Or do they use that engine any more?)

The 228i is the Gran Coupe, that is a FWD based model. It has a different 2.0L engine that is transverse. Even though it's the same size, it's not the same engine (or drivetrain)

228i vs. 330 is like X1 vs X3. Completely different, not just bigger size.

To confuse it even more, the 2-Series coupes and convertibles are RWD based, and use the same engines as the 3-Series.

Sandy, you can ceramic coat your alloys too if you want. That at least can make it much easier to clean them off with just water
