    @jmonroe1,
Things like that are never discussed at the C level. That way they can claim ignorance.

4xe was just a bad 12 v battery. Ready to be picked up. At least it was all in warranty…

That's been discussed a bit on the 4xe forums. Several owners have ditched the stock battery as a result.
Yes, I have seen that, known weak link apparently.

Knock wood, mine has been relatively problem free. One phantom CEL that went away before I could get it in for service and the battery coolant pump that was handled under warranty. Seems like there was one other trip for a host of updates.

Scheduled to go in Friday for an oil change and a recall. While I am there I might casually mention to a sales person that I’d be intrigued by a Grand Cherokee (non 4xe) if they would essentially swap keys. :)

Still leaning towards a Maverick but the JGC has always been a favorite.
I'm waiting on the recall until I get the oil changed in April; it's relatively simple- just updating the HVAC; apparently under certain conditions the defogger goes AWOL. I haven't noticed any problems with it.

That did that one of the 4xe when they put a new battery in

seems that the issue is often not the battery itself, it is all the battery monitoring systems tied into it (particularly on a hybrid where the 12V has a different assignment).

My daughter’s 4xe must be possessed. Went to unlock it and everything is flashing - interior lights and turn signals with clicking from the fuse box. Had her reseat all fuses but won’t start. I suspect 12 V is dead now. Similar happened around Christmas- towed to dealer and modules reflashed. Will have it towed again.

When my S4 was possessed it was due to someone (an idiot's) bad prior faulty aftermarket windshield installation letting 40 straight days of rain right into the control module.

Got something in the mail from Hyundai today about some theft litigation..."Kia Hyundai Vehicle Theft Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation" but I haven't owned my Hyundai Tucson since 12/12/14! Will need to open the letter as maybe since I did own it at that time, 12/1/13 to 12/12/14, guessing I'm still part of this litigation. Hey, if I am...sign me up as I want what I'm supposed to get!

Drove a 2024 Jetta at work today and was surprisingly impressed with the way it drove and the new instrumentation. Guessing it was a base model as the audio system was pretty awful. Have been looking at the VW store offerings of late and am still liking the GTI, believe it or not. I hear that the new infotainment system is simply awful but hopefully that could be overlooked. Just something to think about as like others in here, there's just nothing that really excites me out there in the market place right now. And was at the Mini Cooper store dropping off rentals today, and saw a big "SOLD" sign on the dash of that white over white CountrymanS. The more I looked at it today, the less I liked it but maybe it was that color combination. But I wasn't sad one bit that it sold which just tells me it just wasn't the right vehicle for me.

At 75,550 on the Golf right now and in my 10th year of ownership. Up to date on all maintenance but do need to clean it out a bit as have a lot of "stuff" that needs to be put in the trash. Had planned to do this on Saturday but ended up working a seven hour day. Since I was feeling pretty good, said I'd work when they asked me on Tuesday. Turned out to be a very easy day with a couple of runs up to Palm Beach Airport to pick up a few vehicles. Not sure why they sent us so far to pick up vehicles but we get paid to drive...not think! As OF will attest, it really is a great part time gig with every day being different. For a guy like me, driving newer vehicles all the time is a dream come true. Just wish we could drive longer distances like OF does up north. I used to drive the whole state of Florida when I was an independent contractor, and loved it. Nothing like opening all the windows and sunroof, turning on the tunes and driving for a few hours! I get why a bunch of my co-workers have been doing this for over ten years already.

True dat! (I felt embarrassed to even type that) Thursday I got to drive a 5.0 Mustang convertible from Burlington to Albany. No snow or ice on the roads so I had fun going through the mountains near Ironville in the Adirondacks.

What a car like that with only 20k miles was doing up there I’ll never understand.
My daughter currently lives on Albany, so we go down occasionally. What is the preferred route for you guys? From the Islands, but going through Burlington it's usually 7 to 22A to 4 to 149 to 87. Ft. Ann through the outlets is sometimes a PITA, but the rest is usually OK. Is there a better way?
That’s our normal way to go to/from Burlington but you are quite a bit north of Burlington. Why not take the ferry across and hook up to I-87 north of Plattsburgh? It’s probably worth the ferry ticket cost to avoid getting stuck behind a tractor trailer on 22A.

