Just finished a long conversation with my sister. They are in the home stretch of their drive from Portland to San Diego, and nobody wants to make this drive again at the end of the summer to get the kid and the car back up to Spokane.

So, she's asked me to check into what it might cost to ship the vehicle. We figure it takes about 3 days and maybe $750 or so to drive it - hotels, gas, food. If shipping is roughly the same, they might consider it and put him on a $150 flight.

I know @breld has had cars shipped to him, but wanted to float the idea out to the group to see if anyone else had recommendations. It doesn't have to be enclosed, for sure.

Just store it in Fintails driveway for the summer!
I was going to say, I am in Spokane, I could theoretically do it - but the cost of my one way ticket + costs of driving might not save any money :) Would probably be a fun road trip, as was said, lots to see on that route. I'd have the kid drive it - these are memory makers, I clearly remember college age road trips in the 90s.

I don't know if the turbo has ever been asked to do any work...at least when she is driving it.
Speaking of turbos, I had the opportunity to drive a F-150 xlt with the 2.7L ecoboost today. I was blown away by the 31mpg gas mileage over 150 miles of mixed highway and country roads. My 3.7L NA might get mid 20s if I had a tailwind. I’m sure the 10 speed auto helped with the mileage. It also beats my truck by 25hp and over 100ft.lbs. of torque which gave it a lot of pick up.
    ————————————————
All this talk of mileage in the 30’s reminds me of my ‘95 Bonneville with the 3800 V6 engine that got 32 MPG repeatedly when doing interstate driving with the AC on. Neither my ‘15 Genny or Mrs. j’s ‘18 Legacy can come close to that mileage on the interstate.

    jmonroe
I am surprised the Gennny can't do it. Is that an 8 speed? My wagon has no problem maintaining ~30 mpg on the mostly 70 zone drive to Seattle, it just loafs along in 9th gear. Not bad for a 4300lb 362hp car.

I am... just.... no. We're talking a road trip here! He just needs to make sure he doesn't take any more with him than fits in the car, get in, and go. I have no idea what this "hotels and restaurants" thing is. He should be able to make that trip in 1.5 days (e.g., two driving days) and $250. Come on, Mr. College Student, harness your sense of adventure!

You wrote the post that I was thinking, but the last time I posited that a road trip made sense, plus saving money, I got a "wow, just wow."

You and I and a few others on here actually enjoy driving a vehicle somewhere, somewhere more than 50 miles from home. We're an endangered species.

I like road trips too, but when you have to deal with anything within 100 miles of LA and the traffic associated, that can zap the life out of you while driving. Getting to isolated highways is energizing though.

I forgot - I bought a 2021 Subaru Legacy for my grandson last night. I'll post a little more info. if he ever gets around to sending me a picture.

When he sells it have him take it to Vermont where Subarus are worshiped as the official state vehicle! Just be careful of the quirky Vermonters.

Yesterday we were returning on rt. 22a which is an empty country road with only occasional passing opportunities. We came up on a Tacoma with roofing company graphics doing exactly 3 mph under the speed limit. After about 10 miles we got an opportunity to pass and did so but Mr. roofer took exception and pitched a fit with multiple middle fingers and shouting.

If we had known this guy owned the road we would have asked permission to pass.🤬
A guy like that will deny permission. As @roadburner put it before, they are card carrying members of the Anti-Destination league. I truly believe they have a deep down desire for you to tailgate them so they make up an excuse to slow down further, and impede traffic more severely.

Shockingly no, that's the surprising part. I'll either look into the shop @jmonroe1's son uses in Greensburg or give Mr. Ballon a call. And I just read up on the cyber event. I had no idea it was that wide ranging and thought it was just a localized event.

Yes, the Genny is an 8 speed. IIRC, the absolute best mileage I got was a tick over 25 MPG on the PA turnpike and the car only had 3 passengers, 1 of them my skinny grandson. Maybe it’s the available 420 HP that kills the mileage but I never stomp on it since it jumps pretty good when pressed half way. It rides nice though.

Speaking of indie shops, I have got to land on one for the BMW or use one of the other area dealers. Went in for an oil change and coolant change on Wednesday. The steering wheel turned my hands black from grime as soon as I touched it, which the SA was appropriately livid about and got it cleaned up pretty quickly. Then I don't get a mile down the road before the coolant light comes on. It went off after a minute so I didn't think anything of it. Stopped for lunch and then on the way home it came on again and was on steady in 90 degree heat so I stopped off to get some coolant and watched the temp gauge like a hawk the whole ride home. This is the same dealer who won't take a waiter after 9AM, doesn't provide loaners to cars older than a decade, and whose systems were down on Wednesday so they photo copied a credit card, which I wasn't thrilled with at all, and will run it when they are back up.

EDIT: I checked the oil level when I got home as a precaution. At least they did that right.

    Inexcusable.

Oh you have the V8. For that hp, 25 mpg isn't terrible, especially if ground isn't level. On that note, my 2002 E55 AMG could easily cruise at 25 mpg (however it was more like 12 mpg in soul crushing metro Seattle traffic), but it had less hp - normally aspirated engine etc, and only 5 forward gears.

Agreed.... agreed..... and, agreed! I don't mind the digital display, but they way they made no effort to integrate it into the dash just kills it for me. I wish I could get that sort of economy on the drive to and from Alaska, but we're always heavily loading it or hauling a trailer. Or both. My gripe with the actual content of the displays is that BMW designed them to impress the wearers as opposed to designing them to provide useful information. Audi, Mercedes and even Jeep do a much better job.