Sometimes when the truck traffic is heavy we take rt. 17 at Addison, cross the bridge and then take any one of the twisty roads through Ironville to rt.74 to I-87. Scenic and fun if you’re driving a car that handles well.

If we're tired or feeling lazy we do sometimes take the GI ferry, as we only live about 10 minutes from it. Even though it's only a 12 minute boat ride, depending on if it's loading or just left, it may actually take longer. Plus, it's about $18.00 each way for car and 2 people. Weirdly the number of passengers costs more after one.

That got me thinking. How many of you chronic car buying guys can honestly say you’ve spent a million dollars give or take 40 grand for all of your car/truck purchases combined. For @oldfarmer50, he can count tractors.

I know for me, I doubt I’ve spent more that a couple hundred grand and I’m older than most of you guy’s.

If I haven't missed any, I can say that I have spent less than $200,000 on all of my vehicle purchases combined. I might have to refer to my vehicle list, but that feels right.

EDIT: Haha; just checked my list. $200,050 spent in total on 19 vehicles. This does not include any return value from sales.

I think it would be reasonable to look at how much is spent to acquire and call it yours... for whatever period of time that is....(as opposed to MSRP, TCO, etc., measures). For leasing, that would be the lease cost. For a purchase/trade, I'm thinking the net purchase price (because you've already factored the price of the traded vehicle previously).

I've never traded in a vehicle, but, if I had, I would have factored it this way in my number in the above post.

I would say money spent on the lease should count. but it is somewhat misleading if you are buying and trading frequently for small depreciations.

@jmonroe1 - see what you've started? We had a nice quiet discussion going here, and you have to go and muck it all up with your question, without any context. :sunglasses:

A lot of us lease, some of us - ahem, @tjc78 - almost exclusively. So, it's hard to get an accurate answer to your question.

not really. Say you buy a car for cash, at $50k. and every 6 months you trade it in at a $5k loss for a car worth that much. so $50, 45, 40, etc. so that would end up being something like $180K spent on purchases, but you really only are out $45k.

Oh, one last thing -- do we account for inflation? Those of you buying cars in the 60's and 70's will obviously be spending less than people buying cars after the turn of the century.

This could take some time as I've not owned that many vehicles in my lifetime. Only one I traded after just a year with the rest staying in the garage for a few years to some almost ten. For this one, gotta get out a pen & paper and put the old brain to work. But I'm sure it's maybe around ten vehicles, give or take. I'll get back to y'all tomorrow.

Drove another Jeep Renegade today with just over 3500 miles and it was just "meh" to be honest. Guess I'm really not a Jeep person. Definitely liked the 2024 Jetta from yesterday much better even though it had the cheap stock audio system. That would have to be the first thing I'd work on if I bought one. But rather buy something with an upscale audio system already built in and of all the systems I've tried lately, Bose is among the best sounding. We have that in the Kona as far as I remember, and it sounds pretty sweet. Truth be told, I drove it home from the dealership that first Sunday night in December and haven't driven it since. Went with her the first time she filled up the tank just to make sure she knew where everything was. No more puling into the right side of the gas pump...she now has to pull up on the left side. I'm the only one left that has to pull up on the right side. Remember the days when it was in the center of the rear bumper area. Especially remember it on our '68 Eldorado as I was the one who filled the tank most of the time for my mom.

Most times we go out together, we usually take the Golf as it's usually easier for us. Don't have to change the seat position and adjust the mirrors. And unless I'm really feeling unwell enough not to drive, it's usually me behind the wheel. But when we're with the oldest or the youngest, they both prefer to do the driving. Those first few times made me realize that we're now the "older generation", we've taken over that role from our departed folks!

And what about taxes, fees, and finance charges? Lol. Do repairs and maintenance count?
I’m not sure I could possibly come up with an accurate number. I would imagine my CTS was my biggest loser at $15k depreciation. But I also came out ahead on some vehicles. And I did have some costly leases. But also many cheap beaters.
Going strictly by price paid vs price sold, plus lease payments, but excluding all current inventory since true cost has yet to be realized, I came up with very roughly $265k.

Turned out to be a slow afternoon at work today but a run came up at around 3 pm this afternoon for a run from PBI to the used car sales office in Ft. Pierce. We had five drivers for four vehicles so I volunteered to sit this run out to make things easier. We get paid either way so really no big deal. Ride up was pretty hassle free with no one needed petrol before we left. Traffic was pretty normal on I-95 up to Ft. Pierce and we left there right at 4:30. Took I-95 back down to Jupiter and then got over to the turnpike since they're super close there. According to the GPS of one of the drivers, both routes were running somewhat normally so our lead did the switch. Guessing there was some kind of accident or something just north of West Palm Beach as we ended up bumper to bumper on the turnpike for a good 30 miles or so. Instead of getting back to base by 5:30, we finally pulled in at 6:50. Very unexpected and of course, we were the last crew in for the evening. Was nice to make a few extra bucks just sitting in my seat of the 15 pack!

And that's the best thing about this job, every day is different. We never know what we're going to be driving or where we'll be going. Some days, like Monday, are very consistent with one run after another all day long. Our morning was like that again today but after lunch, we sat for awhile after doing a couple of local runs near PBI. Were very surprised to get that last run up to Ft. Pierce at around 3 in the afternoon. That happens a lot of times on a Friday as branches seem to need a mess of vehicles for their weekend reservations. And now with Spring Break about to start, think we'll be busier then normal. I know I got the kids from Chicago a four day rental for mid March on a compact vehicle for a very decent price. But they give us pretty good rates with our Friends & Family discount. And just by changing their reservation to the office right near our house instead of Ft. Lauderdale airport, was able to save them even more as there were none of those pesky airport fees that airport renters need to pay.

Sandy, I think that Jeep is just a reskinned FIAT so don't expect too much out of it!

I am also a big fan of memory settings for seats and mirrors if you are sharing a car on any regular basis. Our Acura has them, and if we replace that with something else my wife will drive (when she drives, which isn't that often now) it will have the feature. My truck doesn't but she never drives that.

not really. Say you buy a car for cash, at $50k. and every 6 months you trade it in at a $5k loss for a car worth that much. so $50, 45, 40, etc. so that would end up being something like $180K spent on purchases, but you really only are out $45k.

Hahaha! No, that's exactly it. The sum of the "sticker" might be $180K, but if you only spent $50k (cash on the first one), then you only spent $50K. Now, if you bought the first one for $50K, lost $5K to depreciation, and paid a net of $5K on the next one, and did that over and over and over again for ten cars (total), your total cost would be $95K on those ten cars even though they were all stickered at $50K (500K "worth" of cars).

My truck does not have memory and my wife drove it the other day…. Took me a little bit to get it back where I was 100% comfortable! First world problems for sure.

With all the hoopties I’ve purchased I doubt I’ve hit $100k. Tractors included.

Ok - I’m kinda surprised at my total vehicle cost. I thought it may have been higher.

Total (assuming full term on both current leases)

    Purchased net - $16,200 (7 cars)
    Leases net - $210,000 (12 cars)

    Purchase average = $2314
    Lease Average = $17,500

To be fair only one of the owned cars was new. All the others were cheapo used.

    My spreadsheet -
Some of this could be off a bit here or there and I’m a little sketchy on the olds / Solara transaction. Based on that payment there had to be some neg equity.

Also - some of my earlier leases I am not proud of. I’d never sign those today!

Typo on the Elantra $21000 MSRP

Also I may have profited something on 2003 Avalon. I seem to remember trading that and getting a check back for a few bucks

At this point I’m lucky I can remember all the cars I owned. A real stretch remembering what I paid for them. And really a guess what I sold them for!