    Here's the grandsons Legacy.

That's the picture he sent me. He seems to be enjoying it, but it's early. :)

The dealer experience was frustrating. This is the same dealer I have bought all of my Subarus from. It is getting to be even more "all about the money".

My normal sales guy sent me a text that showed price "adjustments" on all of their used cars. This Legacy was due to be raised $1,500, but they would hold the quoted price. If it was for me, I would have told them to shove it. The sales manager mentioned how my salesman saved me $1500 by letting me know. (They think you're stupid). I told him if they would have pretended it was going to be raised $5,000 they could have saved me even more money. He didn't think that was funny. :)

The sales manager text me before we went out to get it and asked how I was going to pay and if he had a license plate. I told him cash and no plate.

When I went to give him a check he said they can't do that. They can't take a check from one person who is paying for a car that will be in someone else's name. I asked him if he expected me to bring out a paper bag full of hundred-dollar bills since I said cash. He didn't think that was funny either. :) Moron. I mentioned that I have bought 9 or 10 Subarus and they know me. It didn't seem to matter.

I told him I could just put it on my credit card and get the cash back. That almost stroked him out. He babbled something about a 3% fee... I called my credit union and had them approve a large purchase on my debit card.

The wife's 2025 green Forester is there and it has to go through PDI. Now I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

I heard the same, I've only ran it once, the SoCal Audi Club only ran it once. The problem is turn 9. If you do something dumb on that turn it's very statistically likely you will damage your car, occasionally very severely. Comparatively, you almost have to damage your car on purpose at Buttonwillow or Spring Mountain in Pahrump NV to hurt it.

Every dealer I have ever done a cash deal with was willing to take a teller/cashier check as payment. As I recall my son’s Fusion was paid out of my account but registered to him.

They were probably just miffed that they couldn’t hose you on finance.

Any dealer that is still playing the market adjustment game is one I wouldn’t do business with. Are Subarus in such short supply that the can still pull that nonsense?

My BIL from Florida ran into a lot of games at a Nissan dealer who wouldn’t accept his down payment in check form.

I don't know what their problem was last night. They didn't say to bring a cashiers check. They had to do all the paperwork manually since their systems were involved with the hacking.

If my grandson didn't want the car right then I would have left.

I had to leave him there while they were washing it and filling it with gas to go to his sister's softball games. When I left, I took all the black cherry seltzer water and Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookies they had out. B)

When I bought the ATS from the same dealer I had gotten my two previous cars from with no issue re a personal cheque for the amount I was putting into it, they refused it. Said it needed to be a bank draft. They told me this sometime after 4PM on a Friday. I was extremely annoyed to say the least, but the sales guy drove me to the bank and I was able to obtain it. While grumbling during the ride back I said I should have just gotten a sack of cash instead. He said they couldn’t accept that either due to money laundering laws. Cripes!

Here in the US they could just fill out federal form 8300 but I bet no dealer would want the extra hassle.

Whatever happened to repeat customers are our best customers and our livelihood?

I think your dealer is in Holidaysburg. I was about to buy a new 2019 Legacy Limited from them but they didn’t want to give me sight unseen money that I wanted for the 2012 Legacy Limited that I was going to trade in. I told them if they could show me why it wasn’t worth what I wanted, I’d be willing to take less but I wasn’t driving there until they told me that they’d meet my price. While the lady salesperson wanted the sale badly, she couldn’t get the SM to up their offer. While they dragged their feet (this went on for a couple days with her calling me several times) Son #1 found a 2018 that was identical, right down to the Burgandy exterior with beige interior that I was insistent on getting. I guess they thought since they had exactly what I wanted (I made that perfectly clear so they’d be interested in making a sale), I’d drive a hundred and twenty miles, fall in love with it and then try to steal the trade.

It was a stroke of dumb luck that my Son found the identical car as a 2018 at a pretty reputable used car dealer about 5 miles from my house. Wouldn’t you know it, she called me right after I agreed to terms with the local used car dealer and made plans to get the car the next day. I told her never mind I just bought the identical car but it was a 2018 and that ended the conversation. I don’t think it was 15 minutes later when she called back and told me they’d better the price of my trade by a hundred bucks from what they didn’t want to give me in the first place. I told her too late, I didn’t want to deal with them and that ended my final conversation with her.

The best part of this is that I didn’t tell her that Carvana gave me almost $2000 more than what they or the used car dealer I bought from wanted to give me for the 2012 Legacy. I know that’s hard to believe and I didn’t believe it either until I had the check in my hand.

Naturally there was a story there too but I’m not going to tell it again now.

When I bought my current Explorer, I told them I was going to put down 15K.
They let me take it home and 'Just drop off the check next week'.
Of course, they did keep my trade in. I did write them a personal check.

recent cars that involved a lot of cash down have required a bank check. I expect (and am fine) with that piece. I wouldn't take a $30K personal check from me either!

Uplander has me thinking about channeling my inner old man, and springing for a Corvette. I think the wife actually liked a couple I pointed out. Need to swing by the dealer and do a test fit. I even have a brand new pair of white New Balance cross-trainers I can wear so they will know I am a serious buyer!

good thought. I don't want to buy any, but I have a pair of jeans I trashed putting in plank \flooring in the basement with a hole in the knee, so I can old school it and cut the legs off and then unthread some of the fringe! Just like I was 10 YO again. We just don't want to think about what year that was.
